I was taught in a Medical Writing course that in American English there is a distinction between "that" and "which," while in British English, "which" is used (almost?) exclusively. When I was teaching that concept to (American) undergrads, though, most of them had never heard of the distinction and continuously confused it. In case you aren't familiar, in American English, "which" is used with a comma and introduces a non-necessary clause, while a clause introduced by "that" is an integral part of the sentence and is not used with a comma. For example, consider the sentence: "The car that/which is green is mine." You would use "that" if you are using the color description to differentiate your car among others, making the clause necessary. You would use "which" (after a comma) if it is clear which car is yours without indicating its color, making the clause non-necessary. In Canada, "which" can be used with both restrictive (necessary) clauses and non-restrictive (non-necssary) clauses. I rarely come across the "that/which" problem in my students work, so I had to look this one up. I found the answer in part in a section dealing with restrictive clauses. To go with what Christy said but from another direction, a "restrictive clause" is a one that is necessary to the sentence or one which is necessary to the sentence :) When the relative pronoun "that" is used, the clause in almost invariably restrictive [I love that "almost invariably"]: The book that I so badly wanted to read was not in the library. Also, the relative pronoun "that" can often be omitted, in which case the caluse is definitely restrictive. The book I so badly wanted to read was not in the library. "That's" can only be "that is" so Jessi was right. That was Clark's primary thought. He could still see this woman's merciless glare as she'd walked out of a hotel suite, leaving a Kryptonite bullet in his chest, and the weapon in Lois' unconscious hand. He vaguely remembered hearing that she'd been found unfit to stand trial and placed in a mental institution, but that had been around the same time that Gretchen Kelly had brought back Lex Luthor, and Clark had been understandably preoccupied. He hadn't bothered to go back and check to see when they planned to release her. There was no possibility of getting past them without being seen. He considered the direct approach, an attack, and discarded it. While it might be expedient, he had the feeling that he didn't know the half of what was going on here. He couldn't leave Lois here, though. Finally, he settled on a distraction, hoping he could get to Lois that way. If he failed, he could always take them out directly and try to put the pieces together later. He looked around for several moments, the continuing discussion a distant blur to his intent mind. Finally, the focused his vision on a desk in the far back corner. Using a fine beam of his heat-vision, he set a neat pile of papers ablaze. The reaction from Carlin was all he could have hoped for. She turned her back on him, saw the flaming desk, and screamed for all she was worth. While she and her minion worked to put out the flames, slamming books down on the desk and scattering burning debris everywhere, Clark flew quickly through the room, not even leaving a blue streak in his wake. He came to a stop on the other side of the room, at a doorway that had been left open. Slipping inside, he took himself out of their range of vision once more, and continued the search for his wife. It wasn't difficult. Following the sound of her heartbeat, it's ever-increasing volume, he worked his way through two other rooms, both darkened. He saw more of the filing-cabinet walls along his way, and began to wonder just how large this operation was. He finally found Lois sprawled on the floor in a small room off the main hallway. His mind absently catalogued once again the fact that this underground facility was huge, but it wasn't a conscious thought. His mind was filled with the fact that he had found his wife, and that she looked awful. Duct tape secured her wrists and ankles, covered mouth. He wondered where her shoes were. She was lying on her side, too pale for his liking, and unconscious. It took him only a moment to remove the tape, using a combination of strength and desperation. He gently warmed the tape on her face with is vision, melting the adhesive slightly without burning her. He eased the sticky tape away from her mouth, then peeled it carefully from her wrists, then her ankles, trying not to remove her skin as well. He swept his x-ray vision along her spine, checking her neck and back for injury before he tugged her up into his arms. For just a moment, he held her near him, letting himself be content with the fact that she was alive and with him once again. Until that moment, he hadn't realized just how powerful his fear had been that he might have to live without her, raise their son without her. Lois regained consciousness slowly. Clark shushed her softly, listening carefully to check on the status of the villains a few rooms beyond. They were still arguing about the fire, who had started it and what had been damaged, so he knew that his distraction had been successful. "Are you okay?" he asked softly, his lips right by her ear. "Hurts," she mumbled in return. "What hurts? Your head?" "And my back," she answered. "My head is worse, though. He must have hit me." "That's what he said," Clark agreed, anger in his voice. Lois relaxed into her husband's arms, relieved. She knew that she should be getting up, escaping, something. At the moment, it just felt too good to be held. Clark must have needed it as well, because, Superman suit or not, he was holding her affectionately. "How are we getting out of here?" she finally asked. "Not sure," he answered truthfully. "If all else fails, there's the way I came in, but I don't think I want to fly that fast while your head is swimming. I haven't checked the back, yet. There may be another exit." He looked around before adding, almost absently, "This place is huge." "They're involved in the disappearances," Lois said firmly. "I could see it in his eyes. He got so nervous when I was talking to him." "Yeah, nervous enough to bang you over the head and tie you up," he admonished. "You should know better than to pull something like that when I'm not with you." "I've been taking care of myself for a lot longer than I've known you," she muttered. "And if you think I'm going to sit behind a desk just because I'm married, then..." "Shhhh," he said frantically. When she was silent, he listened for Carlin once more. She was still muttering about damaged documents, so he breathed a sigh of relief. "We'll discuss this at home," he told his wife. "If we haven't been able to settle it in five years, then I doubt we'll settle it here. It's not worth them finding us. I need to get you to a doctor." "Don't be ridiculous," she mumbled, but her heart wasn't in it. She was still nauseous, and her head was really hurting. She probably did have a mild concussion at least. It certainly wouldn't be the first time. "I need to get you out of here," he repeated again. "I want you to stay here while I check for a way out. There may be another opening, and I'd rather get you out and *then* get the police in here." "Don't be gone long," she requested. Reluctantly, Clark moved Lois back to the floor. His arms felt strangely cold as he stood and turned away from her, the certainty and security he had felt moments before were fading. "I love you," he said softly, turning towards the doorway. "I love you, too," she answered. Her head was already resting on the floor, cushioned by her hand. Clark left the room as silently as he had entered it. He walked away from the room he knew that Arianna was in, using his vision to check for an opening of some sort. The walls contained the same led reinforcement that the basement and floors of the orphanage had, so it was like looking through a maze. He wondered what the underground system of rooms and hallways had been originally designed for, and what purpose the lead had served. His mind wandering, he left his vision in full x-ray mode as he glanced across the file cabinets. He stopped cold. Inside the box, or whatever it was, was a small child. He x-rayed the other filing cabinets, and came to realize that each was a storage chamber of some sort. The children seemed to be sorted according to size. The children on the left side of the hallway were larger, maybe two or three years old, while the babies on his right were mere infants. Quickly, Clark counted more than forty children in this area alone. As his mind reflected on the many hallways which had similar chambers, he began to realize just how many children were involved. It was tempting to open one, to see the child inside and reassure him that his vision was indeed functioning correctly. It would have been easy enough to attribute the surreal scene to his imagination. The only thing that prevented his curiosity from taking hold was the fact that the small bodies were not emanating heartbeats. He could hear neither breathing nor heartbeats, and he had no desire to look upon a tiny corpse, if that was what this was. The place did have the distinctive feel of a mausoleum. If it weren't for the knowledge that at least one child had re-appeared, seemingly unhurt, from this situation, he might have gone completely crazy. The children had to be okay. He set that decision in his mind, and went back to searching for another exit. He found what he was looking for at the absolute back of the facility. There was a room that opened into stairs, and those stairs led to a doorway. He checked through the door to the other side, saw that it was indeed ground-level and accessible, and then went back to get Lois. She was laying right where he had left her. She raised up slightly when he came back into the room, but she didn't stand. Carefully, he lifted her into his arms and carried her down the hallway towards the exit. It might be alarmed, he reasoned, so he wanted her with him when he took out the door. As soon as he had her at the door, he was able to kick it open. As he had feared, there were loud alarms that went off around them just as soon as the door-jamb was breached. He didn't bother to heed them as he rushed Lois up and out of the basement, then on into the sky. He was several hundred feet above the building when he stopped to look down at Lois. She was unconscious in his arms. Without another thought, Clark sped towards the nearest hospital. *** "Mild concussion," the physician said blandly. "There's some swelling in her lower back, but that appears to be long-term, as there's no bruising. She was complaining of pain, so I'll order a MRI to be sure." "Will you need to admit her?" Clark hated to be away from Lois, but he needed to know that she was well cared for. "Absolutely," the physician responded. "Twenty-four hours is standard for observation following head trauma, especially while she's still nauseous. We won't release her until her condition is stable." "Thank you," he said simply. "Can I see her, now?" "Of course. She's in the second room to the left, right through that door. Go on back, and I'll be in after I make the arrangements for her admission." "Thank you," Clark said again, grabbing his sport coat from the waiting room chair, and turning towards the door that led back into the Emergency Room. He found Lois as the doctor had told him, strapped to a gurney with an IV in one arm. Her eyes were closed, but he had the feeling she was sleeping, rather than unconscious as she had been when he'd brought her in an hour before. The physician had been quick, checking her pupils and immediately sending her to CAT scan to determine how severe the concussion was. While she was being examined, she'd spent more time complaining about her back than her head. Clark thought she might have fallen when she'd been knocked out, but he had no way of knowing. The physician had examined that as well, and seemed to think it was less urgent than her neurological condition. He had waited the time that it took to find out that his wife was okay, but he knew that he had an obligation as well. He had set off alarms removing her from the underground facility, and they had to know that she was gone by now. He needed to get Chief Henderson in there to find out exactly what was going on. Every moment was precious. "Lois," he said softly. She opened her eyes, but didn't smile. "Hey," she murmured softly. "I need to get to the police station," he said simply. "Go," she told him. "You shouldn't have stayed this long. I'm okay, really." "I know," he said with a smile. "I love you." "You, too," she said, returning the smile. "Now, go." Lois was talking to the air. Clark was already moving out the door, and looking for a safe place to spin back into his costume. *** "Dammit," Clark said in frustration. Chief Henderson looked over his shoulder, having never before heard Superman utter a curse, whatever the provocation. "Sorry," he said belatedly. "I knew I would tip them off with the alarm, but I had to get the hostage out of here." He didn't bother to mention that the hostage was his wife. Superman had rescued Lois Lane from enough situations that the Chief hadn't been shocked when Superman had told him how he'd found the facility. "Understandable," the police Chief replied. He took a few more steps towards the desk, carefully moving a few documents with the end of a pen, so as not to touch them and smear any potential fingerprints. "How long ago was that?" "Ninety minutes," Clark admitted, albeit reluctantly. The Chief raised his eyebrows, but didn't comment. "Plenty of time to clear out," he finally murmured. "Looks like they took the computer, too." He gestured to the cords that remained, looking like snakes across the large desk. "I should have called," Clark muttered to himself. "I don't know what I was thinking." "You were protecting a hostage," the Chief reasoned. "That's always Law Enforcement's first priority." "The innocent are the first priority," Superman said firmly. "And there are plenty of innocents in this situation. The bodies are still here." "You're sure they're children?" he asked. "Yes. The skeletons are distinctive, although I can't hear a heartbeat from any of them." "Any idea how to get the drawer's open?" He shook his head. "I'm afraid to just tear them open. There are controls on the outside, and I don't know if they're locks or if they control something more. I'd like to bring in a specialist, if you don't mind." The police chief raised an eyebrow in silent query. "Dr. Klein, from S.T.A.R. Labs," he clarified. "He should be able to tell what kind of containment they're in, if any. This may just be a mausoleum of sorts, but I doubt that. Arianna Carlin was talking about money, and lots of it. You can't sell dead children." Clark had already told the him about what he had heard in the facility. It was the reason the Chief had come had come himself, rather than sending a simple uniformed officer. "Suspension of some sort?" the Chief asked. "I hope so," Clark said softly. "There are hundreds of children here." "My god," the Chief said quietly. "So Lane was right. She traced the abductions." "That's what we're counting on," Superman said firmly. "She had to have been close, or they wouldn't have bothered abducting her." "True enough. Get Klein over here, and have him see what he can do. In the meantime, I'll post a guard at the hospital, in case they come back for her. I'll put three men here, although I have no clue where I'll find them. I don't have the personnel for this kind of an operation." "If you need me to stay," Clark began, but the Chief cut him off. "No, I need you to get Klein over here. We have to find out what's going on with this place, and what to do about it. Either you've just solved one of the biggest mysteries of Metropolis, or I have a hell of a lot of parents to call with some very bad news." *** "It's amazing." Dr. Bernard Klein looked at the locking mechanism with something akin to wonder in his voice. "This is clearly a temperature control," he explained. "It's in Celsius, and reading absolute zero. That's probably why you couldn't identify it. Outside the scientific community, the metric system still isn't accepted." "So, they're alive?" Clark couldn't keep the hope out of his voice. "Most likely," the doctor told him. "Of course, the thaw will probably kill them. The heart and brain can't regenerate after extended periods in this temperature." "Then why would they..." His voice trailed off. Who knew what went on in the mind of psychotics. The mere fact that she had stolen hundreds of children was testament to the fact that she was mentally deranged. How far could it be from abducting to killing? Still, if she had indeed sentenced the babies to death, then now could she plan to turn a profit? And why would she preserve the corpses so perfectly. An imagine of little Sarah Lange came into his mind. Perfectly preserved, looking exactly as she had when she had been abducted. It was outrageous, but it would certainly explain the situation. It was a solution that gave him hope, and he desperately needed that at this moment. "Have you found any controls?" Clark asked. "Anything that could explain this?" "The police showed me the generators. Each of these chambers is battery charged. Look down here," he gestured to the base of the cabinets. "These are basic Lithium batteries, rechargeable, but they hold more power than you can imagine. Kind of like the batteries on a laptop, only more powerful. They have no memory, and they charge continually. The battery stays with the cell if it's removed from the wall." "She mentioned a moving van," Clark said bitterly. "They knew we were close." "Probably," Klein said absently, still looking at the mechanism. He moved the control slightly, changing the balance of the buttons on the front of the chamber. As he tried to adjust them back, there was a loud metallic "pop", and the drawer slid open to reveal a small boy of about two. "Oh my god!" Clark reached for the child through a haze of fog that formed as the body was exposed to room-temperature air. He moved closer, and looked at frosty cheeks and blue lips. "What do we do?" he asked frantically. "I don't know!" the doctor exclaimed. "I don't know how I opened it, so I certainly can't close it!" Clark had nothing more to guide him than instinct. He stepped closer to the boy, then focused his vision in a warm, continuous wave, as he had used when he had frozen Lois years before. It had worked twice before, although she had been cold for a much shorter time. He said a quick prayer that this would work as well. The child's skin lost it's frosty covering, but the skin was still bluish. As the boy warmed, Clark reached down and pressed on the tiny chest, right between his little nipples. Compressing the chest regularly, about twice a second, he continued his warming gaze. Gradually, the child's skin became pink, and he took a breath. Then another. Then another. Clark reduced the heat of his gaze, and removed his hand. The child was moving, now, albeit slowly. "That's amazing," Dr. Klein said softly, lifting the boy from his chamber. "I can't believe he recovered. Of course I'd have to do a complete physical, but I see no reason to think that any other child here would be in any worse condition." "We can save them?" Clark asked desperately. "You can," the doctor told him with a smile. "But I would recommend waiting until we have some help, here. I don't mind children, but this many might get a little out-of-hand." ========================================================================= Date: Sun, 8 Apr 2001 17:56:52 EDT Reply-To: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: Annette Ciotola Subject: Nfic Archive Updated - 4/08/01 Comments: To: lcnfanfic@egroups.com MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hey Gang, We've added some new PG fic by Nan Smith and new Music Video. Clark tugged each of the drawers open, administered chest compressions as he warmed the child, and time after time he saw life return where it had not existed before. A few of he children were more stubborn. Thankfully, Superman had heeded Dr. Klein's suggestion to contact the hospital and have an emergency team on hand. More than one child required defibrillation and oxygen, but every single one was brought back from their frozen suspension. Dr. Klein still couldn't explain it, but Superman was too grateful to question. If there was one disappointment in the procedure, it was that several columns of the chambers were missing. Judging from their size, Clark estimated that twenty children had been moved before he had returned with Chief Henderson. Twenty children were still missing, and it had been Clark's fault. If he had rushed Lois to the hospital, and then returned immediately with police support, then all of the children might have been saved. In addition, if Carlin had taken the time to return for the chambers, they might have taken her back into custody as well. That was a long-shot, as more likely she would have seen the police and not returned, but Clark couldn't ignore the possibility. He had put his concern for Lois over his responsibility to the city, and coming to grips with that decision would not happen in a day or two. They resuscitated children through the night, and well into the following day. Clark had to make three trips up into the sunlight to recharge himself. While his heat vision didn't drain his power at the same rate as flying, it still managed to do so over time. The trips up into the real world were surreal to Clark. Metropolis looked the same, untouched by the night's events. Garbage trucks were picking up, cars were driving by, and Clark was missing work. The world went on around them, despite the shift it had taken for him. He made one quick trip to a pay phone so that he could let his parents know what was going on. He reached his mother, who was at the townhouse taking care of CJ. His father was already at the hospital sitting with Lois, so she wouldn't be alone. Martha was excited about the children being found, and soothing when Clark expressed his guilt for not having done more. It didn't help Clark's feelings of guilt, but it was good to know that not everyone hated him for what had happened. Bringing the children back to life was only the first part of the battle. Each child had to be photographed, receive a physical exam by one of the many pediatricians at Metropolis General that were generously donating their time, and then go through the process of being identified so that they could be returned to their parents. The records were gone. Along with the missing chambers, Clark regretted the loss of the computer that had been sitting on the desk next to where he'd started the diversionary fire. Clark knew - just knew - that the children's identities had been housed there. As it was, the police were checking every missing child report, every photograph. It wasn't bad for the older children, who looked virtually identical to when they were taken, but for the infants it was more difficult. Despite what every doting mother said, most babies looked very much alike. Chief Henderson and his staff were relying on the fact that each child had his or her medical records pulled when they were abducted, and both the foot prints and basic descriptions could be used in addition to photographs. There were dental records on the older ones, as well. He wanted to take no chances with placing the wrong child with a family, and then having to upset the whole balance when the error was found. Clark understood the caution, appreciated it, but he was still tired by the time that the last child was placed. They had contacted as many parents as they were certain about, three-hundred-seven children, and another twelve had been placed in foster care pending further investigation. More than eighty children were still unaccounted for, but that was to be expected. There were chambers missing, and some of the abductions had suspected familial considerations, such as divorced parents with custody issues, or documented histories of child neglect and abuse. Clark was disappointed, of course, but in a city the size of Metropolis, there were many reasons a child could disappear, and eighty was a reasonable number for the three years in question. They were fortunate to find the children they had, and in a relatively uninjured state. They had all been very lucky, no thanks to Superman. *** It was nearly midnight when Clark made it home. He had only been able to spend a few minutes with his wife, due to the limited visiting hours on the floor. He'd managed to slip past the nurses and find his way to her room, but she'd been sleeping and he just didn't have the heart to wake her. She had looked as tired as he felt, and sleep would be the best thing for her. He had sat with her a minute, watching her eyes dart beneath her eyelids, and listening to the reassuring rhythm of her heartbeat. Then, he had headed home. The townhouse was quiet. He listened carefully for a moment, and found no sound except for three resting heartbeats. Even CJ was sleeping. With a soft sigh, he moved into the upstairs bathroom and stripped out of his suit. He had managed to recharge himself, but he was nearing the forty-two hour point without sleep. He had no clue what might be going on in Metropolis at the moment, and couldn't find it in him to care. He showered at regular-speed, too exhausted to bother with the super variety. The day had been both physically and emotionally draining, and he didn't have anything left. When Clark stepped from the bathroom, a towel around his waist more from habit than necessity, he was startled by his mother's presence. She stood there, a soft smile on her face, and a sleeping CJ in her arms. "Something wrong?" he asked softly, not wanting to wake his son. "I just wanted to be sure you were okay," she answered. "I'm fine, Mom," he responded. "You don't sound fine." "Well, I am." "How's Lois?" "Sleeping," he answered, a small sigh slipping from him. He really had wanted to talk to her, to listen to her voice. He needed her tonight. "I thought so," Martha said with a smile. "Here." She stepped forward and placed his sleeping son in his arms. Clark's arms automatically surrounded CJ, bringing the warm baby closer to his heart. With a confused expression, he sat down on the edge of the bed and smiled softly as the baby burrowed closer towards him, nuzzling the damp skin of his chest. "When you were little," Martha began, taking a seat next to him on the bed. "Money was just a little tight. For a few weeks, before the harvest came in, I waited tables at the diner in town. It wasn't that many hours, but it was the late shift. Some nights were hard, with truckers passing through or family arguments running their men out of the house. Those nights, when I got home, your father would be sound asleep. I'd really need to talk, but I didn't dare wake him up when he was working so many hours. He needed every moment of sleep he could get. "Anyway, on the really bad nights, I'd come into your room and pick you up. You never woke up, but you always seemed to understand that I just needed a few minutes with family. You'd snuggle into my arms, smell so sweet, like all babies do." She looked at her son and smiled. "Spend some time with your son," she advised. "There's nothing better for the spirit than a sleeping baby. He won't be this little for long." Clark nodded, his eyes suspiciously moist as he looked down at CJ. Martha stood, kissed her boy on his cheek, then did the same for her grandson. "Goodnight," she said softly. "Night, Mom," Clark told her as he scooted back on the bed and grabbed a blanket to tug over himself and his son. "Night, Sweetie." Clark laid on his back, let CJ snuggle on his chest, and wrapped his arms securely around his son. Within moments, despite the opposite side of the bed being too cold, despite the absence of Lois' familiar heartbeat, Clark slept. *** Clark carried CJ in one arm, and a dozen roses in the other. Red roses, symbolizing love. There was no other color he would have brought. While every color was appropriate, yellow for friendship, white for innocence, pink for ___, it was red that overshadowed the rest. She wasn't sleeping as he opened the door to her room, roses tucked beneath one arm to give him a hand to work with. She was glaring at the television, which was currently silent but displaying an obvious argument by two poorly dressed, overweight women on a talk-show. The caption at the bottom of the screen read, "You stole my man!", and Clark couldn't stop his grin. "Now I know why I work days," Lois grumbled, her face softening as she looked at the gifts Clark had brought her. "They're pretty bad," he acknowledged, gesturing to the television with his head. "It's either this or those stupid game shows," she explained. "How they find those idiots, I have no idea. They miss the easiest questions. I got so angry that I had to turn it off, but this is worse." Clark laid CJ down on Lois' bed so that she could hold him, then put the vase of roses on her bedside table. He had to move the tray of green Jello and beef broth to do so. "Yummy," he commented dryly. "Someone messed up my breakfast order," she explained. "I'll do without before I eat Jello for breakfast." "Don't blame you," he responded. "After we check with the doctor, I'll run over to McDonalds and get you an Egg McMuffin." "He was by, earlier." "What did he say?" Clark took the seat next to her bed after placing a gentle kiss on her forehead. "He's arranging for my discharge," she explained, tugging CJ onto her lap so that she could play with the wiggling baby. He was eager to see his mother, and was kicking and jabbering a mile a minute. No coherent words, Clark noted, but lots of sound. "Concussion okay?" "Better. I still have a headache, though." "You aren't going back to the Planet until that's gone," he told her firmly. "Yeah, yeah," she muttered, her voice resigned. "The doctor told me. He's also giving me a muscle relaxant for my back." The last words were spoken quietly. "How did the MRI go?" "My back's fine," she mumbled. "Or, it will be. The doctor says it's just a muscle strain." "From what?" Clark asked. "When you got hit?" Lois was silent for a moment. "No," she finally admitted. "It's been bothering me for a while." "Why didn't you say something?" "I don't like to complain," she admitted. "I thought it would go away." "Is it serious?" He moved to sit next to her on the bed, took her hand in his. She was silent again, and Clark was beginning to get worried by the time she spoke. "High heels," she grumbled. "What?" "I have a muscle strain from wearing high heels," she said with a grumble. "Carrying CJ makes it worse, because it throws my back out of alignment or something. The doctor wants me to buy some flat shoes and a stroller." Clark couldn't help the grin that spread across his face. "That's it?" Lois gave him a look that was pure threat, her arms encircling CJ even more tightly. The boy laughed at the game, turned sideways and began to snuggle. Lois couldn't keep the irritation on her face as her son patted her tummy and tried to crawl over her. "He's worth a change in your fashion sense," Clark told her softly. "I guess so," she sighed. "But flats make me look frumpy." "Better than chumpy," Clark said quickly. Lois had to laugh at that. "How are you?" she asked pointedly, changing the subject. "Did you finally get some sleep last night?" He shrugged one shoulder, but his expression wasn't convincing. "I caught some shut-eye with CJ. I'm still tired, but I'll live." "How many babies are home, today? These jerks won't let me have a copy of the Planet. Jimmy brought one by last night, but I was too tired to read it then, and they took it when they brought in my breakfast." "A few over three-hundred," Clark admitted. "Not bad for a day's work," Lois said smugly. Clark just shrugged again. Lois reached over, wrapped an arm around his back, and waited. "There were a lot of chambers gone," he said softly. "If I'd gone back sooner..." "If she hadn't taken them, they wouldn't have been in any danger in the first place. If you hadn't revived them, the babies would have died. If you hadn't gotten that tape off me, I would have suffocated when I started throwing up from the concussion. What ifs will make you crazy, Clark." "I know that," he responded. "I know that you are more important than anything, to me and to Superman. You're my first responsibility, even before the city." "So, why the guilt?" Lois asked, already knowing the answer. "Because Metropolis doesn't know that Superman is married with a family," he said in frustration. "Even if they did, I don't think they'd care. I guess I'm just tired of having to play God, decide who's saved, who's left, and who's not. It isn't just this time, Lois. I make these decisions every day, and they don't get any easier." "You do the best you can," she agreed. "You make good decisions, Clark. You have a good heart. You always do for others, and you always have. The city knows that. They aren't blaming you, are they?" "No," he admitted. "Just me." "Than stop," she said firmly. "You didn't cause any of this, the criminals do. Every time. All you do is the best you can, and it's a hell of a lot better than anything anyone else has to offer." "Thanks," he said softly, placing a gentle kiss at her temple. "I needed that." "No problem," she said with a grin. "You'll pay for it." "What?" "The backache," she clarified. "The doctor recommended heat and massage. You'll be spending a lot of time on my lower back. I'll consider it repayment for the kind words." Clark grinned. "I love your back," he said, reaching down to kiss her gently. Lois returned the kiss, then sighed. "Mmmm, I love you," she murmured. "I love you, too." "So, did Lois and Clark get an exclusive on the story?" she asked, returning his mind to business. "Yeah," he told her. "I called in your story last night, then Superman gave Clark an exclusive interview with the details. I didn't mention the missing chambers, though," he said softly. "I didn't want any parents to be disappointed." "That's probably smart," Lois agreed. "Chief Henderson thought so, too." Lois nodded. "How'd Perry like the story? All Jimmy would say is that he's ticked about me getting conked on the head." "He was okay with it," Clark said thoughtfully. "I was kind of surprised that he wasn't more excited. I mean, it breaks a huge case, and it justifies all the work you've put into it up until now." "Yeah, it does." She shifted restlessly, and Clark moved CJ back to his own lap, allowing her a moment to rest. "Clark? Do they have any leads on Arianna Carlin?" He bounced CJ on his lap, got the boy giggling loudly, then answered. "No, they don't. No fingerprints, no leads, and no way to track her. If I hadn't seen her, heard her talking about Doctor Heller, then we never would have known who was behind it." "She left a fortune behind in technology," Lois reasoned. "She might be back for it." "We're hoping," he agreed. "But I don't plan on holding my breath. Superman searched for her for over two hours, so she's either way outside the city, or she's in one of the leaded-out areas, out by the docks. You know those tunnels, Lois. I could walk them for days and still not get to all of it. But, there's no way to check it from above-ground." "I don't think she'd stay that close, anyway," Lois reasoned. "That was her one mistake. She let the babies be adopted here, in Metropolis. That's how we knew something was up, and how we traced the orphanage. She's probably left the state by now." Clark thought a moment, then shook his head. "No," he argued. "The only thing she liked better than money, which she's already loaded in if she was able to finance this, was tearing Metropolis apart. She tried it before with the anti-Superman campaigns, and she tried it now from the lowest level possible: destroying families at their base." "You think she's still got it in for Metropolis?" "Yeah," he told her. "I do." "Better the city than us," she finally concluded. "I suppose," he reluctantly agreed. "But I hate to see anyone taking out their aggression on the innocent." Lois reached over and laid a hand on CJ's head. "I agree," she said softly. She didn't need to say any more. It was in her eyes, and Clark read them all too clearly. "He's ours," Clark told her firmly. "I can't tell you how I know it, but I do. He's ours. A part of you and a part of me. I can see it in his eyes, and in his temper. He's the best part of both of us, and I'd believe that even if Dr. Klein hadn't found my DNA in him." Lois nodded, her eyes moist, but she didn't cry. She'd cried enough in the past over this, and she was finished. Clark was right. CJ was theirs, by love if not by birth. How it all fit together, she had no idea, but they had been raising the boy for the better part of eight months, and he'd only been a few weeks old when they got him. Possession was nine tenths of the law, and they weren't giving that up. Clark watched the battle on his wife's face, reached out and took her hand, then just held it for a while as their son played between them. "I'll pick up a stroller, tonight," he offered. "What kind do you want? One of those that folds real little, or a bigger one?" "He's almost a year old," she reasoned. "Better get the big one. With my luck I'll wrench my back opening the darned thing." Clark laughed, then stood. "I need to get back to work. Mom's down in the lobby. She wanted us to have a little time together." "Smart woman," Lois remarked. "Yeah, she is," he agreed with a smile. "I'll pass CJ to her, then go finish up some stuff at the Planet. What time are they springing you?" "By noon," she told him. "Otherwise the HMO will have a fit." "I'll be back by eleven, then." "I can't wait to sleep in my own bed," she admitted. "I can't wait to have you there," he told her, his eyebrows waggling in his best impression of a leer. "Get out," she laughed. "Go to work. I love you." "I love you, too," he grinned. Then he left the room, CJ held carefully in one powerful arm. Lois laid in the bed for a long time, just thinking about her men. She was going to have to stop this, she decided. Her work wasn't her life anymore. She had to take better care of herself if she planned to raise CJ, if she wanted to enjoy any time at all with her husband. She didn't have to be boring, she decided, but there was a place in every life for practicality, and she'd been stepping over that line for nearly eight months. Mothers had a responsibility to their children, and she wasn't upholding hers. She needed to... Lois' head jerked up as her door opened and a newspaper was thrown to her bed, landing lightly at her feet. She didn't have to look up to see who had thrown her a copy of this morning's Daily Planet. "Go to work!" she called out again, and smiled when she heard her husband's masculine laughter. She flipped the paper open, glanced at the headline: "THREE HUNDRED BABIES RETURNED SAFELY TO THEIR HOMES, by Clark Kent and Lois Lane." She smiled, glancing at the accompanying stories on the front page. Gradually, the smile faded as she looked at the by-line. Lois Lane. She'd kept her name when they married, mostly for professional reasons. Maybe she shouldn't have, she considered. Maybe Lois Kent would be a more careful reporter than Lois Lane. Maybe it was something that she should think about. Maybe she'd been wrong. With a final sigh, she rolled over on her side and rested her eyes. She had almost three hours until they would get her out of here, and it was as good a time as any to rest. After all, she would spend tonight in her own bed, and she had every intention of being up to the occasion. *** Arianna Carlin looked over her right shoulder at the columns of chambers lining the moving van. They hadn't had time to take more before the police had stormed their facility. Only twenty-two babies, the youngest infants, the smallest chambers. It wasn't much, but it was all she had. Returning her eyes to the road, she changed lanes just as she saw the turnoff for Interstate Sixty-four. The freeway ran coast-to-coast, with any number of cities in between. Any number of places that she could start anew. She had only twenty-two children, but she could steal more. She'd find a city that didn't have Superman protecting it. First he had killed Lex, then he had imprisoned her. It was too much. He destroyed her successes. She would find a place far from him, far from his influence. She would rebuild her facility, rebuild her fortune. She'd started over before, and she could do it again. She knew she could. She just had to get away from Superman... THE END!! Hey - I've been out of town! As for First Night - I started it when I was a total newbie instead of just a kinda newbie. I am now making it 7 chapters of the same story and may change the title - but I don't know. There will be a sequel and it will probably be a little while (hopefully not too long) because of RL and other stuff and in part because I need a break (course now Disappearing Clark has taken over my muse). Thank you. I know it affects us, but I never thought you would want to talk about it. For that, I underestimated you, and I’m sorry. But I won’t do that again.” Clark grabbed his wife by the waist, and lifted her up, slowly let her down, sliding along his chest, until her lips were in front of him. Then he kissed her hard. “Oh, Clark.” Clark carried his wife upstairs, where they participated in more newlywed games. ---------------- And now for part 8... On a cold November morning, just after Thanksgiving, Lana found herself at the doctor’s office. She had been in before, about a week ago, to get some medication prescribed for a cold that didn’t want to go away, but after taking the antibiotics, she was feeling pretty good. Well, except for this tiredness she couldn’t seem to get rid of. “Good morning, Lana. How are you doing today?” “Oh, just fine Dr. McDonald. I’m a little concerned why you had me come back here. I hope it’s nothing bad.” “No dear. Nothing bad. At least not from a health standpoint, anyway. Sometimes, newlyweds regret the loss of their freedom so soon after their marriage, but you and Clark both seem fairly adaptable.” “What?” “Sorry, I tend to be somewhat long-winded sometimes. Basically, we ran your blood work after we gave you the antibiotics last week, and we found some interesting results.” “Interesting in what way?” “Lana, my dear. You and Clark are going to be parents.” Doctor McDonald studied Lana’s face, as he studied the faces of every woman he told of their upcoming pregnancy. He loved to see the look as recognition of impending motherhood sank in. The majority of the time it was an incredible gift to be able to tell the young women who came to see him. There were a few cases where the up-and-coming mother did not find the news as heart warming as the doctor would have hoped. But he found that to be the case much less often now that he moved to Smallville. Lana’s face was a mask of shock. Pregnant. She was pregnant. This wasn’t in the plans. This was unexpected. This wasn’t supposed to happen so soon. She was pregnant. She was pregnant with Clark’s child. This caused her to pause for a second. Clark, who all he ever wanted since he found he was different, was to belong, would now be a father. And she knew he would be an incredible father. And she knew just how much being a father would mean to him. A smile slowly crept across her face as she recognized just what this baby would bring to Clark. A true sense of belonging. Not just with her, not just with his parents, but also with his son or daughter. She realized that she was able to give Clark something that he had never been able to find. It touched her heart to be able to give him this gift. Her face was beaming as she looked at the doctor. “You can’t say anything to Clark about this,” Lana said to Doctor McDonald. “Why not?” “You don’t understand, Clark has wanted this for so long. I want to wait and share it with him for Christmas. I want this to be the best Christmas present Clark ever receives.” Doctor McDonald chuckled as he listened to a very excited Lana Kent tell him how to contact her regarding anything to do with the pregnancy until Christmas. ----------------- The last few weeks before Christmas seemed to fly by for Lana. She knew what her ‘condition’ would mean to Clark, and it seemed like everyday it was getting tougher for her to wait to tell him. But she knew it would be an incredible surprise to Clark on Christmas morning. She finally made her way into Smallville, to finish up her Christmas shopping, and to find that perfect card that Clark could open up on Christmas morning, that would just tell him what he was about to become. She spent almost a half hour looking at different cards, before her eyes noticed one that was kind of hidden behind some other cards. She read it and realized it would make the absolute perfect card to tell Clark with. She noticed that it also seemed to be the last card of its kind. She smiled to herself as she thought how lucky she was. She went to pay for her various items, and the clerk at the counter raised an eyebrow as she rang up the card. When she looked at Lana, Lana simply brought her forefinger to her lips in a shushing gesture, and winked. The clerk had a huge smile on her face. “Going to be an interesting Christmas at the new Kent household this year, huh?” Lana just laughed. “Yes, I think Clark is in for the surprise of his life this year.” “Well, God bless you both, or should I say the three of you!” Lana just chuckled and left with her purchases. --------------------- To be continued... ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 9 Apr 2001 23:37:51 -0400 Reply-To: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: The Kraz Man Subject: Brand New Start 1 - Shattered Dreams (9/13) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit >From part 8... “Going to be an interesting Christmas at the new Kent household this year, huh?” Lana just laughed. “Yes, I think Clark is in for the surprise of his life this year.” “Well, God bless you both, or should I say the three of you!” Lana just chuckled and left with her purchases. --------------------- And now part 9... Christmas Eve finally arrived, and Lana and Clark were at the Christmas Festival in Smallville with Clark’s parents. Lana’s parents were supposed to be there as well, but their plane was delayed until Christmas morning. The Kent’s were enjoying themselves, dancing, and having fun. It was a very enjoyable Christmas party. But eventually it was time to leave, and Lana and Clark made their rounds and said their goodbyes, and wished everyone a very merry Christmas. As they were leaving Smallville, it started snowing, adding to what had already been several days worth of snow on the ground. While they were driving home, they were listening to various Christmas Carols as they played on the radio station. When they neared their home, they heard an NRB announcement on the radio. There was a Canadian village in dire straits, and officials were trying to get locate Superman. When they pulled into the driveway, Clark looked to his wife. “Lana…” “Clark, sweetie. Go. Just be careful.” “God, I love you.” “Just go.” She kissed him hard. “And hurry home.” With that, Clark took off, changing into Superman in mid-air on his way to Canada. Lana headed inside to warm up from the winter chill she had. When she got inside, she noticed that there was a message on their answering machine. She played back the message. “Lana, darling. It’s mother. I was able to get a charter flight to bring me to Wichita. I should be arriving fairly late, or early depending on how you look at it, around 1 am. Do you think you could have that husband of yours pick me up? I’d really appreciate it. Hugs and Kisses. Ciao.” ‘Couldn’t wait and come with daddy, could you mom.’ Lana thought to herself. After saving the message, she left a quick note for Clark, and then hopped in the car, and headed to State Route 54, and Wichita. As she was pulling out of the driveway, the phone in the house began to ring. After the fourth ring, the answering machine picked it up. ‘Hi, you’ve reached the home of the Kent’s. This is Clark…’ ‘And this is Lana, and we aren’t home right now. But please leave a message, and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible. Please wait for the beep. Thanks.’ “Lana, darling. It’s mother again. Apparently the barbarian from whom I charted the plane won’t bring me to Wichita due to the weather. A little bit of snow makes him scared. Anyway, we’ve landed in Kansas City. I’ll get a hotel room tonight, and he says he’ll bring me the rest of the way in the morning. So don’t bother picking me up in Wichita. Bye darling. Hugs and Kisses. Ciao.” -------------------- Lana continued her trek, as the weather got worse. Realizing that there was no way that she was going to make it to the airport, she found a good stopping point to turn around and head back home. She wasn’t that far from home after all, and she knew that she could easily make it back. As she headed back, Lana was startled by a bright gold light and then noticed a deer standing in the middle of the road in front of her. Panicked, she swerved the car to miss the deer, and the car seemed to take a life of it’s own. Skidding across the ice formed on the shoulder of the road, the car picked up speed, and shot off the side of the road. After smashing through a road sign, the car reached a shuttered stop as it crashed into a tree near the road. Once again, silence reigned in the air. A figure in a dark cloak rose from his resting place on the other side of the median, and walked to the frozen deer. “Oh please. I can’t believe she missed the deer. How entirely droll. Hmmph. Maybe the wreck will be more exciting.” As the figure passed the deer, he reached out and removed a small device clinging to the animal’s shoulder. As soon as the device was removed, the deer looked up at him, and then took off. “Oh sure, run now Bambi. That’s another stupid tale I had to endure in that awful place. How dreadfully quaint.” The figure finished crossing the road, and surveyed the damage caused by the wreck. Now this held promise. This could be fun. He headed to the damaged car, looking in. Lana was bleeding from a nasty cut on her forehead, and appeared to be unconscious. She moaned slightly. “Now, now. Can’t have you coming back now, can we. That would just ruin all the fun of the whole plan. The blue buffoon’s is just causing way to much havoc with the future. I mean, it’s just so boring with everyone idolizing him and you. Can’t have that.” With that, he held a small metal device to her neck, and a small ‘sfft’ sound was heard in the silence of the night. “Well, that takes care of you and the super brat. Let’s see what we can do about hubby now.” With that, he took a hunk of glowing red rock out of his pocket and proceeded to hide it under the seat. “Won’t Clarkie be surprised when he finds you here shortly. But, I can’t stick around. Must be off. Ta ta for now.” With that, another gold flash of light was seen, and the figure seemed to step through it. -------------------- To Be Continued... ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 9 Apr 2001 22:50:16 -0500 Reply-To: truitt22@flash.net Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: timothy truitt Organization: tnt technical services Subject: Re: OT: FoLC Birthday! I was thinking he was wearing something like that, too, so I did a little checking. I have that particular picture up on my website, so I went to my directory and pulled up the picture and enlarged it so I could get a good, detailed look at it. It's a white button-front collared shirt with both broad and thin blue vertical stripes, and amongst all those stripes are leaf patterns. It does indeed look very much like a Hawaiian print shirt, though a much dressier version. At least it wasn't one of those tacky ones. He needed to call his Mom and see if she'd come visit for a few days. They really needed a new place and soon. Maybe, if the weekend was nice, and Perry let him off work, they could go look for a house. His reverie was interrupted. "Hey, CK. How's Lois doing? We were all so scared when Lucy called and told us the big news." "She's fine, Jimmy. The baby's fine and everything's just... fine!" Clark smiled up at the younger man. "What I'm more interested in is you and my sister-in-law. She's my sister now and that makes me her big brother and so you have to deal with me!" Clark tried to look stern. Jimmy laughed. "Nice try, CK, but you couldn't look mean if you wanted to! Now, Superman, on the other hand - he seems like a nice guy, but I really wouldn't want to get on HIS bad side!" Jimmy didn't notice Clark trying to hide a smirk as he sat on the edge of the older man's desk. "You don't have anything to worry about from me. I'll treat her right." "You better!" "Clark, I think I'm falling in love with her. She's amazing! She is the most wonderful person in the world and I think that I want to spend the rest of my life with her. That's a big thing for me. I mean, I know we don't know each other real well, and so you wouldn't know this, but that's something that I've never thought with any other girl I ever dated. I don't want to know what I can get out of this relationship, but what she wants and what she needs." "That's great, Jimmy. I'm happy for you guys, really I am. And Lois is, too. But watch out. She'll come after you if she even thinks you might be hurting her sister." "Hey, who do you think named her 'Mad Dog Lane'? But don't tell her that!" "JIMMY!" "Gotta go. Chief needs something." Jimmy rolled his eyes. "COMING, CHIEF!" Clark looked around the newsroom. Someone stood at the railing overlooking the pit. Someone Clark never wanted to see again. Lex Luthor surveyed the area with some disdain. He never understood why someone would WANT to work for a living, but he knew these little minions were necessary to perpetuate his empire. He walked directly towards the office of the Editor-in-Chief. No second rate information for him. He looked annoyed when his way was blocked by a younger, more muscular man. "Can I help you, Mr. Luthor?" Clark Kent stared him straight in the eyes. "I don't think so, Mr.... I'm sorry, I don't remember your name." Luthor's eyes showed anything but an apology. "If you have something to talk to Perry about, I suggest you clear it through me first." "Well, I doubt you'll be any help." Lex looked around. "Where is the lovely Ms. Lane? I'd prefer to speak with her." "Ms. Lane is home, ill." "Oh. Well, perhaps I'll call on her there. She did want an interview after all." Clark took a step towards the older man. "I don't think so. She told me all about your little dinner." "What does it matter to you?" "I'm her husband and so anything that happens to her, affects me and when someone tries to hit on my wife, it bothers me a little bit." "If you were so secure in your marriage..." Luthor was mildly annoyed to find out that this... this... thing was married to the lovely Lois Lane. He smiled to himself. He shouldn't be too hard to take care of. "I am secure in the love of my wife for me. And I know that you are up to something and I'm not going to let you get away with it." Luthor looked down his nose at the taller man. "I don't know what you're talking about. If you'll excuse me." Luthor turned on one heel and marched out of the newsroom, his eyes barely containing his hatred for the reporter. Clark walked to the window. He saw Lex enter a limousine that headed away from Luthor Towers and towards the apartment he now shared with his wife. Clark headed towards the stairwell. He had to get home before Luthor showed up. He heard Jimmy calling after him, but ignored the call. Seconds later, he was airborne in bright red and blue. Clark landed on the roof of the apartment building and changed back into his street clothes. He waited until Luthor entered the building and then went downstairs, staying out of sight and keeping an eye on all that happened. Lucy opened the door and didn't appear to want to let the imposing, wealthy man in. Lois appeared behind her in the doorway. Clark could see interest and apprehension fighting for control in her eyes. She must have agreed that Luthor could come in, because Lucy opened the door a little wider and Luthor entered. Clark waited a few minutes, unsure of what to do, mainly because of the, well, sentry was the word that came to mind, outside the door. He shook is head. He was Superman for crying out loud. If he really wanted to, nothing could stop him. Clark took a deep breath and decided maybe he better pay his visit as Superman. He went back up to the roof and was hovering outside their living room window in seconds. He pushed the window open and stepped inside. Luthor shot him a look of death. Lois sat in the chair while Lucy was on the couch, as close to her sister and as far from Luthor as she could get. "Mrs. Kent?" Lois looked up startled, and somewhat annoyed by the title. "Superman." She stood and walked towards him. "What are you doing here?" Superman answered her, but his gaze was directed at the tycoon. "Clark told me that Luthor stopped by the newsroom looking for you. Clark told him you weren't to be bothered and asked me to make sure that everything was okay. Mr. Luthor, Mr. Kent told you not to come here. I suggest you leave." "Mr. ah, what's your moniker again? No matter. I am here at Ms. Lane's invitation and when she asks me to go I will." Lois turned and looked at him. "Lex, you better go. If you want an interview, my partner and I would be glad to meet with you for lunch or dinner some evening." "We shall see, Ms. Lane. We shall see." Luthor stood to leave. "Don't think this is over, Superboy. The world isn't big enough for both of us." He left the apartment, knowing that there would be two people he needed to get rid of so he could be with the woman of his dreams - Lois' wimpy husband and that annoying not-so-super-hero. Lucy was unable to move during the entire exchange. She was in the same room as the world's only superhero, and he was protecting her sister. "Superman..." "Lois, Clark will be here in a few minutes. You know you don't need to be upset and there is something no good about that man. I'm sorry for referring to you as 'Mrs. Kent', but it seemed that Mr. Luthor needed reminding of your married status." "I know. It's okay." Lois heard Lucy clearing her throat. "Superman, this is my little sister, Lucy Lane." Superman smiled at the young lady who was having difficulty finding her voice. "It's nice to meet you, Ms. Lane." He took her hand and bent low to kiss it. "Ladies, I must go." He tilted his head to the side. "I think that's Clark coming down the hall now. Lois. Lucy. Have a good day." With that he was gone out the window. Lucy sank into the couch. "WOW! He really is as good-looking as he seems on T. V." Lois smiled and sat back down in the chair. "He is, isn't he? But Clark's better looking!" "You're blinded by love." "Yes, I am. And that's okay with me." "Well, I guess, Jimmy's close. He does have amazing eyes. But Superman's are the color of chocolate." "So are Clark's," Lois added dreamily, staring at the ceiling, wondering when he'd be back. She heard the door open. "Clark?" "Hey, honey." Clark crossed the room to sit on the armrest next to his wife. "Did Luthor show up here?" Lucy answered. "So did Superman." Clark looked at Lois, his eyes full of concern. "Are you okay?" "I'm fine, Clark. I don't know why Superman needed to show up. All Lex wanted to do was talk." "Lois, the doctor said no stress and that man is no good." "Clark, let it go." "I won't. Lucy, could you excuse us for a minute?" Lucy nodded and headed for the kitchen. "Look, Lois, he came down to the Planet. I can't explain it, but the look in his eyes... He's up to no good. I don't trust him." "Clark, you're being silly. And I can take care of myself." "Lois, I worry about you and the baby. Did you tell him you're pregnant?" "No. Why?" "I just don't want him to know. I have a horrible feeling about this and I don't want him anywhere near the two of you." "I know you think that, Clark, but why can't you accept that maybe he's just a nice guy with no ulterior motive?" "I just don't think he is. There's something evil about him. There just is." "Look, Clark. Can't we just agree to disagree on this?" Clark sighed. "I guess, but Lois, I don't want you near him unless I'm around." Lois rolled her eyes at him. "I guess, Clark." She moved so that she was looking him straight in the eye. "I can think of something else I'd rather do than disagree with you anyway." Clark smiled. "What's that?" "This." Lois kissed him softly on the lips. ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 10 Apr 2001 19:52:13 -0500 Reply-To: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: Carol L Moncado Subject: First Night VII: Complications, 3/? MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Two days later, Lucy was sitting on the couch in the living room waiting for Lois to wake up. Perry had given Clark two days off to spend with his wife, but he was going to have to work at least part of the weekend. Lois and Clark had asked Lucy to stay at their apartment while Clark was working. Lucy heard movement in the other room. "Lois?" she called softly. "Are you up?" "Kind of," came the sleepy reply. Lucy walked into the room and sat on the edge of the bed. "I'm glad to see you!" She gave her sister a hug. "Since when are you a baseball fan?" Lois looked down. She was wearing another one of Clark's shirts - they were so much more comfortable than hers - and this one was another Cardinals baseball shirt. "It's Clark's. He wants me to go to some baseball games in St. Louis with him and his dad this summer." She rolled her eyes to show what she thought of the idea. "What are his parents like?" "They're wonderful. His Mom is like the moms that we read about in books in elementary. She makes the best home-cooked meals and can sew and do just about any other kind of domestic thing you can dream of. But that's not all. She's talented, too. She is an artist, kind of. She thinks her stuff is great, but it's really only okay. She comes up with the weirdest names for her stuff, too. I don't even remember them, but they never have anything to do with what the artwork actually is. She is wonderful to talk to. I can tell her anything, and believe me, there's a lot to talk about when you marry someone like Clark and really don't have anyone else." It was out before she realized what she was saying. "I mean, no one else knew I was married, so who else was there to talk to? Superman was nice enough to fly us out there last weekend so I could meet them. She's incredibly smart, and could do just about anything on the farm, but could be a CPA if she wanted to, or anything else she put her mind to." "Well, listen. I'm under strict orders to make sure that you eat healthy while I'm here, so I'm going to make you breakfast and you're going to tell me how you met Clark, this time, and all about the wedding and everything. Okay?" "Fine. Just make lots of it. I'm eating for two now." Lois smiled and Lucy laughed as she walked to the kitchen. Several minutes later, the sisters sat down to breakfast. "So, spill it Lois. Tell me everything!" "I'm NOT telling you everything!" "Fine, tell me almost everything then!" "Okay, okay! Well, I never told you all about meeting CJ in DC, did I?" "No, you just told me one day that you had met an amazing guy named CJ and that if you couldn't have him, you weren't ever going to get involved with another guy ever again." Lois groaned. "That was right after Claude wasn't it?" "Yes. Does Clark know about Claude?" "I told him all about it. I had just finished that big story about two and half weeks, three weeks ago and Perry was interviewing some guy. You know me, I just barged in trying to get him to let me run with another story I was working on. He tried to introduce me to Clark, but I didn't pay any attention to him. I did a little bit of a double take, but that's it. Anyway, he didn't hire Clark, but somehow Clark convinced him the next day. I could have screamed at Perry when he gave me Clark to work with on my story. In fact, I did." Lois smiled at the memory. "Anyway, we spent part of the day working together and then I asked him to go to Luthor's Ball with me. I didn't really want to, but I thought I needed an escort." Lois' eyes clouded over and she had a dreamy look on her face. "He looks absolutely amazing in a tux. He's incredibly handsome, you know." Lucy laughed, breaking Lois out of her reverie. "I noticed. Wait, you told me that Clark got married after the ball, didn't you?" "Yes. We were leaving after the ball was over and this guy walks up to us. He said there was somewhere that we needed to be. We followed him and we ended up at this church. Clark went one way and I went the other. I walked into this little room and there was this lady there. She was wearing this gorgeous blue dress and I heard her yell to someone that we had a bride and a maid of honor and could we please get started. So she pushes me into the, oh, I don't know what to call it - the main area with all the pews and sticks some flowers in my hand. She tells me to follow her so I do. Next thing I know, I'm holding Clark's hand, putting a ring on it and saying I do to something. I thought I was the maid of honor and I couldn't figure out why I had to say 'I do', but I just followed instructions. Suddenly, this lady is pushing me from behind, and I'm kissing Clark! I couldn't believe it! At first, I thought it was some huge prank he was pulling or something - he HAD kissed me in the elevator - " "WHAT?!" "Oh, right. Earlier on Friday, he stopped the elevator and kissed me. Lucy, I had been kissed by other guys, but even CJ hadn't taken my breath away like Clark did in the elevator. It scared me and I didn't want to admit that it had affected me. I just knew that it wasn't CJ. And the dance at the ball was incredible, but it never crossed my mind that he could really be CJ. I mean the thought occurred to me, but I didn't believe that I could really have found him, finally... "Lois, you're babbling again." "Sorry. Anyway, so I'm kissing Clark and the preacher guy says congratulations to 'Mr. and Mrs. Kent'. I looked at Clark while I was kissing him - it wasn't really a kiss kiss, just a lips touching each other kiss - I saw the confusion and fear in his eyes. I just knew he didn't have anything to do with it. We were almost out of the building before I realized there wasn't anyone else around. Just me, Clark, the best man, the maid of honor and the preacher. Once we got outside, I started yelling at him, told him that I wouldn't marry anybody but CJ and certainly not some hack from Nowheresville. He just stood there, hands in his pockets staring at the ground, looking totally dejected. He spoke really soft and said that I was wrong. It wasn't hack from Nowheresville, it was hick. Daddy had called him a hick, not a hack. Finally, I realized that he was CJ and I went to kiss him, but he wouldn't kiss me, not until we had talked some. It started raining and we went to the closest dry place we could find. It was the Metropolis Hilton. I thought about and just knew that I wanted to stay married to Clark. I told him that. We got a room and stayed the night." Lois shrugged. "That's all there is to it." "What about after that? I mean, you weren't home a lot that weekend or the next week." "We worked all day the next day and when we went to meet a source, he was dead. We spent most of the night waiting for the police and then talking with them. Clark got us a decent hotel room for the night and that's all there was to it. The next night was my 'interview' with Luthor. Clark was really upset with me. And I understand why. Luthor wanted to date me, not give me an interview. I'm surprised I haven't heard from him since then. Anyway, the day after that, we ended up tied up in a warehouse by two freaks. We got out somehow - I think it may have been Superman before his real debut, but I don't really know. It's the only thing that either one of us have come up with. You can't say anything, though." Lucy nodded. "Perry gave us the next couple of days off and we spent them together, at Clark's place. We decided to tell everyone that I was married, but not to who. Okay, I decided. Clark wanted to tell everyone right away. But you know me. I can't deal with failure of any kind so I didn't want anyone to know until I was sure it would work. Clark made Jimmy promise to not tell you because I wanted to be the one to do it. Don't be mad at him. We told him Monday that I was married to Clark and that we were having a baby. I made him promise not to tell you because we were going to tell you that night. Anyway, Superman made his big debut and he flew us to this little tropical island for the weekend. The next weekend he flew us to Smallville to see Clark's parents. "I talked to Martha on Friday night, about life in general. It was her idea that I might be pregnant. I took a test on Sunday, and sure enough I am. You know the rest of the story, more or less." The two Lane sisters had moved into the living room by this time, Lucy amazed at how much Lois could eat while talking so much. There was a knock at the door. Lois called out, "Who is it?" "Your father." "Go away, Daddy. You're not allowed to visit until at least next week." "Let me in, Lois. Lucy, I know you're there." Lucy rolled her eyes at her sister. "I promised Clark, Daddy. Now, if there's something you want to say, call us and I'll be happy to relay a message, but you are not to visit. You know that." "You are my daughters and you'll do as I say!" "Daddy, don't make me call Clark. I promised and I will call him." Lucy turned to Lois and waved her into her room. She stood and walked to the door. When she reached it, she leaned on it, a heavy sigh escaping her. "Daddy, I will call him. Now, please, don't make this any more difficult than it already is. You remember what the doctor told us." "I don't care what any doctor said. I am a doctor, too you know, and I demand to see my daughter." Lucy stood by the door. "I'm dialing, Daddy." "No you're not." "Fine." Lucy walked to the phone. "I really am now, Daddy." Clark answered on the other end. "Clark? Hi, I'm sorry to bother you, but Daddy showed up and won't leave. No, I didn't let him in... "Fine! I'm leaving! But I won't forget this, young lady!" Lucy heard footsteps heading away from the door. "Okay, Clark, I think he's gone." Clark sighed on the other end of the phone line. "I'm sorry you have to go through this, Lucy." "It's no problem, Clark. It's my sister and my niece or nephew we're talking about here. I'll do anything for them." "Thank you, Lucy. I can't tell you how much I appreciate that. I was going to ask Superman to stop by and check on you guys if I saw him, but it seems that you can take care of things. I think that I'll see if my Mom can come out and help, too. I haven't called her to tell her about all of this yet, but I know she'll want to help out." "Lois told me all about your Mom and her, uh, artwork." Lucy heard Clark chuckle over the wire. "She sounds great. I can't wait to meet her." "You'll like her. Can I talk to Lois?" "Yeah, let me get her." Lois picked up the phone in their bedroom. "Hi, honey. How's work?" "I miss you, too. Anything big on the Secretary of State?" "No, nothing going on today. Even Superman seems to have taken the day off." "Well, that's good, I guess." "Are you okay?" "I'm fine, Clark. Honest. Daddy didn't come in and I doubt Mother will be back after last night." Lucy had hung up the other extension and was now standing in the doorway with a puzzled look on her face. "Really, I'm okay." "Well, maybe Superman could fly my Mom out to stay with you. I'm sure Lucy needs to get back to work soon and we wouldn't have to worry about, well, you know." "I know, Clark. I'd love to spend time with your Mom. If it's okay with her and Superman, have him bring her, if you see him. It would be really nice to have his phone number or something." Clark laughed. "It would, wouldn't it? You get some rest, sweetie, and I'll call Mom. Have a good day." "I will. I love you." "I love you, too. 'Bye." "'Bye." Lois hung up the phone. Lucy didn't wait long. "What happened last night with Mom?" "Oh, she tried to come to see us. Clark saw her parking and met her downstairs. He wouldn't let her come up and she was mad. Really mad." Lois sighed. "Clark doesn't know I watched out the window, but I did. I think the last time I saw her that mad was when you told her you moving in with what's-his-name the day after you graduated." Lucy grimaced. "That mad, huh? I thought she was going to blow a gasket that day. Her face turned so red that she looked like a tomato! And that was a classic babble speech if I ever heard one." "I remember. She didn't get to give one of her big speeches. Clark somehow got her back into the car and on her way in less than three minutes." "Three minutes?! WOW!" Lucy was amazed. "Mom never gives up that easily. Clark must have turned on the charm or something." Lois laughed. "Clark can pretty persuasive. I don't know what he told her, but whatever it was it worked. Now, enough about me - what about you and Jimmy?! Since when are you two together?" Lucy settled in on the bed. Her eyes shone as she started talking about the new love of her life. "Well, I went by the Planet a couple of months ago, and you weren't there. Jimmy showed me around and asked if I'd like to go out sometime. I told him that I didn't want to go out with a friend of my sister's. He seemed pretty surprised that I thought you were his friend." Lois laughed. "I guess I can see that. I can be pretty abrupt with him when I'm upset or he can't find what I'm looking for." "I know how you can be, Lois. Anyway, a couple of weeks later, he called me up and we went out. He really is a sweet guy, you know. Anyway, we talked about it and we decided that we didn't want to tell you right away." Lucy grinned at her big sister. "That's why I can't be too mad at you for not telling us right away, but at least I didn't run off and marry him!" Lois laughed with her. "I wish you would have told me. How are things going with you now?" "They are wonderful. Jimmy is an amazing guy. He's really sweet and he takes care of me. Not like Clark takes care of you - I mean, getting Superman to take you to a deserted island. I don't think Jimmy could pull that off! But he always treats me like a lady. He's a real gentleman when I'm around. Lois, how did you know that Clark was the one for you?" "It's a bit early for that isn't it?" "Well, you knew CJ was the only one for you in like 10 minutes, didn't you?" "Well, yes, but I'm weird. We're weird. It's not like that for most people, I don't think. What makes you think that Jimmy could be the one for you, anyway?" "I don't know. I've never felt this way about anyone before. When he kisses me, I mean, I can't describe it. My heart pounds in my chest. I can't breathe. My knees get all weak and I have a hard time standing up. It's like there are fireworks going off in my head. Fireworks, shooting stars and flashbulbs all rolled up together. I feel like I'm floating in the clouds. And you know what makes this so much different? It's not about me. It's not that he can make me feel good about myself. I mean, don't get me wrong, he goes out of his way to make sure I'm happy, but I want to make him happy. I want to know what he likes and what makes him tick and find out all about him and what I can do to make his life a little better, a little easier. And it's not about him either. Most of my boyfriends have all been about them. What do I have to do for him? What do I have to do to keep him from leaving? It's not like that with Jimmy. With Jimmy I do those things because I want to. And he tries to do the same things for me. It's not just physical attraction with Jimmy. I mean, even though we're living together, we haven't well, you know." Lucy blushed a little bit. "I love being with him and sleeping close to him, but we talked about it and decided that we didn't want to pressure each other into something we aren't ready for. When it happens, it happens. That makes him different than any other guy I've ever dated. They were all after one thing and one thing only. Jimmy's not like that. He wants to be with me for me, not for my body." Tears were beginning to sneak out Lois' eyes. "Now who's babbling?" Both sisters laughed. "He sounds like Clark in a lot of ways. I've worked with Jimmy for almost a year now, but I've never really got to know him really well. Clark didn't pressure when we met in D. C. and he still doesn't. Neither one of us were really ready for the whole wedding thing and even though I got pregnant on our wedding night, after that, it was difficult for both of us to commit fully to a relationship - a complete relationship - when we didn't really know each other as people. It was after I found out I was pregnant, that, we, uh, well, I'm not going into details with you!" Lucy laughed. "Good, I don't want details! I do want to know if it was everything you hoped it would be after, well, your less enjoyable experience with you-know-who." "Lucy," Lois giggled, "it was 'super'!" ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 10 Apr 2001 21:39:03 -0400 Reply-To: Kath Roden Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: Kath Roden Subject: Re: FOLC Birthday MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Congratulations Pam!! As for the timeline (I don't think that I ever gave that), it's sometime fairly early 1st season as far as Lois attitude goes (she didn't get worried about Clark), but in this little world, she was going to marry Luthor very early on as well - say less than 1/2 way through - and Clark still told her he loved her and yada yada. It's been a couple of months since then. Does that make sense? FDK always welcome! CM ***** >From Part 5 After two hours, Jimmy finally was able to show just the man in the window. They watched as he opened the safe and took out the briefcase containing the Kryptonite. "Jimmy, we need to get a good look at his face." "I know, I'm working on it," Jimmy replied as his fingers flew over the keyboard. "I think I've... got... it. There we go." On the screen appeared a blurry image of a man. Lois' sharp intake of breath made it obvious that she knew the person in question. "Who is it?" "Never mind that now. Let's go." ***** Part 6 "Bobby, I need information and I need it now." "You got food for me?" "Bobby, you know me. I've brought you food more times than... than... well, lots of times. I didn't have time to stop and get any, but you know I'm good for it. Clark's missing and I've got to find him." The tears in Lois' voice and her eyes were enough to convince Bobby. "I'll take a rain check, but just this once. Don't think it'll ever happen again and if it gets around, I swear I'll deny it. What do you need?" "I need to know where this man is." Lois held out a picture printed from the video image. Bobby let out a low whistle. "You sure know how to pick 'em, don't you?" "Lois, what is he talking about?" "Shh, Jimmy." Lois wasn't pleased that Jimmy was being so persistent. "So can you help us, Bobby?" "Sure. You know I can, but it's gonna cost you and I mean more than a good desert. We're talking protection. Superman style." "Bobby, I swear. As soon as I can find him, I'll have him keep an eye out for you." And Lois knew that she would, as soon as she found him. But finding Clark came first. "Okay. Well here's the deal. This guy is called Joe. That's all anyone knows about him. No one really knows who he works for, but whoever it is has money. Three years ago, the rumor had it that he worked for Luthor but no one could ever confirm it and no one really thought Luthor would be involved with someone so slimy." "Any idea what he's been up to lately?" "Well, he's been doing some big jobs. High tech ones. He knows his electronics. Word on the street is that he's the one who did the LexTech job." Jimmy let out a low whistle. "Man, he must be good. They have the best technology in the world, better than even the Department of Defense." Bobby just looked at him. "Who's the kid, Lois?" "Oh, an errand boy that Perry is trying to let be my photographer and protector until we find Clark. What else? Spill it, Bobby." "I heard this morning that he had a big job earlier this week, some lab or other." "Star Labs?" "Maybe. The guy didn't know. Anyway, someone with lots of money wanted something out of this lab and it had something to do with Superman. Maybe. Where's the Big, Blue Boyscout been anyway?" "What do you mean?" "It's all over the streets. No one has seen him in like three days. The real crooks are starting to feel invulnerable." "As far as I know he's around." Lois shrugged. "I haven't seen him in a couple of days either, but that's not unusual." "I thought you two were tight." "We are, kind of. But it's not like he calls everyday or anything. So where is Joe now?" "Last I heard he's holed up over at a warehouse on 5th near the pier." "Any idea who's financing him now? Luthor's been dead for a long time now." Bobby shook his head. "Sorry. That's all I got. The warehouse is supposed to be a front for the mob or something, but don't hold me to that." "Thanks, Bobby. As soon as I can, three 10 course meals - all for you. You're the best! Let's go, Jimmy." With that, the ever determined Lois Lane headed out for her next story that this time could save the life of her best friend. ========================================================================= Date: Wed, 11 Apr 2001 00:57:46 -0500 Reply-To: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: "Marilyn L. Yeah, I'm writing again . I'm having a great time, except that some time in the last 2 years all my betas drifted away. I'm in the process of putting together Full Circle II, and I find myself on my own. I'm looking for a Beta or 3... I need FoLCs that can read and get back to me quickly, as the game-plan is to put this out, one or two chapters a day, NEXT WEEK. I don't need perfection, just glaring plot holes, major grammar problems, and L&C canon (of course). A few other things... this will be a long fic (probably 120 pages or so... say, 40-50,000 words), so I need someone who will stay with it. It's a tearjerker, with a character-death, so you have to be able to handle the Kleenex with one hand and the keyboard with the other. Finally, a knowledge of my original Full Circle canon is helpful, as this one follows by about 8-9 years. Okay... yeah, I'm asking for the world . I want to get this done, though. It's been brewing in my mind for the last 2 years, and I already have the first 4 chapters or so typed and ready-to-go. The outline is complete, bugs worked out, and storyline ready-to-rock. The rest is just a matter of typing, and between Spring Break and a speed of about 70wpm, I'll be sending you perhaps 6,000 words a day to peruse, starting... ummm... tomorrow . This show was both funny and enjoyable. Admittedly, it's only the pilot episode so we have a way to go before character development gets to the point we need to see them every week. However, both Michael and his co-stars did a great job introducing the characters and making us enjoy the interaction between them. Here's hoping that this UPN series won't suffer the fate of all to many enjoyable though low rated shows. Lois had 'shoo-ed' him out of the kitchen, demanding an hour of quiet and peace while she made dinner. It had been too tempting an opportunity to resist. Perhaps, if he had been wise, he would have agreed meekly and left, especially as the gleam in her eyes and the set of her jaw were all too familiar signs of a determined, absolutely-not-to-be-deterred, Lois. But he had stayed, lingered until Lois had literally pushed him out the door, her mock-stern tones mingling with her laughter. Standing for a few moments at a loss as to what to do, a glance at the stacks of papers and files lying in various corners of the room had inspired him, and he'd set to work, separating what they'd looked over from what they still had to see, and adding to an ever-increasing pile of now useless papers. Despite their best efforts, work always seemed to follow them home - not that either one of them really minded. They both shared a passion for their work, and it increased when they could do it together. Partners. Partners in every sense of the word. Clark had smiled as he'd thought about how lucky he was. Lois meant the world to him, and he could hardly imagine what life would be like without her. Since the moment he'd met her, everything had taken on a new meaning, a new depth. Every feeling was heightened and brought into sharper focus; every wish and hope was nearer, and happiness... happiness was suddenly attainable. His life before her seemed like a dream: pleasant, sad at times, and always drawn on a canvass of loneliness. And just like a dream, it was misty, elusive. Life with Lois was reality, and as better than the dream as the light is from the shadow. Ironically enough, he felt sometimes as if he were in a dream. He had found the person he'd been looking for all his life. They'd fallen in love, they were married to each other, and every day was better than the one before. And she was in his house, in their home - grumbling over something in the kitchen. He'd barely managed to hold back a laugh as he'd grabbed the folders he wanted and headed up the stairs to the attic. Looking around carefully, he x-rayed box after box until he found exactly what he needed. "Perfect," he thought, as he headed toward a medium-sized cardboard box that he knew was half full of papers and books, with plenty of room for the papers he held. He recognized Lois's handwriting. This must be one of the boxes they'd moved from her apartment, he thought, as he shuffled through the contents of the box, rearranging the various items to make more space. Magazines, many loose papers full of writing that was crossed and recrossed in many places (which left Clark wondering what they were and why Lois had decided to keep them), a paperback novel or two whose well-worn appearance attested to the fact that they had once been favourites, and a notebook. He'd have to ask Lois about the papers - the corners of his mouth lifted up in a smile as he imagined teasing her about novels and writing styles and Kerths and Pulitzers and anything else he could think of. She would give as good as she got, too, and she would laugh and make him laugh, he thought. His smile broadened and his eyes glowed with a light born of a feeling deep in his heart, a look that would have brought tears to Lois's eyes. But he frowned as he glanced at the notebook. It was an ordinary notebook, the kind Lois usually carried in her bag and wrote story notes in. Why would she be keeping one of those? Curious, he flipped through several pages before coming to an abrupt stop. The first part looked like any other of her numerous notebooks, and then came a few closely written pages. His lips tightened as he gazed at the tear-stained pages, the blurred words telling the clearest story of all. He hated the thought of Lois crying. Slowly, he flipped through the remaining pages. A complete blank. Clark closed the notebook and stared at it for a moment. A curious, dull ache spread through his heart. This is ridiculous, he thought. He couldn't be feeling pained over tears she had shed long ago. Nevertheless, his throat constricted as he opened it one last time. About to return it to the box, his glance fell on the tear-stained pages, and the first lines caught his eyes. It could only have been that time. Lois could only have written this at one time, he realized immediately - when he had had to leave and go to New Krypton. The last son of Krypton, he thought bitterly, going to the rescue of a faraway planet torn by civil war. Clark had never even made it to New Krypton, but it had affected him deeply. Meeting people he'd thought didn't exist, finding out that he was not the last of his species, not one of a kind, not alone in the universe... it was something he had dreamed of and wondered about for years and years. And yet when Zara and Ching had come, it had been different. They had asked him to leave Earth, and he'd realized that he hadn't been alone for some time, and that they, although they were like him and he was like them, were pulling him back into loneliness - a loneliness worse than that he'd felt before - of a different kind, and without the hope. He'd always known there was something missing; he'd known that he had been searching for something all his life. When he'd met Lois, he'd somehow realized that the search was over, and that he was finally where he belonged. But he had felt compelled to go. What else could he do? He'd felt a responsibility he couldn't neglect. The decision had been made almost immediately - he couldn't deny that he felt it was his duty to go - but he'd lingered, postponed, and tarried, made excuses, argued, and put off making a decision, hoping someone would do it for him - even though the decision was made. It hadn't happened that way. His parents and then Lois had said he should do what *he* felt he needed to do - leaving the decision in his hands and showing him that they would support him; that no matter how it hurt them, they would stand by him to do the right thing. He'd almost wished they hadn't. He'd hoped they would oppose - although he would ultimately go, there would've been something for him to hold on to. Maybe... Maybe he'd wanted someone to cling to Clark Kent. He'd been afraid. Not of Lord Nor or of dying, but of losing Clark Kent. And he'd known that that was what he would be doing, just as he'd known that Lois and his parents hadn't known, couldn't have known. Maybe the New Kryptonians had in some measure known, but they couldn't have really understood; they hadn't known what he would be leaving back on Earth. Everything that was of value to him would have faded away, turning into distant memories that he would recall vaguely, as if thinking of someone else, someone he might have liked to be, but someone very different. Someone who had once been known as Clark Kent That last day in the Daily Planet, he'd been saying goodbye to Clark Kent, and all that went with him. To life on Earth, his job, his friends, his mom and dad... to the blue sky and the yellow sun... to his life as a human, and to Lois. "In my heart, I am your husband." "And I am your wife." Even now, it was too much to bear. The love, the trust, the confidence she'd placed in him. It had been Clark Kent who'd flown out of the Daily Planet windows, and it had still been Clark Kent in the small spacecraft that had raced into space. But Lord Kal-El was there too. And Lord Kal-El had grown. Once he had stepped into that role, it had been almost too easy. Kal-El had taken charge; he had been a leader with a mission to accomplish and a plan to create. His people had obeyed him and followed his orders, whether they'd completely agreed or not. Lord Nor had been an enemy to be neutralized... and even crushed. Lord Kal-El would've been capable of many things that to Clark would have seemed inconceivable. Power was heady, and although part of him hadn't enjoyed it and had been embarrassed by the deference that'd accompanied it, another part of him had been thrilled. He's been afraid - of himself. He'd been afraid of what he might have become. Although Lord Kal-El wasn't a bad man - indeed, far from it, he would have been a great man - it just wasn't what Clark wanted, what he believed he ought to be. It scared him to realize how easily he could have become Lord Kal-El - that that part of him existed, and was very real. In the short time he had been with the New Kryptonians, he had had a glimpse of another side of himself: a side that hadn't had the chance to develop in so short a time, but which had left Clark with a vivid image of what might have happened if he had gone to New Krypton for a long time. Clark remembered a lot of what had happened at the time. He'd flown to the Kryptonian mother ship intending to travel to New Krypton, but returning almost immediately as the news that Lord Nor was on Earth had reached him. 'Home,' his heart had sung, even though he knew things would be difficult until Nor had been defeated. He had been very glad to be back on earth with Lois, and he had been pleased to see Jimmy and Perry at the Daily Planet. But it had been Kal-El who had commandeered the building - Kal-El, who had laid the plans that took him to Smallville to try and defeat Lord Nor, and to save people he cared about. And he had almost died. Things couldn't have gotten much worse then; surprisingly, they had gotten a little better. Lord Nor no longer had the support of the Council, and Lord Trey was finally completely on Clark's side. Kal-El had challenged Lord Nor, hoping to resolve things once and for all, and Superman had arrived to defend Earth, and to prove everything he stood for. The confrontation in Metropolis. The hardened expression, then the fear. The brief moment before of a hard, cruel impulse. Like a lost child, everything had seemed big and looming and unfamiliar, and every sound hostile. He remembered... Lois coming back to him. Him fainting, his being shot. Lois running to him, saving him once again. Lois. A sudden noise caught his attention, and he looked up to see Lois standing in the doorway. "Hey there, stranger," she said. She seemed to sense his mood, for as she got closer her expression grew softer, and she sat down beside him and wordlessly held his hand. At the touch of her hand in his, the kaleidoscope of emotions always connected with this one woman swirled around him and enveloped him. He wrapped his arm around her, and was pleased and comforted when she moved closer to him and laid her head on his shoulder. They sat together in a world of their own, while the attic hung in that timeless moment between day and night. A noise from outside intruded, and they both looked around, realizing it was already much darker. Lois stood up. "C'mon, Clark," she said. "Let's go eat." He got up willingly, but stood there for a moment looking at her. An ungovernable impulse seized him, and he couldn't have stopped even if he had wanted to. He gathered her in his arms and kissed her. "I love you, Lois," he said against her hair. "I know." She pulled back a little to look into his eyes. "I know, Clark. And I love you. But," she added, after a moment, "I made dinner and it's getting cold. So come on!" She smiled at him and playfully tugged at his sleeve, pulling him behind her. The last rays of the sun faded slowly from the room, the shadowy nooks looking even more mysterious in the wan light. In the corner, the spider stretched all eight legs lazily and walked to another corner of its delicate home. "Dinner?" he asked worriedly. "Ohh!" she replied, indignantly. The sound of masculine laughter floated up the stairs and spilled into the lonely attic, and on the floor, forgotten, lay a small notebook. For this story lets say that the camera had never been dropped = and the photos were indeed real. The rest of the story is the same up = until the press conference.=20 ******=20 Superman stood at the podium, facing the crowd, as he prepared himself = for what he was about to do. Now that the time had come to reveal = himself, he wasn't sure where to begin. The crowd looked up at him = expectantly, waiting for whatever he had to say. Attempting to swallow = the lump in his throat, he began to speak, "Ladies and gentlemen of the = press, thank you for coming here today."=20 Clark found himself at a loss for how to continue, should he blurt it = out or build up to it? Pondering that, Clark suddenly had an idea. As = the crowd waited with baited breath, he began to tell his tale. "It = would probably be easiest for me to explain if I started at the = beginning. A little over thirty years ago, a man named Jor-El discovered = that his planet was going to explode. His wife, Lara, and he decided = that they needed to save their son Kal-El from their world's fate, so = they began constructing a space ship for the infant."=20 Clark paused, scanning the crowd; all he saw were expectant faces = waiting for him to continue. Then he saw Lois, who was standing where he = had set her down after rescuing her from Mr. Goode's trap. She smiled at = him supportively, conveying in that look that she would accept whatever = came.=20 After a taking a moment to gather his composure again, he continued, = "They didn't have much time, but they worked diligently and tirelessly = and succeeded in building a ship for interplanetary travel. The ship was = small, just large enough to house a baby, but it was enough for their = purposes."=20 Remembering his natural parents, Clark's eyes began to water slightly, = but Lois' support helped him to keep composure. In a strong, determined = voice he continued his narrative. "Amazingly, they also found a planet = sufficiently similar to their own that Kal-El would be able to survive = there. Miraculously, the inhabitants of said planet were physically = identical to them."=20 Now Clark's voice began to crack a bit, as he related the sacrifice his = natural parent's had gone through, to save his own life. "The little = time they had drew to a close, and Jor-El and Lara placed their infant = son into the ship and sent him on with heavy heart, only a few recorded = messages to be remembered by."=20 Clark then paused, on the verge of tears saying, "I'm sorry I need a = minute, this is hard for me to tell."=20 The crowd patiently waited as Clark collected himself again. He noticed = a few of them even had moist eyes, obviously feeling sympathy for the = couple and what they had gone through. He again sought Lois' support, = and saw that her eyes were also filled with tears. Clark realized then = that he had never really told her the full story like this, only bits = and pieces at a time. Drawing his strength from some unknown reserve, he = began again, "So as this tiny ship raced away from the doomed planet, it = gave its last gasp and exploded. All that was left rested in one tiny = spaceship hurtling across the galaxy."=20 Taking a deep breath, Clark went on with his story. "The ship followed = its course perfectly and came to the planet known as Earth. It's journey = nearly ended, it fell from the sky and crashed alongside a road in = Kansas. A kindly couple, who were unable to have children of their own, = saw the fireball and decided to check it out. They came upon a tiny = capsule, which opened when they approached. Inside they saw a little = baby boy, who was almost instantly endeared to their hearts. They = decided to take him in and raise him as their own."=20 Most of the crowd was obviously moved by this story, and a few even had = handkerchiefs out and were wiping their eyes. Everyone was listening in = rapt attention as the story unraveled. To avoid keeping them waiting too = long, Clark kept his narrative going, "Now this little boy grew up much = as any ordinary boy did, not knowing of his heritage at first. It wasn't = until he was about thirteen when his differences began to manifest = themselves. At first, he began hearing things he shouldn't have been = able to and to compound things, he began to see through some objects. = All this scared him immensely, and he feared he was going insane. One = day, he told his father about what was happening, and his father got = this strange look on his face, before telling him to sit down. The boy = then heard a fantastic story."=20 Clark paused for a moment; the memories of this time coming back full = force. It had been a very emotional time for him, and he was lucky to = have had such great parents to help him survive it. When he felt = composed enough, he returned to his story, "He was told about how he had = been found one day in some strange object they thought to be a space = ship. They didn't know where it had come from, but they thought it might = be a Russian experiment, or perhaps even one from the US. Maybe it was = even an extra terrestrial. Afraid of what might happen, but concerned = for the helpless infant, they hid the evidence and pretended the baby = was the illegitimate son of one of their relatives, who left the baby in = their care."=20 "This was difficult for the boy to swallow, but it did help to explain = what might be going on. Afraid of what might happen, his father having = warned him that if people knew about him they might want to 'dissect him = like a frog', he made the decision to keep everything a secret. After = many experiments, they got him a special pair of glasses to help him = learn to control his special vision abilities. Being different was never = easy for him, and he often wished over the next few years that he was = normal."=20 Clark was amazed at how easily he had gotten through all that. It had = been a very rough time for him. It had been very hard growing up = different. By now he had come to terms with and even appreciated those = differences, but back then he would have given almost anything to get = rid of them. It was amazingly silent while he wasn't speaking. Clark = heard very little beyond people breathing and their hearts beating. He = realized he had what was sometimes referred to as a captive audience.=20 As he continued to tell the story, it became easier and easier. The next = set of words came out with almost no effort whatsoever, "As his = abilities developed, the young man had to ask himself a question. 'What = was he going to do with these abilities?' He made the decision to help = people out whenever he could, because he was unable to sit by and do = nothing when he could help. The problem with this was avoiding getting = caught."=20 Clark paused to take a breath again before continuing, "You see, he = still was afraid of people finding out about him. He wanted to keep his = abilities secret, but every so often he'd slip up and he'd move to = another place where people didn't know him. He traveled the world for = many years, since graduating college, until one day he came to = Metropolis."=20 Taking another break for effect, Clark looked at all the people intent = on him. This was it; he was now going to spell everything out for them. = Sure they could have figured it out by now, but that wasn't the same as = actually telling them. But by now he had no choice but to continue.=20 "In Metropolis he found what he had been searching for nearly as long as = he could remember. While he was at an interview for his dream job, this = fiery, beautiful woman stormed in on the interview. He was instantly = captivated and knew at that instant; he needed to find a way to stick = around. The problem was how; he couldn't just ignore people in need. = Well, the very next day inspiration struck; on his way to work a man was = trapped down a manhole in an explosion, without thinking he rushed to = the rescue. His coworker, the woman from the office, upon seeing the = state of his clothing remarked that he should do what she did, bring a = change of clothes to work. This planted a seed for an idea. He discussed = it with his mother and she designed a suit, which would function as a = disguise when he went to help. And thus Superman was born."=20 Taking one final break before making the final leap, he passed the point = of no return. "That woman was Lois Lane, and the man was Clark Kent. So = you see, I could not be having an illicit affair with Lois Lane, because = Lois Lane is my wife."=20 At this, the crowd erupted in questions, both directed at him and Lois. = "So you've been hiding this from us all this time?"=20 "When did you plan on revealing this?"=20 "What does it feel like to be married to Superman?"=20 Superman raised his hand, calling for quiet, "Please everyone, clam = down, if you will permit me a few more minutes, I will answer your = questions one at a time."=20 "First of all, I want to warn any criminals thinking of using my wife or = parents to control me, to forget about it. It's been done before and = frankly I'm getting sick of the attempts. I can't promise to be as = gentle as I have been in the past if it happens again." Clark said = somewhat menacingly, looking into the cameras with a cold hard stare.=20 "Second, I would like to remind everyone that I did this simply so I = could have a life of my own, in private. I just wanted what every man = wants, a job, and a family. Having these abilities, I feel I need to = help out when I can, even when it's meant sacrificing part of my own = life. I ask you to please accept this, there was no ill will, and no one = was harmed by my secret. I also would ask you to keep my private life = just that private. When I'm in the Superman suit, at a rescue I'll give = interviews, but when I'm not please leave my family, friends, and me = alone."=20 Having said what he wanted to, he then prepared himself to face their = questions. "Ok, now I'll take some questions. One at a time, please." = Pointing at one of the reporters he said, "Ok, you first."=20 The reporter from the Star stepped forward a bit and asked, "So Diana = Stride was right then? How do you explain both you and Clark Kent = showing up at that press conference?"=20 Clark suppressed a sigh, he should have expected questions like this, in = fact there were probably more along the same lines coming. Phrasing his = response carefully, Clark replied, "Yes, Diana Stride was correct in her = statement that Clark Kent and Superman were the same person. I need some legal advise {and no I'm not in trouble...but maybe my muse is! LOL! ;)} Anyway, I need someone to email me who can provide me with info on what exactly goes on during a trial. What constitutes a "objection" from the opposing side. How long would a court meet during the day for the trial? Etc...etc... The first person who responds to this email will be the person I will discuss my questions with. Even if more than one of you respond, that's fine because I'd like to get a wide range of scenerios. Would a doctor withhold information from a wife, regarding the husband, if it's after the fact? Example, Man has medical condition, asks to keep it from his wife. Man dies in car accident. Should doctor inform the wife. (Let's say the condition isn't life threatening...) Or on the reverse, let's say wife has a condition (pregnant, for example...) Oh the heck with it... Since I'm posting the story as it goes anyways... Lana was pregnant with Clark's child, and the Doctor of course knew. Lana died before she told Clark. Would the doctor tell Clark about it? Should he? I'm sorry that it's a slightly shorter segment but I've been trying to keep m= y posts to chapters. May it live up to all your expectations and, as alway= s, I'm looking forward to hearing your comments. = ~~~~~~~~~~ Chapter Six Enough Rope Lois' determination was soon put to the test as throughout the winte= r and spring the number of assaults on the merchant fleets increased, until= trade routes to all destinations came under attack. No matter what precautions were taken with the safety of these convoys they were still losing men and ships to the elusive attackers. Differing routes were planned and military vessels accompanied the slower and less well defende= d merchant craft, but it seemed that the enemy was always one step ahead; they always seemed to know the numbers and class of the support vessels a= nd the co-ordinates of the journeys and planned their attacks accordingly. The identity of the enemy also remained a mystery. Piracy of some form or other had always been a problem in the outer reaches of deep spac= e but mainly they had concentrated their attacks on older, privately owned= merchant ships. Now it seemed that these freebooters had joined forces a= nd were becoming more daring in their choice of targets. The Kryptonian authorities were more than a little suspicious that the Taureans were behind the newly formed threat; however, as the ships displayed no outwa= rd signs of planet of origin and were mostly of varying types and makes, thi= s couldn't be verified. Yet the raggle-tag fleet was well organised and their fire power was considerable. They did not always succeed in their= attacks but they did cause a great deal of death and destruction. Many Kryptonian families mourned the loss of a loved one due to the conflict a= nd soon the whole planet lived under an atmosphere of a world at war, even though the fighting wasn't, as yet, on their doorstep. = Lord Kal-El and his council were frustrated and angry. At the outse= t, a communique had been sent to Taurus requiring the leadership to order their privateers to desist in these attacks. Unfortunately, the ruling junta had denied all knowledge of the acts of piracy and so were unable t= o comply with the request. They had continued in their negation of responsibility throughout all further negotiations either with the High Council of Krypton or with a hastily convened deputation from the Federation of Planets. And yet it was obvious that these space marauders= must have a base and one that was out with the jurisdiction of the Federation. How else could they disappear so easily after each incident= ? Kryptonian forces and those of their allies tried desperately in tho= se early months of the new year to police the space ways, but with vast galaxies to patrol and quadrants where signed treaties forbade them acces= s, they had, as yet, been unable to discover the enemy's home base. And despite their suspicions of the race of Taureans, many, thus far, had not= even begun to question just where the piratical fleet was gaining the inside information which enabled the ambushes to inflict such destruction= . Lord Kal-El and his wife, however, were in little doubt of who was responsible, and under the cover of his mother's birth date celebrations,= the couple had gathered together all those whom they most trusted to discuss what could be done to unmask the culprit. The gathering was scheduled at Ro-Ellion as the big family home had long ago installed thought and sound shielding equipment which was alway= s updated to the latest specifications. There was a similarly shielded roo= m in the castle, but the First Couple didn't want to alert suspicion by its= use. Ideally, Kal would have liked to protect the whole of their little apartment' but, given that the trial was still sharp in everyone's memory= , he was reluctant to provide the small band of nobles, who still regarded Lois with distrust, more ammunition with which to attack her. Whatever they did at present must remain open to scrutiny, but he made a firm promise to himself and Lois, that as soon as the situation calmed, Lois would get the privacy that she needed and so much deserved. Meanwhile, on a clear rose-tinted night in the Kryptonian spring, a small band of dedicated conspirators met, under the cover of an innocent birthday dinner for a well-loved matriarch, to begin the fight-back on an= elusive and ruthless foe. Secrecy was important for the success of their= plotting; no one out with the small close-knit circle should learn of the= ir plans. Lady Lois-El was excited and elated. Her lively and resourceful nature demanded that she not accept intimidation -- and she had been acquiescent for too long. Now there was a chance to retaliate against those who had sought her downfall, and in a manner that was balm to her soul. Investigation and plotting and carrying through those stratagems were life's blood to the Earth girl and her spirit was so charged with wi= t and energy that she almost glowed. Certainly, on the journey to Ro-Ellio= n and all through dinner she had found it hard to remain still. And now, when the meal was passed and the toasts to Lara were drunk, as the party collected within the protected room, Lois' infectious enthusiasm bolstere= d Kal's resolve. = = When all were settled comfortably, the First Lord opened with a statement of intent. "I think each of you already knows the real reason behind this gathering." While he spoke, Kal looked searchingly into ever= y face and found each gaze rivetted on his own -- his mother with concerned= inquisitiveness; his father with his customary gentle support; Lord Trey,= who already suspected the nature of his plans, returned his look with gri= m determination; while Uncle Remy's eager interest reminded him so much of Lois. The three younger members of the group, Lara, Gellis and Ching waited in stoic silence; they would support the royal couple no matter wh= at they were asked to do. Lastly, his glance covered the woman by his side and at her answering smile of encouragement, Kal continued. "We are her= e tonight to begin our quest to bring down our enemy -- Rad-Nor." A stillness filled the room as each member of the group assimilated just what such a proposal might entail. "I think that might be a difficult task, my son," Jor-El put in reluctantly, opening up the discussion "Rad-Nor protects himself well." "I know, Father, and that's why we can't attack him in person, but I= believe his acolyte might be vulnerable." "Which one?!" Lord Remy asked with his impish sense of humour. Kal subconsciously returned the cryptic grin. "I think that this ti= me our goal is Jen-Mai." A few eyebrows were raised at the mention of the Second-Councillor, though truthfully no one was surprised. Mai hadn't won many friends in this small community and most of those present had, on a number of occasions, speculated that this slippery character might be the Taureans'= informant. Nevertheless, suspecting and proving did not always go hand-in-hand and it seemed no-one was prepared to air their views on the subject -- except, of course, Lois, who bounced out of her chair and face= d the company. "Come on guys! Mai has to be responsible for the leak! According t= o what Kal has told me, the Mais' estate isn't very productive and yet neither of them act as if they're short of money. You've all seen the clothes they wear; Jen-Mai has to have an alternative source of financing= Minerva's finery -- those jewels of her's are worth a king's ransom. And= he was the one who kept Kal occupied while Etta and I were being kidnapped." Lord Trey sent his first lady a slightly censorious look. There was= nothing he would like better than to see Jen-Mai discredited, but the man= was vindictive and this young woman was occasionally too daring for her o= wn good; he feared for her safety. "Milady, you really must be more circumspect; there was nothing to connect him with the kidnappers,." he cautioned. "I'd agree that he's the most likely suspect, and that he probably works for Nor. But they've both covered their tracks well and finding proof of our suspicions may not be easy. And we cannot move against either without firm evidence. Fortunately for us all, Jun-Li rushed his fences but his case is an example of what can happen when goin= g to trial without finding proof to back up an accusation." "There was no proof for Jun-Li to find," Kal chided Trey softly, "but= Lois and I take your point and that's why we've brought you all together today." "We have a plan," Lois announced, barely managing to suppress a temptation to crow. "Back where I come from we have a saying, 'give him enough rope to hang himself' and that's exactly what Kal and I plan on doing." tbc in Part 12 ========================================================================= Date: Fri, 13 Apr 2001 07:20:32 -0400 Reply-To: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: John Debbage <106532.433@COMPUSERVE.COM> Subject: Universal Union Book3/Part12 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Title: Universal Union Book3/Part 12 Author: Jenni Debbage Rating: PG-13 ~~~~~~~~~~ "Oh there's nothing I like better than when a plan comes together." = Remy offered brightly. "So, do you care to fill us in on this plan?" "That's exactly why you're here, Uncle," Kal was quick to inform. = "But first, I have to remind everyone that this has got to remain our secret -- otherwise it just won't work and Mai and Nor will escape, free = as birds." "I doubt that we have to tell you that we're sworn to secrecy, Kal.= " = That from his mother who was privately praying that this wouldn't be a wi= ld goose chase. "And I hope this is a workable scheme, because Mai and Nor are getting away with murder." "I understand how important this is, Mother, and with a little bit o= f good fortune, we should be able to unmask Mai for the traitor that he is.= .. but whether we can tie Nor into this setup depends mostly on taking Mai alive," everyone remembered what had happened to Rad-Nor's past employees= , "and persuading him to confess." = Kal's eyes never left the assembled conspirators, flickering over ea= ch one in turn as he tried to assess their reactions to his revelations. He= needed all of their co-operation and he was heedful of the fact that it w= as a risky undertaking and one, he conceded, which wasn't wholly ethical. = Yet desperate times called for desperate measures and as Lois had so forcefully pointed out, they were dealing with men to whom lying and subterfuge came so easily. It was also a complicated plot and one where they would have to call on others to play a part. At anytime it could fa= ll to pieces if their targets got the slightest notion that they were being duped. But he was getting ahead of himself; first he had to convince the= se people closest to him to accept the plan. Meanwhile Lois was growing impatient -- sometimes Kal obsessed too much for his own good. "Kal, enough stalling and get to the point." Her= voice sounded hard-edged with exasperation. = "Lo-is!" he exclaimed in high dudgeon, but he quickly complied with her request. "Some of you might not be too pleased by our intentions, bu= t if you could hear us out without interruption, then Lois and I will gladl= y listen to your objections... and suggestions." Out of the corner of his eye he could see Lois chomping at the bit. "We intend to lead Jen-Mai up= the garden path." = His audience seemed somewhat bemused by this statement and were stil= l regarding him expectantly. "Sorry," he grinned with a touch of sheepishness. He'd spent so many hours discussing this scheme with Lois= that he'd automatically used another Earth metaphor. "Another of Lois' terms! It will involve careful planning, but basically we feed Mai with false information about the next convoy and see if that gets back to the Taureans." The elder members of the group exchange troubled glances, until finally Trey vocalised all their concerns. "But such defence plans are usually reviewed by the security council, of which Mai is a member, and I= surely don't have to remind you, Kal, that to lie to your council would b= e considered highly irregular, if not illegal." "But that's the beauty of our plan..." Lois almost sounded self-satisfied. "Kal doesn't have to lie... well not exactly... just not= tell the whole truth. I'm the one who has to lay the false trail and I'm= pretty good at that, believe me." "Sounds intriguing! Do tell us!" Lord Remy was certainly entering into the spirit of the conspirator. = Chairs were pulled closer together as the little band huddled in the= nature of all good agent provocateurs and voices naturally lowered even though they were in a soundproofed room. Between them, like two well-oil= ed cogs, Lois and Kal recounted the intricate plan -- feeding each other lin= es and taking up the recital when the other failed to find the words. It wa= s an old ruse and one which had been used on Earth since ancient days, when= the citizens of Troy had been fooled by a wooden horse. Lord Kal-El woul= d give his council certain facts, which would be the truth but would simply= hide other facts. It would be Lois' job to bait the trap. When the tal= e was told, the others sat back in their seats and contemplated in silence for some moments. "I think it's a great plan," the young excitable Gellis announced. = "And I'm looking forward to my part." Then noticing that she was being regarded with some asperity by the older and more important members of th= e group, the lady-in-waiting subsided, a little crest fallen. "Of course, = no one asked for my opinion, but I'd just like to say that I'm willing to do= anything to help out." But Gellis wasn't without courage and she recovered with a dignity uncommon in one so young. "It's just that my brother was amongst the defenders of the last convoy and he was injured a= nd some of his soldiers were killed. I'd be happy to be a part of anything that can stop this horrible killing." Lara offered a sympathetic smile. "I'm sorry, Gellis, I'd forgotten= about your brother. I hope that he's feeling better. And thank you for reminding us of the seriousness of this situation and that we must put an= end to it before it escalates into an all-out war." "I agree, Lara. I think the plan has merit and, as none of the rest= of us have come up with anything half as workable, I say we should go ahe= ad and implement it." Remy recommended. Always the more cautious of the two councillors, Trey sounded more sceptical. "But it's such a complicated ploy -- we would have to choose our players carefully and they would have to be sworn to secrecy." Kal nodded in sage agreement. "I'd advise that we keep our recruits= down to a bare minimum, but I believe that we can get away with that by designating one commander on a need-to-know basis in each section involve= d and informing the council that it's for security reasons. The captains o= f the first convoy will carry sealed orders which are to be opened only whe= n they're in space...." "And all their contacts will be with our man in the communications section," Lois added. "And we place a force field round the fleet so no= untoward message leaks out." "Yes, we must make it look like we're taking every precaution with t= he safety of the real convoy, which of course, we are." Remy's eyes began t= o twinkle with appreciation. He did love intrigue -- it made him feel youn= g again. "And our other fleet?" Lara's mind was working overtime, anxious to= cover every detail. Kal wasn't surprised that it was his mother who had asked that question; she had always been quick to see the whole picture. "A small force but made up of our fastest and best attack ships and crews. I'm confident they'll be able to damage if not destroy the pirates. Besides,= the object of this mission isn't to rout the Taureans, but to discover th= e identity of their spy." "And that's where the girls come in? You want them to feed false information to Lady Mai?" The dowager Lady queried, the direction of her= worried thoughts written clearly on her normally serene face. She didn't= doubt for a moment Lois' ability to dissimulate, and she was fairly sure that Gellis could carry off her part, but her daughter Zara was a straightforward, shy girl and play acting would not be her forte. And ye= t Zara had kept hidden her feelings for Captain Ching; it had taken a perceptive stranger to uncover that secret. "Do you think you can fool Lady Minerva-Mai?" Jor echoed his wife's anxieties. = Lois flashed an answer. "That shouldn't be a problem. Ever since it's become fairly well known that Kal confides most of his dealings to m= e, I've acquired a new best friend. She follows me around like a stray dog,= rooting for scraps. And when she hears a special tidbit that will result= in my falling flat on my face once it becomes public, neither Minerva nor= her slimy husband will resist taking the bait." = "But won't they act immediately and report you to the council for talking indiscreetly?" The elder Lord of El had steered clear of politic= al intrigue for most of his life. To him, the world of science was a whole lot easier to understand and to chart his way through; test tubes and theories didn't bite back -- well not often. "Lois and I don't believe so . . . let's face it, the Mais are bound= to conclude that the denunciation of Lois' indiscretion would have a greater impact if it came on the heels of the loss of another of our convoys." Kal explained. "Oh yes, I can just see the headlines," Lois annunciated her words b= y a display of her hands sketching the banner headline in the air. "First Lady's careless talks costs lives!'" Then with a snap of her fingers she= confided. "They won't be able to resist!" = "No they won't!" Lord Remy warbled gleefully then quickly donned a more serious demeanour, proving that the elderly mind was still as sharp = as ever. "Who would you have lead the diversionary fleet?" "It would require someone in whom we have absolute trust." Trey stroked his chin anxiously as he considered the options. = "I've already discussed the proposal with Dax-Ver and he's agreed to= come out of retirement to command the squadron," Kal disclosed, reminding= everyone that Lord Ver had once been a five-star general in the security forces, "with Captain Ching as his aide de camp." At these words Lara-El's gaze flew to her daughter. How would Zara take the news that Ching would undertake such a dangerous mission? And y= et there was no visible shock in her child's face. Perhaps Zara had strengths she had never suspected and perhaps the younger members had already discussed these plans -- sending Ching on this risky but importan= t sortie would give the Captain plenty of opportunity for advancement. Bu= t Kal-El was continuing with his briefing and the lady turned her attention= back to the issue at hand. "It won't be a big force, a transport ship to fool the privateers wi= th two crack squadrons of fighters hidden on board and a couple of our largest battle-cruisers in support -- enough to resist the opposition, an= d, if we're very lucky, to capture at least one of the attack vessels. Mind= you that's only a secondary goal. The main thing is that if the enemy do= show up, then it means that our suspicions were right and the Mais have passed on the information; information that Lady Minerva will convenientl= y overhear Lois discussing with Zara and Gellis." "Yes, I think that might work." Trey was slowly allowing himself to= be convinced that their machinations would succeed but, nevertheless, he intended to make sure that it would be as fool proof as was possible. = "Dax-Ver's force would have to be gathered in secrecy." "Not necessarily!" The First Lord's narrative was invigorated and i= t didn't take much to guess that he would have liked to be part of the forc= e. "Dax has quite openly voiced his frustrations with the military's high command on their failure to confront these freebooters and he's already taken himself off the reserve list and requested the battleships and two squadrons...." "And he's ready to take off in search of these pirates just as soon= as his fleet is space- worthy and he gains the council's permission...." = Lois' excitement was also evident as she took up the explanation. "Well, we can certainly make sure that the council approves his mission -- can't we, Trey?" Lord Remy obviously favoured the scheme and was intent on carrying his more circumspect fellow councillor along with him and to the relief of all, the grey-head of the Prime Minister began t= o nod slightly. Realising that Trey was on the brink of agreement, Kal pushed a litt= le harder. "I'm positive that between the three of us we can persuade the council to accept Ver's involvement. After all, they're at their wit's e= nd on what to do about these attacks and the people are very concerned -- th= ey expect results from the security forces. Dax-Ver has an awesome reputati= on and I think the council will be only too glad to send him out in pursuit = of those responsible for the attacks." "And they'll allow Ver to act on his own initiative and no one will know exactly what his position may be...." Again Remy fed the correct line. "Allowing Dax to be close enough to the vicinity of the decoy transporter to come to its aid," Kal said with a flourish. = = At the mention of the decoy, Trey sat up straighter in his chair -- = he had found a flaw. "And how do you propose to launch the merchant vessel without everyone finding out? And get the two squadrons on board?" = "That won't be difficult!" "No problem!" Lois and Kal grinned conspiratorially at each other as they spoke in= unison, then Kal fell silent allowing his lady to continue; after all, th= is was Lois' conception, although he had helped her form it into a cohesive plan. That had felt so good -- working together for the good of his people. "Once the original convoy is publicly on its way, a single transport= er will launch secretly from the security force's base on Ver's land. Dax a= nd Kal have a trusted commander in mind to take charge of the vessel...." "If the Mais find out they won't be suspicious -- in fact, they'll b= e expecting this after eavesdropping on Lois' gossiping...." "And no one else outside our own group will know the purpose of its launch, so it's quite likely to go unnoticed...." "And the squadrons will be with Ver who will rendezvous with the trader in space and transfer the fighter ships...." "And then we just wait and pray that the enemy take the bait." Between them, Lois and Kal had delivered the final act of the plot a= nd now they waited in breathless anticipation for the listeners' verdict. A= moment or two passed in silence. MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I think you could probably manipulate this situation to go either way, to fit whatever you're planning to do in your fic. For one thing, I think this depends somewhat on the relationship the doctor, wife, and husband have with each other. It also depends on the circumstances that surround Lana's death. For example, if she is in a car accident and is treated by an ER doctor yet dies fairly quickly, that doctor would likely never know that she is pregnant (the doctor wouldn't waste time doing a pregnancy test on a patient suffering from severe injuries from a car accident). However, if her death takes longer, her primary care physician might learn of her problem, have the chance to visit her in the hospital, and talk with Clark about her condition. Concerning autopsies, whether or not they even perform an autopsy would depend on the apparent cause of death. If Lana dies in a car accident, they would probably not do an autopsy, since it is obvious what killed her. However, if she just turns up dead one day, they would perform an autopsy and discover that she is pregnant. << My thought... Why would he? Wouldn't it be adding insult to injury for him to tell Clark about ANOTHER death? >> However, if there is an autopsy, I would say that the doctor would definitely tell the husband about a pregnancy. I've done a little research on the subject of patient-physician communication, and the current trend is towards an open, honest communication between physician and patient (and family, unless the patient tells the doctor to exclude the family). For example, now most doctors tell patients of a terminal diagnosis such as cancer, whereas decades ago (ie the 50s), most doctors acted more paternalistic, and were taught to keep such information to themselves, thinking that they're in some way sparing the patient some pain (though they are also sparing the patient the truth...) So if the doctor treating Lana is elderly and was taught to conceal information from patients, he might not tell a husband that his dead wife was pregnant, because he thinks he's sparing the husband's feelings. A younger doctor would be more likely to share such information. If for some reason Lana had asked the doctor not to tell her husband about her pregnancy (maybe insinuating that the husband wasn't the father or that she was planning on having an abortion without her husband's knowledge), the doctor probably would respect her wishes and not tell Clark. Bottom line answer: you could realistically work it either way. I hope this helps. Yep; corrupt politicians. My question is: who would Lois and Clark report them to? If they weren't going for the immediate headline, but wanted instead to bring the guy's activities to the attention of his party? I don't know enough about the American political system to know, for example, what office the leader of political parties holds. *Is* there a leader of the Republicans/Democrats? Say the party involved holds the Presidency - I haven't said anything about who commands a majority in Senate or the House of Representatives. (Does that matter?). And we have a senator who's been up to something he shouldn't. He happens to be a member of the same party as the president. So who should Lois and Clark take their information to, if they want something to be done about it? Thanks! This is a quick answer off the top of my head. I'm sure others will correct and/or add to it. Yes, the parties have heads. They are called National Chairmen (or women, although I don't think there's ever been a woman. Just another reason why the American party system is in such bad shape.) and there's a whole administrative infrastructure that goes with each party. These party heads run the day to day stuff, but, if the party holds the Presidency, then the President is the most influential in policy making. Others would the House and Senate leaders (Speaker, President pro tem etc...) in each party. Crooked politics being what they are, reporting dirty dealings to the political party Chair could easily lead to a cover up. Reporting the misdeeds to *both* party heads would be more likely to ensure that something would be done. Also, if a Senator is involved, he should be reported to the Senate Ethics committee and both party leaders in the Senate. The threat of public exposure is most likely to produce proper penalties. Hope that helps. :) Jude ----- Original Message ----- From: "Wendy Richards" To: Sent: Saturday, April 14, 2001 9:35 AM Subject: Question for fic: corrupt politicians > Okay; every country has them, and some fics just have to have them as one > of the old stand-by plot devices. Here on Long Island, we've had our share of corrupt politicians (but not federal ones) and the ONLY reason they got investigated and taken seriously was because our local newspaper did some in-depth investigating and reporting! Then the legal system takes notice and starts to investigate. The leader of one county's political party is currently in jail (though his crimes were with his business, not the political party) and the other political party in one large (and VERY corrupt) township on Long island has had cases that have gone to trial! (However, the voters there didn't even vote those folks out of office--in fact last fall they elected a new Congressman who used to be the Town Supervisor there!) But Newsday (our newspaper) was out in front of all these investigations! --Laurie ========================================================================= Date: Sat, 14 Apr 2001 12:33:40 -0500 Reply-To: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: Wendy Richards Subject: Re: Question for fic: corrupt politicians Thanks very much, Laurie and Jude. Each party has a chairman. The title is Chairman of the Republican/Democratic National Committe. I'm pretty sure that the chairman is usually chosen by the Presidential nominee of the party, so depending on who the corrupt politician is, it might not do any good to tell the party chairman. > Say the party involved holds the Presidency - I haven't said anything about > who commands a majority in Senate or the House of Representatives. So > who should Lois and Clark take their information to, if they want something > to be done about it? > Part the answer depends on what the person has been doing. For example, in Kentucky right now, the current Lieutenant Governor is being investigated for several instances of possible financial wrong-doing. The State Auditor was given a tip from a source that the Lt. Governor had state government employees do some of the legwork for planning his recent wedding to last year's Miss America. The Auditor, although of the same political party, began an investigation because of the financial nature of the alleged offenses. The Auditor passed along a tip alleging Medicare billing irregularities to the Federal Justice department which convened a grand jury investigation. Each party has a leader in both the House of Representatives and in the Senate. The President Pro-Tem is the leader of the party with the majority of senators. The Speaker of the House is the leader of the party with the majority of representatives. They are both elected by their respective chambers. There is also the party leader and the Whip (second in command, so to speak) of each party in each house of Congress. If Lois and Clark want the person to be stopped but without any publicity, I would think that they could inform the party chairperson or the leader of the party in the House or the Sendate if it is a senator or congressman. I honestly can't imagine any investigative journalist not running with the story first and letting the justice system take it up from there. They seem to always go with the story around here. Hope this helps, Ann
