In it, we have Clark wrestling between his duties as a reporter and his desires as Superman, we have Lois discovering Superman has feet of clay, and we have another character, who begins believing that Superman not only has feet of clay, but legs of clay as well, discovering that there is more to being a Superhero than he thought. Plot Summary -- for those who don't remember. Those of you who do remember the episode can skip on down. In Bolt from the Blue, Clark and Lois are tracking down a lead about Lex Luthor which has lead them to a cemetery. While there, Clark notices someone about to shoot himself. He changes into Superman, and grabs the gun from William Wallace Webster Waldecker just as lightning strikes. The lightening goes through Superman into Waldecker. After it's over, Superman gives Waldecker a pep talk, then leaves to rejoin Lois. After he leaves, Waldecker discovers he's gained Superpowers, apparently from the electricity. Unknown to either of them, Gretchen Kelley, who has a secret laboratory in the cemetery where she is trying to resurrect Luthor, also notices the power transfer, and is determined to figure out how to reproduce the effects in a laboratory. On the way to work the next morning, Lois is almost hit by a car. Clark is about to save her, when another Superfigure swoops down and rescues her. It's Waldecker, trying out his new career as a Superhero. Lois is astounded a few hours later to receive a bill from Waldecker for "services rendered." As Waldecker continues to advertise, Superman seeks to give him some good advice about the Superhero business. Waldecker isn't listening however, insisting that Superman go his way, and he'll go his. Perry assigns everyone at the planet to find out what they can about this new "Resplendent Man", which Waldecker is now calling himself. Clark is torn, because he knows exactly what happened, but doesn't want any one else to find out. "If people knew, they'd mob Superman. Everyone would want his powers," he tells his parents. When Lois asks Superman if he knows how Resplendent Man got his powers, he cagily answers that he was a surprised as anyone. As Clark, he does his best to sabotage Lois' investigation, but to no avail. Lois discovers Waldecker's real name and that he has a sister who is in a home for those "challenged by reality." Visiting Wanda Mae, Lois finds out that Resplendent Man got his powers from Superman. Lois is shocked that Superman lied -- or withheld some of the truth -- from her. "I wouldn't have expected that from you," she tells him. Superman asks her to think seriously about revealing what she has found out. Outside the Daily Planet, Superman again tries to lay down the law to Waldecker. Waldecker decides he's had enough, and socks Superman one on the jaw. A brawl ensues, which leaves both Resplendent Man and Superman exhausted, and the street in ruins. Jimmy has taken lots of photographs, and Clark Kent eventually writes up the story. In the meantime, Gretchen Kelley kidnapped Wanda Mae in an attempt to force Waldecker into her laboratory for tests. Lois, snooping around the cemetery, also gets captured. As Kelley works on transferring Waldecker's powers into a rat, Lois realizes just how dangerous this knowledge is. Waldecker, never Superhero material, can't see past the danger to his sister. Kelley succeeds in transferring the powers to the rat, who goes flying through the sewers. She then transfers the powers to herself, just as Superman drops in. Superman is stymied by her, being unable to hit a woman. Waldecker has no such compunctions, and punches Kelley across the room, where she damages the equipment keeping Lex alive. While she is stunned, Waldecker and Superman hustle her into the power transfer equipment, and transfer the power from both Waldecker and Kelley back into Superman. Kelley escapes as Superman is helping Lois and Wanda Mae escape from the booby trapped cell. Lois and Waldecker all decide to keep the secret about the possibility of transferring Superpowers, and Metropolis is back to normal -- except for the rumors of a flying Rat inhabiting the sewers. ***************************************************** Now for the review part..... 1. 39.95 -- A SMALL PRICE TO PAY…. Resplendent man is an interesting contrast to Superman. One of the most interesting points they make is that Resplendent Man is not an altruistic do-gooder, but is rather a dyed-in-the-wool Capitalist. And this capitalism brings up an interesting point … is it ethical to charge for the use of Superpowers? Superman clearly felt it was not. But let's look at it from Waldecker's point of view. When we first meet Waldecker he's at the end of his rope. Wanda Mae is his responsibility, and he's lost all the money he has. They'll be throwing her out of the rest home at the end of the month. In desperation, he's about to commit suicide. Maybe he figures she can use the insurance money. Superman stops him from killing himself, but doesn't offer any solution to his problems. Then, out of the blue, Waldecker finds himself with Superpowers. Clark Kent has a job, works as a reporter to pay the bills. Waldecker doesn't have a job, and has even bigger bills than Clark. I think many of us would look at what happened as a gift from the gods, the answer of a prayer. And it is to Waldecker's credit, I think, that he doesn't use his powers to go rob a bank, but instead tries to do good with them. He just charges for it. And he also makes his abilities more available. Will Superman rescue your cat from a tree? Only if he's flying overhead, and hears him mewing. Resplendent Man, however, has a 900 number to call. Need a Superhero? Just ask. And have your checkbook ready. And when you think about it, his charges were not unreasonable. Truly, $39.95 *is* a small price to pay for being plucked alive from the snapping jaws of certain death. He could have charged a lot more. As Waldecker said, "If saving a person's life isn't worth something, I don't know what is." So what do you all think? Is it ethical to charge for such services? If Clark Kent were unmasked -- if everyone knew he was Superman -- would Superman continue to work as a reporter? Or would he have to find another way to pay the mortgage. I suspect that a superman's career opportunities would be somewhat unlimited. 2. THE FIGHT SCENE One of the complaints often heard about BOTB is the fight between Resplendent Man and Superman, and I'll be the first to admit that it went on a bit too long. Plus, Superman should have moved it off to a location where property would not be damaged, instead of turning the street into a shambles. But Superman had been acting like a prig throughout the episode, and I, for one, thought it was about time someone shut him up. I was cheering when that first punch sent Superman flying across the street, smashing, appropriately enough, a bench with a "Call Resplendent Man" advertisement on it. >From the beginning, when Superman stopped Waldecker from committing suicide, he shows no real sympathy or empathy for the character. Distracted by his need to get back to Lois, he piously mouths every platitude and cliche he can think of. "Life is a precious gift" he says, when he doesn't even know what the problem was. "Metropolis General Hospital has a referral service, there are people who can show you that life is worth living." After Waldecker gets superpowers, Superman is still full of it. Good advice, that is. And from the beginning, Waldecker isn't buying. Superman may be a god, above the rest of us, but to Waldecker that doesn't mean everything he says is gospel. No, to Waldecker it just means that he has no idea of the problems inflicted on ordinary mortals, and can neither understand nor judge people living a "real life." "What would you know about it, Mr. Nothing-can-hurt-me; I-don't-need-money-to-live." Waldecker has no idea of the "Clark Kent" behind the costume. Clark goes home to Smallville, and tells his parents how this man has gotten Superpowers when he has no idea of the responsibility. Martha gives him some sage advice, "He's new at it. Maybe he'll learn." Clark doesn't give Waldecker a chance to learn, however, and instead chooses to act like a stern father lecturing a teenage son. With about as much effect. "I'd like to have a talk about right and wrong." "Well, OK, if you think you know that much more about it than I do." "I have tried to be patient; I have tried to be understanding. You will take this to heart. You will memorize it; you will *live* it. The strong do not exploit the weak; the powerful do not attack the defenseless, and you DO NOT use your x-ray to spy on women in locker rooms." "Oh, puh-lease! What planet are you from? Try to grasp this. It's not really a hard concept. You may not like what I do, but there's not a blessed thing you can do about it. "Don't you ever think of anyone besides yourself?" "I don't want to hear anymore of your carping and complaining." "Well, you are going to listen, until it sinks in. Your behavior is unacceptable…." POW! That's finally the last straw, as Waldecker knocks him across the street. And I for one, think it was one well-deserved punch. It's not until Waldecker is faced with a life and death crisis that he begins to realize what makes a Superman. He knows helping Kelley with her experiments is wrong; he knows if she gets superpowers it'll be a disaster, but he can't think of anything else to do, and he won't endanger his sister. Superman may be willing to face this kind of decision on a day-to-day basis, but Waldecker is not. Resplendent Man jumps onto the "Reverse Power-transfer" pad as soon as the opportunity presents itself. Being a Superhero is more than unlimited opportunities; it involves an incredible number of responsibilities and making life and death decisions as well. 3. FORESHADOWING OF THE REVELATION To me, the best scene in this episode is this one when Lois confronts Superman about lying to her. In their first encounter (the one that required the infamous "Cheese of the Month Club" excuse) she realizes that Superman is not answering her questions; that he is withholding something. Then after she interviews Wanda Mae, she finds out he was out and out deceitful. "He lied. I never thought he'd lie to me," she says to Clark. The first time I watched this, this was so ominious, a foreshadowing of Lois' reactions after discovering the Big Lie. What was Clark thinking as he saw this disappointed Lois, what kind of a sinking feeling did he have in his stomach, when he thought about revealing All? Now when I watch it, I can only think of opportunities missed, as Lois was just a little too understanding for me when she finally did discover the truth, in the beginning of the third season. And yet, perhaps, it was this smaller discovery about Superman that led her to be able to accept the larger deception with such aplomb. Up until now, she's been holding Superman up to a very high standard. Here she realizes that he's capable of compromising that standard for a greater good -- in this case, to keep superpowers from getting into the hands of the unworthy. (Little does she know, that Clark's greatest fear seemed to be getting mobbed by people wanting superpowers. Not *quite* as noble.) But she realizes, and accepts the fact -- that he will indulge in a bit of deception, and probably lie too, when he feels it is necessary. In the end she becomes his accomplice, keeping the true story out of the papers, and instead, publishing a deception. There were so many other intriguing things about this episode. The subtle details -- the Resplendent Man advertising on the bench Superman breaks during the fight; the National Whisper headline about the "flying rat", Clark whistling the LNC theme. The ridiculous -- from Resplendent Man's short stature (which just goes to prove that having Superpowers does not guarantee you a figure to die for) and "Brazilian daisies", to "Dermal Artistes" and the Cheese of the Month Club. To Dr. Kelley's attempt to seduce Waldecker, and Waldecker changing into Resplendent Man, and leaving his clothes on the sidewalk. And through it all, they managed to do what they do so well, poking fun at the Superman myth. Resplendent Man's cracks at the costume ("How do you carry money in this thing? I tried putting a pocket in the cape, but it's so much trouble -- you have to fumble for the zipper, and zip it open, and zip it closed. I thought about Velcro, but it would pucker the fabric and ruin the lining.), and in fact you can see his pocket in the flying scenes. And he even pulls a pocket dictionary out of his cape at one point. ================= This is a fanfiction list, so I thought I would mention a few fanfics that are based on this story. There are probably lots more, but these are the ones that occurred to me off the top of my head. Transferring powers is actually a common theme in the Superman comic book lore. What would this or that character be like if they actually had Superpowers. L&C did it at least four times, once in Bolt From The Blue, in Ultrawoman, and then, once again using the electricity trick, in Chip off the Old Clark. Finally, in I've Got You Under My Skin, they do the body-switching trick. As we were boning up for the Kerths, most of us probably just re-read Wendy Richard's "When Lightening Strikes Twice." If Luthor hadn't been so quick to kill Gretchen Kelly in "The Phoenix" what might she have done with the knowledge? In Wendy's story, Kelly manages to transfer the powers to Lex. Resplendent Man was just an ordinary man, not cut out of the superhero cloth. But Lex is most decidedly *not* an ordinary man, and he makes a very chilling supervillain. In between the second and third season, Leanne Shawler foresaw the Ultrawoman storyline with "Another Bolt From The Blue" (Available on her web page at ). A continuation of "And the Answer is..." (there were a lot of those written that summer ), it manages to give us a power-transfer as well as an answer to Clark's proposal. (Ultrawomen fans ought to pay attention to the costume-making scene in this fic. It's amazing that Leanne anticipated it that well.) Whatever happened to William Wallace Webster Waldecker? Debby Stark has a William W.W. Waldecker subplot in parts 7 and 8 of Dawning. I like her version of what he's turned into. If any of you newcomers haven't read Debby's Dawning yet, you must. Dawning 1 was the first fanfic of any kind I ever read. I got to the cliff-hanging end, and signed up for the fanfic list immediately. (You had to be a member of the fanfic list to access the archives in those days.) Dawning 2 did not disappoint, and I remember staying up *way* too late reading Dawning 9. The first half of Dawning (parts 1-12?) is available at the fanfic archives; the rest at Debby's site. I can think of two stories dealing with the idea of charging for Super-powered help. One is the story I co-wrote with Peabody, where the Kents are in danger of loosing the family farm, and Clark offers to help. This story, "Paradise Lost," is available at the archives, and also on the web at . The other story is Sandy McDermin's excellent Season Five story, "Charity begins at Home." In it, Superman becomes downright avaricious when he's exposed to Red Kryptonite. This is an excellent comedy, available only from the author. So write to Sandy and ask for it . And for those of you who read nfic, ask her for "Something's Missing" and "Love as a Blonde", too. (Although I should warn you, in Sandy's nfic, Lois and Clark are married, and you are going to get about 150 pages of action and adventure with only about 5 pages of bedroom activity.) Sandy has a real flair for comedy, and if you haven't read her stories, you are missing a real treat. These are just some stories that I thought of off the top of my head. I'm sure I missed a lot of similarly themed fanfics -- any one want to add to the list? -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Genevieve ========================================================================= Date: Fri, 23 Mar 2001 10:32:52 -0500 Reply-To: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: Carolyn Schnall Subject: Re: Cell Phones In-Reply-To: <35.12650771.27eade17@aol.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" ; format="flowed" Thanks for the information, Maureen:) Carolyn >Hi Carolyn and Chris, > >Dick Francis is one of my all-time favorite authors (and a charming person). >I loved the first two books about Sid Halley, Odds Against (1965) and Whip >Hand (1979). Hearing it every now and then made me wonder why neither Clark nor Lois had seen anything more to it than a friendly date, and now, here's this little piece of fluff as a result. ;) Of course, I wanted to post tonight, of all nights...just because , and thanks to my terrific beta-readers Wendy and LabRat, I could get it ready in time. :) Guys, your edits, suggestions and support have been immensely helpful, thanks so much! :) Feedback, public or private, is very welcome, as ever. :) - Sweet Surrender - Lois watched Perry almost run for the car where Alice was - apparently impatiently - waiting for him, and she couldn't help but laugh at her editor's eagerness, still shaking her head in bewilderment as she returned her attention to her partner. They slowly progressed through the crowd of reporters milling on the sidewalk, one by one leaving for the night, after accolades and congratulations to the winners, and offers of comfort to those who were coming back empty-handed. "So, how did I rate as a date?" she enquired as she linked her arm through Clark's and they walked down the convention centre's stairs. "Oh! *A* plus," was his enthusiastic answer. "I hung on your arm decoratively?" She leaned just a tad more heavily against him, joining action to her words and beaming up at him. He nodded wholeheartedly. "You did." "Fawned appropriately?" She giggled, the reminiscence of how much it would have bothered her to openly admit her admiration of him now such a faraway memory. "Absolutely." "And just faded into the background during your big moment?" Her voice dropped to a seductive whisper as she teased him, revelling in this moment of leisure with him, where they could simply loosen up and enjoy each other's company, off all work-related hooks. "You were *beautiful* yet invisible." "Hmmm...make me go through another night like that and I'll *rip* out your spleen," she threatened in a fit of laughter, ignoring the warmth that had bubbled through her at his compliment. "Okay, fair enough." Clark laughed with her, his relaxed demeanour reminding her of the one and only time when she'd seen him this comfortable, when they'd been hanging out at the Smallville Corn Festival the previous year. She released his arm to readjust the strap of her dress, feeling a small and unexpected sense of loss as she did so, but suddenly shy, feeling a little awkward about getting any nearer and close the distance between them. Clark held up his award in front of him, reclaiming her attention again as he attentively observed the modern design of the artistic piece of glass. "It's...smaller than I thought." "And not quite as shiny close up," she added, shrugging. "You know, you win a few of these, you find out they don't mean that much." Clark turned towards her, a surprised expression on his face upon hearing her words, probably unable to believe that she, of all people, was denigrating the value of an award she'd seemed to so dearly wish for only days earlier. "A quick rush, a few pats on the back, and then you're back on the beat, only as good as your next story," she clarified matter-of-factly. And it was the truth, actually. As much as it had always overwhelmed her to win that kind of recognition for the quality of her work, she always moved on pretty quickly to concentrate on her next assignment, throwing herself into it and never resting on her laurels. "Where do you think I should keep it?" "I'm the wrong person to ask," she replied with a grimace. "I keep mine at the bottom of a closet." She started to walk again without waiting for his reaction, smiling inwardly as she thought about her little white lie. Well, half-lie. She actually *did* keep them at the bottom of her bookshelf. She just...removed the books hiding them every now and then, turned on the lighting she'd set for them, and remembered the fond memories that went with her three awards whenever she needed a little boost to regain some confidence. Clark quickly caught up with her, and she reflexively linked her arm through his again, pressing her side against him and breathing in the soft evening breeze. The fading noise from the convention centre's crowd behind them was still buzzing in her ears, the reporters who'd attended the ceremony were being driven away in cabs or personal cars, and their laughter died in the gentle wind of this beautiful spring night. She felt incredibly well, just walking like that, with her partner and best friend, aware of his quiet strength at her side, wrapping her fingers around his jacket's sleeve, itching to slide them lower where his hand disappeared into the soft material, suddenly needing more direct contact with him. The realisation of her desire took her aback, and she vaguely debated whether she should be scared or thrilled by her unexpected thoughts, but the worry was soon forgotten as Clark let out a deep sigh of satisfaction and returned his attention to her after waving Perry goodbye. He shifted to look at her, a smile on his face, the bright lights of the convention centre's neon sign still dancing in his eyes, sparks of pure joy and unrestrained happiness radiating in those molten depths. Boy, did he look good in a tuxedo! When he'd picked her up earlier that evening, she hadn't been able to do anything but stare as she'd opened the door and come face to face with him. It had been fortunate that she'd found something else to focus on, in the shape of the beautiful bouquet of white roses that he'd brought to her in sign of their renewed, strengthened friendship, or she would still have her gaze fixed on him right now. Black suited him, that she already knew, but she didn't remember ever being that dazed by the view of him in such an outfit - although somewhere in the back of her mind a little voice was reminding her of the White Orchid Ball, where she'd had to resort to cynicism to keep herself safe from the impression he was making on her. She inwardly shook her head, wondering why on earth she'd been so defensive towards him in the first weeks of their partnership. But actually, the answer to that one was easy. Clark had made her change, and for the better. He'd shown her that the world wasn't a place populated with morons and untrustworthy, testosterone-driven males. He'd taught her to open herself up to others, and to trust again. He'd been the best friend she'd ever had, someone she could always rely on, someone who understood and respected her. And maybe a little more than that, a careful thought tiptoed into her mind, setting a sensation of warmth and security over her. She didn't feel threatened by Clark, neither as a friend, nor as...more. More? She briefly wondered where the thought had come from, but shook it from her mind before it had time to settle there. She felt simply content to be with him tonight and share this important moment of his professional life with him. She was still ashamed of her attitude towards him when she'd learned about his nomination, and was immensely grateful to him for being so incredibly understanding about it. He hadn't taken advantage of her apology to him to talk down to her; he'd forgiven her for her thoughtlessness in a way that still amazed her, and despite the fact that she hadn't participated in the ceremony per se this year, she'd very much enjoyed it. Her heart rate had increased when Clark's category had been up, as much as if she'd been the one whose story was nominated. And when his name had been announced as the winner, and he'd got up from his seat, visibly completely taken aback, she'd hugged him tight, feeling as happy as if it had been her who'd been awarded, and whispered her congratulations into his ear before planting a soft kiss on his cheek. She'd watched him navigate around the chairs and tables scattering the large room's floor, stumbling onto the stage and shaking the presenter's hand as the entire room applauded his prize, and she'd been very proud of him. But what had moved her the most had been the thanks he'd given. She'd felt the back of her knees weaken as she'd heard him dedicate the Kerth - his very first journalism award - to her, even telling the crowd of reporters gathered for the event that Lois Lane had taught him his job, and he'd never be thankful enough to her for that. Tears had prickled at the corners of her eyes upon hearing his words, especially when she'd seen his gaze search for her in the crowd before he'd given a final thank you and returned to their table. To her. At first, she'd tried to hide her emotions from him, but he'd gathered her in his arms again, and she'd melted in his embrace, laughing and crying at the same time, and above all, feeling extremely content and happy. Just like now. She leaned her head against his shoulder, and he wrapped his arm around her bare shoulders, pulling her closer. They exchanged a careful look, and she detected something in his gaze that he'd never let her see before. A certain self-assurance mingling with a silent question, to which she replied by lifting her arm to grab his hand and lace her fingers with his. No word was needed as they kept walking in comfortable silence, getting used to the new kind of closeness they were sliding into, without any awkwardness or apprehension from either of them. It just felt right to be close to Clark like that, to feel the warmth of his skin where it touched hers, with an awareness that threatened to overwhelm her. Their steps guided them through the deserted streets of the residential area where Lois lived, away from the noisy crowds of this warm Saturday night, enclosing them in a universe where nothing else mattered but each other, and this new sensation of intimacy, this new step in their friendship that both of them were aware of, but that neither of them wanted to openly acknowledge, for fear of breaking the spell. >From time to time, Lois would lift her head from where it was resting on Clark's shoulder, to take a look at her partner's face through the lights and shades provided by the clear, starlit sky above them, and he'd smile down at her, squeezing her hand in a reassuring gesture. And slowly, progressively, all of her previous insecurities lifted off, shrinking into old memories that she didn't wish to hang onto. Tonight, there was just Clark and her, and none of the hurt and deceit haunting her past could overpower her dawning feelings for him. She cared for him, she trusted him too much to raise the walls between them again. She bit her lip in a nervous gesture as they walked around the corner of the street where she lived, and approached the dimly lit stairs leading up to her apartment building. She felt Clark's hold on her hand tighten, and understood that they were coming to a turning point in their relationship. Tonight, after the closeness they'd reached during the ceremony, and moreover, during their silent but meaningful walk back home, their strong, solid friendship had seemed to slide into something more fragile and uncertain. And yet, it looked to her as if she'd been hiding herself from the truth of her relationship with Clark for months. If the Luthor fiasco was an episode of her life she'd rather forget, it had at least made her aware of how much her best friend meant to her, and if it hadn't been for Clark's retraction of his feelings for her, just when she'd been about to tell him she'd changed her mind about not being romantically attracted to him, then they could be living something wonderful right now. But wasn't that what was about to happen, right now? Her stomach tightened as much in anticipation as apprehension, as she finally considered the possible consequences, which she'd been ignoring until then. If it didn't work between them, she doubted their friendship would survive, and their professional partnership would simply die of natural death as a result. Tonight had been really special, for Clark as much as for her, if she went by the loving dimension that had snuck its way into his gestures towards her, but tomorrow? What if, in the cold light of the day, they discovered that they'd made a mistake, that what they'd thought was real was just a passing attraction, a little harmless fling of the moment? Except that to them, it *would* be harmful. It would destroy their entire relationship, raise a definitive barrier between them. Any of their gestures of intimate friendship would be interpreted and analysed as a consequence of what had happened, and neither of them would be able to live with that. There was too much at risk. Too much to lose. They halted at the bottom of the stairs, and Clark's hand slipped out of her grasp, his fingers brushing her nape, sending ripples of desire through her, and her stubbornness wavered. He had lowered his eyes, refusing to meet her gaze, probably waiting for her to take the first step. Or close the symbolic door between them and move on. He was giving her a choice, actually. Either she took the risk, in which case she knew there was no turning back, or she let her insecurities get the better of her, and let the morning's rain wash away any hint of further intimacy that could have existed between them throughout the evening. It was up to her. She wished that they could talk, that they wouldn't jump into anything without being completely sure of the outcome, that the decisions they took wouldn't be regretted as soon as they'd been taken. Under normal circumstances, she wouldn't hesitate at all to invite him in for coffee, and they would talk things out. Even in veiled terms, without broaching the actual topic of their relationship, they could probably sort out whatever problems could come out of it. Surely? Her confidence wobbled a little as she considered the other side of the coin. If she let him in, she'd find herself alone in her apartment, in the middle of the night, with a man she was suddenly very much attracted to. It was the tux, she reasoned as she tried to get a grip on the confusion prevailing in her mind. The power of the tux, as Perry had defined so well when he'd explained his wife's need to rip it off him as soon as they got home. Just that. Power of his tuxedo, nothing more to read in it. Uh uh. So the only thing she had to do was to ask him to take it off and - Her thoughts stopped short and she briefly closed her eyes to regain some control over her suddenly erratic breathing. The image that had floated in her mind was definitely *not* what she needed to keep a clear head about this. It was better for him to keep the pants, shirt and jacket. Much safer that way. "Well..." Clark's soft voice broke through her thoughts, making her lose the semblance of emotional balance she seemed to have regained. The hesitation on his face was enough to tell her that he'd very much perceived the change between them, and was waiting for her verdict. She wasn't surprised that he wasn't trying to push her into anything, considering how she'd turned him down the one and only time that he'd confessed his feelings to her. And even if he'd taken back his declaration of love, there had always been something about his attitude that bugged her, something that made her less than convinced that he hadn't meant what he'd told her before her engagement to Lex. Somehow, it was a reassurance to her to know that he still hadn't changed his mind, that he'd been consistent in his feelings if not in his words. At that time, she hadn't been ready to face what he had to tell her, and what it meant for their relationship; maybe he'd understood that and had retracted his declaration to save their friendship at a decisive moment, where everything in their lives had been turned upside down, and the only anchor they had was the stability of their relationship. But now? Now, Luthor wasn't a shadow between them any more, the Planet was back on its feet, and their friendship had grown stronger over the months that had followed her almost-wedding. Clark had been at her side all that time, never pressuring her into talking about it until she'd been ready to deal with it, bringing her the reassurance she needed, listening to her as she'd cried herself out in the cradle of his arms, holding her tight and stroking her back soothingly until she fell asleep, cuddled against him, and he could tuck her into bed. He'd let her crash at his place many nights, sleeping on the couch and giving her his bed, being at her side within a second when she woke up from a nightmare, panting and drenched in sweat; on the many occurrences it had happened, he'd held her close, murmuring calming words into her ear, and simply being there for her during those moments of her life when she'd needed him most. He shuffled his feet, visibly reluctant to say goodnight and leave now, and she took a deep breath, knowing that whatever happened between them, tonight or later, would never ruin anything between them. "Would you...would you like to come in? For a moment?" she asked timidly, feeling the back of her knees weaken as his head shot up and he looked directly into her eyes. He nodded slowly, almost automatically, and she turned away from him, walking up the steps to the front door, happy for the opportunity it offered her to compose herself, and certain of only one thing: she had no idea what she was getting herself into. ******************** Clark followed Lois through the corridors leading to her apartment, a growing apprehension increasing the tension that had been recoiling in his belly as they'd walked away from the convention centre, finding themselves isolated from the crowds, and now about to be alone, facing each other. Maybe accepting Lois's invitation hadn't been such a good idea. Maybe he could just find some excuse, murmur an apology, and go home. They were on an edge, right now. If he hadn't interpreted her asking him to be her date at the Kerths a few days ago as anything more than an evening of fun and celebration between two friends, the way her fingers had been entwined with his, the way she'd looked at him, the way she'd asked him to come in held the promise of a new dimension to their relationship. What he'd always longed for was at his feet, finally within reach, after all those months of hopelessness when he'd tried - and failed - to convince himself that there would ever be anything between Lois and himself. And now, they very well might be about to walk over that implicit line that they'd drawn in the sand ever since they'd known each other. But as they entered her apartment and he heard her tell him to make himself comfortable while she made some coffee, he knew he couldn't stay behind that threshold, that his dearest wish was about to happen, and despite the certain amount of nervousness that had appeared in their reactions to each other this evening, he didn't want to change his attitude. Any amount of awkwardness could emerge between them, now, if he behaved differently, and Lois could draw any conclusion out of it, which would be more likely to scare her than reassure her. So he followed her to the kitchen area, like he'd done on the many evenings they'd spent together at her place, working late on a story, outlining the plans of a stakeout, or even having a relaxing evening between friends. He couldn't get tired of watching her, secretly admiring the way her long, black dress clung to her body, showing off her slender waist and emphasising her delicate curves. Her hair were tied in a sophisticated way, their curls intertwined in a complicated pattern behind her head, and dark tendrils were brushing against her neck, making him want to reach out and run his finger on her silken skin, or better yet, graze his lips on the soft warmth of her nape, feel her shiver in response - "Here you are," Lois exclaimed as she thrust a mug of hot coffee between his hands. He blushed at the direction his thoughts had been taking him, but she seemed oblivious to his discomfort, or maybe she purposefully ignored it as she tidied various objects on her kitchen counter. "Thanks," he murmured, taking a careful sip at the scalding liquid, losing himself in his thoughts as he tried to find a way to ease the charged atmosphere between them. Lois was busying herself around the kitchen, her attention focused on anything but him, and he knew she was avoiding his gaze. Maybe she was already regretting the signs she'd given him tonight. Or maybe there hadn't been any sign and he'd been imagining them. No. He refused to believe that the looks they'd exchanged hadn't meant anything special to her, that the emotion he'd seen in her eyes as he'd hugged her, after having received his award, had been faked. She really cared for him, and on a deeper level than she had ever wanted to admit. And, he reminded himself with a sigh of satisfaction, *she* had practically asked him out before the nominations had been revealed. She'd talked about him as her *date* - her word, not his. At that time, he'd refused to read anything more in her offer than a strictly platonic, *friendly* evening out. But now, he wasn't so sure. Everything seemed to have changed between them during the course of one evening, and they were treading onto uncharted territory. However, the familiar surroundings of their friendship were still there to guide the careful steps they were taking towards the unknown, and he wanted to hang onto them as much as she probably did. "So, will you show me where you keep them?" he inquired, more to break through the tight silence between them than for the purpose of obtaining an answer. "Huh? What?" She looked completely taken aback by his question, and it was only when he nodded towards his Kerth, which he'd deposited on the coffee table earlier, that his query seemed to register, and she took on an embarrassed expression. "What's wrong, Lois, you forgot where you keep them?" he teased her gently, setting his mug on the table and leaning against the kitchen counter, crossing his arms and throwing her a challenging stare. She merely responded with a growl and waved in the general direction of bookshelf protected by a set of glass doors. "In there?" Clark asked, leaving his comfortable position and approaching the piece of furniture in question with a measured step. But just as he was about to reach for the door-handle, he was blocked in his progress by a slim, feminine body. Lois had slid herself in front of him, stopping him before he had time to get any further. "Ooooh, nonononono, Kent. I don't think so," she said, shaking her head in a forbidding manner. "Why, Lois, are you too modest to show them to me?" he smirked, placing his hands on either sides of the bookshelf, therefore effectively blocking any way out that she could have. "Don't even think about..." She trailed off, her smile disappearing off her face, and she swallowed hard. She hadn't realised how close to her he'd been standing, until she'd felt his soft breath caressing the skin of her face. The heat radiating from his body was overwhelming her, clouding her thoughts, fogging her brain, and she couldn't focus on anything but him. A few seconds of distraction, her rush to the closet to protect the little secret compartment where she carefully kept her awards, and there she was, her bare back pressed against the cold glass of the door, and Clark's body mere inches away. Yet she didn't feel threatened. There was nothing predatory in his gaze, nothing but her Clark, the best friend she'd known for over a year, and whom she trusted with her very life. Nothing more to it... ...except maybe the little spark that she caught in his darkened eyes as his laughing expression was replaced by a more serious one, probably because he, too, had noticed the inextricable position he'd put them in. They remained completely still for a few seconds, not even daring to breathe as each took in the situation, their eyes locked and unable to look away, until Clark heaved a sigh and slowly removed his arms from where they were leaning on the wooden structure of the shelf, freeing her from the half-embrace he'd been enclosing her in. But Lois caught his hands in hers on a sudden impulse, refusing to let him withdraw from her that easily. Something beyond her own understanding made her averse to going back to the undefined situation they'd reached tonight. "Clark," she whispered, her voice hoarse as she pronounced his name. "Lois, I - " But she didn't want to hear any of it. Whatever apology he would come up with would ease them back into the comfortable friendship they'd shared until then, and even if the prospect was a lot less scary than what she was about to throw them into, she was too tired of fighting her attraction to him to back off. Not now. Not tonight. Not ever. She didn't let him time to finish his second word, silencing him instead as she launched herself at him, devouring his lips in a hungry, desperate kiss, any insecurity she had left shattering and drifting away as she let herself be swept by the sensation of his mouth on his. And when he wrapped his arms around her, pulling her closer and deepening the encounter, she knew that she'd done the right choice. - The End - Kaethel@club-internet.fr ========================================================================= Date: Sun, 25 Mar 2001 03:09:34 +0100 Reply-To: LabRat Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: LabRat Organization: LabRat Subject: Re: Sweet Surrender (1/1) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Helene, as you already know, I adore this. Even though a fan from the start, I had not discovered fanfic and the internet group until late fourth season. It was around this time that Rhen was preparing to had the archive over the Kathy. I vaguely remember this passing because I was still such a newbie back then. However, to be a part of tonight's main even has really touched me in a way that's hard for me to describe. While I know deep down that you are not leaving fandom, Kathy, it does sadden me to see another era some to an end. Once again, my friend, congratulations and good luck in whatever life brings your way from here on out. You've earned a great deal of success and my respect for running the Archive as you have been these last few years. And to Labby, while it does seem that you have big shoes to fill, I have all the faith in the world that your little paws will live up to maintaining the Archive in the same professional manner that it has maintained since it's inception by Rhen so many years ago. With caring FoLCs like you and Kathy and your staff that you both had led and will lead, I have no doubt in my mind that this fandom will continue it's successful path for many years to come ... As many of you know, I have run the L&C Fanfic Archive for the last 3 1/2 years. It's been a wonderful experience for me, and I have enjoyed it immensely. I have seen the Archive grow from a few hundred stories to nearly 1500. I couldn't have done it without Lauren, our incredibly talented webmaster, nor my outstanding staff of General Editors. I thank them all sincerely. :) The time has come, however, for me to step down as Editor in Chief of the Archive. This was not a decision I made lightly, as the Archive has been as much a part of my life as I have been a part of FoLCdom. But tonight, I am announcing my retirement. Rest assured, however, that the Archive will continue to be in capable hands! You will still be able to find your favorite characters detailed in fanfic. Our very own LabRat will be taking over for me as EIC, and I know she will do a wonderful job. And I know you will give her the same headaches -- er, I mean, the same wonderful experiences! -- that you gave me. You won't be getting rid of me completely, though! I will still be the listmom on the fanfic listserv, and I will still be involved with the Archive, just not on a daily basis. Thanks for everything, everyone. It's been a wonderful experience. Every year, I always wonder "will this be the year people lose interest? Will we have only a few people show up?" But every year, I'm always stunned at the turnout and the enthusiasm. :) There is something so wonderful about getting that many fans together in one place, for an evening of fun and celebration. We had as many as 74 people in attendance tonight, which I believe is even more than last year. We also had 220 people cast votes -- again, about 20-25 more people than last year. Not bad for a show that's been off the air for a few years, huh? :) A big thank you goes out to Erin Klingler who is our overall Kerth coordinator. She does an amazing job with the project. I also want to thank Pam Jernigan for coordinating the ceremony -- it's a ton of work, but you wouldn't know it from how easy she makes it seem once we get started. :) And added thanks to Anne Ciotola and Chris Paterson for their help tonight with wavs and voicing -- this is always a team effort, and the team is wonderful to work with. :) Thanks again, everyone, for making this a great night. :) Kathy ========================================================================= Date: Sun, 25 Mar 2001 01:44:55 EST Reply-To: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: Annette Ciotola Subject: Re: Sweet Surrender (1/1) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Gotta get that fixed, Labby ;) In a message dated 3/24/01 9:09:22 PM Eastern Standard Time, labrat@BLUEYONDER.CO.UK writes: > Helene, as you already know, I adore this. Excuse the blatant plug - considering how old this story is, I figure anyone who wants to read it will have by now [g], but this was my take on it, way back when: Finally, she said curiously, "What *were* you going to say that morning?" Clark stirred from where he'd almost drowsed his way into sleep. He frowned. "What morning?" "You know, when I woke up in your apartment. Alan was still sleeping and you were there, just standing there, watching me - that was sweet - and you said I didn't ever have to bid for your attention. You said I was special. That I was the first woman who'd ever interviewed you and that made me special." She raised herself to look up at him, curiously. "But that wasn't what you were going to say, was it?" He smiled gently down at her, his eyes and his words colored by the memory of that morning. Of how beautiful she'd looked as he'd watched her sleep. "No. What I was going to say was that you were the first woman who'd ever made my heart race every time I saw you. Who made me feel good about my powers for the first time in my life. Who made me ache with longing. Tremble with desire.." His lips took a lingering trail across her jaw and cheek with each new addition to his list as his hand played against her hair. "The first woman I ever loved." Lois smiled, tipping her head to one side and rubbing lightly against the side of his jaw. "Wow, all that, huh?" she said, but there was a small catch in her voice that belied the flippancy of her words and she buried her face in his shoulder for a moment, with a quiet sigh. He nodded. "All that - and more." >From 'And Puppy Dog Tales...' by...well, me. ;) LabRat :) ========================================================================= Date: Sun, 25 Mar 2001 08:14:36 -0500 Reply-To: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: Wendy Richards Subject: Re: Fanfic Archive announcement -- the end of an era As someone who has... um, rather a lot of stories on the Archive, as well as being a GE, and has thus had a lot of contact with Kathy over the last three years or so, I'd like to add my thanks and praise for all that she's done. I was shocked when I heard that Kathy was standing down; she almost seemed like one of those institutions of society - or FoLCdom - which is so fixed that we can never imagine life without them. But she deserves some free time to spend with her family, and to *WRITE*!! Come on, Kathy, some of us are waiting for the sequel to the award-winning When Friends Become Lovers, to say nothing about the prequel to Winners! :) At the same time, I want to offer my very best wishes to LabRat in her new capacity as EIC. I know that she'll do a terrific job. Anyone who's used the indexes to the message boards will already have some idea of her organising skills. I'm looking forward to working with you, Rat, and you can be sure of my support, and that of all readers and writers and GEs, I'm sure, in any way it's needed. :) Wendy ------------ Wendy Richards wendy@kingsmeadowcr.freeserve.co.uk ========================================================================= Date: Sun, 25 Mar 2001 08:22:39 -0500 Reply-To: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: Wendy Richards Subject: Re: I'm Looking Through You Question On Sun, 25 Mar 2001 13:50:20 +0100, LabRat wrote: >>>He smiled gently down at her, his eyes and his words colored by the memory of that morning. Swear to God, This Time We're Not Kidding aired on October 6, 1996. Dates are from the Lois and Clark section of the Superman Homepage . The comic book wedding was released in October (same week the episode aired, in fact), but the date on the comic is December, 1996. I'm curious now -- was any date actually mentioned, in the comics or on the show? MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hi all! First, I have to thank everyone who helped make the Kerth Awards a success this year, from voters and award audience members , to coordinators, site masters, and don't forget the authors! :) Gosh, the list goes on and on. :) But one thing's for certain, we couldn't have had the successful year without all of you! So thank you!! But now that the Kerths are over and I'm still alive and have all my hair , I wanted to get back to my writing, and had a question for you. I'm currently working on yet another novel (non-LNC), and decided to challenge myself (I like to do that ) by doing something I don't usually do--write in first person. I debated a lot over this decision, so what I did was write the first scene (several pages) in two different styles (1st and 3rd person), and I was *amazed* at how differently the characters came across, and how it seemed to really bring the character's struggles to life. So I'd decided to stick with what seemed more powerful and write it in first person--UNTIL I had a panic attack the other night when someone told me that they *hated* reading 1st person. ACK! So, all you readers out there...what are your preferences? Was this just one person's opinion, or does everyone hate reading 1st person? I'd love to hear. :) Erin __________________ erink@ida.net Visit my LNC/Kerth Website: www.ida.net/users/davek ***** "It's not the years that count, it's the moments...right now, as they happen." __________________ ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2001 19:38:25 EST Reply-To: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: No Name Available Subject: Re: Readers' Preference: First or Third Person? I know not everyone does, but hey, not everyone loves science fiction, romance, action, etc. It's the whole "can't please everybody" thing. Christy Kubit's recent "Martha Chronicles" series was wonderful; and those stories (for the most part) were told in the 1st person. I think they're great. And "48 Hours Without a Superman" was told in 1st person, too, and it had me ROFL. I don't think it could have possibly had the same effect on me had Kathryn's story been told in the 3rd-person. (Those who've read it will know what I mean.) :) I have a friend who writes L&C fanfic, and I think she must have talked to the same person you did because somehow she has gotten the impression that people hate 1st persons. But she is excellent at writing them, especially from Lois's perspective. I can't imagine her stories being told from 3rd person because, in these cases, they wouldn't ring as true. I think the fear that people don't like them is one of the things that's keeping her from sharing her stories with a larger audience. :( Anyway, the moral of this email is, write whatever and however you want. You'll always have a captivated audience. :o) Mols ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2001 17:10:31 -0700 Reply-To: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: Debby Subject: Re: Bolt From the Blue - Episode Review and Fanfic Recs In-Reply-To: <3ABB59D1.98C29DBA@erols.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" At 09:12 AM 03/23/2001 -0500, Genevieve wrote: [massive snip of material that reminded me of the good old days...!] >This is a fanfiction list, so I thought I would mention a few fanfics >that are based on this story. The only author I can think of that writes in first person whose work I actually like is Mary Stewart. Normally, first person makes me cringe. There are authors whose work I like, who have switched to first person, and I couldn't read the result. I think it might be because as a reader, if a work of fiction is written in first person, my view of the action is limited to the point of view of the one character. I don't get as complete a picture in first person as I do if something is written in third person. Don't know if that helps or not. That's interesting to see you say that, Ann, because in my reading (which is quite extensive, reading's my favorite thing to do!), I find that well over 90% of the third person I read is third person limited, rather than third person omniscent. IOW, even if it's in third person, it's one person's POV. Some third person stories are only one POV throughout, and some switch between two or more, but in almost all the stories you see these days, it's one POV at a time. I know I write my own stories (which have never yet been first person just because I can't get comfortable writing that way!) from only one point of view at a time, and there'll be a scene change if there's going to be a POV change. Personally I dislike reading third person omniscent just because I get too much info - there's no wondering what's going on because it's all out there! But maybe that's just me. There is a danger, I think, as Becky says, of information overload with third person writing; I prefer stories that stick to a limited number of points of view. Disadvantages of first person: well, if you're reading a thriller, you can be pretty sure that the narrator will survive until the end of the tale. :) Advantages: you see the world through only one person's eyes; the mystery (if it's a mystery) unfolds naturally. Maybe it's a blinkered view of the world, but isn't that who we see it in real life? In answer to Erin's question, I would read both kinds of narrative quite happily. What turns me off is when first person narrative becomes too chatty and informal, but that is a completely different issue. :) Good luck with the story, Erin! Those mentioned here and also Hazel's wonderful A Certain POV, to mention just a few. I'd hate to have missed out on those just because of a personal prejudice. MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I think it's a style question, Erin ... with first person you are limiting yourself somewhat (you cannot have *any* scenes in which your narrator is not present) but it is a very intimate way to write, because "first person limited" is the way we all live our lives One of my favorite authors writes what she calls "tight third person" which is third person, but only from one character's head (including flawed perceptions of the world), so it's similar -- no POV switches to find out what the other person is thinking. This can make it tricky to figure out what the bad guys were doing when ... but maybe that won't be a problem in your story :) One reason I think people may not like first person is it really requires a sympathetic narrator. I'm not going to want to read much of a story where "I" the narrator am doing things that I the reader find repugnant. You've already got answers to both of your date questions, but I will add that we found out in SuperMann that the Pilot actually took place during May 1993, not September, as everyone had assumed until then. This was a major "ah ha!" moment because it made other timeline problems fall into place -- like why the Smallville Corn Festival was held in late autumn instead of during the summer. Now we know that GGGOH actually took place in July or August, which makes a lot more sense than November! :) Happy writing! :) Kathy ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 27 Mar 2001 14:00:07 -0500 Reply-To: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: Carolyn Schnall Subject: Re: NEW: Christmas Secrets In-Reply-To: <015501c06b7d$4010c9e0$23fcfea9@calvin.edu> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" ; format="flowed" Is late feedback better than no feedback? ACK! >> Erin, I would definitely stick with what you have. If you have considered both POVs and decided that 1st person best fit your story, you should definitely use it. Looking at a general readership (vs fanfic readers), I think the number of readers prefering1st person and those prefering 3rd are approximately equal. And, maybe it's just me, but I think the story has to be right for you as the writer before it can begin to be right for your readers. << Christy Kubit's recent "Martha Chronicles" series was wonderful; and those stories (for the most part) were told in the 1st person. >> Thanks, Mols I have to admit that I've been having some doubts and blocking lately, so it's nice to hear some encouragement :) The reason I excepted fanfic readers above is because I've gotten a surprising amount of feedback for Martha Chronicles saying, "Generally I hate first person, but I liked your story." I think some readers dislike reading Lois's or Clark's thoughts in 1st person. OTOH, it is much easier to write in 1st person if you create an original character (or, IMO, if you write as a secondary character, as I did with Martha). Also IMO, writing in 1st person is harder since you have to make sure you don't include any information that the narrator wouldn't know, which you could probably get away with including in even a close 3rd person POV. No matter how silly my questions were, you always gave me your undivided attention in answering them. I am glad that you will still be around and I hope that means you will be WRITING!!! Blessings to you, your family and the newest member that will be joining you soon. Labby, Congratulation to you, too. I have absolutely no doubts that the archive will flourish under your skilled leadership as it did with Kathy's. I mean, she's a great writer and does a great job with the Kerths and so on, but that certainly doesn't warrant special email treatment! Especially since the said treatment means she gets double posts from us! Erin said: >So, all you readers out there...what are your preferences? Was this just one >person's opinion, or does everyone hate reading 1st person? I'd love to hear. >:) I like those challenges too. I'm working on a Beauty and the Beast story right now that is entirely from one person's POV. I had no idea how hard it was going to be! I usually write from whatever POV is needed for that paragraph- getting into each character's head and seeing how they each view a set of circumstances from a different perspective. Limiting myself to a single POV has been challenging and rewarding. It works for this story, but it's not something I plan on adopting as my new style. I generally prefer 3rd person to 1st person, but like either when it is well written. The thing that annoys me to NO end ( I can't even read it!) is writing in the present tense. My two cents- if this story works best in a 1st person format, then do that. The characters always know best. Go for it! Jackie -- Jacalyn S. Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed Erin, Just wanted to add my two-cents -- Overall I tend to like third person stories better than first person. *However*, there are many first person stories that I have enjoyed immensely (Hazel's A Certain Point of View, just to name one). If the first person is stronger, I say go for it. Personally, I have a hard time writing in first person, but I have a friend who has a hard time writing in third -- and I love her writing style. So, take the plunge! Bethy (who wants to know if we're going to be allowed to read this novel of yours... I've found some Yahoo groups, but you cannot get it pure e-mail (you must go and post on the group site, but there aren't folders/threads like a message board), and the trend seems to be advertising websites -- "Come to my site, read my stuff and let me know" style. *And,* the trend seems to be *not* giving feedback.
