Something sorta like that happened to me.
I can remember a dream that I had that was sort of scary but at the same
time so much fun.  I had it a few years ago, while the third season was
coming out.  I don't remember all of it, but I remember being on a dock
and watching a huge wave come straight at me, I ducked, then after a few
seconds of nothing happening, I turned around to see the wave going back
out to sea.  Once it had flattened back out, I saw superman flying my
way, then I woke up.
For a while, I thought that was one of the coolest dreams I ever had.
Then when the show stopped and TNT started airing the reruns, I got to
see Honeymoon in Metropolis.  I was so surprised that what I dreamt was
actually a show!
Even better, there was another episode that I was so excited that I'd
get to see.  It was the one where Lois was held captive in a magnificent
underground type home.  Well, I never saw that episode, so I'm sure it
was just a dream I had, I can still see it so vivid in my mind.  That's
ok, there was a likeness of my dream in the fourth season, which was
maybe three years after the dream.
I also and constantly referring to Season 5, TUFS, and Season 6 as if
they were real episodes, I have gotten to where I can see every movement
of baby Laura while I read.

Hi Everyone,

We hope you'll be able to join us Saturday, January 23, 1999, for our fanfic
writing session.  This would normally be a skip week, but since our story is
something of a continuation of last week's, we figured it would be better to
write two weeks in a row. Besides, this way we avoid any possible conflict
with next weekend's Supebowl festivities ;).

This week's premise:

As temporary editor of the Daily Planet Morgan Edge has started to institute
some very questionable changes in personnel and story assignments. But are
his
decisions a reflection of basic incompetence or is something else involved?
And problems on the job aren't the only things Lois and Clark have to worry
about, Superman has suddenly become the target of hidden assassins armed
with
a deadly new weapon.

We would still like to hear from you if you have any story premises of your
own that you would like us to explore together.  You can either email them
to

Or better still, just bring your ideas with you when you join us this
Saturday
or for our weekly "story bouncing" sessions on Wednesdays on #L&CFicOrg,
starting around 9:00 PM EDT.

We generally meet Saturdays starting at 3 PM EDT and try to start writing
fairly soon thereafter.  You can come and join the fun at any time, however.
We are usually there for several hours since writing a story takes time.

Since #L&CFanfic is on occasion "invite only" please message if you want to
join us.  If an official "inviter" is designated, we will let you know.
Some
of us should be hanging out on #Loiscla.

A note on procedure here ;) : When people need to be caught up on the story
in
progress after being bounced off IRC or just joining the session late,
please
try and avoid pasting the story directly into the channel window.  Please do
that in a private message or dcc-chat window instead.

or size?  I guess my big question is, how does one differentiate between a
"vignette" and a "short story"?

Erin, I don't have a page limit to give you for a vignette, other than that
it's usually the length of a single scene (and I have a single scene in one
story that's about 10 single-spaced pages long :).  A short story, of
whatever length, is distinguished from a vignette by the sense of
completion.  In a short story, something happens that changes things for the
main character(s).  Things can never be exactly the same again after the
story, even if all that's happened is that a single possible outcome is
eliminated or that the character doesn't see things the same way anymore.

For example, Isaac Asimov once wrote a 250 word short story about two men on
a space station who were having trouble assembling all the equipment that
kept arriving in pieces ("Fit tab A into slot B" sort of thing), so they
considered their problem, came up with a solution, and requested a robot to
assemble the equipment.  Of course, when it arrived, it was also in pieces.
That story qualified as a story because the main characters found out that
they were stuck in their situation and it was never going to improve.

It's that sense that something has changed for the characters that makes a
piece of writing into a story, not the length.  Obviously, that doesn't mean
that plot-driven stories (like the Perry Mason novels) aren't stories just
because the characters themselves don't seem to change.  Each time PM solves
another case or wins another trial, things are different--in terms of that
case, anyway--so that makes it a story.

I don't know how much help that is, but for what it's worth, that's the
understanding I try to get across to my students.

Well, we've finally finalized the Lois & Clark Fanfic Kerth Award categories
for 1999.  Of course, if we've missed something of vital importance, please
email me to let me know.  We've cut the 28 categories from last year nearly
in half, and we now stand at 16.

We'll be opening for nominations in ONE WEEK, on Monday, Feb. 1st.  I'll
post more on that closer to that date.  As for your mission now, <g> look
through the categories below to make sure we haven't missed something hugely
important.

Also, get your ideas together for the stories you want to nominate!  Any
fanfiction written in the calendar year of 1998 is eligible, whether it is
on the fanfic archive or not, and granted it is suitable for readers of all
ages and is readily available on a website so that it can be read in case it

I've received some questions about this, so I wanted to clarify.

Q.  I submitted my story to the Archive in December 1998, but it wasn't
posted until January 1999.  Is this story eligible for the 1999 Kerth
Awards?

A.  No, but the story will be eligible for the 2000 Awards.  The exception
to this would be if you posted this same story to the fanfic listserv or to
another fanfic website in 1998.

Explanation:  We needed to draw the eligibility line somewhere and the date
the story was "made available to readers" makes the most sense.   For
example, there are still some stories submitted to the Archive in 1998 that
still are still being edited. Those would be unfairly penalized since few
people have had a chance to read them.   Also, what of stories that were
written in 1997 but not posted until January of 1998?  Would those be
disqualified even though they weren't eligible for last year's awards
either?

We have a list of all the stories that were posted to the Fanfic Archive in
1998.  This won't be an exhaustive list of eligible stories since stories
on other fanfic websites are eligible, but it will contain the vast
majority.  If you have any question about a fanfic and when it was
uploaded, please let me know.

Hi everyone!

If anyone is interested, I just found some Superman coloring books at
Kay Bee toy store.  They have a table right now that says buy 2 get a
3rd for a penny.  They are DC comic Superman books are pretty thick and
they are 2 for 3 dollars.  I found 3 different kinds, one called
"Jailbreak", one called "Stop the Presses", and another that is DC
Comics Super Heroes.  Pretty cool stuff to color in  with your kids!  I
think I'll just make copies of mine and color those pages! Better do it
quick though, my son is dying to get his hands on them!

Hiya FoLCs!

This is to advise that the MESSAGE BOARDS on the Lois & Clark Fantasy Land
(web) pages have been revamped.

Some of you were asking that the frames be taken down, and others had
problems with the interface.. well, it's all new and all different now.
I've opted with a completely CGI interface this time (programming I mean,
which I didn't do myself, despite any pipe dreams of genius I may have
secretly been harboring LOL I used a commercial program and just customized
the look -- so don't worry it won't explode in anyone's face! (I hope ;) --
and there's no java, no weirdness, except when the server lags, but even I
can't help that. ;), so the message threads should be much easier to use,
and I like the idea better myself, honestly :)

The address also hasn't changed!  Just click on the big yellow link when

Hi everyone :)

Since this list has been so slow lately and the other list is down, I
figured there were probably others besides me might be going through email
withdrawl <g>.  So I thought I'd take advantage of it to report that the
Kerths fanfic eligibility list on my webpage has been updated with a few new
stories and site information.  Since my previous Kerths post, I've had a
handful of ppl email me with news of some other stories we'd missed.

Please take a minute to browse through it and see if you can think of any
others we may have forgotten.  We definitely want to give due credit to
those fanfic writers out there who work so hard to write such great
stories!!  And after all, what good is a fanfic if it doesn't get read? ;)

Also, Kerth nominations will start this coming Monday!  And yes, absolutely
ANYBODY can nominate stories.  I've had a couple of ppl ask me that.  :)
Just email the list with your nominations (that'll help trigger everyone's
memories to stories we may have forgotten about that are nomination worthy),
or you can email me privately, if you prefer, with the word "NOMINATION" in
the subject line.

Remember, that's this coming Monday, Feb. 1st!  So get reading those stories
over the next few days, or re-familiarize (is that a word? :) with ones
you've already read.  Since the weekend is coming, it'll give you a good
chance to read!

Hi yet again  :)

I had someone ask me a good question about nominations tonight, and I
thought I'd address it here since nominations are closing in on us.  :)

The question was, (and this is paraphrasing) 'Can we nominate more than one
story in a given category?  I love a couple and am having a tough time
deciding which one to nominate, though I know I'll have to end up only
voting for one.'

My opinion is, YES!  I don't have any problem taking a couple of nominations
for the same category from people. BUT....*please* use discression and don't
go overboard by nominating multiple stories in every single category.

Well, today I heard on the radio that the name of the little lunch
resteraunt at Embassy Suites here is "The Dely Planet"!  I've been there
a few years ago and I never even noticed that! I'm ashamed of myself!!!

Hi all,

I know everyone's probably already sick to death of hearing from me, so I'll
be brief.

I've heard some murmurings off the list about our lack of NFIC categories on
this year's regular Kerth Awards and thought I'd address the issue quickly.
(BTW, Nfic stands of 'naughty fic', for those who aren't familiar with the
term.  This genre of stories tends to be on the more adult side)

The reason we're not including any Nfic categories in this year's Kerth
Awards is that we're planning on having AN ENTIRELY SEPARATE Nfic Kerth
Awards, hopefully this summer!  Fun, huh?  <g>  We just thought it was
entirely unfair to all those amazingly talented Nfic writers out there to
only have ONE generalized Nfic category, when they could very easily have an
Awards to themselves.  So we thought, "Why not have an Nfic Kerth Awards,
too?"

So that's what we're planning.  So all you nfic writers out there can stop
sticking pins into your Erin voodoo dolls now.  <g>  We're NOT neglecting
you guys, we're giving you your own Awards.  :)

I recently had a dream but can't remember all of it.  What I can remeber
is that the dream is actually about a fanfic.  I remember the basic
plot, but I don't think I, myself could write it so I'm going to put it
on the list to see if anyone else wants it.

It's going to be an elseworlds story.  It kinda uses the idea from
"Faster Than a Speeding Bullet."

  Supergirl was in a very large bomb exlplosion.  She was already flying
away as fast as she could and the blast sent her over the speed of
light.  She woke up in an alternate world and took up the secret
identity of Lois Lane...

Yeah - Here in BC's Lower Mainland, in Burnaby, to be exact, there is a new
entertainment complex with video arcades, restauraunts, a movie multiplex
and
God knows what else (I haven't done more than a quick spin through it yet!
<BG>) called - Tah Dah... Metropolis. And when I lived in Oshawa, Ontario
(home of GM Canada, BTW) a few years ago, I used to go to a mall across the
civic lines in Whitby (home of the local insane asylum - always wondered if
there was a connection: funny farm next to GM?!!) to visit a news stand
called
- You Guessed It... The Daily Planet. That was when I was just getting into
LNC, and I guess I always secretly hoped I'd bump into a certain
good-looking
pair of investigative reporters. Ah well, dream on, I guess. Maybe if I hang
around this new Metropolis complex enough I'll spot Teri or Dean - at least
at
the movies!

Oh well, enough rambling. Back to lurking.

I collect porcelain houses called Department 56, and the village I collect
is
called "Christmas in the City".  The newspaper building is called the Daily
Globe, and it looks a lot like the DP.  It's really beautiful.
