LOL, Debby, I couldn't resist replying to this post! Your quote is almost word for word what a friend of mine said when she was told that she was told (in a hospital emergency room) that she was about to deliver, although she prefaced her statement with, "Deliver what, a pizza?" As hard as it is to believe, there are women who don't realize they're pregnant until they're about to give birth. *That* might be an interesting twist to add to a fanfic ;) Pat peabody@mcs.com pattijean@aol.com ========================================================================= Date: Sun, 29 Aug 1999 21:49:28 -0500 Reply-To: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: Kathy Brown Subject: Re: OT: FoLC looking for S1&2 episodes In-Reply-To: <19990829120302.20505.rocketmail@web601.yahoomail.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" At 2:03 PM +0200 8/29/99, R. Some of the more comedic bits in fanfic comes from people jumping to some hysterically wrong conclusions, as the following excerpts will show you. :) Be warned: the last three fics deal with *you*, the reader, jumping to the wrong conclusion. I've snipped the next lines or words which reveal what the actual conclusion should be. Such fics are sometimes even funnier than the other kind! And another hint: two stories are actually by the same author; I guess *some* people's wicked humor just can't be suppressed. :) One story is *not* available on the archive. Use spoiler space in your replies, supply title and author. Same rules as always! Oh, one more thing: this one has a deadline of sorts. Thursday will be my last day online for the next month, so you'll have to get answers in by then. :) Have fun! Hazel Excerpt 1:=20 Lucy grinned back, rubbing her earlobe. "Clark, have you seen my earrings? I don't remember where I put them." Clark swallowed his last bite and thought for a moment. "Well, I think I saw them on the night table in the bedroom." "Oh, yes. Right. My mind was elsewhere when I eventually got to bed." Lois mind reeled. Lucy and Clark? Clark and Lucy? But how? When? WHY? "But now you're feeling okay, aren't you, Lucy?" "Hm, yes. Better than I have in a long while. Staying with you does wonders for me. Now I know why Lois always runs to you." Lucy gave Clark a soft, intimate smile.=20 Lois wanted to throw up her breakfast. Clark and her own sister obviously had done IT, here, last night. She didn't know if she should run as fast and far as she could or give them a piece or two of her mind. Anger and pain rose inside her. Lucy, her own sister had done it with Clark, her partner and the guy she lov..... sort of liked. Excerpt 2: Then enlightenment struck. Superman! Superman wore red spandex briefs! Jimmy stopped in his tracks and grinned hugely. He knew there would be a logical explanation -- Superman was why C.K. had been wearing red spandex under his clothes! He began to chuckle at the repercussions of this realization. Obviously, Clark would do anything for Lois, but, still, he didn't think C.K. would go that far! "Geez," Jimmy said to himself, "love really does do strange things to a man!" It'd been apparent since Superman first appeared that Lois was attracted to him. She'd thrown herself at him for almost two whole years while poor C.K. had waited, painfully, in the wings -- which made it all the more unbelievable that he'd do this for her now that he'd finally won her. Clearly, Lois still had her Superman fantasy, and she'd convinced Clark to act it out for her. Excerpt 3: Fuzzily, she noticed a note on the counter. What had happened=20 last night? The last thing she remembered was Clark -- =20 Lois grabbed the note from the counter and read: "The=20 Daily Planet and Lexcorp invite you to their annual Charity=20 Ball..." *other side, Lane, other side!* =20 Lois, =20 Last night was...wild. I didn't mean for it to happen =20 this way, but I guess we both knew it had to happen =20 sometime. I hope, now that this is over, that we can =20 move on in this new stage in our relationship, and I=20 hope that you still respect me. I'll call you later. =20 Love, Clark =20 Lois sat down on the floor, hard. *This is not possible!=20 We didn't, I mean, I'd remember _that_... Excerpt 4: Cark was just toweling off from his long, hot shower, when there was a=20 knock at his apartment door. "What now?" he muttered to himself as he=20 wrapped the towel around his lean waist. He was in the middle of opening=20 his front door when he realized that he hadn't put on his glasses. Lois was= =20 standing there, looking up at him with her mouth wide open. "Lois! Hi..." Clark began, fully expecting that he would have a lot=20 of explaining to do. "Superman! Wha...at are you doing here?" Lois stammered, obviously=20 thrown off-balance by the sight of Clark's mostly naked, glistening body. Clark cocked an eyebrow as his devious mind started working. He=20 crossed his arms, put on his most serious Superman face, and said, "Lois,= =20 there's something I have to tell you." He paused for effect. "Clark and I= =20 are more than 'just friends'." Lois looked puzzled at first. Then her eyebrows rose as the=20 implications dawned on her. "Oh..." she started. "Um..." she tried again.= =20 "Oh...I see," she said finally.=20 Excerpt 5: Her bag was packed and waiting for her by the front door. Lois quietly walked into the dining room. Clark, her husband of almost two years, sat at the table his back toward her, his nose buried in a file. She watched him silently for a moment. "Do it, Lois, you have to tell him how you feel ..." She thought to herself frowning, holding back her tears. "Clark?" she said aloud. =20 "Hmmm?" he answered not looking up from his work, his attention still focused on the mounds of paper in front of him. "Clark," she bit at her lip then started again slowly, "I can't ... do this ... anymore." She tried to hold back a sob. "I thought it would all be so much different - I thought *we'd* be different ..." She trailed off, disappointment and disgust mingling on her face. Clark looked up startled. He had had a feeling something like this was coming but he had no idea it would be this soon. "Lois, honey ..." He began with a smile, his attention shifting to his wife. "Don't!" she shouted, "Don't be condescending, you're just insulting me! I just want this over so that we can both get on with our lives. Is it so hard to accept that I've changed my mind, that I want out? I've thought about this a lot lately and ..."=20 =20 Excerpt 6: Lois reached up and stroked his face, the face which was now very=20 dear to her. "Clark=85 you can't believe how happy I am to see you=20 alive. But... but *how*? You were shot at point-blank range... you=20 *had* to be dead!" She saw him frown again. "Ummm... well, Lois, there's something I=20 have to tell you. And I know I should have told you before now - it=20 wasn't fair of me to deceive you the way I did. And the way this=20 worked out, you had to suffer needlessly, all because I never told=20 you." His voice was soft, apologetic, regretful. He held her closer=20 to him again briefly, then loosened his grasp so that he could brush=20 a kiss across her forehead. She waited. After a moment, he spoke again. "Lois=85 the reason I wasn't killed=20 tonight is because that bullet couldn't have killed me." He sighed=20 heavily, as if afraid that she would be angry when he finally told=20 her. "Lois, I... "=20 Excerpt 7: DAN SCARDINO, mid 30's, dark curly hair, too old to be=20 wearing Hawaiian Shirts, but still is, walks up from the=20 driveway. LOIS (looking up at Dan) You're early! DAN (smiling) Something smells wonderful! What's for dinner? LOIS (smiling back, she gets up holding Josh) I don't know. What did you bring with you? DAN (ignoring Lois and tickling Josh) Hello there, my little man. How are you doing? LOIS (thrusting Josh into Dan's arms) Your little man needs changing. Why don't you do=20 that while I start dinner? DISSOLVE TO: INT. KITCHEN - MINUTES LATER Lois is preparing pasta and a salad, moving around her kitchen. DAN (OS) (laughing) You're killing me! You're killing me! I'm too old to=20 give piggy back rides! HA! Dan and Josh come riding into the kitchen. Josh is beating on=20 Dan's head with his pudgy little fists and enjoying every minute. DAN You've been teaching your son well, I see! I can recall=20 a time when you spent, what felt like many long=20 minutes, beating me over the head with a plunger! =20 (beat) OUCH! LOIS (Smiling and pushing him towards the door) And you loved every minute of it! Now, get out of here=20 so that I can finish what I'm doing. Scat! Portable phones are the kind that have to be in range of the home base unit. Like you can take them outside in the yard, but not much further away. Cell phones, on the other hand, will only work if they are within the distance of a "cell" or send/receiving tower. Whether or not they'd work in an alternate universe may depend mainly on whether the user is in range of of a "cell" AND whether or not the system of how they work is the same in both universes. As for fingerprints, yes, if you're talking about the "same" people who are genetically identical, than the fingerprints would be the same EXCEPT for minor differences that were caused by old injuries (cuts, scars, etc.) As for the rest, well, it depends on how similar the universes are, I suppose. That, I'll leave totally up to you, the author. I'd suspect that the answers may vary from universe to universe . --Laurie ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 30 Aug 1999 14:52:26 -0500 Reply-To: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: Hazel Subject: Re: questions for a fic In-Reply-To: <4fae50a0.24fc3795@aol.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Laurie, thanks for the quick reply. ><< Also, a few hypothetical questions that would also help: if a person enters > an alternate universe but remains within the original universe's coverage > area, would the phone work? I guess whether it works will depend on whether someone else in that universe (the same alt character?) has that account. However, in that case, the charge for the call would appear on the alt character's phone bill, not the "visitor's". As others have mentioned, I think the answer to your other questions is up to you! :) Does alt-Lois have the same jeep? If it's the same year and the exact same vehicle, then the keys should work. If she bought it 4 years later and it's a newer model, then the keys won't. (i.e., did Alt Lois buy the exact same vehicle as our Lois, or did she just buy the same type of vehicle?) My opinion on the money and the keys to Clark's apartment being the same is that they would be identical. (I doubt the owner of Clark's apartment bothered to change the locks between renters, given the sorry state of the apt when Clark moved in. I bet Clark's fixing it up raised the value of the apt significantly. ) But again, this is up to you. You could make a case for either. Sounds like this is going to be a fun story! :) Kathy ______________________ Kathy Brown kathyb@springnet1.com KathyB on IRC ______________________ ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 30 Aug 1999 13:15:21 -0700 Reply-To: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: "Irene D." Summary: A rewrite of "All Shook Up". Part One This story started out as a "what if" scenario for the thirty minute challenge on Zoom's message boards. I've taken the original little vignette and expanded on it here. Thank you to everyone who responded to this on the message boards for encouraging me to continue with this story. All standard disclaimers apply. Shaken Not Stirred Irene Dutchak Lois surreptitiously watched her partner as the elevator ascended. Poor Clark. He looked so lost and forlorn. It was hard not dealing with him as she normally would. She had to admit that she normally enjoyed their customary banter back and forth. He didn't take any lip >from her, and it was a welcome change from her other colleagues - with the exception of Perry, of course. Clark had been downright good for her. She had to be honest and admit that she had gotten her own way around the newsroom for far too long. It was true; she had talent, drive and professionalism, but it wasn't enough for her. Not anymore. She enjoyed the friendly competition between her and Clark, and she enjoyed the easy camaraderie. He challenged her, and caused her to grow. He was her friend - her best friend. She liked that. A couple of times, she thought she had sensed something more than friendship from him, but so far, it hadn't panned out. That was okay. The idea of being close to someone was terrifying to her. But at the same time, she trusted Clark, and she trusted him not to hurt her. It was very confusing. Sometimes it sure seemed hard keeping things on an even keel with him. She hated to admit it to herself, but he was very, very attractive. Every once in a while, when they were working together, she would find herself dwelling on him, on how he looked in this outfit or that. It wasn't that Lois was shallow, that she only appreciated the physical, but when you added his good looks into the "total package" that was Clark Kent, the combination was pretty overwhelming. And there was a faint, intriguing air of mystery about him that was at odds with his Kansas "what you see, is what you get" style. It was at those times that she wistfully wondered if maybe something more than friendship might not turn out to be a good thing after all. But right now, none of that was important to her. Her friend was hurt and he needed her help. Even as her worry and fear twisted her stomach into acid knots, her heart ached as she saw the lost little boy look on her partner's face. Much as she wanted to take him by the shoulders and shake some sense into him, she knew that wouldn't give her the results she needed. She needed her partner back, and she was just going to have to be patient until that happened. She smiled wryly to herself. In spite of her protestations otherwise to Inspector Henderson, she did know "patient" was something she didn't do well, but if that's what Clark needed, that's what Clark would get! As she mused about Clark and about her relationship with him, worry about Superman and his whereabouts ran through the back of her mind. Was he hurt? Where was he? Was he in rough shape like Clark was, and had no one to help him? Why hadn't he contacted anyone? Was he already heading back into space to try again to destroy the asteroid? She almost felt as if she had lost both of her friends. One was nowhere to be found, and the other one, well, he was here, in body at least, even if his memories had gone AWOL. The elevator doors slid open, and Lois led Clark to his desk. The whole situation felt completely unreal to her. It was like being in a really, really bad soap opera. "This is your desk. Look familiar?" Lois asked, hopefully. "I'm sorry. No," Clark replied, in a dejected tone of voice. "You always come in and grab a donut from the coffee area. You usually like the cake things with the frosting. They're a little stale now. Are you hungry?" Lois could hear herself talking too fast, worried about her friend, but she wasn't able to make herself slow down. "I can't remember anything. I'm not starving. I'm fine," Clark replied as he dubiously eyed the donut in Lois's hand. Lois found Clark his spare pair of glasses. She didn't know how he had ended up with the pair he had on, but they didn't suit him as well as his regular pair. "You keep a second pair," she said as she handed him his own glasses. He reached up, removed the dirty glasses he was wearing, and then looked at her, puzzled and confused. "Lois, I don't understand why I wear glasses. I can see perfectly fine without them." "I don't know, Clark. Maybe you have astigmatism or someth..." Lois stopped in shock and stared at his face. "What?" Clark was alarmed by the expression on her face. "What's wrong?" Lois couldn't believe it. But the evidence was right in front of her. She thought fast and furiously. "Nothing's wrong, Clark," she managed to say calmly. "But I think you should put your glasses on." He shrugged and complied with her wishes. She couldn't believe it. What was she going to do? A wave of anger rose in her, hot, and fiery, but she forced it back down. Now was not the time to throw a tantrum. The world needed Superman, and by God, she was going to deliver Superman to the world if it was the last thing she did! And it might be the last thing she attempted, she reflected wryly. The asteroid was still coming, and if the nuclear missiles missed, well, ... game over! However, after the world was saved, that was a different story! Mr. Clark "Superman" Kent wasn't going to get off so lightly then! In the meantime, she needed a plan. She needed a quiet place to think, and figure this out, and to figure out what to do with Clark. She couldn't do it here. Where could they go? What was she going to say to him? Hmm, well, there was really only one place they could go, wasn't there? "Clark, I think we should head over to your apartment, and get you in some clean clothes. Then we have a lot of work to do." "Okay, Lois." His compliance irritated her. Look at him, the big dumb lunkhead. He just stood there looking back at her as if she was going to make everything all better! That was supposed to be his job! Out of the corner of her eye, Lois could see Perry and Jimmy approaching. They had to get out of there now! She hustled him back out of the building and into her jeep as fast as she could. She was silent as she drove. Her mind was too full of her new knowledge, and she was too uncomfortable with his loss of memory for her to have any idea what to say. She was aware of him studying her as she drove. She wondered what he was thinking. She wondered what she was thinking. She couldn't seem to get a handle on her own thoughts and feelings at the moment. All sorts of random thoughts floated through her head. < I guess if anything were going to give Superman amnesia, getting an asteroid dropped on his head would do it! > Lois clung to her last thought. Why hadn't he told her? They were friends. Clark knew how she felt about Superman. He had to know that she would never hurt him, the Greek God who had saved her so many times. For heaven's sake, it was no secret that she loved Superman; she had told Clark on any number of occasions. Wait! She had told Clark. She had told Clark about Superman. She had never told him about 'Clark'. She had gushed ad nauseam about how good looking Superman was, about how wonderful Superman was, about how much she loved Superman. When had she ever said those kinds of things about Clark? It was obvious thinking about this whole weird situation that Clark was not the disguise; Superman was. So, she had been expending a heck of a lot of energy chasing after, flirting with, and complimenting a guy who didn't really exist. How would that have made him feel? She blanched as she considered the implications of her last question. Maybe that was the reason she could knock him off-balance so effortlessly. She had noticed her effect on him before. He could be so smooth, and self-confident in difficult situations, and then get completely tongue-tied with her. She glanced at him surreptitiously. He was studying the city landscape, as if he had never seen anything like it before. Poor guy! A wave of guilt swept through her at what she had done to him and she let go of her anger. She must have made him feel awful! And what had he done to her that was so bad? He had saved her life on any number of occasions in his one role, and been her friend, her best friend in the other. If she wasn't happy now, knowing that she had made a fool of herself over Superman, how must he feel? Or at least, how would he feel if he could remember the whole complicated, weird, and bizarre triangular relationship they shared? She couldn't think of any time that he had intentionally set out to hurt her. Well, okay, there was that time when he sent her to the dump in search of a lead on Superman, but even at the time, she had known that her behaviour had been completely over the top and unprofessional. And he had hurt her when he horned in on her lead at the Metros Club and she had ended up being literally thrown out of the Club. But he had had his reasons. She hadn't agreed with him, and, after she had pointed out the error of his ways -- on numerous occasions -- over the course of a few weeks -- or was it months, she couldn't remember - he had seen the light and had promised not to make the same mistake twice. That had been a situation that had struck to the heart of their working relationship, but at the same time, for some reason, it had never affected their friendship. That had never been an issue. Lois had always known that he cared for her, and respected her as a friend, and that he needed her in his life. But needed her as what? As a friend? As more than a friend? Now there was a scary concept. No time to think about it. They were here. End of Part One __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Summary: A rewrite of "All Shook Up". Part Two "Does the building look familiar at all?" He shrugged, and didn't say a word. He remained silent as they entered the building. As they entered Clark's apartment, Lois was aware of the anticipation on his face. The expression flickered and died quickly as he looked around. "Do you recognize anything? Anything at all?" "No." Lois watched him move around the room, examining mementos, and other personal objects dispassionately. He paused and picked up a small, framed picture. "These are my parents?" he asked diffidently, as he turned back to her for confirmation. "Yes, they're really nice people. Perry tried to call them, but he couldn't get through on the phone lines. I guess with this thing coming, the Asteroid, the lines are overloaded with people calling each other." He looked even more depressed at her words. "People calling their friends and family," he stated bluntly. "Yes." "Do you have anyone that you have to call?" Lois smiled wryly. "I talked to my mom, my dad, and my sister earlier." "Do I have anyone that I have to call?" "What do you mean, Clark?" He sat down on the couch and ran his fingers through his hair in agitation. "I mean, besides my parents, Lois. Do I have anyone special in my life?" Lois sat down beside him. "No, Clark. You don't." He shook his head. "I find that really sad. Why wouldn't I be seeing anyone? Is there something ... wrong with me? Am I not a nice guy, normally?" Lois couldn't help it. She laughed out loud. "Clark, you are the nicest guy I've ever met. There is nothing wrong with you." "And we are friends, right?" Clark asked her quizzically. "Sure we're friends," Lois replied, forcing a warm tone into her voice. "Are we ...more than friends?" Lois thought to herself. "More than...? I told you. We're partners. We work closely together." "How close? "Close. Not close, close, but close." Lois gazed deeply into his eyes, trying to show him how much she cared without having to say the words out loud. Clark lost himself for a moment in her gaze, and then forced himself to break the connection between them. "I bet you're a great reporter." "See? Your memory's already starting to come back..." Lois kept her tone light, trying to lift his spirits. He smiled wanly. Obviously her feeble joke hadn't helped that much. Lois paused, lost in thought for a moment. Should she tell him that he was Superman? She didn't know. But he needed to remember. The world needed Superman, now, more than ever. Prevaricating, unable to make a decision, Lois opted for the easy way out. "How about we make some coffee and then we can talk some more?" She jumped to her feet and extended her hand to him. He smiled, took it, and stood up beside her. "Thanks, Lois. That's a good idea." Lois led him to the kitchen, chattering nervously all the way. "It's a good thing we're friends, Clark, because I know where you keep everything. I'll get the kettle going and find the mugs, and you look for the cream and sugar. I'm going to want a healthy dollop of each in my coffee." "Hey, I'm remembering something. You don't drink real coffee with real milk with real sugar." Lois smiled grimly at him. "I do today." Lois's beeper went off as the two of them were just about to sit back down on the couch with their coffee. "Just a second, Clark. I just want to use your phone for a second." She quickly dialed the Planet and spoke briefly. She came back to the couch looking puzzled. "Listen, Clark, Lex Luthor wants to see me." Clark looked blank so she continued. "He's the most connected man in Metropolis. Could be something, but ... its going to have to wait. You're more important to me right now." Clark looked up quickly, shocked but pleased. "I am?" "Of course you are, Clark. You're my best friend." Lois came to a decision. She didn't know if it was the right decision, but it was the only one she felt she could make. "And there's something else I have to tell you. Something really, really, really important." Clark sat up a little straighter on the couch. "What is it?" He looked a little alarmed. Lois smiled at him in reassurance and patted him lightly on the arm. "This is going to come as a big shock to you, Clark, because it's obvious to me that you've forgotten, but ... you're Superman." Clark jumped to his feet, agitated and started to pace back and forth. "That's crazy! I may not remember much but everything I've heard about this guy so far, he's unreal. They say he's not even from this planet." Lois asked him calmly, "Would you like me to prove it to you?" "Yeah! I sure would, because right now, I'm thinking you're nuts. And that is not a comfortable thought to have about the only friend I have at the moment." "Clark, calm down. I have a picture of Superman here that I want to show you." Lois dug deep into her purse, found her wallet and extracted a photo. "You carry a picture of Superman around with you?" Lois blushed. "It came with the wallet." Lois got up, and led Clark to the mirror in the bathroom. "Okay, Clark, take your glasses off and let me slick your hair back." He grudgingly complied. "Now, look at this picture, and then look at yourself - I mean, really look at yourself." As if to humour his partner, Clark glanced quickly at the photo, and then up to his image in the mirror. His eyes widened. "I ... I don't know what to say," he stammered. "But ... no way. I must just look like this guy. I can't be him. I don't know how to be him." "Okay, let me prove it a different way." Lois started rummaging through his medicine cabinet. Not finding what she needed there, she looked quickly in the drawer of the bathroom cabinet. "Aha!" She brandished a pair of scissors in triumph. Clark eyed her nervously. "What are you planning on doing with those?" "I'm going to give you a hair cut, or at least, I'm going to try. If I succeed, we'll know that I'm wrong, but if I can't do it, we'll know the truth, once and for all. Okay?" Clark nodded once in agreement and visibly braced himself as Lois reached for a lock of his hair. "Cra-ack!" Both their jaws dropped as they watched the scissors fall apart leaving Clark's hair unscathed. "Wow!" Clark's eyes met Lois's in the bathroom mirror. She looked just as shocked as he did. It was one thing for her to know something theoretically, but it was sure another thing to know it irrevocably. They stumbled back to the couch, and sat down yet again. Clark ran his fingers through his hair in agitation, and looked blankly at the wall, obviously trying to assimilate this shock to his system. Lois waited patiently, watching him all the while, as she continued to try to integrate this new knowledge about him into her image of Clark Kent. "Wait a second here! Lois, in the bathroom, you said 'we'll know'. 'We'll know if I'm wrong' and 'we'll know the truth'. You didn't know, did you? I mean, not for sure. You suspected, but you didn't know." "You're right, Clark. You never told me. I figured it out earlier. Back at the newsroom, when you took your glasses off. I've never seen you without your glasses before, and as soon as I did, well, I just knew." "I guess that's why you looked so strange." "Yeah, you could say, it was a bit of a surprise." She grinned at him. He didn't notice. He looked at his hands, obviously searching for the right words, and the right questions. "Why didn't I tell you? You said that we're best friends?" "Yeah, we are, and I don't know why you didn't tell me, Clark. That's a question that I'll be asking you when you have all your memories back." Clark shook his head. "I just don't understand. I trust you. I mean, >from my point of view, I've only known you for a few hours, but I feel like I've known you forever. Why wouldn't I tell you? I know that you would never do anything to hurt me." Lois winced. "Not on purpose anyway." Clark was quick to pick up on her facial expression. "What? Have you ever hurt me?" Lois hesitated for a moment. "I think I have, Clark, but I didn't mean to. Superman, your alter ego, he hasn't existed for very long. I don't know exactly why you created this disguise, but I would guess it was to help people without having all the attention and hoopla take over your life. Anyway, I've been making a fuss over Superman, not knowing that he was you, and, well, this is hard to say, but... I've been ignoring you in favour of your creation. I think... I think I've made you jealous," Lois continued in a rush of words. "Why would you do that - I mean, make such a fuss?" "I don't know, Clark. I think it was safer somehow. Superman always seemed so desirable, but at the same time, unattainable. It was safe to have feelings for him - or you as him, I mean. I've been hurt before, and I guess I'm just scared of getting involved with anyone again." Clark was silent, assimilating this information. "But I still don't get it. How could I be jealous of, of me?" Clark asked, shaking his head. "Well, maybe it's something else. Why do you think you didn't tell me?" "Um, well, maybe it's because this is a dangerous secret. From everything I heard on the news about this guy, I mean, about me -- no, he doesn't feel like me. How about I just say, about Superman? Anyway, he's got a lot of enemies who would really like to hurt him. A secret like that could put you in a lot of danger, Lois. And, well, I don't know exactly what I was thinking before but, I really would not want to see you in danger." Lois laughed. "You better get used to it, Clark. I investigated dangerous stories long before you ever showed up, and I've probably got as many enemies as Superman! Me in danger? Welcome to my world." Clark groaned and buried his head in his hands. "I'm never going to get used to this, Lois." She laughed again, and slipped her arm around his shoulders. "Yes, you are, Clark, and I'm going to help you. Okay?" He glanced up at her with a half-smile on his face. "Okay." As Lois warmly gazed into his eyes, his expression abruptly changed again. He winced in pain, and clapped his hands to his ears. "Ow!!" "Clark, what is it?" Lois asked worriedly. "It's so loud. I can't turn it off. It hurts." Clark rocked back and forth, still covering his ears. His eyes were screwed tightly shut. He showed every sign of being a man in intense agony. Lois hurriedly looked around the apartment. She didn't hear anything out of the ordinary. Cutting through the normal city traffic sounds outside, she could hear the faint sound of a siren off in the distance but ... Her eyes narrowed in thought. "Clark, look at me. Look at me!" Lois grabbed him by the shoulders and shook him. Hard. It was effective though. He opened his eyes and squinted at her. She gripped his hands, and pulled hard, trying to force them away from his ears. "You have to listen to me. Listen carefully. Focus on my voice. Just my voice and nothing else..." Lois continued speaking quietly and repetitively, saying the same things over and over again. As she talked, his body gradually relaxed its tense stance, and his expression cleared. "Are you all right now?" "I think so. What the heck happened?" "I'm not sure, Clark, but I think you lost your ability to focus on one sound at a time. You have pretty great hearing normally, super hearing in fact, and it's obvious to me that you must be able to - oh, I don't know - switch it on or off when you want to." She smiled at him tenderly. "Don't forget. This is all pretty new to me too so I don't have all the answers." Clark looked down at his hands. He spoke softly. "Lois, I don't know if I can do this. I don't know how to be Superman. I'm scared. Everyone is counting on me, and I'm afraid that I'm going to let everyone down. Even if I am ... Superman, I'm only one man." "Now listen to me, Clark. You're forgetting something. You're not alone. I'm here and I'm going to help you." Clark cupped her cheek in his large, warm hand. "Thank you, Lois. You're right. That helps." He yawned suddenly, startling himself. "Clark, I can tell that you're exhausted. I should go, and come back later." "No," he interrupted. "Please don't. I don't... I don't think I could handle being alone right now. Is that okay?" Lois smiled warmly at him. "Of course it's okay. But you need to sleep. I never thought about it before, but it must be pretty tiring flying into space and getting whacked on the head by an asteroid!" He laughed. "I guess it's not something that you and your other friends have ever wondered about!" She giggled. "No, can't say that it's ever come up in conversation before! Anyway, Clark, I'm not that tired. I could do some reading out here for a couple of hours while you have a nap in your bedroom." "Are you sure you don't mind?" "Clark, I'm going to tell you again. You're my friend and I'm worried about you. Of course I don't mind. But one other thing, Clark. I'm worried about Superman too. He's needed, and I think I better stay and try to do whatever I can to get Superman back to full strength." His expression darkened at her words. Her words had reminded him of what was out there, heading for the earth. "Clark, we have enough time for you to sleep before we have to worry about the asteroid. You'll feel better, and think better, and hopefully, remember better after you've had some sleep. So head in there and have a nap, okay?" His expression lightened again. "All right, Lois. You win. I'll have a nap. You're sure you'll be okay out here?" Lois laughed. He might not remember too much, but he hadn't changed at all - still the world's biggest Boy Scout. She gestured to his bedroom and said one word. "Go." He held up his hands in surrender, and headed off to bed without any more arguments. Summary: A rewrite of "All Shook Up". Part Three Lois puttered around the kitchen and living room. She poured herself another cup of coffee, and browsed happily through his very eclectic book collection. The faint sounds of him moving around in the bathroom and bedroom had faded away by the time she had selected a book and had curled back up on the couch. But instead of opening the book, she set it aside and started thinking over the events of the last few hours. And they had certainly been eventful hours. Things would never be the same between her and Clark ever again. She leaned back and closed her eyes for a moment, only to open them again in a panic. She didn't want to fall asleep. There wasn't time. Lois got off the couch and restlessly moved to the kitchen, then back to the living room. Without planning it, she peeked around the corner into his bedroom - just to check that he was asleep, of course. He was. Sound asleep. He had changed out of his ragged clothes into sweatpants, and a cut-off sweatshirt. He looked comfortable. Almost without volition, Lois found herself moving all the way into his bedroom. She came to a stop near the head of the bed, and watched him sleep. The temptation to touch him was overwhelming, and Lois finally gave in to it, sitting lightly on the edge of the bed, and smoothing his hair back from his forehead. He rolled toward her, throwing an arm over her lap, pinning her in place. She didn't care. She was content being there with him, touching him lightly and lovingly. At that moment, she realized that she loved Clark - that she had always loved Clark. Her feelings for Superman were just a dim reflection of what she now felt for her friend. Her whole friend. More importantly, she loved him for who he was, and not because of what he could do. She would love him, even if he were an ordinary man. For this one, brief, shining moment, suffused with tenderness for him, she felt no fear. No fear that he would hurt her. No fear that he would betray her. And no fear that he couldn't be trusted. Her hand shifted to his back, stroking him soothingly, and rhythmically. He shifted slightly, rolling onto his back. His eyes opened, and locked onto hers. He didn't say anything. "I'm sorry," she murmured. "I didn't mean to wake you. I just wanted to check that you were sleeping okay." He remained silent, still gazing deeply into her eyes, and then hooked an arm around her, and dragged her down beside him. Wrapping his arms around her, he pressed his lips firmly against hers. It was a tender kiss as opposed to a passionate one. Caring, and warm, and loving, it held a wealth of meaning for both of them. Friendship, tenderness, trust. All those feelings and more were there, out in the open. Finally, out in the open. They were so focused on each other, on that kiss, that perhaps it was forgivable that neither one of them heard the apartment door open. "Clark Jerome Kent! Your father and I had to fight our way across town, dodging maniacs, not able to find a taxi, and we get here to find you necking? Like a teenager? I thought I raised you better than that!" Lois and Clark bolted upright, and regarded the fiery older woman with disbelief. "Martha?" Clark turned to Lois. "She's my mom, right?" Martha careened around the bedroom, practically bouncing off walls, carried by the strength of her righteous indignation. Her words tumbled out of her mouth, one on top of the other, until Clark's question to Lois registered. She faltered, and fell silent. "Yes, she's your mother." At Martha and Jonathan's wide-eyed looks of consternation, Lois addressed them directly. "He has amnesia, Martha and Jonathan. He doesn't remember you. He doesn't remember anything." Jonathan dropped their luggage with a thump. Martha sat down heavily on the bed beside them. "Amnesia?" Clark looked quizzically at his mom and dad. "I'm sorry, but I don't remember anything at all." "Not anything? But you have to remember... You need to remember..." Martha was at a loss. "That I'm Superman?" Clark continued. Jonathan turned even paler. Martha was aghast. Panic-stricken, they both turned as one, and regarded Lois solemnly. "Lois, he's not Superman." "It's the amnesia talking." "He just looks like Superman." "It's a ... a party trick, a thing he does at parties." "He's just joking, just funning around." "I don't know why he would say ..." "Stop! It's okay, guys, really." Lois held up her hand catching their attention. "I figured it out today, all on my own. Clark didn't tell me that he's Superman. He didn't know. No, I told him." "You know?" Lois reached out and touched Martha lightly on the arm. "I know. And Martha and Jonathan, you need to know that I would never do anything to hurt Clark. You can trust me." Martha and Jonathan exchanged a meaningful glance and then turned back to Lois, all smiles. Martha was the first to speak. "I'm glad you know, Lois. And we know we can trust you." Jonathan was quick to chime in, agreeing with his wife. Lois felt hot tears prick her eyes at their easy acceptance of her, and at their unconditional trust. "Thank you." She and Martha reached out simultaneously, and they fell into each other's arms. Clark looked at the two women who were practically crying as they hugged tightly, and then looked blankly at his father who shrugged and smiled in response. Clark didn't want to interrupt them, but he finally suggested, "Why don't we all move back to the living room so we can figure everything out?" Martha and Lois pulled away from each other. Martha snuffled a bit, while Lois wiped her cheeks with the back of her hand. She looked sheepishly at Clark. "Good idea." The four of them moved back to the living room. Lois got everyone coffee. Martha and Jonathan noted that Clark made a point of sitting close to Lois on the couch. It didn't take long for the two reporters to fill the Kent's in as to what had happened. Now the big question was, what were they going to do about everything? Martha started things off by leading Clark and Lois into his bedroom. Lois watched with wide-eyed amazement as Martha retrieved three Superman uniforms from the hiding place in Clark's closet. Clark laughed. "Cool! Did I make all this?" Martha gestured at the suits. "I sewed them for you. But you made the secret compartment." Just then, Jonathan called them back to the living room. He had turned on the TV, and the countdown had started for the Asgard rockets to intercept the asteroid. They all sat down together, with Martha clutching Clark's one arm, and Lois holding his other hand tightly. They were all hopeful that the Asgards would deliver their nuclear missile payload properly so that Clark would be able to recover in his own time. No one wanted to force him to do anything that might hurt him all over again. They listened intently to the voice of Ground Control. "Tracking telemetry zero, niner, alpha." The narrator paused. "The Asgard rocket has missed its target. Repeat, the Asgard rocket has missed its target." Jonathan shut off the TV. They sat in silence for a long moment. "The world needs you now. More than it ever has, I expect," Jonathan said portentously. Martha couldn't help but protest. "Jonathan, he's already tried once..." "What choice is there but to try again?" was her husband's response. Lois was silent, still clutching Clark's hand in hers. She could feel his tension, his apprehension. "Flying into space to stop an asteroid doesn't exactly come natural, does it?" Clark asked haltingly. "You're the only one who can do it, son." Jonathan gripped Clark's shoulder firmly. "Can I? Even if what you're telling me about being Superman is true, I still don't remember how to be him." Lois released his hand, only to put her arm around his hunched shoulders. "Clark, maybe with our help, you could try and get control over some of your other super-powers. You're able to control your super-hearing okay now, right?" "Yeah," he confirmed reluctantly. Martha and Jonathan were quick to pounce on Lois's suggestion. "Great idea, Lois! Come on, Clark. Let's head to the roof. We can work on flying next!" The two of them grabbed Clark's hands, pulled him off the couch, and whisked him out of the room. Lois was left sitting alone. "I was kind of thinking about x-ray vision," she muttered to herself. She got up, and slowly followed the trio to the roof. She arrived in time to hear Martha trying to convince Clark that he could, in fact, fly. She decided to hang back a bit, and watch for now. "It must be like riding a bicycle, Clark. You probably don't forget how to fly, once you've done it. Give it a try," Martha suggested. Clark gave a little hop into the air. Nothing. "Do I flap my arms or something?" His mother answered, "Usually when you fly, you do this." And she struck a Superman type pose. "It's just instinct, I think. You just will it to happen," Jonathan added, in an attempt to be helpful. "But you said I didn't fly until I was eighteen. So I had to figure out how to do it. And right now, I can't remember," Clark protested. "Just walk up to the edge, Clark and do it," Jonathan stated firmly, trying to quell his son's objections. As Lois watched, Clark walked up to the edge of the roof, raised his arms awkwardly into the air, and looked straight down. He looked back at his parents. "I don't know about this." Martha patted him on the arm. "Honey, it'll all come back to you once you get going." "Okay." "You want me to help you?" Martha asked. "Why don't you just give me a count?" "On three. One, two..." Lois gasped as Martha, on the count of two, gave Clark a healthy shove off the roof. She rushed to the edge in time to see Clark land in the alley below. "Is he okay?" she asked. Martha patted her on the arm, then sighed. "I would expect so, Lois. He is Superman, after all." Lois turned to Martha and Jonathan. "This isn't working. I'd like to try talking to Clark by myself for a while, if that's okay with you two." After silently checking with his wife, Jonathan turned to Lois. "Couldn't hurt, I guess." Lois made her way quickly down the stairs, and met Clark as he was emerging from the alley. "Hi." "Hi." Clark ruefully looked back at the alley. "Guess you saw all that, huh?" "Yeah. Are you okay?" "Yeah." Hearing the dejected tone of his voice, Lois instinctively reached out to him, and took his hand. "Don't worry, Clark. It'll all work out." They started strolling slowly back to the apartment. "How do you know, Lois? I want to help, but I just can't" "Clark, if you want to help, then you will." "How can you be so sure?" "I know you, and I know Superman." "I don't feel like I know Superman. I wish I could believe you. Could you tell me about me, um, about him?" Lois smiled warmly at him. "I always thought that Superman's the kind of man who makes things happen. Sure, he's great looking, and he's good..." She jostled him with her hip, teasing him. He laughed, and she continued, "but what you notice most about him, is how you can count on him. I remember the first time..." As Lois continued talking, Clark was suddenly flooded with images of Lois, and of rescuing her. The memories were all coming back to him in a rush. Lois noticed his abstract expression. "Do you remember anything, Clark?" "Yeah, I think I do." "Great! Let's go tell your mom and dad." Lois started tugging at his hand impatiently. Clark stood fast. "I have something I want to say first." "What?" Clark turned to look Lois in the eyes. "Thanks." "For what?" "For whatever it is you've done for me that makes me feel as good about you as I do." The impatient expression melted from Lois's face. "Clark, whether or not this memory of yours comes back, I just want you to know, I think you're terrific." "Likewise." "I mean, I love you." "Like a brother?" "No." Clark looked at her quizzically. Was she actually saying what he thought she was saying? Or did she mean that she loved him like a friend? He reached over and cupped her cheek in his hand, in a gentle caress. "I'd better go." "I know." Lois turned her face slightly and tenderly kissed the palm of his hand. "But you have to promise me that you'll be careful, Clark. I don't want you to forget me all over again." "I don't think I could forget you again, Lois. And my heart never did forget you." They gazed into each other's eyes for a long moment, then Clark turned to start moving back to the apartment. Lois followed, slipping her arm around his waist. Back on the roof again, with her heart in her mouth, Lois watched Clark as he ripped open his shirt to reveal the Superman 'S'. She could only manage to say, "Wow!" after he spun in place completing the transformation from Clark Kent to Superman. He smiled at her warmly, flexed his knees, and was gone. Lois watched him disappear in the sky. She didn't know how, but she knew he would do it, he would save the earth - that was a given - and then he would fly back to her. They had too much unfinished business for this to end any other way. Martha and Jonathan headed back into the apartment to wait, but Lois settled down on the roof. When he was done, when he came back, he would find her waiting for him. She had to wait for him; they had a lot to talk about. End __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yes ... as I understand it, when you dial a cell phone & hit "send", the signal goes out to a tower, and the first thing it does is check to see if the account is paid up If it doesn't recognize the phone's id, it won't complete the call. In your fanfic, of course, you can play this any way you want: if you want the person's phone to work, you can assume they're tapping into an established account (Innocent Bystander #1) -- but their phone number might not stay the same (it would be the same as IB #1, which may or may not be the same as Main Character from an alternate universe's number), so incoming calls would be trickier to arrange. Unless they also get IB #1's phone calls... make any sense? Or you could use this to explain why the phone doesn't work, but it looked like you were going the other way. Would it matter if the person's alternate persona existed and had a portable phone of his or her own? How about bus routes and street names -- could a person find his or her way easily in the sister city of an alternate universe?< It depends upon how closly the alt-world followed Horton's Law of Parity. Divergent Events directly affect the parity/dis-parity of to convergant universes. (Convergant means that the two touched.) If a parallel universe is equal to the origin universe of an individual in all but one event the chances of dis-parity are small. However, the key is the change event and it's temporal signature. If the event is taking route one to work instead of route two on the morning of the convergance then parity is intact. (unless your alt-you was killed and you weren't!) If, on the other hand, the event is Rome developing the steam engine in 1000 BC the chances of dis-parity are almost certain. Given your question in light of the above Law, I would say...Yes, it would work. At least on the alt-world that we know about. As for the rest of your questions....(all answers based on the alt-world that we all know and love) >And, to take the questions further (this has nothing to do with the fic any more, but who cares!), would their fingerprints be identical?< Yes. > If some kind of security used voice i.d., could the alt-character pass it?< Yes. > Would Alt-Lois' car keys fit the lock and ignition of Lois' Jeep, and could alt-Clark use his apartment keys to get into Clark's apartment?< Very unlikely in the case of the Jeep. Enough temporally significant and divergent events has taken place in Lois' life to render it improbable in the extreme. The apartment though would be a yes. > Could a person from one universe use a dollar bill or a couple of quarters to buy a drink in the alternate universe, or would the money and coins look different, causing the person to be arrested for counterfeiting?< This is a tough one. In all probability the answer is that they would get away with it. Even with E.P. and C.H. as governmental officials the chances of significant departure from the expected norm would be very small. Now 25 to 50 years from now that could be a problem as the differing presidents come up for 'billage.' I just luvs wrapping my mind around a good trans-dimensional problem. I laughed through this part too, but it also reminded me of the communication Lois and Clark have with each other sometimes. Since Jonathon and Martha are obvious soul mates too, it makes sense that they sometimes communicate in the same way my favorite soul mates do. Thanks for expanding this one, and doing it so quickly. SUMMARY: Another story in our 'Unintentional Season'. In the midst of adjusting to the fact that Lois is having twins, Lois and Clark have to investigate a strange cult that apparently worships Superman as a god. _________________________ [zoomway] "Hey, hey," Superman said, pulling them apart. "Thanks, Lois...*and* Jimmy. I'll take a look, but..." "You have a feeling it might be a cover for something else." "Exactly," Superman nodded. "Wow," Jimmy whispered and rubbed his shin. "You're as good at that with Lois as CK is, Superman." "As good at what, Jimmy?" Lois asked, trying to sound casual. "That 'finish each other's thoughts' thing." Superman patted Jimmy's back. "I have an advantage over Clark. Didn't you know Kryptonians have psychic abilities?" "Oh..oh, yeah," Jimmy nodded. Superman winked at Lois. "Gotta fly." "I think we better get you to a doctor, Jimmy." "No, I'm okay," he said. "I just decided I'll stay a photographer. This investigative reporting stuff is too painful." Lois put an arm around him to escort him out. Clarissa followed behind contritely. * * * "Okay," Clark said, having changed into his regular clothes and re-entered the Planet. The city room was dark and the night staff was on the other floor preparing the morning edition. "Let's see what's in Metropolis tonight that won't be here any other time." He booted his computer and waited. * * * Centennial Park was teeming with white-robed fanatics chanting their mantra. Lois and Jimmy stood to the back as Clarissa began to sway with the other. Lois shook her head. "They look like a field of ragweed on a windy day." Jimmy sighed. "I never got a robe. Probably won't get a hot dog either." Lois smiled and was about to respond, when Jeremi-El, the great leader himself, took his place on the base of the commemorative statue. Flashlights were held aloft like candles, since the permit expressly forbid candles. "Followers!" he said, his arms outstretched. "We are here, from all over Metropolis, and perhaps soon from all over the world, this planet, our home Mother Earth, to celebrate ..." he paused for effect, "The Angel of Krypton!" The mass of terry cloth-clad humanity let out a deafening cheer. * * * * * * The van turned off the main freeway and onto the access road, then took the little used Lethe extension. It lumbered along until a large branch seemed to fall from nowhere directly in its path. The van swerved, and though the wheels were spinning, there was no forward momentum. The woman behind the wheel shut off the engine and sighed. Taking a flashlight from the dashboard, she got out and swept the light towards the branch. It seemed she had clearly missed it. She then crouched down and swept the light beneath the van. She straightened immediately and began to run when she caught sight of two red boots. Like the van, she found her forward momentum halted as a gust of wind passed her ear and solidified in front of her as Superman. "Car trouble?" he asked flatly. "Uh ... yes," the woman replied. "I was running for help." "Well, since I'm here," Superman said, and began escorting the woman back towards the van, "maybe I can find the trouble." The woman resisted. "That's okay, Superman. I'm sure you've got more important things to do." "Nope, not at the moment, though I do have an appointment at ten." The woman swallowed. "Ten o'clock?" "Mm hm." He nodded and opened the back of the van. "You know some people load down the backs of these things with too much weight." The woman folded her arms as Superman extracted a tray of uncut diamonds. "This isn't my van." "Really?" Superman asked and glanced at her attire. "Well, technically, since the words 'Hilton Hotel' are still visible, I'd say it isn't your robe either." "Very funny," she sneered. "What tipped you off?" "Apparently there's someone in Gotham City who keeps a close watch on crime, and since the Gotham Jewelers truck was found abandoned and its driver unconscious ..." "But how did you link it to me?" Superman smiled. "Let's just say a little bat told me." * * * * * * Lois plugged her ears as another deafening cheer erupted. Jimmy reached into the jeep behind them, fetched out his camera and began to take pictures. The flash did not go unnoticed by Jeremi-El. He saw Jimmy, a young man he could have sworn he'd left trapped in the basement. "Followers," Jeremi-El continued, as he kept his eyes on Jimmy. "It seems we have some non-believers among us tonight." Lois looked around. "Don't bother," Jimmy whispered. "I think he means us." The crowd, as if of one mind, turned and faced Jimmy and Lois. "I think you're right, Jimmy. No hot dogs for either of us." Jimmy stepped protectively in front of Lois as the crowd moved forward. He swallowed. "Isn't this usually where Superman swoops in and saves you?" he whispered over his shoulder. Lois looked skyward. A robed figure floated above the crowd. "Yeah," she whispered back. "But he can get kind of theatrical sometimes." "He's here!" Clarissa squealed and pointed to the robed figure. "He's one of us!" The crowd looked up and then fell to their knees in unison and began to chant again. "Oh, brother," Lois said. "This is worse than a Braves game." Superman alit atop the statue and removed the robe. "I borrowed this from a follower named Glori-El who is now in police custody," he said, and let the robe fall from his hand. "It seems she couldn't attend the rally this evening since she was robbing a shipment of uncut diamonds en route to Gotham City." Lois smiled in admiration. "Not bad. We may get those hotdogs after all." "Going somewhere, Cousin Jeremi-El?" Superman asked, as the cult leader began to book. Superman flew down just in time for Jeremiah to run into him. The fearless leader of the faithful fell into the picnic table, knocking the contents to the ground. He lay dazed momentarily among the weenies and buns. Superman helped Jeremiah up by the scruff of his robe. "You'll be happy to know that the Metropolis prison has a nice chapel." A confused member of the flock stepped forward. "Are you saying this was just a front for a ... a heist!" Superman nodded. "I'm afraid so." "I know most of you are disappointed," he said as many of the followers turned their righteous wrath towards Jeremiah and began pitching their flashlights at him. Superman stood in front of the former cult leader. "I'm not a god or an angel," he said, "I'm just someone who wants to help," and handed the fallen leader over to two of the police officers sent to the park for crowd control. Jeremiah seemed grateful to be under guarded escort. Superman drifted upward. "If you really want to follow Superman, then help others." Lois smiled. It was speech time, but she didn't mind. She sort of loved that. "Your robes would be appreciated at the homeless shelters in Metropolis, and that temple would make a nice recreation facility for kids who have no other place to go." "You can put the robes next to my jeep," Lois offered. "My husband and I can deliver them to the shelters." The crowd, though still downhearted, began to form a line, looking rather like moles who had finally come into the daylight. They passed by the jeep one by one placing their robes on the ground beside it. Most of them kept moving on, leaving the park, the cult, and a little bit of humility behind. Others, though, took the time to shake Superman's hand and thank him for waking them from a trance they felt somewhat ashamed they'd let themselves fall into. As the crowd thinned out, Superman approached Jimmy and Lois, his hands behind his back. "Thanks for volunteering your help, Lois." She smiled. "Any time, Superman." Superman brought his hands from behind his back. "Here's a couple of hot dogs I was able to keep from hitting the ground." Jimmy grabbed one eagerly. "Man, you *are* psychic." "Jimmy, would you mind driving my jeep back?" Lois asked, handing him the keys. "I'm going to get a ...follow up story from Superman, and then have him fly me home." "Sure thing, Lois," Jimmy said. "Oh, if CK is there when I return your jeep, you want me to tell him you'll be home soon?" Lois smiled crookedly. "Sure, Jimmy. If Clark's home, by all means, tell him." "No, problem," Jimmy replied as he closed the door. Lois and Clark watched as he drove away. "You know," Clark said, "I could fly home real quick, and take your message >from Jimmy." "Cute," she smiled and then looked around. "Everyone gone?" Clark nodded. "They've all drifted off. I overheard talk about going to a bar and...washing their sins away." Lois laughed and hooked her arm into his. "That was a nice speech you gave." "Thanks," he said as they strolled, but his voice sounded distracted. Lois swallowed a bite of her hot dog. "I guess this was all kind of scary?" "Huh? Oh, a little, but it made me think of what Wells said about our descendants." "That they'd form Utopia." "Yeah," Clark said, and then turned to face Lois. "You don't think it would be anything like this, do you? I mean worshippers, and statues, and..." "No," Lois laughed. "Your mom raised you right, and we'll raise our kids right. If any of them comes home wanting to be a god or rule the world, they'll have such a spanking coming." Clark grinned. "Right. You'll tan their hides like cheap leather." "What?" Lois said, and finished off her hot dog. Clark just laughed. "Never mind, honey. Still hungry?" he asked as Lois licked some mustard from her fingers. She nodded. "How'd you guess?" "I'm psychic," he smiled. "Plus I could really go for a large pepperoni pizza." She smiled up at him, and drew her finger lightly across his mouth and down his chin. "'Desires of the flesh.' Could I tempt you with anything else?" "Oh, yeah." He smiled back at her. "You know me, Lois. I'm no angel." Lois and Clark laughed as they disappeared arm-in-arm into the darkness. SUMMARY: Another story in our 'Unintentional Season'. In the midst of adjusting to the fact that Lois is having twins, Lois and Clark have to investigate a strange cult that apparently worships Superman as a god. _________________________ [zoomway] Lois sighed loudly. "Yes, Clark. In my current condition I can always disguise myself as a sidewalk Santa. I just need a bell and a donation kettle...oh, and if you can spin the Earth around to December, that would help a lot." Clark laughed. "Okay, okay, I was a little..." "Over-protective?" Clark nodded. "But I got that way through experience." Lois softened and stroked his cheek. "I know. You go do that 'hover around the building and x-ray' thing, and I'm going to do some background checks on that handful of followers who were locked up." "Good plan," Clark said, gave Lois a quick kiss and vanished through the double window. Lois shook her head as she opened her case and took out her notes. "He's still got it," she said and began scanning the names on the list. * * * Jimmy rubbed the back of his neck. He was living a nightmare he had suffered shortly after breaking up with Clarissa. Being locked in Purgatory with her waiting to be judged and not caring if he was sent to Heaven or Hell, just so long as Clarissa was going in the opposite direction. But she was his only hope of getting out, so he had to try something. Jimmy took a deep breath and bracing himself against all repulsion impulses, looked at Clarissa adoringly. "You know, I think this AOK thing has ... matured you, Clarissa. You could easily get into the Ace o' Clubs without being carded now." Clarissa snapped out of her beatific gaze. "You think so? It's not just my new lip gloss?" "No, not at all. In fact," he said as he nuzzled her neck, "you're r...r... really getting to me." Clarissa nuzzled back. "Well, I guess I never really got over you, Ja...Jimmy. You always had that handsome jaw line." Jimmy worked his jaw back and forth and temporarily got lost in the moment. "Some say my jaw is a lot like Superman's." [Melisma] Clarissa giggled and caressed his cheek. "I... wow... could you be related to him?" Jimmy fought the urge to bolt. "Uh... not a chance..." How had they gotten on *this* conversational path? He tried to remember his primary mission as an investigative reporter. "Er, Clarissa, sweetheart..." He managed not to gag at the endearment. "Tell me more about Jeremi-El. He seems like such a *fascinating* person..." * * * Superman, in the sky over Metropolis, was carefully scanning the city for the cult headquarters. If Lois' instincts were right and Jimmy *was* in trouble, he was willing to bet these wackos were behind it. He was thinking of so many questions to ask this Jeremi-El that he almost missed hearing the voices below him. As soon as they registered, he doubled back and located the building. Hovering quietly above it, he listened more intently. [kell-y] After looking over some over her notes, Lois decided to head over to the police station to see if they had any more information. As she walked in the station she saw Inspector Henderson and Captain Maggie Sawyer discussing something about the cult members who were in the holding cell. [Eraygun] Lois waddled over to the two police officers. "For once I'm actually glad to see you, Lane," Henderson said with a smirk. Lois rolled her eyes good-naturedly. "Well, will wonders never cease." "We've been trying to reach you or Kent at the Planet for over an hour," Maggie interjected. "Oh, really? Why?" "One of our guests down in the holding cell has decided to sing, but only if you are there." Lois raised one eyebrow. "Then we'd better take him up on the offer, before he loses his voice." * * * "So exactly what is it you want to tell us, Mr. ...?" "John. They call me Brother John-El back at the Temple." "All right, then. What is it you want to talk about, John-El?" The huge man fidgeted in his chair and stared in silence at Lois for a few minutes. "Hello, is anyone home?" Lois said with exasperation as she waved her hand in front of his face. "Oh I'm sorry. I just never expected to be so close to someone so close to the great one, the AOK. It's such an honor," he said sincerely and bowed his head. Lois eyed the man carefully. "Well, that's right. I am close to him. So close in fact that I know that he would *want* you to talk to me. So why don't you tell me what's on your mind." [chrispat] John-El squirmed in his seat and eyed the interested onlookers. "Do they have to be here?" Lois glanced at Henderson, who nodded. "I'm afraid so. You are in jail, you know." John-El looked down at his hands and sighed heavily. "Yeah. I guess I am." After a moment he brightened. "Does that make me a martyr?" Lois rolled her eyes. "If you want to be. Now what did you want to tell me?" He leaned forward and whispered, "Tell the AOK that his day is at hand." Lois blinked. "The AOK?" "You know. Superman." "Oh, right. His day?" He leaned even closer. "Soon he will take his place as leader of the world. Only he has the wisdom and the power to overthrow the corruption that infests our planet. Tell him that his followers are gathering." He sat back apparently satisfied with this pronouncement while Lois gaped at him. After a moment Lois gathered her scattered wits. "Um, and just where did you get this information...and where is this gathering going to take place?" John-El straightened up. "That is all I am prepared to say. I am ready for my martyrdom." He turned his attention to Henderson. "You may start now." [zoomway] "Okay," Henderson shrugged. "Martyrdom here means you get to scrub the toilets in the drunk tank," he said and helped the cuffed "martyr" to rise. "I'll see if I can find a toothbrush." Lois stepped out of the holding cell into the room where Maggie had been listening. "Okay, spill," she said flatly. "I couldn't catch everything he said." Lois shook her head. "I don't think catching it helps. He said they're preparing a big rally. Didn't say where or when." Maggie tapped a pencil against her cheek. "Maybe it does," she said and walked to a map mounted on the rear wall. "You can't hold any kind of gathering in a public place in Metropolis...well, not of significant size, without a permit from the city." "Let's face it," Lois sighed. "One reason some of them are in jail is because the law didn't mean much to them." "True, Lane," Maggie acknowledged. "But kooks and cults learn from their mistakes. We got a request for a permit for a huge rally to be held in Centennial Park. They wanted the Metro Dome, but objected to the rental price." "When?" "Tonight. Ten o'clock. Estimated run time on the permit ..." Maggie said, as she glanced at her notes," ...three hours." Lois tapped Maggie's arm. "Thanks, I've got to run." Maggie put a restraining arm on her shoulder. "You're not going to try anything...crazy, are you, Lane?" "Geez," Lois moaned as she fished out her car keys. "First the whole world knows I love chocolate and now this." Superman reclined on the roof of the AOK temple, chin resting on the palm of his hand as he x-rayed down into the basement. Watching Jimmy and Clarissa, he'd occasionally burst into laughter, disturbing the pigeons sharing the rooftop with him. He knew he should just bust in and rescue Jimmy, but he felt his young friend needed to fully experience the pitfalls of investigative reporting a bit longer. Jimmy had moved, via strong gluteus muscles, to the far end of the basement, but Clarissa, on hands and knees, had pursued him and was back in his face. "Clarissa, this is real exciting, but I'd rather know about Jeremi-El...not that the story you told about your Barbie and Ken fantasy thing wasn't ...er...interesting." Clarissa crumpled, dejected. "Okay, he's our leader, he knows the way, the truth, and...we're having a big rally tonight in Centennial Park." "Oh, well, see, that's really interesting, and Jeremi-El will be there...doing what, exactly?" "Preaching the gospel of AOK, inviting others from all over the country to join us, and starting the weenie roast." "Cool," Jimmy smiled. "When's the rally? I'd hate to miss hot dogs...and the gospel." "It's at ten tonight, so we still have an hour to ourselves," she said, rubbing her nose against Jimmy's. That was all. "Help! Superman!" Clark sighed. "Show time," he said, and flew down to the street level, ripped the heavy door from its hinges, and broke through the trapdoor to the basement. He resisted the urge to say, "Ta-da!" and simply stood there, Superman-ish, with his arms folded. "Thank God," Jimmy whispered. "Now you're catching on, Jimmy," Clarissa said, her starstruck eyes riveted on The Angel. Superman offered his hand to Jimmy and helped him up. "Are you okay, Jimmy?" "Give me a few days to answer that one, Superman." Superman grabbed Clarissa and Jimmy and floated them up through the basement floor. Lois was standing there waiting. "Love what you've done to the place, Superman," she said, noticing the broken doors. "Thank you, Lois," he said, again having to tug his cape away from Clarissa. "There's a big rally of the faithful starting in Centennial Park in about an hour," Lois said. Jimmy's 'Supermanly' jaw dropped open. "You already know? I went though all of *that* for nothing?" "What's *that* supposed to mean?" Clarissa asked angrily, and kicked Jimmy in the shin. In the midst of adjusting to the fact that Lois is having twins, Lois and Clark have to investigate a strange cult that apparently worships Superman as a god. _________________________ [kell-y] * * * Jimmy was glad when the service was over. He hated long speeches. Clarissa grabbed his arm and pulled him to the front to meet their leader. "Hello and welcome," the man said. "Have you come to join us in the enlightenment?" "Ah...ah...yes," Jimmy stuttered, barely able to think. "Listen. Another one of our brothers have come to join us," the speaker announced to the group. "Welcome, brother," the congregation chimed in chorus. "Now we shall start the initiation ceremony," the leader said. [chrispat] *** Lois shifted in her chair for the tenth time in as many minutes. Clark glanced at her with concern and reached out a hand to caress her cheek. "Are you okay, honey?" Lois leaned into his hand, then turned her head to gently kiss his palm. "I'm fine, sweetheart, but these kids of yours are turning somersaults." Clark glanced down and saw the cloth of Lois' blouse rippling. He placed a hand on the cloth and grinned as he felt his children moving. "Lively, aren't they?" Lois scowled. "That may be funny to you, buster, but you're not the one getting bruised ribs." Clark was immediately contrite. "Honey, you know I would take your place if I could." Lois' heart melted at the look in his eyes, and she covered his hand with hers. "I know you would, but it's okay. I'm just tired. I like feeling them move." Clark looked a bit doubtful. "Are you sure? I mean, they don't kick harder than normal babies, do they?" Lois laughed. "How would I know? As far as I'm concerned they *are* normal babies. You were a normal baby, weren't you?" Clark frowned again. "Well, that's what my mom says, but would she really know?" Lois rolled her eyes. "Clark! I trust your mom and besides, you weren't the only baby she ever was around, right?" Clark relaxed a bit. "You're right, but I can't wait for this to be over. You know I can't help worrying about you. I love you." Lois smiled. "I know," she said softly and pulled him down for a kiss, just as the phone rang. [zoomway] Clark reached for the phone, but Lois placed her hand over his and tipped her head toward her nameplate. He grinned and bowed, handing the receiver to Lois. "City desk, Lois Lane. Can you speak up, I can barely...oh, Jimmy...where? Okay, we'll be waiting," she said and hung up the phone. "It was Jimmy." Clark smiled. "I gathered that. He got something?" Lois extended an arm to Clark. It was now their signal for help-me-get-out-of-this-chair. He helped his wife up and handed her purse to her. "And we're meeting him where?" he asked as they headed for the elevator. "A cute place on Hyperion...you're driving." * * * Jimmy made his way to the large door, but found Jeremi-El blocking his path. "Who were you phoning, brother James?" "I...well...phoning?" Jimmy swallowed audibly. He'd thought no one was a worse liar than CK until that very moment. "Yes, brother. I saw you with a cell phone." "Oh, right, yeah. Well... (lie!) ... I called... (geez!) ... the Planet." He was now worse than Homer Simpson. "Ah, yes, the Daily Planet. I believe Clarissa mentioned you before and that you worked there." Jimmy nodded. "I had to call in and let them know I was on my way back," he said, and decided false bravado would do for him what lying obviously could not. He stepped past Jeremi-El. "They're expecting me. I'll be back for the next meeting. Wouldn't want to miss ... robe-giving day..." he said, and then hurried out the door. Jimmy ran up the alley. Seeing traffic and passersby was reassuring. Locked in the AOK hallowed hall of Superman purity had made him feel isolated from the real world. Well, as real as Metropolis tended to get. He had just about reached the corner when everything went black. Painfully so. [Melisma] * * * As the jeep pulled into their parking spot outside the townhouse, Lois scanned the street for Jimmy. "How long could it take him to get here," she groused as Clark came around to her side of the vehicle, opened her door and gently helped her out onto the sidewalk. Clark used his super-vision to scan places she couldn't. "I don't see him either, honey. Maybe he got caught in a traffic jam. Let's give him a little longer before we panic, hmm?" When they got inside, Clark made Lois sit down on the sofa, then went into the kitchen to find her a beverage. He had always loved doing little things for her, but it seemed that he was enjoying it more now that she was carrying his children, if that was possible. He thought back to the green reporter who had arrived in Metropolis five years ago with a dream of a normal life in his heart. And Lois had helped him achieve all of that - a career, a wife, and now a family. [kell-y] A few minutes later the phone rang and Clark got up to answer it. "Hello." * * * "Ouww..." Jimmy moaned, slowly opening his eyes. "What happened?" he asked the dark empty room. "Or where am I?" he added, reaching down for his cell phone and realizing it wasn't there. "With friends," a female voice replied. "Clarissa?" Jimmy said in surprise. [Eraygun] "That's right, James," Clarissa's voice said soothingly. "We wanted to stop you from making a serious mistake." "Oh, geez. Look, Clarissa, you don't understand. I've got to get back to the Planet ... my job ..." "Is really unimportant, James. All that matters is the AOK. We all understand that, and soon you will too." "Come on, Clarissa! You used to think Superman was a ... a tool of the corporate power structure, and was causing the destruction of the ozone layer." Clarissa shrugged. "I was misguided then. But then I found Jeremi-El and he showed me the way. He can do the same for you." "But-" "I was skeptical at first, too, but it just takes a little time. Once you're among the faithful all your old concepts will fade away and be replaced by inner peace and joy in the righteousness of the AOK." "But I-" Don't worry, James. Everything will be just fine." * * * "Look, Jeremiah, I'm not so sure bringing that kid back here was a good idea." Jeremiah looked up from his desk and coolly regarded the tall willowy blonde wearing a tight formfitting jumpsuit instead of the loose robes of the cult members. "Gloria, you worry too much. We've got it made. We have hundreds of sucke -- I mean followers in this city. Our numbers are growing bigger everyday. It's going just like I planned." He enthusiastically rubbed his hands together. "Yeah, sure," Gloria replied sarcastically. "Trust me kid, we are going places this time" Jeremiah said as he rubbed his hand lasciviously up and down Gloria's arm. "Tonight, after your little 'expedition' I'll have the resources to really bring in the faithful. To make this movement a force to be reckoned with in this city and soon the entire nation! " Gloria rolled her eyes. "But what about the cops?" "After that little fracas downtown, every cop on duty will be at Centennial Park watching our rally just to make sure there's no trouble. By the time they discover what's happened you'll be safe, and back here at the Temple." Still worried, Gloria frowned and shook her head. "Okay, so maybe the cops won't be a hassle, but aren't you forgetting something else?" "What?" "How about your so-called Angel of Krypton, Superman?" "Don't worry babe, I've spent the last year studying that big blue boy scout's psychological makeup." Jeremiah said with a smirk. "Unless I miss my guess this whole thing probably has him so spooked he'll be at the rally too. Keeping an eye on us." "But..." "And if all else fails we've now got an insurance policy in the form of our latest convert." "You mean that flake Clarissa's ex-boyfriend?" "Her ex-boyfriend is Jimmy Olsen, a close friend of Superman, my dear." "Which means?" Jeremiah grinned wolfishly. "Superman would never let anything happen to him, so even if tonight's festivities aren't sufficiently distracting, I still think we have it made in the shade." [chrispat] * * * Clark frowned into the phone as he listened. "No, Perry. We haven't seen him either. You say you tried his cell phone and it didn't connect? Maybe he forgot to turn it on." He nodded unconsciously as Perry continued. "Okay. We'll give him a little longer, but if he doesn't turn up soon, I'll see if I can get Superman to look for him... Okay. We'll keep you informed." Lois levered herself off the sofa as he hung up. "I don't like this, Clark. He's in trouble. I know it." "We don't know that, honey. He's just a little late." "If he's anywhere near that psycho Clarissa, he's in trouble." Clark ran his fingers through his hair. "You're probably right," he sighed. "What do you suggest we do?" "What you told Perry. You go look for him as Superman and I'll..." "You'll what? Go rushing out and get yourself in trouble too?" SUMMARY: Another story in our 'Unintentional Season'. In the midst of adjusting to the fact that Lois is having twins, Lois and Clark have to investigate a strange cult that apparently worships Superman as a god. _______________________ [Eraygun] It was well past midnight when Clark finally landed with a soft thud on the patio of the townhouse. Spinning into a tee shirt and jeans as he entered the house through the kitchen door, he began to float silently upstairs when he noticed the flickering light of the television in the living room. Entering the room he found Lois stretched out on the couch staring at the screen. "Honey, what are you still doing up? It's after midnight." "I know, but I couldn't sleep and I decided to watch a little TV," Lois replied as she sat up and motioned at the screen. Clark stared at the television. "Star Trek?" he said with a grin. Lois gently rubbed her protruding stomach. "Well, I want the kids to be exposed to the classics early." Clark chuckled and then raised one eyebrow. "That's the original series. I thought you were a Next Gen fan." "Not really. I had this thing for Captain Kirk ..." "You had a crush on him?" "Actually I saw him as more of a role model." "I can believe that." Clark joined Lois on the couch and she snuggled into his lap. "I remember this one," he said after a few minutes. "They run into that alien who thinks he's the Greek god Apollo." Lois nodded. "I used to think the premise was pretty farfetched, but now I'm not so sure." "What do you mean, honey?" "Think of it, Clark. If you had landed on Earth a few thousand years ago, people would have thought *you* were some kind of god." Clark shrugged. "Maybe. Or maybe they would have considered me some kind of monster." "Nah," Lois said teasingly as she gently framed his face in her hands. "With your looks, *definitely* a god. This is a face that belongs on Mount Olympus." Clark removed one of her hands from his cheek and kissed the palm. "Only if you're there too, sweetheart. The only place I belong is with you."" [Ckgroupie] * * * "He came to rescue us! Look at his strength, his power, his nobility!" The speaker's voice almost stuttered with excitement. "You think this is all for nothing? You think this is all without a purpose?" The audience hung on every word from his lips and waited in breathless anticipation. He was a good speaker, passionate and convincing, and when his black, glittering eyes focused on the people in front of him, they felt drawn into the power of his words and sometimes it was as if they fell into a kind of trance. They weren't so many yet, Clarissa thought when she looked around, but she noticed with a satisfied smile that the number of people who had come to listen had increased again. Clarissa herself had heard of the meetings that took place here only four days ago. She had been so foolish! She had mistrusted the reports of her friends at first and even laughed about them. But only one meeting had opened her eyes and she now knew that there was nothing to laugh about. She watched as the speaker turned to a sculpture that had been hidden under a gold and red cloth. He tugged at the cover and smiled as the audience sighed loudly in awe. "I'm happy to be the first to show you our new altar," he announced proudly. "And I dare say that the artist, who is one of us, by the way," he nodded to a shyly blushing young man at the corner of the podium, "really did a wonderful job." Delighted applause came from the audience and as Clarissa cheered with the others for the artist, her eyes couldn't leave the sculpture for a second. The picture of her hero. Her god. Superman. [chrispat] * * * Lois sat in the jeep taking notes as she watched her husband cope with yet another emergency. This time he was helping defuse a hostage situation at the bank around the corner from the Planet. She shook her head and sighed. Wouldn't these idiots ever learn that they couldn't get away with a bank robbery with Superman around? Shifting uncomfortably in her seat as she felt the babies start a soccer game under her ribs, she decided to get out of the car. As she opened the car door, a van pulled up in front of the jeep and a group of strangely dressed people tumbled out. They quickly formed a circle and raising their white-robed arms began to chant what sounded like a football cheer. "Go, Kal. Go, Kal." The bank doors opened and Superman strode out with a perpetrator hanging from each hand. As he handed them over to the waiting police, the strange group rushed up to him and fell to their knees in front of him, crying in unison, "Hail, oh Great Kal-El." Clark blinked and backed up a step. "Um....me?" One of the group rose to her feet and Clark recoiled as he recognized her. "Clarissa???" [zoomway] "Great," Lois whispered as she moved closer. Every time a crazy zealot organization formed, Clarissa was leaping to be first in line. "Excuse me," she said as she watched Clarissa kissing the hem of Superman's cape. "Who are you ... people?" she asked, deciding to default on 'people' rather than 'howling loons.' A mousy woman, eyes made large by thick lenses, turned to face Lois, then pointed to Superman. "He's AOK," she whispered. Lois shrugged. "And he looks pretty hot in tights, too." "Blasphemer!" the woman hissed. "He is *pure*. He has no desires of the flesh!" Lois folded her arms over her large stomach. "Oh, really?" "He's AOK...Angel of Krypton!" Lois rolled her eyes. "Oh, so you're a cult." "Cult?!" a young man said, also turning to face Lois. His robe opened slightly, revealing his faded 'Save Space Above and Beyond' tee shirt. "We're a *legitimate* group of the faithful!" "You're a cult," Lois insisted as she watched her husband tug his cape out of Clarissa's hands. "Please, everyone," Clark finally said, unable to take his horrified gaze >from Clarissa who kept mumbling "I touched him...touched him...I'm blessed." "I'm not an angel, or a god, and I..." He paused, tipping his head to the side. "I have to be going. There's a fire on Bleakman." He flew swiftly from the scene as the AOK wave of "Go, Kal!" started anew. Lois shook her head and walked over to Clarissa. "Okay, you can stop trembling. His celestial aura is clear across town by now. Tell me what the hel --" Lois glanced at the throng of robed worshippers. "What the *heck* this is all about?" [Misha] Clarissa shook herself out of her trance and batted away the fawning of the cultists next to her when she heard Lois' demand. "It is the Namer!" Clarissa's hand shot up in the air and her finger slowly descended until Lois was staring at it as if it were a loaded gun. Her eyes crossed and then refocused on Clarissa. Around her, the enrobed throng began several separate chants. "We're not worthy!" "Give me a name!" "Name me as you named the caped one!" Lois backed up a step. Clarissa's finger never wavered, and Lois had a sinking suspicion that if she ever deigned to touch a gun, she'd be a crack shot as well as a crackpot. "Honor the Namer, for she met him first, and she revealed his holy purpose to us all!" Lois continued to back slowly towards the jeep, her hands going to her belly as the people around her began acting like Ewoks meeting their first droid. "Hey, hey! Let's keep it orderly here!" A uniform stepped in front of her, and she scooted into the front seat of her car as the police started to herd the cultists away from the scene. Some of the group seemed to be objecting, but Lois' attention had already turned to what this might mean to her and Clark. Lois braced her hands against the wheel as her mind turned. There was no way on this planet *or* Krypton that she'd manage more than two seconds undercover in the cult. And Clark would either squirm like a worm on a hook or start to resemble a neon sign from blushing... no, there was only one person she could get to do her dirty work for her on this story. She picked up her cell phone and dialed. "Jimmy?" [Melisma] The Bleakman fire was quickly extinguished, and there were no casualties, thank goodness. Clark accepted the firefighters' thanks, then shot off into the sky. As he soared over Metropolis, his mind returned to the encounter with that strange group outside the bank earlier. Who were they? And more importantly, who did they think *he* was? His reporter's mind kicked into gear as he enumerated the few facts he had been able to glean. They didn't seem to be hostile, unlike some other groups that seemed to be fixated on Superman. What had that woman called him? The Angel of Krypton... Other words came back to him... 'pure', 'blasphemer', 'a group of the faithful'. Why on earth would they think he was someone to venerate? Why the religious imagery? Clark decided to do a little investigating - he *was* an investigative reporter, after all. Turning around, since during his musings he had flown halfway out into the Atlantic Ocean, he returned to Metropolis. Touching down in an alley outside the main police precinct, he spun into his journalist's clothing and entered the building. Ten minutes later, he walked into the holding area, but before he could say anything, the cult members fell prostrate on their knees. "Welcome, oh great husband of the Namer, friend of the almighty Kal-el," they murmured. [kell-y] * * * "Huh, you want me to do what? Isn't that Clark's area?" Jimmy squirmed in his chair while listening to Lois on the phone. "Come on, Jimmy, you know you've always wanted to go undercover," Lois said, pulling her jeep into the Planet's parking garage. "Yeah, you're right. Where do you think they are now?" he asked, standing up and grabbing pen and notepad. Lois stepped out of her jeep and headed inside, wondering the same thing and also where her husband was. "Don't know. Things got a little crazy after Superman left and there was a shoving match with the police. I think they took some into custody ... maybe you can start there." "Okay, I'm on it," Jimmy said, hanging up and heading out the door. SUMMARY: Another story in our 'Unintentional Season'. In the midst of adjusting to the fact that Lois is having twins, Lois and Clark have to investigate a strange cult that apparently worships Superman as a god. _________________________ [Eraygun] Clark shook his head slowly as he left the holding cell section of the jail. "Sheesh," he murmured under his breath. "Have any luck, Kent?" Clark turned to face Maggie Sawyer, head of Metropolis's Special Crimes Unit. "Not really, Captain. All I got were blank stares and beatific smiles. It was *scary*." "Hey, that's an improvement ... at least they were willing to smile at you. My people got bupkiss when they tried to interview them." "Any ideas what this is all about?" Clark asked. "I just know this cult started up a couple of months ago. Right around the time Superman had that little... interlude as Lord Kal-El. Remember it?" Clark grimaced a little and nodded. "It's been growing since then, slowly at first, though they've been more visible lately. They haven't been mixed up in anything illegal but..." "But you suspect that they might be engaged in something or planning it," Clark added. "How did you guess?" "They were only arrested for disturbing the peace, that's not the kind of thing the SCU is normally involved in." Maggie grinned. "Not bad, Kent. I see hanging around Lane has had an impact." "Well, I like to think we've changed each other." Maggie looked at Clark thoughtfully for a moment. "Yeah, I can see that too." "So, now that we've got that settled, exactly what do you think they're mixed up in, Captain?" [chrispat] Maggie grimaced. "We're not sure, but the rumored leader has had some shady dealings in the past and this religious fervor doesn't ring true. We've been trying to keep an eye on him, but haven't been able to get anyone into the cult yet." Clark raised an eyebrow. "What's his name?" "He's gone by various aliases in the past. Right now he's calling himself Jeremi-El. Claims he's a relative of Superman" Clark's other eyebrow rose. "A relative of Superman??" His thoughts raced, imagining all sorts of possibilities. "Um, thanks, Maggie. I'll see if Lois and I can find out anything from Superman. As far as we know, he doesn't have any relatives...at least not here on Earth." Twenty minutes later, Clark exited the elevator at the Daily Planet and looked for Lois. She wasn't at her desk, but he could hear her heartbeat and those of the babies somewhere in the building. He looked over his glasses and did a quick scan of the newsroom, finally catching sight of her coming out of Perry's office. Lois' face lit up as she caught sight of him, and she hurried to meet him as he came down the ramp to the newsroom proper. She hugged him and grabbed his arm, pulling him toward the conference room. "Perry just got the word on the Merriwethers for this year. Guess who was nominated for the third year in a row?" Clark drew her into a hug and grinned at her triumphant expression. "It wouldn't by any chance be that hot news team Lane and Kent, would it?" Lois leaned back in his embrace. "It most certainly would. The awards dinner is in three weeks, and he's almost positive our series on Morgan Edge's vendetta against 'you-know-who' is going to win." Clark kissed her quickly. "That's great, honey. 'You-know-who' thinks you deserve most of the credit." Lois smiled and patted his chest. "Well, thanks, but right now we have another problem. What did you find out about the cult?" "Not much. We need to get someone into that group, but I know you and I can't do it." Lois grinned happily. "Already taken care of. Jimmy's on his way." "Jimmy? But Clarissa knows who he is." "I know she does, Clark, but she's just vain enough to think he would want her back." Clark looked a bit dubious, but he knew better than to argue with Lois when it came to how women thought...especially someone like Clarissa. What a kook! [zoomway] Jimmy had paced outside the entrance of the AOK headquarters ...church, or whatever the organization called it, for the better part of an hour. He'd sent word to Clarissa that he was waiting outside, but nothing. He sighed, thinking back to his relationship with her. She'd taught him a valuable lesson. No matter how desperate for a date, there's always time for a mental health background check. Finally the heavy door swung open, and Clarissa stepped out. She looked at Jimmy with an expression that was difficult to describe. It was somewhat similar to how a princess might look at the royal gardener. "Hello, James," she said with full 'noblesse oblige' offhandedness. "Hey, Clarissa," Jimmy responded, and took little note of the robe attire. She had been chained to trees and bulldozers before, so this was actually ...sedate. "I hear you got...religion." Clarissa laughed...well, made the attempt. "No, James, I've reached enlightenment." She paused a moment in her rehearsed diatribe. "You could be one of us, you know," she said, and stepped closer. Jimmy hoped his flesh crawled quietly. "Well, I...I don't know, Clarissa. I don't usually wear robes ... maybe if your cul --group had leather jackets..." "James," she said, and placed her hands on his chest. "You have always been close to the Angel." "The angel? Oh, S..S..Superman?" He drew his head back until the brick wall stopped it. "That's his secular name, James." Jimmy, desperate to create breathable space between them, grabbed Clarissa's shoulders and held her out at arm's length. "You're right, I guess there is something kind of special about Su--the angel. I wonder why I never noticed before." "Exactly! Oh, I *knew* you would understand." Clarissa began backing with him towards the large door, which seemed to open of its own volition, or had an eye-trip beam like grocery stores. Either way, Jimmy passed through on his way to...enlightenment. [Melisma] As his eyes adjusted to the dim light inside the temple, Jimmy looked around cautiously. The interior was perhaps the size of a large living room, he estimated. A large picture of Superman was hung at the far end, and smaller pictures were on the other walls. Banks of candles, some lit, others dark, stood in front of the smaller shrines. They and the larger spotlight shining on the large picture were the only illumination. "That is Jeremi-El, the great Angel's relative and spokesman," Clarissa hissed into his ear. "Come listen to what he has to say, and I'll introduce you to him after service." She pulled him over to an empty spot next to the others, then sat cross-legged on the floor. Suddenly unsure of himself, Jimmy followed her example. * * * Back at the Planet Lois and Clark were working on their respective assignments while they waited for Jimmy to return. [Eraygun] "Any luck, sweetheart?" Clark asked as he joined Lois at her desk. "Not as much as I'd like." Lois looked up dejectedly from the computer screen. "I've confirmed Maggie's information that this cult seems to have started right after Superman made his appearance at the UN, though. In fact, some of Superman's so-called sacred teachings appear to come straight from that manifesto y --, I mean, he delivered." "Sheesh, I thought I burned all the copies of that." Lois sighed. "Well, their leader was able to get his hands on it somehow. It's pretty dry stuff," she smirked. "Good thing the Merriwether Committee didn't know it was yours, they might have withdrawn our nomination." Clark chuckled in response. "So have you been able to find out anything?" Lois continued. "Just some basic background information on Jeremi-El." Clark's mouth twisted with distaste as he said the name. "His real name is Jeremiah Phillips and he's **not** from Krypton ... unless some of the New Kryptonians settled in St. Paul, Minnesota." Lois laughed. "Anything else?" "Well, nothing really illegal in his background," Clark replied as he returned to his desk and scanned his computer screen. "But he's apparently been involved in fringe groups like this for years." "Really, like what?" Lois left her desk and perched on the corner of Clark's. Clark nodded. "In 1965 he called himself Raj Jeremiah and started something called the 'Far Eastern Institute for Inner Peace', in St. Paul. That closed around 1973 or so and the next time he resurfaced is the late 70's as Jeremy Phillips, the founder and chief spokesperson for PITS ---" "PITS?" "Positive Interrelation for Total Success. It was one of those self-help movements," Clark explained. "It was sort of big in the Midwest, but interest in it petered out in the mid-80's and after that Jeremiah left the Midwest and headed for..." "Let me guess," Lois interrupted, "California." "That's right, how did you know?" "It's the perfect place for a flake like him. So what was he this time? Some sort of New Age guru?" Clark grinned. "You're two for two honey. He was *Brother* Jeremiah, leader of the Temple of Enlightenment and Holistic Healing, specializing in meditation, healing crystals, and aromatherapy. Apparently he had lots of happy followers." "So why did he leave the West Coast?" "Well, about two years ago he was arrested for 'misappropriating' funds from his members. But for some reason none of his alleged victims were willing to testify against him so the charges were dropped." "And after that he turned up here?" Clark nodded. "And he's apparently been clean ever since." "If you can call what he's doing now a legitimate activity," Lois added. Clark pushed back from his computer, stood up and combed his fingers through his hair. "Unfortunately I haven't been able to come up with *why* he's decided to focus in on Superman. What he might have to gain out of all this." Lois moved closer to Clark and wrapped a comforting arm around his waist. "And that's got you worried, doesn't it?" "Does it ever. I don't know which is worse - someone like Edge who wants to destroy Superman or these people." God knows, during "All Shook Up," I wanted to bop Lois over the head for looking away right when Clark switched his glasses. I know Clark's glasses are *the* symbol of his Clarkness, and that, once removed, all things should be instantly revealed. However, I would have liked to have seen Lois say, "N-a-a-h," move away and then quickly look back -- as if expecting to catch Superman in all his red, blue, and yellow glory, or maybe as Peter Pan, or the Tooth Fairy. I would have liked to have seen her go to her desk, pick up a manila folder, maneuver it in front of her face, lower it like a fan, close one eye and squint.... In other words, play it up -- and draw it out -- *and then say,* "She couldn't believe it...." > All sorts of random thoughts floated through her head. didn't get amnesia from falling into a bunch of garbage cans in the > dark! > he keep the 'suits'? > > You know, this last thought really caught my imagination.... Now, here's a weird fanfic idea for you: What if Martha and Jonathan *were* really Lara and Jor-El? Immediately I thought, impossible! How do you explain their long history in the Smallville community? How do you explain the fact that they don't have powers? How do you explain why Martha and Jonathan look -- and probably are -- older than Jor-El and Lara? Not only that, they don't look much like Clark either. Well, it's an interesting premise and, after some hard thinking, I came up with a few answers. Anyway, I thank you, Irene, for doing such a fine job of rewriting this episode -- with the inclusion of Lois -- and for helping me to take my imagination out for an evening spin. At the time (the late 70's) it was not uncommon. I later met-up with someone that worked for Honda and they told me there were only about 8 different keys made for their cars and that was it. I only discovered it because my parking lot attendant unlocked my car for me and then discovered it wasn't my real key. It's interesting to see this topic crop up so many years later. Ghod, I feel my age. And as for other matching key situations, my parents twice had matching cars and NO matching keys. At one time they both had '54 Chevy's (1 a 2-door, 1 a 4 door) and then later had '60 Chevy's (1 a 2-door, 1 a 4 door), but, alas no key match. James and Kathy have touched on this already, but one aspect that hasn't been mentioned (so far, I think) is the "Branching" idea of parallel universes. Quantum mechanics speculation "predicts" (boy, there's an inappropriate word) that events will happen just about any way that they can in some parallel universe or other; what happens is that the timeline splits into multiple branches every time something occurs. A good example is rolling a die: if I do that, "branching" suggests that there are at least 6 possible parallel universes that are created, and maybe more (the die could fall off the table, or get hit by my cat's paw before it stops rolling, etc., etc.). What this means is that, as James said, the resemblance that one universe has to another has a lot to do with when the "split" occurred. In particular, if the two only split fairly recently (say, after Lois bought her Jeep), then yes, her keys will fit an "alternate" Jeep because they were the _same_ car and keys until the split. It works rather like this: ----- / / The timeline splits at an event. _Before_ that, ---------------< though, it's the _same_ timeline (car, keys, \ phone, etc.). \ ----- For more information on this sort of thing, try reading Larry Niven's short story "All The Myriad Ways". If nothing else, I guarantee the ending will creep you out. Things are a bit more complex if you're dealing with a known parallel universe like the TA/L&Cs one, in which the split took place some time ago (at the latest, when the AltKents were killed) but many events have subsequently been the same. This is just as possible under the branching concept as a wildly different history -- say, that of Randall Garrett's Lord Darcy series. (This is OT, but it really bugs me when people criticise Garrett for his "unrealistic" history from 1199 on, because if there _are_ parallel universes, there must be an infinite number of them, and hence he can choose any one he likes to write about. If history there was not what the critics expect after the specific changes that Garrett describes, tough! It happened differently there/then.) All of which means that you can do what you like as regards cell phones, keys, etc., because it could happen that way (and some other way in another universe). Yes, that was written after our exchange on the list (whistles innocently). In case anyone who hasn't read BBDF3 is wondering what we're talking about, here is the extract (don't worry, no spoilers otherwise): Lois's gaze fell on the travel device which Conor was still holding. "Why don't we send him back in time, to... say, some time in the Stone Age?" she suggested in very dry tones. Clark grinned; he loved it when Lois had those sort of ideas. "Hey, I'd love to! But remember when Wells left him in 1866 - he still managed to escape." "Yeah, I'd love to know exactly how he did that," Lois mused aloud. Laura strolled over to Conor and laid her hand on his arm, while looking thoughtfully at the other two. "You can say this is too Quantum Leap if you like, but... couldn't he have gone back to rescue himself?" Seeing Lois's disbelieving expression, she added, "Oh, don't ask me to explain how it's possible. I never could understand these time-travel paradoxes. But the sci-fi shows all tell me it can be done." "True," Conor agreed. "The only other solution I can think of is that a Tempus from another dimension rescued him." "Please!" Clark interjected. "I do *not* want to think that there's more than one of him!" "But isn't it a logical possibility?" Laura enquired. "I mean, why should there only be a Tempus in your world? From what HG Wells has told us, there is a Utopia in all our worlds eventually. So why not more than one Tempus?" Lois visibly shuddered. "I have no idea, Laura, but the Tempus who took me to the other Clark's universe was definitely the Tempus we met first in our world. And from what HG said, I think it's the same Tempus who interfered in your world nearly fifty years ago." > Phil, anuvver PhD, an' _not_ in social science -- I'm 'ard (science), I > am! ROFL!! SUMMARY: After an upsetting encounter between Lois and Superman, Clark clears things up to Lois about her and the big guy's relationship. Then they clear some things up about their own... ************************************************** NOTE: This is a short, WaFFy story, set mid-first or early second season. "Hey would you say whatever we're blanket friends. Can't stop what's coming, can't stop what is on its way." ~~ "Bells for Her," Tori Amos. BLANKET FRIENDS by Susan VanCott (Kirshnera@aol.com) Lois Lane felt a little light-headed as she walked into her apartment on the rainy evening, but she supposed that was still the after-effects of free-falling off of a seventeen story building. At least the nausea had passed away relatively quickly. She shuddered as she recalled how the icy-cold butterflies started in her stomach when she was near the edge. Then, when she was so close that she knew she was going to fall, how she'd reached out for anything, grasping air, and the panic raced through her body, erupting into a hysterical scream. After that, she could feel nothing... there was nothing solid around her, just the wind's teasing pressure, and the lack of control made her sick with fear. And she'd almost wished that she would hit the ground, just so that it were all over with. Then there was the hard feeling of strong, warm arms around her, and a sudden stop. Superman. She'd wrapped her arms around him as she always did, hanging onto him as tightly as she would a life preserver in a stormy sea. It wasn't that she'd been afraid he would drop her-- she trusted him enough not to be worried about that-- it was just that he felt strong and safe, and if she hadn't held on to him, she would have been trembling like a leaf. On the ground, she'd felt better, but her stomach had protested the abuse, and she had been afraid of losing her lunch right in front of Superman and everyone, and that would have been just too embarrassing for the imperturbable reporter. Fortunately, she didn't have to deal with that. And now, she tried to put the whole thing out of her head. It was one of those experiences that was too awful for people to remember, and she knew that by tomorrow she'd think it wasn't such a big deal. That was the way she'd always heard that childbirth was supposed to be. Hell when you're going through it, but hazy when you're looking back on it. She collapsed on the couch, dropping her shoes on the floor, and closed her eyes. She might have fallen asleep if not for a sharp rapping at her window. "It's unlocked," she said, not bothering to look. After all, what or who could it be besides Superman? "Lois?" "Hi." "Hi." "What's going on?" 'Why is he here?' she wondered. "Oh... nothing much. I just wanted to see if you were okay." 'Lame, Kent, lame. Better back it up.' "Ah, you seemed a little shaken up earlier." He'd noticed? Great. So much for her tough act. "Yeah, well, you know. It's like how you get shaky after a big presentation or something... nothing unusual." "Oh. Well, I..." He trailed off. Lois sat up. "Do you want some coffee or something?" 'Let's not waste the opportunity, hm?' He *should* be going. After all, Superman was just checking to see that she was okay... even if he *knew* that she was more or less fine... and had been that way the last seven times it had happened to her... But Clark Kent *was* rather a hopeless, pathetic fool in love, and that might have influenced the decision to visit. How could he turn down a reason to see Lois? And now, how could he turn down a reason to prolong that visit? Besides, coffee was nice, he told himself. "Sure." "Okay, I'll just be a second. Have a seat." Lois got up and went into the kitchen. Suddenly, she wasn't as tired as she had been when she'd walked in the door. Clark Kent would have offered to make the coffee. At least he would have walked into the kitchen with her. But while Clark Kent was a regular fixture who knew his way around Lois' kitchen, Superman was a guest. And so both of them were restrained to the living room. In a minute, Lois returned and sat next to him on the sofa. "So, uh, how was the rest of your day?" "Oh, not too bad," she replied. "Not very productive, I have to admit, but nothing awful happened." "Oh, well, that's nice." "Yeah. What about you? Anything exciting?" "No... not really. The usual stuff, you know... What?" He'd just noticed that Lois was grinning at his statement. "It's just... the usual stuff..." "Oh." "Doesn't seem so usual to me..." "Well... I'm not your usual guy." Not your usual guy... didn't that sound vaguely familiar? Had he said it before... during an interview, perhaps? Maybe it was just one of those creepy deja-vu things. "No, I guess you're not," she said, brushing the odd feeling off. "But then who's to say what's normal?" "Good point..." There was a short pause. "Superman?" "Hm?" "Thanks for saving me today. It's getting hard to count how many times over I owe you my life..." It was late, she was tired, and her brain was thrilled to realize just how close she was sitting to the man she loved. But whatever the reason, a sweet, sentimental note had crept into her voice. "I don't know what I'd do without you." Her tone was not lost on Superman, nor was the soft half-smile that made her look so gentle and inviting. He smiled in return, and took her hand in his. "You'll never have to find out, Lois, I promise." Lois' heart almost stopped beating at those words. Those were *commitment* words. Could he possibly mean... Was this it? Was this what she had dreamed of for so long? "Superman..." She leaned toward him, hardly realizing that she was doing so. He was quick to reciprocate, and in an interminable instant, their lips met. He lifted one hand and traced her jaw with his finger as his tongue pressed into her mouth, tasting her hungrily. She was soft, she was sweet... and she was Lois... Lois' arms slipped around his body, under his cape, pulling him closer. A moan escaped from somewhere deep in her throat. The sound was magnified a thousand times by acute hearing attuned to the woman in his arms, and exploded into his head. It was the sound he'd always ached to hear from her-- the sound of pleasure-- and his response to it was immediate and powerful. But somewhere in the part of his brain that was still working, he realized that if he didn't stop, and stop *now,* he wouldn't be able to. And if he didn't, Clark Kent's life would be completely worthless. And so, abruptly, he pulled away. Lois looked at him, her eyes dreamy and her smile dazed. Superman closed his eyes for a second. 'Don't look at me like that, Lois... Not at Superman...' "Superman? What's wrong?" "Lois... I... I have to go." He stood up and turned toward the window. "Is it an emergency? Is someone in trouble?" He glanced back at her. He couldn't lie. And he knew his eyes were revealing to her that there was no one in trouble... that he was just escaping. He knew what that would mean to her. "I'm sorry," he said softly, and flew out the window before he could see her face fall. Numbly, she stood and walked over to the window, shutting and locking it. He was gone. Not because someone else had needed him, but because he didn't want to be with her. No more teasing, no more second-guessing. He'd shown her exactly where he stood now... She knew she was going to cry, and she didn't even try to stop it. ************************** "Why are you ruining my *life?*" Clark angrily asked the blue-suited figure in the mirror. "Every time you get close to Lois, *I* get a little worse in her eyes. Stop encouraging her! For God's sake, stop acting so damn stupid! What right do you have to stab me in the back?" His voice got suddenly quieter. "I love her.... I love her so much, and it seems like no matter what I do, she doesn't feel the same way for me. You're all she cares about, all she thinks about... and I'm about ready to..." He was interrupted by someone knocking. Superman disappeared and Clark went to answer the door. "Lois?" "Hi, Clark... you have time for a movie?" Her eyes looked a little red, and her smile a little forced. "Sure... come in." Lois walked past him and sat down on the sofa, putting the movie she'd brought on the coffee table. This was much better than crying herself to sleep, she reasoned. And besides... she really wanted to see Clark... no, needed to see him. Calling or visiting Clark was by now almost an automatic response to anything that went wrong in her life, and this was no exception. Clark shut the door and turned toward Lois. It was obvious she'd been upset about what happened with Superman, but he was surprised to see her here. She was looking to Clark for comfort? Perhaps the whole situation wasn't playing out as awfully as he'd thought. He walked down the steps and sat next to her on the couch. Ever so slightly closer to her than Superman had been. "I brought 'First Knight.' Do you want to watch that?" "Sure, that sounds great." She stood up, put the movie in the VCR, then settled back down next to Clark. She picked up the remote and started the movie. "Oops, it's not rewound," she said, and stopped it. "Lois?" "Hm?" "What's wrong?" He had to ask the question, even though he already knew the answer. He had to bring up the subject. Since it was his fault she was hurting, it was his job to try and make her feel better. "What?" "Something's wrong, isn't it? You look upset." "Do I?" Her voice rose a little. "Yeah." "Well, that's just... I mean..." She sighed. "I don't..." He picked up the remote and shut the television off. "Hey," he said softly, daring to put his arm around her, "you can tell me." "Clark..." She sighed again, unconsciously cuddling up to him. "Have you ever been in love? I mean, really in *love*-- blind, stupid, crazy love." "Yeah," he admitted quietly. "Yeah, me too. Me too." She gave a rueful laugh. "Isn't it wonderful? I mean, here I am, Lois Lane, top reporter-- one of the top reporters, anyway-- in the world, rough, tough, daring... and head over heels in love with a guy who doesn't even care. You know, I thought for a minute... more than a minute, actually... that we had something. I thought, maybe... maybe this was different. Maybe this was *real.* Maybe I wasn't insane to fall for him. Maybe just this once, I'd finally gotten it right... "But I guess my relationship record still stands. I guess I was insanely arrogant to think that I could love him, and that he would love me in return. I guess... "Clark, he came to my apartment and said to me that he was always going to be there for me... maybe I just warped it to what I wanted to hear, but that sounded like such a wonderful promise... And then, he kissed me. I didn't start it, not completely, and he made no attempts to stop. Well, not right away. "All of a sudden, he just pulled back. He jumped up and told me he had to leave. I asked him if he had to go save someone, and he just looked at me... He didn't have to go rescue anyone. He just... didn't want..." At that point, Lois broke off, sniffling. Clark held her in his arms for a minute. "Lois," he murmured, his lips brushing the side of her head. It felt so natural, so impossible *not* to do... and Lois wasn't protesting. "Lois, I'm sure it's not what you think... not as bad as you think." "Clark, you don't..." "Shhh." He stroked her hair as she rested her head on his shoulder. "Yes, I do understand, a lot more than you think. Trust me. Superman... isn't quite who you think he is, but that doesn't mean he doesn't care for you." "How... how do you know that?" "I've known him longer than you have, and I know a lot of things about him... things he couldn't possibly tell you-- not now, at any rate. But let me just say this. He *does* care for you, I know he does, but it's just not possible for him to be in a relationship that way, and there's nothing you or he can do about it." "But why doesn't he tell me that?" she asked, lifting her head slightly. "He feels guilty about it. Guilty that he led you on. Guilty that he led *himself* on. He knew it could never work, but he didn't stop." So Superman was hopeless, but at least she knew he cared. Lois sighed as Clark gently kissed her forehead. She tilted her head to the side slightly as his lips moved across her ear, down her neck, then gently over her throat, soft, silken, comforting caresses. Clark knew, of course, that he shouldn't be doing this... it was wrong, it was terrible, it was *taking advantage.* And Ma Kent's boy didn't take advantage of a lady who was on the rebound of a painfully broken up relationship. Even if she was melting pleasantly in his arms. Even if she was the object of his every desire. Even if she was *Lois*... "Mmmm... oh, Clark, don't stop.... That feels so good...." Lois murmured as she felt him hesitate for a moment. "Lois... I don't want to..." 'Say it.' "To take advantage of you..." She laughed softly. "If you ever do, I'll be sure to let you know. This is not all about *you* deciding things for *me*. I can decide what I want and what I don't, what I like and what I don't... what I *need*..." And just what *did* Lois Lane need right now? More than assurance that Superman cared, but assurance that someone else cared... Her lips met Clark's in a tender kiss. It wasn't wild, wasn't passionate, but it was completely sensual. It was that kind of kiss between two lovers when they have all the time in the world, slow but deep. Reality faded away and all that was left was the sensation of his hands, his body, his mouth.... He was gentle, tender, even loving... and definitely fulfilling. She'd kissed him once or twice before... never really on purpose... but the experiences were memorable nonetheless. This guy was damn good... And she couldn't help but wonder... how would Clark Kent, her partner, her *best friend,* be in bed? With a numb shock, she realized that not only did she want Clark, but she also felt just as good... better, even... kissing him than she had felt kissing Superman. The difference was that Superman had started and stopped suddenly, while Clark... Clark was bringing her slowly and deliberately up to the boiling point. She supposed she should feel a little guilty about being with Clark, especially knowing that Superman *did* care for her. Her fantasy man could turn out to be a plausible counterpart after all, despite all that had happened tonight, and for some reason, she was drawn even more to... ... to her best friend. Why? Why him? Why was the old "in love" feeling back, tenfold? What kind of crazy game was this? "Lois?" 'What?' That was undeniably Clark... "Lois?" "Hm?" "*Are* you okay?" He pulled himself away from her to look in her eyes. She almost laughed. "Okay? I'm..." She was what? Drowning? Insane? Changing her mind? "... I'm in love..." Clark said nothing. He didn't know what *to* say. He didn't know what she meant by it. He could only pray that she'd elaborate. "Oh, Clark... tell me I'm not crazy. Tell me you feel this, too. Tell me..." He silenced her with a fingertip pressed to her lips. "I *love* you." His mouth greedily superseded his finger, and Lois didn't, *couldn't* protest. "Such good friends..." she whispered. "I love you..." ****************************** THE END "Can't stop loving, can't stop what is on its way And I see it coming, and it's on its way." She should be back around occationally once she does get settled. She does anticipate being back online by the 16th because she does scheduled chats for AOL and that is when she returns to them. Her time may be limited around those, however, since she'll have a new time zone to get used to. As for the bbs for feedback, you do not need to register, you just ignore the password part by leaving it blank when it asks for it. ;) Anne :) "If something looks like a duck, talks like a duck, and walks like a duck ... chances are pretty good it is a duck." -- LL, SVFAP The Nfic Archive www.simplyorganized.simplenet.com/annesplace.htm ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 31 Aug 1999 21:14:18 +0100 Reply-To: Yvonne Connell Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: Yvonne Connell Subject: Clark's apartment MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Anybody know how you get to Clark's apartment? When we toured Clark's apartment set in 95 (the spinning wine rack was new for third season) we had to go through the terrace entrance. The terrace is exactly as it's shown in And the Answer Is. You walk up a few steps and at the top is a table and anchor back chairs. The furniture was covered with sheets because the set wasn't "hot" (not set up for filming) and his bed was missing (we joked maybe he'd be sleeping elsewhere third season). He had cans of "Soup for One" in his kitchen cupboard (so much for the sleeping somewhere else theory ;) Clark's apartment set was rather claustrophobic compared to the news room set, which was quite roomy ;) It was also kind of dark in there because none of the set lights were on. When we got to meet Dean and he was given a little statue from a fan who had lived in Borneo and was told that Clark should have a memento from his trip to Borneo, Dean promised he would make sure the statue got put in Clark's apartment. He was as good as his word. The statue can be seen in the episode Don't Tug on Superman's Cape (among others) when that little helicopter is zapping things in Clark's apartment. The earthenware pot that gets blown up on the shelf is right next to the statue >from Borneo. I like to think they did that shot on purpose just to let fans know the statue was there. Of course we'd have been crushed if the statue got blown up A side note on the statue. It was a little warrior carrying a removable sword. However, when Dean was handed the statue, he was kidded that it was a fertility god. Dean laughed and said Clark wouldn't need help in the fertility department (little did he know ;) and then pointed the sword upward.. ahem. There's also a spiral staircase in Clark's apartment that actually seems to lead nowhere, so maybe he lives in a duplex. I hope my rambling helped visualize his apartment, but I doubt it Zoom ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 31 Aug 1999 18:52:00 EDT Reply-To: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: Rowan Fuller Subject: Re: Crystal Wimmer Leaves FoLCdom MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit In a message dated 31/08/99 15:01:15 GMT Daylight Time, REYNORA@MAIL.NORTHGRUM.COM writes: << I wanted to send this just in case others were not aware of Crystal leaving FoLCdom. So isn't it likely that >people from two different universes, who have identical DNA, would develop >in the womb just a bit differently from each other, and so have different >fingerprints? The problem, Jessi, is that you are picturing alternate universes as being totally separate all the time from beginning to end. What has been speculated is that they are more like branches on a tree; that is, they are the same universe for a long time until something causes them to branch off (perhaps the death of Martha and Jonathan Kent when Clark was 10). Everything that occurred before the branching off point is identical because it was the same universe; what occurs afterwards may be similar but probably won't be the same (just as the two branches are similar but not the same). Thus, if the branching off point occurred after a person was born, he and his alternate will be more identical than any identical twins because they will not only have DNA in common, but also intra-uterine development. The later the branching-off point occurs, the more identical the alternates are; but if the branching off occurs before a person is born, all bets are off. In fact, the existence of alternates themselves is called into question, since why should two identical DNA combinations occur in different universes when they don't occur in the same universe with exactly the same parents? According to Bantam's medical dictionary, "every individual has his or her own unique pattern... Fingerprint patterns can show the presence of inherited disorders." If this is correct, fingerprints must be at least partially determined by genetics. So I searched the internet and found the following site, for anyone still interested: http://www.weeklyreader.com/archived/csqc6.html. Basically, it says that identical twins' fingerprints look identical to casual observers. Fingerprint experts, however, can see differences created by different chemical environments in the womb. So I'd say that, for example, the fingerprints of "our" Clark and "Alt" Clark would look identical to most people. Whether or not these differences would be picked up by police would probably depend on the ability of the police experts. Though a computer searching a database of "our" universe's fingerprints may match up those of "our" Clark and "Alt" Clark since it wouldn't realize that there even *is* an "Alt" Clark. -Christy kubitc@kenyon.edu ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 31 Aug 1999 22:46:09 -0500 Reply-To: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: Melissa Day Hall Subject: Clarissa Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" >1) in what fanfic did you introduce Clarissa? I was relating tales of vegetarians at the dinner tale (I described the broccoli-beet salad in lurid detail later), and well, here's the log: Misha: Oh- and there has to be a vegetarian thrown in there- all they can eat are the mashed potatoes (before the milk and butter is added) and a salad. Misha: And then they sort of sneer at all of the evil, meat-eaters. Misha: (My cousins did that one year. Not the sneering, but all they could eat was this little mound of broccoli salad.) Eraygun: Jimmy's new girlfriend Misha: Perfect :) Eraygun: or Lucy's boyfriend ;) ga: There's a doomed relationship ga: We did that with Lucy already ;) Eraygun: we could bring back Jeff :) Misha: "You associate with all these, these...carnivores?!" ga: Make it Jimmy's girl Eraygun: LOL Eraygun: Sound good to me ga: Anyone who would date Aurora ... ;) Misha: And then of course, there's the Kents, who probably know the family who raised the turkey, if they didn't themselves. Eraygun: ROTFL zoomway: "Please, no dead animals for me," Clarissa sniffed. "Kudos on learning to eat live animals, I think they're called geeks at the sideshow," Lois mumbled over the drumstick. So anyway, that was the genesis of Clarissa. She showed up as Jimmy's date in Murder, and we kept bringing her back again and again. She's a hell of a lot of fun to write. That was definately a WAFFY story and i enjoyed sitting here, reading it in my new Sman shirt from the WB Store, I bought the other day! I bought it to sleep in and it is just so dang comfortable.. ::sigh::: This would of been an awesome ep for the LnC show to make. {I know i say that about most of the fanfics i read, but is it so true..} I loved the way Lois put her hands under Sman's cape and then the next thing we know she is telling Clark to kiss her some more... {HUGE SIGH} Alexis ;-.) {who needs to continue writing her own VERY first fanfic!} ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 31 Aug 1999 21:56:58 -0700 Reply-To: Ara Swanson Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: Ara Swanson Organization: American University Subject: Re: Clark's apartment MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit > A side note on the statue. I read a fanfic when I first signed up to this listserv and started checking out the archive about Lois and Clark moving in to their brownstone and deciding where to put the "fertility statue," and now I know where the reference comes from! For the longest time I just thought it was something the props people picked up, and FoLCs noticed it and labeled it a fertility statue, in desperate hopes Lois and Clark would finally get their act together, if you know what I mean! Can the statue be seen in the WB Studio's Virtual Tour of Clark's apartment? Ara :o)
