I'm desperately looking for the sound wav where Clark tells Lois that he
doesn't mind that she can't cook because she rates 5 stars in other areas of
the house. If someone has that wav from the ep Ghosts, please let me know!
If someone has the ep...please let me know!!!
Thanks,

Well, not to be argumentative, but I was reading some fic in another genre
(no rotten tomatoes, I do still love L&C the best) and several of the
authors
had links or requests for feedbacks at the bottom of their stories and I
found myself sending feedback right away, just because it was there to
remind
me.
Just a thought....

Actually, I thought Kathy had a very good point. It really isn't *that*
much effort to scroll back to the top of a story to copy and paste the
email address in order to send a note of feedback.
Providing a hyperlink is a more complex issue than it might seem. First of
all, that involves moving to HTML within story files; a couple of months
ago, the Archive ran a poll on whether readers preferred .txt or HTML,
and .txt won by about 2/3. Second, HTML files take up more space on the
server than .txt files, and the Archive already stores over 1400 stories -
heaven only knows how many MBs of space is used by the Archive and its
mirror site. Moving to HTML would considerably increase the space
requirement, and consequentially the financial costs to those who currently
bear the cost of running the Archive. And third, to include a HTML mail:to
link within every story uploaded would add more work onto some volunteer's
plate. I don't know how it would work: as a GE, I haven't the faintest idea
how to HTML. But even if the GEs or the authors (most of whom won't do it!)
provided the email details at the bottom of the story file, someone has
then got to HTML it for every story uploaded.
And all because it's a little too much trouble for readers to scroll back
to the top and copy the email address?
However, here's a suggestion: if it would be helpful and possibly generate
more feedback, WRITERS could themselves add their name and email address to
the end of their story file before submission. How's that?

If I may meekly refer you all back to my original post, I started by saying
that IF the archive ever reconsidered the html issue and decided to go for
it, a hyperlink with the author's addy might be added to the bottom. As for
the coding question: Quite frankly, Wendy, that hadn't occured to me. Will
the editors and archivists have to code everyone's story into html? Ugh,
what a nightmare! If we *do* ever make the switchover, it ought to be
strictly on a "submit your story in txt or already prepared html" basis. It
would be incredibly unfair to our already dedicated and hardworking
archivists to expect them to take on the additional job of doing the coding
for us!

"That" was *exactly* what I suggested: that the author add it on his or her
own, just as the author is now required to submit a story with certain
headings.

I have a feeling - and please, someone, correct me if I'm wrong, or
corroborate me if I'm right - that Wednesday's Child is a story someone (a
new writer) was posting to the fanfic Message Boards some months ago. I
couldn't tell you if it was ever finished.
*However*, Mel, take thee over to the handy Fanfic Message Board Index (URL

Thanks for the credit, Erin:) I should point out, however, that it was
Debby who was the creative innovator on this one. Well, actually, I think
Debby got the idea from another FoLC, but she's the one who recognized it's
genius and ran with it. Me, I just tried to keep up--I'm still catching my

Dang! You mean to tell me if I'd had the smarts to split that huge last
episode of "Only You" into two smaller parts, and submitted them
separately, I'd have qualified in this category?
Actually, come to think of it, I wouldn't have qualified even if I had
split the story. You can't be nominated twice for the same series, can
you? Since "Only You" was nominated in this category in the only year I
managed to get out two parts "quickly" (two in a year is *very* quick for
me) I figure that would have precluded me from a nomination, anyway.

Never have qualified for this one. I was already old and decrepit by the

I should shut up now and get reading, if I'm going to have any chance of
submitting any nominations.

Hey, it's not just the idea that makes a story Kerth worthy, it's the
execution! How many times have we read a story and thought, "oh, what a
wonderful idea; I just wish the author had done a better job of plotting/
chacterization/whatever." So I'd say both you *and* Debby deserve all the

Hmm, good question ... my feeling is that a series could be nominated again,
since the parts in question would be unique -- in other words, you'd be
judged on only the parts that came out in that year, not on the earlier
parts. But I guess it's something the Kerth committee would have to put our
heads together and figure out.

Subject: L&C Fanfic Archive -- fundraiser information
Hi everyone. :)
With the fantastic response the fundraising team for Annesplace has been
getting (yay!), several people have asked me when the Archive is going to
our
next fundraiser. As some of you might recall, our last fundraiser was in
Fall
1999.
Well, the wonderful news is that we raised enough money in our 1999
fundraiser to last us through the summer of 2001! We were originally
planning to do another fundraiser in 2000, but when we looked at the final
accounting, after all the bills were paid for the new domain name, new
server, etc, we found that we were still in really good shape. FoLCs are so
generous -- we didn't need a 2000 fundraiser!
Going forward, we are hoping to run our 2001 fundraiser this summer; I'm
tentatively planning a kick-off somewhere around June 2001, with money
collection to occur in July and August. As an added bonus, we're hoping
that
LAFF 2001, which will be held in early August, can act as an optional
collection point. Not only could US FoLCs donate while they are there, but
overseas FoLCs in attendance could save on mailing and exchange costs. :)
Thanks to everyone who has inquired about where to send money. Rest
assured,
you haven't missed a posting. But look for more info to follow this summer!
:)

(wow!); Wendy gets a very impressive 19 points; Pam (and Anne) got 17.5
points; Irene, Nan, and Bethy both get 16 points, Helene gets 15 points,
Nicole and Carol both get 11 points, Chiara gets 7 points, Marnie gets 6
points , and Yvonne gets a gallant 2.5 points. :)
Congratulations to our winning trio! Teamwork does pay off so nicely. :)
Some nice high scores this time, which only goes to reflect the popularity
of this type of story! Just wait until it's time to vote for only ONE at
the actual Kerths!
Many people suggested alt-stories instead of elseworlds. A brief reminder:
alt-stories either take place in the alt-world as shown on LnC (like M.L.
Thompson's "The Other Woman," which several people named, or Carol's
"Connections," which was also frequently chosen) or involve Lois and Clark
traveling to an alternate universe (like Tank's A Future Not Now from last
year). Elseworlds, on the other hand, have no pretensions of alternate
universes, but rather twist the "real" universe and put it on its ear, like
-- well, like all the stories in this quiz. :) Hope that's more clear!
One last reminder: Please don't forget that just because a story is on the
quiz, it doesn't mean it automatically deserves a nomination; and if a
story *isn't* on the quiz, it only means that it wasn't one of my ten
subjective stories. If your own favorite fits the category and wasn't in
the quiz, by all means, nominate it!
Over to you, Wendy...

Thanks very much to Hazel for a great Elseworld quiz - I have *no idea*
what I'm going to nominate in that category, much less vote for! Okay, so
we move on to the SuperFutures/Early Years category.
A couple of reminders before we begin...
RULES:
Identify each story and its author accurately to be awarded a correct
answer. This is an open-hard-drive and archive quiz, so feel free to check
your answers if you wish. These stories, as usual, are identifiable by
either a QUOTE or an EXTRACT. Please indicate whether you guessed the
answer from the quote or the extract. Two points for a full correct answer
from the quote, and one point from the extract.
DISCLAIMER:
Two =91disclaimers=92 here. First, just because, in my subjective decision-
making process, I have singled these stories out for the SuperFutures quiz,
that should not be taken in any way to suggest that other stories are not
deserving of nomination in this category. Your choice is every bit as good
as mine!
Second, just because, let=92s say, Story 6 and Story 8 are included here as
=
a
SuperFuture story, that does not preclude anyone nominating them in other
categories, such as Drama or Innovative Idea, and the same goes for the
other stories in this quiz. Multiple nominations of one story ARE
permitted!=
So, without further ado, here is the quiz; DON=92T FORGET THE SPOILER
SPACE!=
Quote 1:
"You aren't human!" Her voice was accusing.
Quote 2:
"Got it. You want me to hang back and keep my eyes on your backside."
Quote 3:
"Yes, I love him; I'll never stop loving him. But, as I think you're
finding out for yourself with Jack, sometimes love isn't enough."
Quote 4:
"I'm asking you to marry me, Jonathan Kent."
Quote 5:
Well diary, I'll leave you alone, at least until the next time I think I'm
looking through walls.
Quote 6:
"Normally, no you don't. But believe me, Clark, you were definitely
flirting, and with a female that wasn't me."
Quote 7:
"I can't let Jon get hurt - Superman, I need you to protect him for me,
please!"
Quote 8:
"Do you know," he said abruptly, "what you've done to my life, Lori Lyons?"
Quote 9:
'I'm spying on a blind man. How low can I go?'
Extract 1:
He gasped as he went flying through the air to the other side of the
street. That punch had hurt! It hadn't been enough to knock the wind out of
him, but the surprise was almost as overwhelming. He hadn't felt pain since
he was 12 years old.
"Don't pretend that hurt!" Sarah was approaching him, and Calvin struggled
to get to his feet.
"I know who you are and what you are!" She hissed the words, her face red
with anger. "You're a liar and a cheat!"
She punched at him again, but this time Calvin was prepared. He grabbed her
arms and was surprised at how strong she was. It was all he could do to
hold her still.
"Let's calm down and talk like decent human beings."
She pulled away from him, rubbing her wrists. "Neither one of us is a human
being, and you know it."
Extract 2:
Larissa fixed him with an icy stare. "Kevin, I know I asked for your help
today as I couldn't go shopping. I know I asked you to do something you
don't do on a regular basis. I trusted you. I even trusted you with my
measurements. What in the name of heaven made you think that this dress
would be suitable for me to wear tonight?" She surveyed her lanky
assistant from head to toe. "If you were wearing this outfit, and I just
might make you do that someday, where do you think you would conceal your
weapon?"
"Uh, sorry, boss. I never thought of that. You asked me to pick out
something nice, and I asked the saleslady for help, and ... I guess I
didn't think about guns. Uh, does this mean you're unarmed tonight?"
"No, Kevin, I'm not. Lucky for you I always pack my first aid kit. I've
never needed it before, but, well, Kevin, I guess today was the day to
inaugurate it. I've managed to tape my gun in a very unusual location
using a great deal of surgical tape that pulls every time I move. Of
course, when I stand still the tape doesn't pull, but the gun does pinch.
I'll be thinking of you, Kevin, every time I move tonight, and every time I
stand still tonight. I'm not what you would call pleased, Kevin. I'm
going to give you a word of advice. Keep this in mind. Kevin, next time,
your boss, whether it's me or some other REALLY cranky woman, asks you for
this kind of help, don't be tempted to make them dress like your own
personal Barbie doll. Okay?"
Jon congratulated himself on the magnificent amount of self-restraint he
was showing by not x-raying Larissa to locate her gun.
Extract 3:
It was getting harder and harder for him to maintain this distance and
continue provoking her as he heard the love and pleading in her voice, but
the vision of what the end would be like for her if he stayed was in his
mind, as well as the fear of a repeat of last night's episode. What if he
hurt her again? What if he didn't stop next time? And he was sure that as
his control slipped, there *would be* a next time.
"That's easy for you to say, Lois. It's not going to happen to you. I have
to go. Just let me say goodbye."
"Clark, please don't do this. I'm here for you and you should be here with
me so that we can stand against this together. We'll find a way; I know we
will."
"Goodbye, Lois. Tell the kids I love them." He paused. "I won't be coming
back. You should start thinking about making a life without me." He
disconnected and whispered, "I'll always love you." Then he turned and ran
for the boarding gate.
The sound of the click was like an explosion, but Lois couldn't accept what
she heard. "Clark?...Clark?!" She stared at the silent phone in
disbelief. "Oh, Clark, no! Please come home." And she sat staring at the
gray static of the visi-phone screen as the silence of the house pressed
around her.
Extract 4:
I wanted to know; I *needed* to know, but where would I look? Even if I
could get my mother to open up to me, it would be nearly impossible to get
her alone. Grandmother always seemed to be hovering around, not letting
Mother out of her sight long enough to swallow a pill or find a razor.
Grandmother even watched Mother take her pills every morning, making sure
she swallowed each, recounting the number in the vial every day. For
someone who thought my mother's overdose had been an accident, Grandmother
was being awfully careful.
More than wanting to know what was going on with my mother, though, I
dreaded knowing; I was afraid of knowing. The thing that most scared me was
that the thoughts that raced around her head, urging her to swallow pills
and fall asleep forever, were the same thoughts in my own mind, the
thoughts that kept me from making decisions about my life and sticking to
them.
The worst thing about my mother - the thing that most revulsed me about
her - was my likeness to her. I hated the years she had spent in limbo, not
living and not yet dead, existing somewhere in between, where no one else
could find her. The thing that scared me most about her lack of direction
in life, about her indecision, was my own indecision.
More than being afraid of losing her, I was afraid of becoming her, of
sinking into that same well of obedience and despair. I didn't want to be
stuck in a life of regret, of should'ves, a life spent hating my husband,
my children, my very self so much that I wanted out. She scared me because
I thought I could almost understand her.
Extract 5:
Jon followed Superman as he walked into the bathroom. He could hear the
faucet in the sink turning on and saw Superman running his head under it,
splashing water on his face. Lois was still hanging up the suit over in
the closet. As Superman reached for a towel, Lois shut the compartment and
made her way back to the bed, sitting on the edge in a sultry fashion.
Superman walked back toward her, his hair looked slightly disheveled. *And
oddly familiar* Jon thought. This was the first time that he was really
able to get a good look at the man's face. Yes, it was so familiar is was
disconcerting.
Superman caught a glimpse of Lois on the bed and smiled.
"Well, sweetheart," she said. *Sweetheart?!* "Maybe I can help you forget
about your night." Superman smiled even wider as he took Lois in his arms.
They began to kiss furiously as they lay out on the bed, Superman perched
over Lois. If this went on a whole lot longer, Jon figured, he would need
to go downstairs and get a bowl of popcorn. *Or, you could just mind your
own business!* Like that was going to happen. This was BIG.
"Mmmm, Lois," Superman practically moaned.
"Oh, Clark," she sighed and they kissed some more.
"OhmyGOD." Jon's voice was barely above a whisper, but as he said it,
Superman looked straight at him, through the wall, and went visibly pale.
Extract 6:
"Clark! Clark!" Hazel patted his cheek with just enough pressure to bring
him out of his faint. "Clark, you must wake up . . . fight it Clark . . .
you have to stay awake!"
The words were those familiarly spoken when he had been brought down by
kryptonite, but the voice was new. Had some other woman discovered his
secret? Clark prised opened his heavy eyelids and the mud-caked face that
leaned so close, regarding him so anxiously was one he knew. << Oh, no, not
Hazel Chen . . . she would probably blackmail him into having an affair in
exchange for keeping his secret.>> His eyes closed again and he tried to
shift away from her nearness, but the pain that smote him forced a groan
from his lips.
"No, Clark! Don't leave me! It's important that you stay conscious." His
pain-filled gaze returned to her face and she strove to keep him with
her. "You tripped coming down the slope and you fell heavily . . . ."
Yes, now he did remember . . . . Desperately he nodded his head and a
fresh wave of giddiness overtook him.
"Try not to move," the kind female voice instructed. "When you fell you
landed on a sharp piece of rock and it's embedded in your back. We can't
tell how much damage it's done but Roy's gone to fetch help and we should
have you on the Swallow very soon and Freddy can treat you. He's our
resident paramedic; we wooed him from your military so he's seen all sorts
of wounds . . . ."
"You have to . . . pull it out . . . ."
Extract 7:
The sirens were still a minute or two away. In that moment, Clark made his
decision.
"Bill, it's Clark. Clark Kent," he murmured in a low voice.
"Wha...?" The eyes were beginning to glaze over; the voice was slurred,
indistinct.
"I'm Clark. I... want you to know," Clark repeated.
The eyes focused on him again. "Clarrr... yeah, Claa...." A pause,
then, "Should ha'... guessed... always too close to Loisss...." Henderson's
hand clutched weakly at Clark's. Clark covered it with his own, and waited.
It wasn't long; just as the first police vehicle screeched to a halt by the
entrance to the alley, Henderson drew a shuddering sigh and his head
slipped to one side. Clark inhaled deeply and reached out with one shaking
hand to close his friend's eyes.
The two young police officers running into the alley were amazed at the
sight of Superman, crouched on the ground with his cape pooled about him,
holding the dead and bloody body of an old man in his arms, and the glimmer
of tears showing in his eyes.
Extract 8;
"All right?" he asked.
She gulped and nodded. "What do we do now?"
"Now, you find out something a little prematurely," he explained, dryly. "I
couldn't do it in there with the camera on us." He slipped one arm under
her knees, and the other around her back. "Ready?"
She nodded jerkily, and turned her head to examine his face, only half
visible in the gloom. Was it possible?
"Good. Put your arms around my neck and just relax. We'll be out of here in
a minute."
Lori obeyed wordlessly, and felt them lift effortlessly into the air. She
found herself holding her breath as Clark floated sideways several feet to
clear the elevator, and began a slow, gentle descent.
For a second, she closed her eyes, then opened them again to look at him.
He hadn't changed. He was looking back at her, his expression a little
concerned. "Lori, are you all right?"
She took a deep breath and tried to banish the detachment that seemed to
have gripped her as they drifted slowly downward. "Yeah." The word came out
as a squeak. She cleared her throat. "Yeah. I'm fine."
Extract 9:
Michael's jaw dropped. "Superman's like a dad to you, and I don't have any
pants on?"
"Uh huh."
"Oh, crap!"
"Exactly!"
Vicky quickly stripped his t-shirt off and put it on the bed beside him
before finding his socks and shoes for him. Then she turned her attention
to her own apparel - or lack, thereof - frustrated that in such close
quarters she couldn't use her superpowers to move faster. Michael would
feel a suspicious blast of air if she did.
Three things happened almost simultaneously. She did up her bra, Michael
zipped up his pants, and her father appeared with a great whoosh.
"Vicky, you're naked!" the shocked superhero exclaimed.
Have fun!

E6: Based on what I've heard on IRC, this would have to be Red Sky, by
Jenni :)
E7: Ah, got it ... So Strong a Foundation, by Wendy -- I'd forgotten
this one was eligible this year :)
Well, that's not too bad...

Oh! That must be one of the Martha Chronicles, by Christy Kubit. It's in my

Hmmmm... guessing, here. So Strong A fundation, by Wendy Richards? Another
one from my urgent 'to read' list.

That's from Nan Smith's 'Home' series... and here again I don't know which
one. :(

Christy Kenyon's The Martha Chronicles 3 - Metanoia.

Not sure.

Gale Force Winds by, um, me again. :D
Excerpt 5: Oh, I know I've read this one! And I know
I loved it! And I ... just don't remember who wrote
it. Sigh.
Extract 6: Ah, of course. Jenni Debbage's fantastic
Red Sky.
Extract 7: Oh, of course I know this one. It's by
the multi-talented Wendy Richards, and it's called So

So, how'd I do?

Lori means it has to be Nan's story. The title? No idea.
Extract 1:
Shayne's story. Calvin is L&C's wayward son, and no - I can't remember the
title.
Extract 6:
Jenni's story. Hey, I remember the title!!! Red Sky. I think.
Extract 7:
You again,Wendy. Darn, I know this scene so well, but I can't remember
which fic, other than Clark is older and he's feeling a bit down because a
few people close to him have recently passed away.

Easy! Shayne's wonderful Hearts and Diamonds. Hey, good start...
Quote 2:
"Got it. You want me to hang back and keep my eyes on your backside."
Ummm....nope.
Quote 3:
"Yes, I love him; I'll never stop loving him. But, as I think you're
finding out for yourself with Jack, sometimes love isn't enough."
Jude's The Circle Game. Definitely helps if you GE'd or beta read the
entries.
Quote 4:
"I'm asking you to marry me, Jonathan Kent."
Christy's Martha Chronicles. Now, which one? Not 1...too early for a
proposal. Not 2 I don't think (didn' I GE that too?) - okay, I'll take a
wild stab in the dark and say no. 3.
Quote 5:
Well diary, I'll leave you alone, at least until the next time I think I'm
looking through walls.
Cindy Leuch's Dawn of Discovery. Brilliant series.
Quote 6:
"Normally, no you don't. But believe me, Clark, you were definitely
flirting, and with a female that wasn't me."
Nope
Quote 7:
"I can't let Jon get hurt - Superman, I need you to protect him for me,
please!"
Not ringing any bells.
Quote 8:
"Do you know," he said abruptly, "what you've done to my life, Lori Lyons?"
Nope
Quote 9:
'I'm spying on a blind man. How low can I go?'
Nope. These were obviously GE'd by someone else then. ;)
E2:
Still no idea. But I want to read this one. If only for that last line. LOL.
E6:
"Clark! Clark!" Hazel patted his cheek with just enough pressure to bring
him out of his faint. "Clark, you must wake up . . . fight it Clark . . .
you have to stay awake!"
Aha! Jenni's Red Sky. One I haven't read yet, but I recognise the villain
from irc. Is that cheating?
E7:
Ah. Wendy's So Strong A Foundation. I GE'd this one too. Is that what
you call an unfair advantage?
Okay...that wasn't too much of an ordeal. I think. :)

Kath,
Unfortunately, this was one of the sites lost to the increase demands of
Yahoo. They forced all those under the Simplenet contract (who they bought
out sometime last year) to "upgrade" to a higher priced package.
Andrea does, however, have CDs available through which she hopes to
distribute the content of the web site through. She has information posted
on
how you can order them (for costs) at:
http://hometown.aol.com/DaniPayson/web.htm
Also, some of her music videos are still available through the internet at
Zoom's site and all of them are available at annesplace.net.
Hope this helps some

Just a note from the committee ... while most of the stories in this
category are SuperFutures, it does include Early Years stories, as well
(as one of the quiz selections illustrates :)
On the surface, these two types of stories don't seem to have much in
common. We combine them because there aren't enough Early Years stories
to merit a separate category, and we wanted to have a place for them.
But I think they *do* share something important: Getting readers
interested and invested in "new" characters is a challenge, whether the
"new" people are Martha as a young woman, or L&C's various offspring --
or even older versions of our heros. So when writers succeed, this is
where we reward them :)

I mentioned this a while ago, but I thought I would mention it again. A
while back I made a few audio tapes that were LnC related. The first tape
was a tape full of LnC sounds combined with songs that never made it onto

that reminded me of LNC. If anyone is interested in purchasing a some

As I recall, Clark's ship was found on May 17th, 1966 ... but his
birthday is celebrated February 28th. I think the idea was that the
Kents guessed his age at almost 3 months and back-dated his supposed
birthdate accordingly. At least that's how I remember it... ;)

Hmmm ... I'm kind of puzzled about why it's more difficult to scroll back to
the top of a story when the story is long than when it is short. On a PC,
if you hold down the key and press , you are back to the top of
the story regardless of its length. Since this takes only a split second,
why all the fuss with HTML and adding the e-mail addy at the end of the
story? Or do most people on the list use a MAC or some other system?
Puzzled,
Simba

quite a few older PCs which don't include such a thing as a HOME button. Or

Actually, my folks have a Packard Bell computer that they bought two and a
half years ago, so even if it's not *very* recent, it's still a pretty good
PC, and the keyboard doesn't have a HOME key. I noticed this because I
always use my laptop and the HOME key has become essential to me . But
some keyboards don't have it, even if the computer is not very old and is
good quality.

Apparently you'd be surprised, Laurie. I certainly was. But it reminded
me of the odd affection I still retain for my old Amstrad WP. That was an
eccentric bundle of wires if ever there was one. It had the endearing habit
of not telling you when a disk was full until you tried to save the last 10
pages of story you'd just spent the afternoon writing. And then, although it
pretended you had two options, one of which would save the text, in reality
it never worked and the only option was to switch off the computer, losing
everything in the process.
It's other nice trick was to not only have no HOME or END button but to have
no actual means of getting through a document at all, other than scrolling
down manually. Quite often - especially if I was working on a long fic - by
the time I spent twenty minutes or more scrolling down to where I needed to
start, I'd lost the inclination to do anything with it once I got there.
Surprisingly enough though, as I say, I remember that infuriating little
beast with a great deal of nostalgia. Wouldn't use it for the world though
these days, even if you paid me! ;)

Hey, guys! I'm just attempting ("attempt" being the operative word here :p)
to start another story (Oh, help me! Why do I do this to myself??). Anyway,
I was wondering. At the beginning of. . .oh, it was either "Barbarians at
the Planet" or "House of Luthor", I think. . .when Clark was betting Lois
she couldn't name all Santa's reindeer, does anyone know if this was spurred
on by the time of year? Was it just before or after Christmas? (Of course,
I can just *make* it the right time of year, but it would be nice if I was
backed up by the show. :))
Thanks for any help! :)

I don't think it had anything to do with the time of year, because those
episodes were in the spring. I believe that it was a sort of game they were
playing, because he also bet her she couldn't name all seven of Snow White's
Dwarves.

Disks? Oh no, it had tapes that looked like audio tapes and a magnificent

excruciating agony of waiting for it to process something! Its keyboard,
such as it was, had no need for a home key because. like Miz Rat's WP, all

Sorry Randi, but neither Barbarians at the Planet nor House of Luthor takes
place at Christmas time-- at the time they were shown (final 2 eps of Season
1), or apparently in the context of the story since the characters seem to
be comfortable the street without warm coats and Lois is seen driving a
convertible with the top down. :) Jude

I have read that Clark's birthday is actually supposed to be on 29 February
- there are quite a few sites about Leap Year that claim him as a Leap Year
baby....

Thanks for all the responses to this one. There were eighteen entries in
total, and even allowing for the fact that I bullied some poor victims on
IRC into entering, this is very encouraging. It's nice to know that FoLCs
enjoy the quizzes!
And not only were there 18 entries, but several people actually got all the
answers correct; one person even guessed them all from the quotes (well
done, Nan!), which is excellent. I wasn't especially aware of choosing
quotes which made it easy to guess the stories in question, so I'm
extremely impressed.
Before I give the answers and scores, as usual I'd like to make a couple of
things very clear, on behalf of the Kerth Quiz-setters. Please don't forget
that just because I've included a story in this quiz, it does NOT imply
that the story automatically deserves to be nominated; and if a story fits
the category but ISN'T on the quiz, it only means that it wasn't one of the
stories I chose, by admittedly subjective means. In this quiz, I was also
very aware of the fact that three authors, between them, could have filled
this category at least twice over: Irene, Nan and Cindy; and so I made
choices between their stories as well. If your own favorite fits the
category and wasn't in the quiz, please nominate it!
Okay, on we go: here are the ANSWERS:
1 - Hearts and Diamonds, by Shayne Terry
2 - Solar Eclipse, by Irene Dutchak
3 - The Circle Game, by Jude
4 - The Martha Chronicles 3: Metanoia, by Christy Kubit
5 - Dawn of Discovery, by Cindy Leuch
6 - Red Sky, by Jenni Debbage
7 - So Strong a Foundation, by Wendy Richards
8 - Home II: Beginnings, by Nan Smith
9 - Gale Force Winds, by Irene Dutchak
Where a story is part of a series and the entry guessed the series but not
the particular story, I awarded half of the points which would have been
awarded for guessing the story. So anyone who guessed The Martha Chronicles
for #4, but not Part 3 or Metanoia, got .5 of a point for the story if
guessed from the quote.
Scores:
Chiara: 5 points
Hazel: 15 points
Pam: 14 points
Helene: 8.5 points
Tim: 8 points
Irene: 14 points
Yvonne: 3 points
Shayne: 9 points
LabRat: 10
Adam: 11 points
Maureen: 10 points
Tara: 9 points. (Said Home I, but gave the subtitle as =91Beginnings=92, so
I=92ll accept it)
Nicky: 8 points
Clarissa: 14 points
Cindy: 11 points
Bethy: 15 points
Dia: a very strong 17 points, which earns her second place, and...
The winner is...
Nan gets 18 points - maximum score! Wow! This is definitely her category!
Thanks again, everyone! The next quiz is SuperFutures, and it'll be posted
tomorrow, or possibly later tonight if I get asked nicely enough! :)

category for 2001, and there are LOTS of really great stories eligible for
this category.
That quiz will be posted... soon. Sooner, if I get nagged!

All right; having been nagged on IRC, here's the next quiz. This is the
TEARJERKER category, a new one for this year. Stories in this category are
usually strongly B-plot driven, and - as the name suggests - tend to
require a high Kleenex count. They usually contain angst and emotional
WHAMs.
I'll admit that this is one of my favourite categories, and some of the
stories I've chosen here are among my personal favourites for the year.
So here we go...
RULES:
Identify each story and its author accurately to be awarded a correct
answer. This is an open-hard-drive and archive quiz, so feel free to check
your answers if you wish. These stories, as usual, are identifiable by
either a QUOTE or an EXTRACT. Please indicate whether you guessed the
answer from the quote or the extract. Two points for a full correct answer
from the quote, and one point from the extract.
DISCLAIMER:
Two =91disclaimers=92 here. First, just because, in my subjective decision-
making process, I have singled these stories out for the Tearjerker quiz,
that should not be taken in any way to suggest that other stories are not
deserving of nomination in this category. Your choice is every bit as good
as mine!
Second, just because, let=92s say, Story 1 and Story 10 are included here
as=
Tearjerker stories, that does not preclude anyone nominating them in other
categories, such as Alt or Episode Adaptation, and the same goes for the
other stories in this quiz. Multiple nominations of one story ARE
permitted!=
Oh, and PLEASE do not quote the entire quiz in your response! And don=92t
forget the SPOILER SPACE. :)

Mirages weren't supposed to have a heartbeat!

"Do you mind if I wreck the Jeep?"
Quote 9:
"You may not believe this, Lois, but every year I'm allowed to grant some
deserving
person one wish." His smile was warm and comforting. "This year I have
chosen you."
Quote 10:
I was going to say," she looked up at him miserably and then finished on a
whisper, "It's not...the end of the world."
Quote 11:
"I guess I came back right in time, huh? Lois Lane, I'd like you to
reacquaint yourself with your bodyguard, Clark Kent."
Extract 1:
This time she was the one pulling away reluctantly, anxious to prevent him
running out of breath again. Was this true emotion? Was he showing her his
true feelings for her, or was it just that he needed solace and comfort,
and she was conveniently nearby? Had he forgotten already what Lex had
revealed about her sordid past, or was he choosing not to believe it, as
he'd implied she should do? With anyone else, she might have been happy to
pretend that his feelings for her were as strong as hers undoubtedly were
for him, but with Clark somehow it mattered. Suddenly, she knew that she
cared for him too much for this to simply be a shallow fling, even if they
only had a few hours left together.
Before she could form a question for him, he was back again, a hand moving
gently through her hair while he rained kisses over her face, filling her
senses with his undisguised passion for her, until the hand in her hair was
trembling and he was gasping for breath. She reached up and stilled him,
pushing him softly back against the wall.
"Shhh. You need to rest." She leaned across and kissed his face, feeling
his hot breath against her skin. "Is this real, Clark?"
"What...what do you mean?"
"Are we just two lonely people trapped in a condemned building together, or
is it more than that?"
Extract 2:
The thought of the next forty years or more without Clark was unbearable.
"Why you and not me?" she sobbed aloud, tears still streaming from her
eyes and falling on the raised earth. She'd always thought she would go
first; ever since Bernie Klein had told her about Clark's slow metabolic
rate and she'd realised that his life expectancy was possibly twice hers,
she'd imagined him being left alone, some forty or fifty years hence. And
she'd ached for him then; but at least they would have had a long life
together. But he'd been taken from her after only four months of marriage.
Four precious months.
The four most wonderful months of her life.
Extract 3:
Once Clark was out of sight Lois made her way as close to the memorial
stone as she could. She sat down, cross-legged, on the soft grass at the
edge of the pond and stared at the stone, her hands clasped tightly
together. She didn't move or say anything for a few minutes, she just
stared. After a couple of deep breaths she addressed the marker.
"You knew this would happen, didn't you, Lois? You knew that I wouldn't be
able to resist, and that I'd fall under his spell." She took another deep
breath. "You knew that I'd find him the sweetest, most caring individual
I'd ever met, that even with the horror of what he's had to endure, his
nobility and desire to help people would still shine through. You knew
that...I'd fall in love with him."
Lois plucked some grass from in front of her and rolled it between her
fingers. "I'm sorry I haven't been able to be the friend to him that I
promised you I'd be, or that he has needed during this time. I guess my
being a Lois Lane is just too painful for him to be around. He's gotten
better, and more accepting of me as me, but when I remember the haunted
looks on his face every time he saw me those first few weeks, I'm amazed he
was ever able to stand to be around me. I want to be around him, be there
for him in whatever capacity he needs if he'll let me, and if that is only
as a friend, so be it. I will accept that. I owe him, and you, so much."
Extract 4:
His smile faded as his mind snapped back to the present. He felt the tears
stinging his eyes as he realized, for the first time, sitting there
watching a stream of mourners file past Lois's coffin, that there would be
no more moments like that. No more jokes shared over coffee, no more
arguments about a story, no more of her tangents. He would never hear her
babbling again. The thought of never hearing Lois's sweet voice again was
more than he could bear; he closed his eyes and just let the tears fall.
He didn't care who saw him. He just let his mind go blank and the grief
overtake him.
He didn't hear any of the minister's words of comfort, or the rest of the
service.
A while later he felt Perry's arm go around his shoulder. "C'mon, Clark.
I'll drive you home, son."
He let himself be led out of the church. As he passed Lois's coffin, he
gazed down at her one last time, and leaned over to place one final kiss on
her lips. Straightening, he lovingly placed a rose under the hands folded
over her breast, and whispered, "Goodbye, Lois." Then quietly, so no one
could hear, he murmured, "I love you."
Extract 5:
Lois finally fit the key in the lock and heard it click just as a strong
pair of arms wrapped around her from behind, surrounding her with a long,
warm coat and holding her tightly in their embrace. She hadn't realized
she'd been shivering until she felt the warmth encircle her body and she
finally began to cry, losing her tears to the torrent of rain which washed
over her face and hair, soaking both herself and the man behind her.
"Lois ..." Clark called softly, bending toward her ear so that she would
hear him over the rain that continued to fall. He turned her around and
pulled the long coat shut in front. He wrapped his arms around her and
hugged her close. The rain began to fall harder, causing rivulets of water
to run down from their hair and into their faces.
Lois pulled back and looked into his face. She could see how worried he
was. Oh, God, she didn't want that. She didn't want to hurt him. She
looked at him in desperation.
"Lois, I won't let you leave this way. You're so upset. What's wrong?
Tell me, please; let me help you."
At his pleading, she started to cry harder. She let him hold her, but
could only shake her head, knowing that once she started to talk, she
wouldn't be able to stop.
"Come back inside. Please? Please?"
Extract 6:
She looked up at him. His beautiful Lois, watching him with sad, dark
eyes. "I can't believe I have to say goodbye to you again," she whispered.
He shook his head and tried to smile. "I can't believe I have to leave
again. This visit's been like a dream."
"Dreams end."
"Yes. They do."
She took a deep breath and nodded. "Take care of my boy."
"I will."
"And take care of yourself, too." Her voice wobbled dangerously.
He nodded. "I talked to Tom."
"About...?"
"He said that since I was leaving, I could do this." He bent and kissed
her, slowly, tenderly, with all the feeling his heart had for her. When he
stepped back, there were tears in her eyes. "Never forget I love you."
The tears spilled. "I won't. I love you, too."
Extract 7:
"Oh come on, Lois, what did you care?!" he exploded. "What did it matter to
you to know where I was or how I was coping with my life without you? I
know you've always enjoyed having me under your control back at the Planet
but that time is over! It's been over ever since you told me you were
marrying *him*, and nothing can change that."
Lois stared at him, appalled at the twinge every one of his words created
in her heart. The man in front of her was completely different from the one
she'd always known. His entire being was speaking of suffering and pent-up
distress, the anger of his outburst the only way for him to deal with his
grief. He was offering her the image of a man deeply hurting.
The image became slightly fuzzy as she felt the hot moistness of her tears
on her cheeks, and the man in front of her quit his harsh stance all at
once, his acrimony replaced by a confused expression before she felt him
tentatively pull her into the circle of his arms. His embrace was shy in
the beginning, as if he was afraid she'd push him away, but she relaxed
against him, burying her head in his shoulder and bringing him closer to
her, her sobs muffled in his neck.
Clark was murmuring soothing words in her hair, restlessly caressing her
back, marvelling at the feel of her body pressed so close to his. It felt
so good to hug her, it had been so long. But the wetness on his t-shirt was
a painful reminder that he'd made her cry, and he held her tighter to
himself, slowly rocking their clasped bodies in a gentle movement,
whispering how sorry he was and how much he wished he could undo the hurt
he was responsible for.
Extract 8:
"I... can't do this," he whispered suddenly, his body slumping.
Beloved hands were gripping him suddenly; Lois's scent was beside him, his
father's strong arm was about his shoulder, and Martha held his lower arm
firmly. "You can do it, son," Jonathan assured him in a firm but shaky
voice. "You know you can - you have the strength and the courage, it's
there, inside you."
"Clark... I want you to stay, but you have to go," Lois told him. He turned
to face her, and the pain and grief in her face made him want once again to
sweep her up in his arms and fly her away to somewhere where they would be
safe. But he looked again, and he saw the strength of her resolve. She
didn't want to let him go, but she would do it because it was the right
thing to do.
It was the right thing to do... and he was going to do it. Slowly, he
straightened, and his hand reached for the door again.
"Goodbye. I love you," he said, his voice firm but low. Slipping through
the opening, he pulled the door closed behind him.
Extract 9:
"Clark?... Clark!" All weakness left her frail body as she tossed aside
the covers, leapt out of her bed, and launched herself into her long-lost
lover's arms.
Lois felt Clark embrace her with all the fierceness of desire that a man
could feel for a woman. Their lips met in a kiss that seemed to last a
lifetime. Clark carried Lois back over to the bed and slid in next to
her. Lois literally tore the shirt from his back as her hands explored the
magnificent stomach and chest that she thought she'd never feel again. He
planted kisses all along her neck and throat, until he captured her lips in
his again. There would be no need for any words to be spoken. All
thoughts of dreams fled as their minds and bodies became one in a fire of
passion that had been silent for too long. Lois knew that her one wish had
been answered and nothing else in the world mattered.
******************
The day after Christmas was always a tough working day. It was hard to get
people to focus back on their jobs, whether it be due to too much partying
or just too much holiday, it was always tough. This one was especially
tough for Perry White. He stepped out of his office and looked out over
the newsroom as his staff moved in slow motion about their tasks.
"People," his stentorian bellow brought everyone to attention. Many of
the folks were shocked at the visage their editor and chief presented. He
looked tired, and older somehow. There were deep lines edged around his
mouth and eyes, and his pallor was almost gray. "If I may have your
attention for a moment." He stopped long enough to sigh and wipe
haphazardly at his eye. "Yesterday morning, Christmas day, at 4:37 a.m.,
Daily Planet Pulitzer prize winning reporter Lois Lane passed away." He
allowed a few moments for the stunned murmurs to run through the
audience. "She was a dear friend to some of us, a valued colleague to
others, and a trusted voice to this city. She will be missed by all."
Extract 10:
"Clark, I know why I said..." she stopped, gave him a troubled glance,
looked away, "but I didn't mean we should...that is...I mean it's not that
I don't...*want* to...I just...we shouldn't...we don't *have* to...I just
need -- " She closed her eyes, took a deep, re-orientating breath, and
then turned to him.
"It's just that...I'm so *cold*, Clark," she whispered. "Worse than cold.
It's...it's like...like the cold's in here, you know?" She pushed a fist
into the valley between her breasts. "Like there's a ball of ice trapped in
my chest. I just..." She stopped again, her words clogging in her throat,
suddenly hard to push through what seemed like a crush of rocks blocking
her windpipe. "Will you just hold me?" she said in a small voice, looking
down at her lap and away from him, ashamed of the weakness that would have
her ask him for the comfort. "Please?
"Lois..." Clark looked at her helplessly. His reaction was instinctive.
Afterwards, he was never sure which of them had moved first, he to pull her
to him, she to let herself be drawn into his arms, but whichever of them it
was the result was the same. He reached out for her and she came willingly
into the shelter of his embrace as he tugged her close. She buried her face
in the strong harbor of his shoulder. Clark wasn't sure, but he thought she
was weeping, soundlessly, hopelessly. Certainly, she was trembling like
something wild and hunted.
"Lois," he whispered, spreading one large hand against her hair. "Oh,
Lois...honey..."
Extract 11:
Lois knew that she'd been drifting in and out of sleep the whole time he
was in her bedroom. Her defenses had been down, and so when he'd leaned
down and kissed her forehead in a loving gesture, she'd immediately
responded. "Love you," she'd whispered to him.
Lois remembered then how she'd woken immediately, embarrassed by her
declaration. He'd probably thought she was the most two-faced person he'd
ever met. One minute, she was yelling at him about how much he'd hurt her,
then the next minute, she was whispering sweet nothings in his ear. What
kind of games was she playing with him?
After her little slip, of course, she had pretended that she was still
sound asleep, half hoping that he hadn't noticed. Apparently he had,
however, because just seconds later, she heard him say, "I love you, too,
Lois, so very much." Her heart had swelled with her love for him then, and
she had been touched by the emotional tone in his voice. It had been hard
to keep her tears beneath her eyelids until he was safely out the door of
her apartment.
Her last thought before she had fallen asleep that night was that she was
going to work things out with him. The truth was that no matter what the
hurt she had suffered because of him, he had suffered as well, albeit in
different ways. The most important thing was that they loved each other;
of that she had no doubt. And, as a couple, whatever happened to one of
them, happened to the other. If she was hurting, then so was he. They
were no longer individuals, but two halves of a whole that had finally
found the way they fit together. She'd wondered why she had never seen it
before.
Have fun! :)
