MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hi, FoLCs! The website is finally up! The URL is http://cgi.sfu.ca/~mhancock/ . To those of you who've sent me e-mails with ratings, I (and my group) thank you. I've entered your ratings into the database already and so you are registered users. You should have received an e-mail from me with your user id. (I hope I didn't miss anybody out with all the e-mails going back and forth.) If I left anybody out, my apologies and please e-mail me to get your user id. If I've spelled anybody's name wrong or you want a different user id, please e-mail me. To writers, you might want to rate your own stories anyway, just so the program knows you have read them already. Otherwise, your own stories may keep coming up on the recommended list if they match your preferences. (And if they keep coming up on the list and you were going to rate them 1 or 2, then you are being way too modest --- pssst, that includes you, Wendy =) I've stopped adding any authors other than those on my booklist webpage because they already amount to 100 stories. I will add in the new stories that will be uploaded to the Archive this weekend when they are available (assuming the writers have given me permission). We are still tweaking our program a little bit so the recommended booklist may change even though you haven't added any new ratings. Plus, it may not be very accurate at this point yet. Note that the ratings on the website is actually from 0 stars to 4 stars. A slight miscommunication between my teammate who made the online form and myself. Also, since the website will only recommend stories you haven't read, if you've rated everything in the database, then your booklist will be empty. NOTE: the stars beside each title on your recommended fanfic list indicates how well that fanfic matches your own preferences. It has NOTHING to do with whether that fanfic is "good" or "bad". In fact, from entering all the rankings into the database, I found that (with the exception of 2 or 3 fanfics which got ratings of 3 to 5), every 1 of the 100 stories in the database has ratings from 1 to 5. So each reader's preference varies a lot. Anyway, that's it for now. I appreciate any feedback, good or bad really, on our website. Feel free to post here or e-mail me privately if you wish. Cheers, Simba (bcheng@sfu.ca) ========================================================================= Date: Wed, 29 Nov 2000 11:38:46 -0500 Reply-To: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: Pam Jernigan Organization: http://www.geocities.com/~chiefpam/ Subject: Re: User Adaptive Fanfic Website is Up! MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit It's up, it's good :) I just spent a few minutes playing around with it, and I had fun (Yeah, maybe I'm just weird) The design is very basic, but it works ... I liked looking at the recommendations, and it's *very* easy to rate stories from the drop down list. I also liked the way I could call up a story in one frame, read it, and immediately rate it in the other frame. And then get a new story list to look at. I rated my own stories in self-defense ;) because otherwise, they kept popping up on my recommendations list (at least partly because I have an embarrassingly large list of stories to choose from! :) but once I got myself out of the way I thought the program did a pretty decent job. Top of the list was a story I had forgotten to rank, but did really like ("Honor Between Thieves", as it happens). One of the other recommendations was a story I hadn't recognized from the title, but when I called it up, I found that I had read it, and liked it. All in all, an entertaining half an hour :) One thought, Simba ... some of the stories in your database are part of a series, have you given any weight to that factor? If I say that I loved/hated story X, part 1, would that have any bearing on how the program evaluates X part 2? Just wondering :) -- Pam Jernigan / ChiefPam / jernigan@bellsouth.net http://www.geocities.com/~chiefpam http://personal.rdu.bellsouth.net/~jernigan/ "I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. This includes going through *every* link on every page (not just the Nfic) looking for broken links. This includes anything that points back to the old URL at www.simplyorganized.simplenet.com. Plus double checking that all the pages are in the new format. If you are interested in helping please email me @ AMCiotola@aol.com. I'll take any volunteers, but you must have a membership to the Nfic Archvie mailing list in order to help with the Nfic side of the site. It's simple to use, does what it says, and best of all, does it very quickly (none of those irritating graphics which take ages to load ). I particularly like being able to read the stories recommended directly on the site, and then rate them if I want to. Very well done! MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit ACK!!! Oh, please, you Word for Windows users out there, please help! I was doing a final edit of my latest fanfic, and I went to hit Ctrl+S to save my work, but I must've hit the wrong key combination, because all of a sudden I had little paragraph indicators all over my document!! How the heck do I get rid of them??? I even tried saving the doc to a txt file, hoping that the conversion would wipe them out, but they even transferred over to the txt file. Then I tried to open a fresh document, and a paragraph mark showed up at the cursor position. What the heck did I turn on?? And how do I turn it off???? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! I had no less than 15 people email (privately and on-list) to offer suggestions, and yes, I got the problem solved (thanks Amy and Judith!). Turns out there's a button (hidden, in my case, since my toolbar was customized) that, with a bit of hunting, I was able to toggle to turn the paragraph marks off, and voila! They all disappeared. :) So thank you to everyone who emailed me!! My story will forever be in your debt. I will say it to the day I die because it's true: FoLCs are truly the best, most helpful group of people I know. :) ~~Erin __________________ erink@ida.net Visit my LNC/Kerth Website: www.ida.net/users/davek ***** "It's not the years that count, it's the moments...right now, as they happen." __________________ >-----Original Message----- >From: AMCiotola@aol.com [mailto:AMCiotola@aol.com] >Sent: Thursday, November 30, 2000 2:32 PM >To: erink@ida.net >Subject: Re: OT: Need "Word" help, quick!! > > >Ya know? If you don't want to see them (assuming you're using Word97 and you haven't remapped your tool bar), go to Tools-Options-View and under nonprinting characters you can check on or off what you want to see (spaces, paragraph signs, hidden text, etc). You can change these defaults at any time. Sometimes it is a handy thing to be able to see these formating notes, other times they're in the way. >Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Yeah, no kidding. Thanks Debby, and once again, thanks to everyone else who helped. I was really sweating it out there for a few minutes. :) My main concern was that we have Word 2000 on the computer...have had for a couple of years since my hubby was doing some beta testing on it, but I *still* don't know all the ins and outs of it yet, and I wasn't sure if there would be others out there using it who could tell me what to do. But since I couldn't reach my hubby at work, I'm glad I thought to put out the cry for help here. I should've known all you talented folcs would be able to help me out! :) Thanks again!
