He wants to make Dr. Klein the family phyician not just his personal physician. What he wants first though is information (this is right befor they get married). For instance how much psi (pounds per square inch) pressure can the human pelvis take? Will he be able to control the amount of force in the throws (bad spelling) of passion? He is very concerned with the mechanics of not hurting Lois. That is as far as I have gotten. Now I am trying to decide if Dr. Klein is going to invent any devices to measure Clarks action. There, of course, are other questions - will a condum hold the sperm or will he shoot through it? Will he shoot through Lois too? Just how much natural force is involved here? Yes, maybe Dr. Klein will put Clark though a lot of embarrassment to get these answers. Many of the doctors I worked with were both M.D., and Ph.D. and even one Sc.D. (a British Degree I believe). Most of the medical doctors wanted (desperatly)[spelling I need a spell checker that works with mail] to do research. Research is a much more difficult field to get into and become respected in than general practice. However, once they got into research, they became concerned about loosing their medical skills and often went on to a specialty or two just to keep their hands in. One passed around 3 specialty boards (at his own expense) one of which was emergency medicine and worked weekends in the Emergency Room at a local hosptial to keep his hand in. They all entered as Aerospace Surgeons through the Flight Medicine Clinic where they took care of the astronauts and their families (originally because all the astronauts were military and would ordinarily receive medical care for themselves and their dependents regardless of where they were stationed). So while Dr. Klein probably was doing most of his work in research, it didn't necessarily mean he had given up medicine. With his reputation, he probably had his Ph.D., and M.D., and a couple of Board Certifications. Sure enough, we asked and it was a movie set. I asked "what's the movie called?" It's called 'Catalina Trust (or Trails...can't remember exactly). Anyway...then I asked who was starring in it. The guy said John Shea! My heart skipped a beat. (of course everyone else was like.."who?") I then asked the guy if John was there and he said that he had already finished filming and left town. =( GRRRR!!!! I was so excited! =( Just wanted to share. This story was written pretty early in the show's run on ABC, so it was before we had it confirmed that Clark was a virgin, for example. So, that would be one question she answered (in her opinion and with the knowledge she had up to then). Another question answered would be whether a Kryptonian male could conceive a child with an Earth female. I suppose it also answers the question of who the Nigerian princess was. Some FoLCs, for example, hypotesize that the princess Clark spoke of in the Pilot was not a romantic liaison at all, but say a young girl he was babysitting for or befriended. If those FoLCs write a fanfic describing the princess as such, they, too, are answering a question (though giving a different answer). Hope that helps! Admittedly, most were on the wrong side of the law when they died, but it seems to me in retrospect that CK almost made less of an effort to bring these people to justice, and 'let' bad things happen to them so he wouldn't have to deal with them. Not that I blame him, given that by the latter seasons, most of the crims were targetting him personally... I never really considered LNC to be a violent show. And it never made the gruesome details of death apparent, but when you sit down and think about a body count, it sure stacks up! Anyone ever done a total body count for the entire show? Not that I blame him, given that by the latter seasons, most of the crims were targetting him personally... >> Well, let's test this theory with the list of toe tags, shall we? ;) Jason Trask (dead) There was no way Clark could have saved Trask. He had his back turned to him, he was without his super powers and Rachel Harris gunned him down as he pulled a gun on Clark to shoot him in the back. So no, Clark is utterly blameless here for Trask's death. (Trask seems to be responsible for the death of George Thompson, the government ombudsman sent to shut down Trask's operations, and he would have killed Lois by throwing her out of the plane had Superman not saved her, and would have killed Martha, Jonathan and Wayne Irig had Clark not been victorious) Vat Man (dead) Superman's imperfect clone was already dying before he started his "showdown" with Clark. There was nothing Clark could have done to save him. Mayson Drake (dead) Admittedly Clark was slow off the mark on that one, but he was also slow in Top Copy when a timer again is heard by him near the end of the countdown and the government witness gets wounded. Plus, Mayson didn't find out until she was already dying. Not to mention Clark wouldn't want her dead, so that wouldn't have been a motive in not getting there in time in any event. Nigel St. John (dead) Not much Clark could do about him. Nigel was being poisoned at the same time that Clark was being killed by Kryptonite Spencer Spencer (dead) Heidi (dead) Pescado (dead) This group of three from Ordinary People would be the most iffy. Clark had just frozen them saying "that'll hold you" when Spencer's gunmen came in firing blindly. If he had *immediately* done that super speed maneuver and knocked them out, then the Spencer ice cube group might have been defrosted and sent to prison, though after Clark had been exposed to Kryptonite, it might have taken him a bit to get back up to "speed" I could have lived happily without the quip "He's a broken man" ;) Lois' clone (dead) Like Vat Man, she was going to die regardless of anything Clark could have possibly done. Lex Luthor (dead ... again) Clark tried to save Lex when Lex made his swan dive suicide attempt, but was left too weak from exposure to Kryptonite to save him. Clark also cut the electric wires when Lex tried to kill himself again in The Phoenix. In Seconds, Clark was concerned with getting Lois out of the underground hideout before it caved-in, and again, due to Lex's own devices, Clark wasn't up to super speed. He seemed barely able to carry Lois he was so weak. Other Kryptonians (dead or moved to another planet) The dead Kryptonians were killed by Kryptonite gas, which made it impossible for Clark to save them when he couldn't even save himself from such a weapon. Lex's son a.k.a. Mr. Smith/troll (dead) Lex's son had a forcefield that prevented Clark from even touching him, much less saving him. Clark's plan had been to knock troll around a bit with his super breath and get hold of the control device, unfortunately, Leslie had other ideas... Leslie Luckabee (dead) Already shot by troll, and thus not in the best of shape as it is, detonated the bomb. Clark barely had enough time to get Lois out before the whole place went up. Bud Collins (the guy who died from the car bombing in The Dad Who Came in from the Cold, before expiring, he said, "Superman, did anybody tell you you look just like Clark Kent, only without the glasses?") Well, this guy, like Mayson (and sometimes it reads almost like a parody of that scene from Lucky Leon) learned the secret (maybe in Bud's case) just before he was going to croak anyway, and like Mayson, Clark certainly didn't want him dead. So, out of those who died and knew (or were strongly suspected of knowing), I'd say only Spencer's group would be iffy, in that Clark might have been able to save them. The others, no, he was either powerless at the time, they were already dying, or someone else took the matter out of his hands. To tell the truth, I think Clark would use his last dying breath even to save a villain who caused him to be issuing that last breath. >>>Anyone ever done a total body count for the entire show? He had Lois thrown out of a plane as bait, and would have killed Clark, Martha, Jonathan and Wayne Irig (a man he had already busted a couple of fingers of ;) Trask wanted to save humanity >from an alien invasion no matter how much of humanity had to die in the cause. I'd say that the first couple of seasons had the most graphic violence, at least in the sense of the "conventional" type of violence (guns, bombings, stabbings). To me, the most violent scene from the series was when Mrs. Cox and the fake Lex had the shootout for the Kryptonite in the 1rst season finale. There was a sadistic quality to episodes with Lex. Smart Kids, for example, an otherwise fairly boring kiddie ep, had Lex talking to a man he had literally turned into a vegetable by force-feeding him (the funnel was still strapped to his mouth) the super smart stuff. His sadism with Superman trapped in the cage was another stand out. Any time Lex returned, the sadism returned with a vengeance. In The Phoenix, he talked about cutting Bender open and sewing a rat up inside his chest. Then Bender was of course killed with a poison dart. He pushed Gretchen Kelley into the power supply and electrocuted her. In the non-wedding arc, Lex was at the apex of cruelty and sadism. He made Clark beg for his parents' lives, took glee in telling the clone he's lied to her about extending her life, etc. He had become the ultimate monster. Third and fourth season, while lacking much of that graphic "conventional" violence, and thankfully most of the sadism, a kind of cavalier approach to deaths (or violence) took its place. Mindy Church polishing her nails while a group of crime bosses were gassed, though I have to admit I laughed, and still laugh at that scene especially when the warning voice says "In the unlikely event of poison gas.." (oh well, McNarmara's writing gets to me ;) There's also the screaming man strapped down in OP, the starting of the sacrifice scene in When Irish Eyes are Killing, the Smallville denizen burned down by heat vision, etc. One factor that might have lessened the impact of the violence was the use of villains were not realistically threatening since they were used more for humor's sake like Mindy, Tempus (though he got darker in 4th season), Spencer, Tim and Amber Lake, Nell and Lucille, Mxyzptlk, Herbie & Katie, etc. Some more effective than others and some were misfires, but none of the caliber of Lex, and to that I say "thank goodness" because Lex was the "undefeated" and like 1rst season he returned to that status during the non- wedding arc, and that was costly in more ways than one. I much preferred Tempus, who would always wage war, but always lose the individual battles. Lois and Clark worked as a team to defeat Tempus, but that never happened satisfactorily with Lex. I think that the most grphic violence would be in the second season episode Chi of Steel. Clarks friend from the eye doctorwhy Clark would acually see an eye doctor is beyond me) who also works for the newspaper gets beat up pretty badly. You don't acually see him beat up but you do see the blood. This is the deffinatly most if not the only blood you really see in the series. To tell the >truth, I think Clark would use his last dying breath even to save a villain >who caused him to be issuing that last breath. OK, So I phrased myself badly... I do that! As you list above, in most cases there was little CK could have done in a lot of cases. Mostly what I was trying to say is that if it was Lois or himself on the line, they found a way to save themselves somehow. Despite time generally being against CK, there wasn't that same do or die attitude to the badies. I don't blame him, except that as you point out above, we expect he would use his last breath trying to save some nasty nobody. Anyway, what I was trying to say > As for 1st and 2nd season being more graphic, less subtle, less implied in violence, I think that comes down to the audience they were aiming at. The first 15 eps (or what ever number Witness was) of S1 were aimed much more the mature audience. As the remaining seasons went on, the targetted audience changed as did the violence (and IMO the brainpower) levels of the show. But I am still curious about how many people (including others who didn't know the secret) were killed in LNC (on screen). I have always regarded LNC as basically non-violent. It strikes me now that I obviously never really considered the matter much before. It has got more than it's fair share of murder and senseless violence. Do I need to support the senseless violence with examples? - the kidnappings in TS is a good example - totally necessary for the plot, but still violence. Anyway, enough senseless raving! _________________________________________________________________________ Thank you kindly, Adrienne VUKOVIC aev@cia.com.au http://www.cia.com.au/aev _________________________________________________________________________ ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 2 Nov 1998 22:21:29 -1000 Reply-To: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: Jamee Jones Subject: Re: TAN: ALMOST sighting MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sara Kraft wrote: > >> Anyway...then I > asked who was starring in it. Nigel, as is revealed in the episode, was contacted by Mazik, they had a "business arrangement" wherein Nigel would be given "certain rewards" for delivering the Kryptonite. Mazik is quick to point out that the rewards are half the money they make using Superman as their personal thief, "and the diary ain't part of the deal", so spake Mazik to Nigel. The diary contained information that made Mazik's father rich, it contained the truth about Superman, so what else did it say? If nothing else, then surely Mazik would have had no objection to handing the diary over to Nigel. All it's "magic" so to speak, had been spent. Why, once he killed Superman, not just hand it over if everything of true interest in it had been spoken of and exploited? I have a feeling that Mazik kept it because it was still of great value even with Superman dead. That there were things he could still invest in, and know the coming of thanks to the diary and be ahead of the game. >>>And if he did know it why didn't he drop Mazik like a hot potato? He has the Kryptonite, why does Nigel need Mazik? Only for the knowledge of the secret.<< If you rewatch the episode, you'll see that the knowledge that Clark was Superman was of little interest to Nigel other than it's exploitable monetary value, and even he seemed to realize that such knowledge had finite exploitability, "Getting a little greedy, are we?" When you think about it, knowing that Clark is Superman isn't all that valuable unless you were more interested in ruining his private life rather than blackmailing him, because Nigel of all people would know about Lois being a weakness of Superman's and could have kidnapped her and blackmailed Superman to commit crimes for him without ever knowing or caring that Superman happens to also be Clark Kent. So if Nigel's primary fascination had been to do what Mazik had in mind, coerce Superman to commit crimes, he could have done that as soon as he double-crossed Lex for the Kryptonite. No, I think the diary and what it contained is what interested Nigel and what he really wanted. It was to his advantage to let Mazik do all the contact and hands-on dirty work, if he learned nothing else from Lex, Nigel did seem to learn that it's better to keep your own hands clean and let someone else take the fall if things go wrong. So Nigel simply waited, let Mazik do the dastardly deed, and then he turned his attention to the diary. Superman was out of the way, and so Nigel was finally free and clear to navigate towards the diary. She wrote once saying that she was in Portugal visiting Lisbon in 1993, if my memory doesn't fail me... As for "I love you" and "Do you want a slap in the face?!", I can help here. I couldn't help laughing at this, though. "I love you" is "Amo-te" and "Queres levar uma bofetada?" stands for the other sentence. Of course they could have used other words for "slap", we have a lot of them, you know! Such as: estalo, chapada, lamparina, etc... Some are slang. Great premise, Larus, and lots of A and B plot possibilities, depending on when the event occurs in the L&C timeline, and which of our reporters ends up in the slammer. We've seen Clark arrested as Superman in MOSB, but what if he's arrested as Clark? Superman can't ignore a cry for help--does Clark risk revealing his other identity by breaking jail to rescue someone in trouble? How does he cover his tracks and explain his absence? ("Uh...I just remembered, I have to return an overdue book to the prison library," probably won't cut it with the guards ) There was an early episode of Murphy Brown that had Murphy in jail for refusing to reveal her sources for an article. Murphy's behavior was remarkably similar to what I would have expected from first or second Lois. Murphy was prepared to deal with a tough, high-security prison, but nearly went insane from boredom when she ended up in a country-club federal prison, surrounded by white collar criminals. And If the episode is set after the wedding and *both* of our reporters end up in separate jails, there are always n-fic possibilities for conjugal visits ;) Hope someone writes this one! The idea the kid Clark befriended knew the secret, started sounding like Batman and Robin. Worse, it seemed to indicate that the show was seriously going to diminish Lois and Clark's relationship in favor of "zap-pow" action for 2nd season, and so the kid would learn the secret instead of Lois (an icky girl ;). Fortunately Chris Demetral (Jack) was only hastily added to the cast because Michael Landes (1rst season Jimmy) wasn't appealing to 9-13 year-old female demographics like Jon Brandis of seaQuest (L&C's major competition the first two seasons) When Demetral flopped with the little girls as well, he was history, and so the series managed to struggle through without him ;) Zoomway@aol.com ========================================================================= Date: Thu, 5 Nov 1998 12:13:20 -0700 Reply-To: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: Erin Klingler Subject: OLD version of fanfic, WYNMM part 1/2 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hi all :) Okay, I give up! Since I had such an onslaught of email (50+ since last night ;)requesting this OLD version of my fanfic, When You Needed Me Most, I thought I'd just go ahead and post it to the list. I hope that's okay! And for those of you who are *not* interested in reading it, please hit the delete key now. :) WARNINGS!! please read: I want to make sure everyone is forewarned...this is the OLD, placed-in-my-recycle-bin-and-just-recently-recovered-from-an-old-disk version of the last half of my story. It was PUT in my recycle bin because there were glaring A-plot holes, etc, and because of that, I never did put the final polish on it. So DO NOT expect this version to be archive-submittable quality. And please *do not* email me saying, "Do you realize you have a plot hole in this part of the story?" because I know. :) That's why the "published" version of my fanfic is very different. :) I am releasing this just because I've had enough ppl interested in reading it, and thought it might give folcs something LNC related to read. Also, keep in mind that, since I never did use this alternate ending, I'm going to be using various bits and pieces from this old version of my story in a NEW story I'm working on. So if you read my soon-to-be-finished fanfic on the archive in the next couple of months, and parts of it sound familiar, you can't say I didn't warn you. OH! Also--since this story was so long to begin with, I'm not including all of it; just the part where it branches off and changes direction from the original. The version below begins after the doctors decide to use the Kryptonite to weaken CK's skin to get the blood samples from him. If you've never read the original story and have no clue what I'm talking about , I suggest you read the original version first. Now, on with the story! ****************************************************** WHEN YOU NEEDED ME MOST (LAST HALF OF THE OLD VERSION) by Erin Klingler erink@ida.net ******************************* ....... All the doctors in the room nodded, finally understanding what Clark was telling them. "So how long would you need to be exposed to the Kryptonite for this to work?" One of the specialists asked. Clark looked over at Dr. Klein and they thought for a minute. "Maybe about ten minutes," they decided. The doctors all looked at each other, mulling it over. Finally Dr. Simons said, "Okay, then let's do it!" Instantly there was a room full of hustling people as everyone went back to their stations or left the room to get things ready for the blood analysis. "Uh, Dr. Simons?" Clark asked quietly. Dr. Simons turned to him. Clark continued. "Would it be okay if I went to tell my folks what we're going to do? Also, I'd like to send them back to my apartment so they could get some sleep. They've been here all night." Dr. Simons smiled understandingly. "You bet." Then his smile brightened as he tried to lighten the seriousness of the moment. He winked at Clark. "Besides, I don't think I'm strong enough to keep you from going even if I told you you couldn't." Clark smiled. "Thanks. Oh... if you could make sure there are a couple of security guards posted outside of Lois' room to keep an eye on her after my parents have left, I'd be grateful." Dr. Simons patted his arm. "No problem. Go on, and I'll call security right now." Clark smiled gratefully and took off the circular monitor pads that were still stuck to him and placed them carefully on the machine beside the bed. Then he grabbed his flannel shirt and slipped it on, fumbling tiredly with the buttons. "I'll be back in a minute." "No hurry. Take all the time you need." Clark was pleased to see that when he reached Lois' room a few minutes later, two security guards were already posted there. And he was even more pleased when they actually stopped him from entering the room. "I'm sorry," the tall, very muscular man said as he stepped in front of Clark. "This is a restricted room. No one is allowed in." Clark smiled, relieved that Lois would be in good hands. "I'm Clark Kent, Lois' husband," he explained to the guard. The guard suddenly seemed to instantly recognize him, and his face broke out into a smile. "Oh, Superman!" he exclaimed, stepping out of the way. "Of course, I'm sorry. I didn't recognize you with your glasses on. Please, go right on in." Clark smiled tiredly at the guard. He could tell that he was going to have to get some things straight about his identity so that everyone would know what to call him. "Please," he told the guard kindly. "Call me Clark. 'Superman' isn't really my name. Okay?" The two guards nodded immediately. "Of course. We understand." Then Clark smiled thankfully at them before pushing open the door to Lois' room. He saw that his parents were both dozing in their chairs by Lois' bed. He went quietly over to his mom and shook her lightly. "Mom, wake up." She woke up immediately, looking a bit startled. But they she relaxed when she saw Clark standing over her "What time is it?" she asked quietly. "About five a.m." he turned to his dad and woke him up, too. "I want to tell you guys what's going on." His parents listened carefully as Clark told them what they had decided to do. His parents were obviously very concerned. "But Clark, are you sure it'll be safe?" his mom asked. "We know what Kryptonite can do to you. I'm not sure this is such a good idea." And his dad nodded in agreement. "Under the circumstances, I think that the Kryptonite is actually going to save Lois' life. Dr. Simons says that he's discovered that after they get a sample of my blood, they can mix the healthy anti-bodies in my blood with some of the blood they extracted from Lois, and mix them together with a desensitizing agent that they could inject into Lois' bloodstream. Since it'll be a modified version of the anti-bodies in her blood, it should kill off the poisoned blood cells. Then everything would be back to normal." Martha and Jonathan nodded their heads. "That makes sense," they agreed. "Listen," Clark told them. "I want you two to go back to the apartment to get some sleep. It'll be a couple of hours before the blood injection is ready to test. I'll call you when it is." They agreed, and Clark started to walk out of the room with them. "On second thought," he said suddenly. "Maybe you guys ought to check into a hotel nearby under a different name. The morning edition of the Daily Planet is due to come out in about an hour, and my apartment will be one of the first places surrounded by media. I don't want you guys to be harassed." Deciding that Clark was right, they told him they'd check into the Marriott down the street under Martha's maiden name. Clark saw them to the elevator, then went back to the lab to wait. ********** Dr. Klein was back with the Kryptonite in a lead-lined case about an hour later accompanied by an armed guard. When he opened the door to come into the lab, Clark could hear all the commotion down the hall. Dr. Klein closed the door quickly behind him and looked a bit frazzled. "Man, it's a madhouse out there. Apparently, the morning edition of the Planet just came out and the security has their hands full keeping all the media out of the building." When he saw Clark's worried expression, he patted Clark's shoulder reassuringly. "Don't worry. I just checked on the security in the maternity wing, and Lois and the baby are well protected." Clark breathed a sigh of relief. For the next few minutes, the other doctors came filing in for a briefing by Dr. Simons, who had taken over the case. When everybody was there, they were all told what to expect and about how much of a time window they would have to take the blood samples they needed, etc. before they would have to stop Clark's exposure to the Kryptonite. "Let's make this a positive effort, people. We only want to do this once, for Clark's own health, so let's get it right the first time." About half of the doctors left the room to ready their lab equipment, while the other half stood back, waiting for the time when they could move in to do their jobs. Dr. Simon had Clark take his shirt off and lay back down on the table. "Dr. Klein is going to be monitoring your vital signs as you're exposed to the Kryptonite, so that he can compare them with the read outs we got on you earlier. If he sees that you're in any danger, we'll stop the exposure the Kryptonite immediately, no questions asked." But Clark shook his head. "Don't stop it unless absolutely necessary. Remember, it'll take about ten minutes before my skin will be vulnerable. And I can handle a whole lot more than your charts say I can. Besides, my wife's life is depending on this." Dr. Simon nodded. "I understand." He looked at Clark for a minute. "Are you ready?" Clark nodded. He tried to relax as he looked up at the bright lights on the ceiling. He could hear Dr. Klein roll the cart over beside him that held the lead-lined Kryptonite box. A minute later he heard him start to lift the lid. Almost immediately, Clark felt a wave of pain sweep through him and he gritted his teeth against the searing pain. He also felt Dr. Simon's hand squeeze his right arm tightly, reassuring him in any way that he could. The pain continued to move Clark's body in waves, and Clark gasped out in pain and agony. After about two minutes of this, Dr. Klein, who was carefully monitoring his vital signs, called out. "Dr. Simons, his EKG is already off the charts! There's no way he's going to be able to handle another five minutes of this!" Clark heard Dr. Simons and Dr. Klein consulting quickly over his vital signs. But then Clark felt another strong wave of pain, and he yelled out in pain. Dr. Simon seemed to panic. "We've got to stop this right now!" Clark heard him shout. "We're killing him! We'll just have to find another way to do this." He moved toward the Kryptonite to shut the lid, but Clark grabbed his arm with what little strength he had left. Through clenched teeth, Clark managed to say, "No, please! Lois is counting on me. She needs this to work if she's going to live." But Dr. Simons shook his head. "We'll just have to find another way to do this. I don't think your body's going to be able to stand this much longer." Clark held onto his arm tightly. "Please, Dr. Simons. I would personally rather die than live a life without Lois. And she needs this to work. Please...." he begged with as much force as he could muster. It was quiet for a minute as Dr. Simon's mind whirled about frantically. "Dr. Simons... his EKG! What do you want me to do?" Dr. Simons was silent for another moment as he stared into Clark's troubled eyes, seeing the fierce love that this man had for his wife, and the determination he saw there that would get him through this. "Please," Clark repeated again. "I can make it. I have to make it." It was in that instant that Dr. Simons made his decision. "Let's keep going," he told everyone quietly. Everyone was quiet as they knew that Dr. Simons had just made an incredibly tough decision. They all went back to work without questioning it. Clark released his grip on the doctor's arm and whispered, "Thank you" to him before closing his eyes again to the pain. When the agonizing ten minutes were almost up, Dr. Peterson tested Clark's skin by pinching it lightly and attempting to press the tip of a needle through it. He was ecstatic when he saw that the needle pieced Clark's skin. "It worked!" he called out excitedly. "Let's get to work." Then there was a big commotion as everybody rushed around doing what they needed to do. Clark was barely aware of what was going on, the Kyrptonite having sent him into a drugged state. He could see the blur of the people around him, and hear the static of everyone's voices, but he was unable to do anything but lie still and watch. After what seemed like an eternity, Dr. Simons stepped back with a handful of blood-filled viles. "Time!" he called out. Clark heard then shut the lid on the Kryptonite and said a silent prayer, thankful that it was over. Then he could see Dr. Simons leaning over him, studying him carefully with concern in his eyes. "Clark, can you hear me? How are you feeling?" It was all Clark could do to respond to the simple question. Finally he was able to whisper, "Weak." "You're going to be fine. Your EKG stats are returning to normal. Do you have any idea how long it will take for you to return to your normal strength?" Clark could feel some of his strength already returning, and this time speaking wasn't quite as difficult. "I don't really know. I'm already starting to feel a little stronger, though." "Okay," Dr. Simons said. "Then why don't we leave you in here to recover while we get to work on this antidote. Will you be okay?" Clark nodded. "Yeah, I'll be fine." The doctor left the room, and Clark was alone. He continued to lay on the bed for a few more minutes, letting his strength return gradually. After about ten minutes he decided he felt strong enough to sit up. He sat up slowly, almost experimentally, and dangled his feet over the edge of the bed and sat quietly for a minute. A couple of minutes later, Dr. Simons poked his head back in the room. "There's someone out here who says he's a friend of yours. He says his name is Jimmy Olsen. Should I let him in?" Clark nodded slowly. "Sure. Send him in." Clark focused his attention on his feet as he put them firmly on the floor. He had just barely stood up when the door opened again and Jimmy came in looking frazzled and concerned. "Hey, C.K.! Are you all right?" Jimmy asked with concern as he came in to stand beside Clark. "Yeah, I'm okay, Jimmy," Clark said weakly. "Oh, man. I've been trying for the past half-hour to convince the guards down the hall to let me in. They're sure not letting anyone through." He paused long enough to take a deep breath. "Hey, your folks called me about half an hour ago and asked if I could come down here to be with you. They told me what you guys were planning to do with the Kryptonite. How are you feeling?" Clark stood up, feeling more strongly now, and reached out awkwardly to touch Jimmy's shoulder. "I'll be fine in a few minutes." He paused, then looked into Jimmy's face. "Hey, thanks for coming, Jimmy." "Oh, sure. No problem." It was quiet for a minute as Clark concentrated on regaining his bearings. Then Jimmy smiled broadly and gestured to Clark's bare, muscular chest. "Wow, will you look at you!" Jimmy said lightly. "You are so beefed. And all this time I thought you just worked out a lot at the gym. But I guess you don't have to, huh?" Clark laughed weakly and shook his head. "No, I don't have to." There was a brief pause, and then Clark said, "I think I need to sit down for a minute. I still feel pretty weak. Let's go over to the couch." Jimmy offered his help right away. "Here. Let me help." Clark thankfully put his arm around Jimmy's shoulder and leaned on him as they made their way across the room to the black leather couch against the wall. Jimmy had his arm around Clark's middle as he helped support his weight. When they reached the couch, Clark dropped thankfully onto it. He leaned his head back against the backrest and clasped his hands together, lifting them to his eyes so that the back of his hand was resting over his eyes in a tired gesture. Then he just sat like that for a minute. "So, was it rough?" Jimmy asked softly. Clark nodded a little, but didn't change positions to do so. From behind his hands he said quietly, "Yeah, it was pretty rough." Jimmy nodded, and again it was quiet in the room. Then Jimmy asked, "Do the doctors think this blood typing thing will work?" Clark dropped his hands to rest them heavily on his legs. Then he lifted his head from the back of the couch and focused his stare on his hands in his lap and sighed. "They feel pretty confident that it will." Jimmy sighed with obvious relief. "That's good news. Everybody at the Planet has been really worried about her since they found out about everything that's happened. They all send their love." Jimmy paused, then in a quiet voice he said, "Do you think Lois will ever know what you went through for her? I mean, with this Kryptonite thing, and why you had to tell everybody that you're Superman?" Clark shrugged tiredly. "I don't know, Jimmy." He was quiet as he thought about that. Then he continued, "But you know what, Jimmy? I love her so much that I'd move heaven and earth for her if I had to." Jimmy smiled kindly at Clark. "Yeah, I know." He was quiet for a minute. Then a teasing smiled brightened his face and he elbowed Clark lightly. "And I bet you literally could, huh?" Clark turned slightly so that he looked over at Jimmy out of the corner of his eye, then he laughed softly at Jimmy's joke. In a soft, humble voice, he joked back, "Yeah, I guess I could." They were both quiet as they pondered the recent events. Then Clark seemed to realize what he had really done. He moaned and let his head fall back onto the back of the couch. "Oh, man, what have I done? My life's never going to be the same again. Everything is gonna change. I mean, how am I ever going to work at the Planet? Everybody's going to be constantly hounding me about this or that. At least when I kept the whole Superman thing a secret, I had some semblance of a normal life. But that's all going to change now, isn't it?" He looked over at Jimmy as he spoke these last words. "Well, one thing won't change," Jimmy told him firmly. "I'll always be here if you need me. And Perry will be, too. You know what C.K.?" Jimmy paused, as if he were a little unsure of how to say his next words. "I've always considered you to be my best friend. You've always been there for me when I needed something, and I want you to know that I plan on returning the favor. Anything you need, anytime....you can count on me." Clark smiled at Jimmy, touched by his words. "Thanks, Jimmy. That means a lot." They smiled at each other with a renewed sense of friendship. Then Jimmy's teasing smile was back and he laughed lightly as he said, "Now, about this Superman thing. I know that girls really dig it, so if I meet this really cute chick, is it alright with you if I drop your name and tell them that I know you?" Clark laughed, feeling pretty much back to his normal self. "Sure, Jimmy, sure. I knew that there had to be a good reason for telling everybody who I really am. And that's definitely why I did it....to help you get women." They were still laughing as the door to the room opened. Instantly they could hear the commotion of all the people outside. "What's going on?" Clark looked up seriously at Dr. Simons, who had just come in and shut the door behind him. "You wouldn't believe the number of people out there," he said. "You were right. It's a madhouse." "But I thought the guards were keeping everybody outside the building?" Jimmy asked, confused. "Well, apparently they found an alternate way into the building. The guards have had their hands full trying to keep them out of the wing. The local police department has been called in for help, and they're sending some reinforcement over." Clark looked worried. "Can they keep all the people away from Lois and the baby?" Dr. Simons quickly reassured him. "Everything's just fine, Clark. Don't worry yourself about it. By the way, how are you feeling?" Clark nodded. "Better. I'll be okay." "Good. Because I came in here to give you some good news." Instantly Clark perked up. "What is it?" "Our blood typing and mixing idea worked. We've been testing it over and over again in the lab for the past half hour, and it's going to work beautifully." Clark was so relieved that he rested his head back on the couch and closed his eyes, sighing with relief. "Thank you," he whispered up to the sky. Then he sat back up and asked, "So when do we start?" "Dr. Peterson is finishing with the antidote as we speak. In a few minutes we should be ready to inject it into Lois." Clark stood up slowly and went over to Dr. Simons to shake his hand, but ended up hugging him instead. "Thank you so much. For everything." Dr. Simons seemed surprised by Clark's openness and laughed lightly as he hugged him back. "You're welcome," he told Clark. When Clark pulled back, Dr. Simons said, "Consider it repayment for saving my son's life in Brazil." Clark smiled. "I'd say that's a fair exchange." After a brief pause, Dr. Simons said, "Well, if you're feeling up to it, why don't we go back to Lois' room to wait for Dr. Peterson? He should be there in a few minutes with the antidote." "That would be great." Then he remembered Jimmy, and quickly introduced him-as one of his best friends-to Dr. Simons. The two shook hands. "Well, let's get going," Dr. Simons said. Clark reached for his flannel shirt and began buttoning it up as they headed for the door. Halfway there, he stumbled a little and had to grab the edge of a counter to stop himself from falling. Dr. Simons quickly reached out to steady him, looking concerned. "Are you sure you're up to this?" Clark nodded determinedly. "I'm still just a little weak, that's all." Right away Jimmy offered to help. "Here, Clark. Lean on me and I'll help you to Lois' room." Clark nodded gratefully and put his arm around Jimmy's shoulders so that he could lean on him. "Thanks, Jimmy." "Yeah, no sweat," Jimmy answered, putting his arm around Clark's middle so that he could help steady him. As soon as Dr. Simons opened the door, Jimmy and Clark could hear the crowd noise down the hall. When the threesome stepped out into the hall, Clark looked in dismay at the huge crowd of newspaper journalists, television reporters and camera crews that was being held back by the security guards not fifty feet away. Instantly, Clark heard the cry, "There he is!" followed by a surge in the decibel level as everyone spotted him. The guards had their hands full trying to keep them all back. Flashes popped like crazy, and the bright lights from the now alert television cameras nearly blinded them. Clark could hear all the reporters instantly yelling out their questions to him: "Superman! What made you decide to go public with your secret?" one yelled. Another yelled out, "How's your wife?" Another joined in, "What about your son? Will he have your super powers?" Clark cringed at the publicity, especially knowing that he was being filmed looking so ragged, and as unlike the superhero everyone had come to see. He was very aware of the fact that he still had the same plaid flannel shirt on that he had worn the day before, and that it was buttoned lopsided and that the front of it was untucked from his jeans. Not only that, but he knew how haggard he must look after his Kryptonite exposure, and how he was having to lean dependently on Jimmy to keep from falling down as they walked. "Oh, this is just great," he muttered under his breath wearily. "This is exactly what I had hoped wouldn't happen. Can't they just leave us alone for a while?" Jimmy took the incentive and waved his right arm at the crowd in a 'go away' gesture. "Come on, you guys! Give us a break!" Dr. Simons jumped on the bandwagon, too. He stepped up to address the crowd. "Can I have everyone's attention, please!" he shouted, as Clark and Jimmy took the opportunity to move down the hall so that they were no longer in sight of the crowd. "This is a hospital, not a street fair. There are patients here recovering from sicknesses or operations, and I will not have them disturbed! Now, everyone needs to cooperate and take this outside. I will see if I can get Clark to hold a press conference in a couple of hours in the hospital's press room." With that, the crowd seemed satisfied and allowed the guards to shuffle them back toward the elevators. Satisfied that he had sufficiently dealt with that problem, he turned and went in the same direction that Clark and Jimmy had just gone. He found them in Lois' room a few moments later. He was pleased to notice how quiet her room was compared to the bedlam down the hall. It was just what a recovering patient needed. He shut the door quietly behind him, and both Clark and Jimmy turned to look at him expectantly. "I told them I'd talk to you about doing a press conference in a couple of hours," Dr. Simons told Clark quietly. "It was the only thing I could think of to get them to agree to leave the building peacefully." Clark nodded. "I guess I'll have to do it sooner or later, so I may as well get it over with." Just then Dr. Peterson came in with a rolling cart with a tray of needles and other medications on it. "We're ready to go," he whispered. Dr. Simons nodded. "Then let's get to it." They took the new i.v. bag from the cart and exchanged it with the one on Lois' stand, then prepared the three shots they were going to give her. "It's going to take a bigger dosage them we initially thought," Dr. Simons explained to Clark as Dr. Peterson proceeded to give Lois the first shot. Everyone waited anxiously as the second and third shots were given. Finally Dr. Peterson nodded and stepped back. "That should take care of it." Clark turned to him. "How long until we know if it's working?" "I think we should give it about a half hour, and then we'll take another blood sample from Lois to compare to her earlier ones. That should be able to tell us how well and how quickly it's working." "Okay," Clark nodded, leaning back in his chair. He took his glasses off with one hand and rubbed his eyes tiredly with the other. Dr. Simons could tell how tired Clark was. "How long has it been since you've slept?" Clark sighed. "A long time." "Why don't we see about bringing a cot in here for you? That way you could get some sleep, but still be with Lois." Clark smiled gratefully. "That would be great. Thanks." The doctors left to do that, and Clark turned to Jimmy. "How about you? If my folks called you early this morning, you probably didn't get much sleep either." "I guess I am pretty tired, too. But I'll be fine if you want me to stay." Clark smiled gratefully, but shook his head. "No, I'll be okay. Why don't you go on home and get some sleep? I'll call you as soon as we know anything." "Okay. What about the press conference?" Clark sighed again, now feeling the reality of the whole situation falling upon him heavily. He looked up at the clock on the wall and thought for a minute. "Well, it's 6:30 now. What time do you think we should do this?" Jimmy thought about that. "I don't know. Let's ask Dr. Simons." Dr. Simons was back in a minute carrying a large folding cot, a pillow, and a blanket. Jimmy stood up and helped him set it up against the wall. Then Clark asked him what he thought about the time of the press conference. "I want to be here with Lois when you get the answers to her blood test," Clark told him. "And I definitely want to be here when she wakes up. How long afterward do you think that will be?" "After we examine the new blood type, we'll have a pretty good idea how long it will take to take affect. I'd venture to say, though, that it would be a couple of hours before the antidote kicks in and Lois is conscious again." Clark nodded. "Okay. Then how about if we schedule the press conference in about an hour and half? That would be at..." Clark looked at his watch. "Eight o'clock. That'll give us enough time for the blood tests, won't it?" Dr. Simons nodded. "Definitely." "Why don't you let Dr. Simons and me announce it before I leave, then?" Jimmy spoke up. "That way you can stay here with Lois." Clark smiled a little and nodded. "Okay. Thanks. Thanks for everything, you guys." Jimmy and Dr. Simons smiled at him, then left the room. Clark leaned forward in his chair by Lois' bed and very gently took her hand, squeezing it softly. "It won't be long, now, Lois, and you'll be better. Then we can take that precious little baby and go home. Just the three of us." He lifted her hand to his lips and kissed it tenderly. Then Clark laid her hand gently back on the bed and walked across the small room to the cot. He laid down on it and was immediately asleep. ********** Clark was awakened when he felt someone gently shaking him. He struggled to open his heavy eyelids, and when he did, he found himself looking into Dr. Simons' very excited face. "What is it?" Clark asked eagerly, suddenly wide awake. Dr. Simons nodded happily. "We just got the results back on the blood test we ran a half hour ago, and I'm pleased to report that the antidote is working just like we planned. She's going to be just fine." All the stress, tension and worry that Clark had felt over the past twenty-four hours seemed to just drain away, and Clark found himself starting to cry happy tears. He stood up immediately and hugged Dr. Simons happily, unable to hold back his pent up tears and emotions. Dr. Simons seemed just as happy as Clark, and he laughed quietly and hugged Clark back. He groaned, though, and joked, "Well, I can tell that your strength is definitely returning." Clark laughed, feeling happier than he had in many hours. "Sorry about that," he whispered, laughing. "That's quite all right. I didn't want to wake you earlier when we came in to take the blood sample because you looked like you really needed the sleep. But I just had to wake you now to let you know that everything is going to be just fine. I suspect that at the rate her blood cells are reacting to the antidote that she should be strong enough to regain consciousness in a couple of hours." He glanced at his watch. It's twenty to eight right now. Are you sure you're going to be up for this press conference?" Clark nodded. "Now that I know Lois is going to be well, I feel up for just about anything." Then Clark said asked, "Is there somewhere I can take a shower and get ready for this?" Dr. Simons nodded. "Sure. There's a doctors locker room in the west wing. I can show you a back route to get there so you won't have any encounters with any reporters we may have missed." Clark smiled at Dr. Simons, then reached out his hand to shake his. "Dr. Simons, thank you for everything. I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate what you've done for me and my family." Dr. Simons smiled gently. "I'm just glad I could help." "I hope this gets you in the International Journal of Medicine like you wanted to be," Clark added with a smile. Then he told him, "If you ever need anything...anything at all. You know, like having a meteor stopped >from crashing into Brazil..." Dr. Simons laughed at Clark's words. Clark continued, more seriously this time. "You just let me know. Okay?" Dr. Simons nodded, still smiling broadly. "Okay." Clark was soon in the quiet of the locker room, climbing into the shower. The hot water streaming from the shower head felt incredible, and Clark stood still under its spray for several minutes, letting it soothe his tense muscles. What an unbelievable couple of days this has been, Clark thought silently. First, his new son had been born and he couldn't have been prouder. And now Lois was going to be okay. Just then Clark realized that he hadn't even seen his new baby in the last twelve or so hours. He'd been so preoccupied with Lois, that he hadn't had time to see him. Well, that was all going to change. Lois would be well and ready to go home in a couple of days, and then they could spend some quiet time as a family, just the three of them. Clark breathed a happy sigh. It would be wonderful to have things back to normal. Then Clark cringed. Nothing would ever be 'normal' for them again. At least not in the sense that they would be the way they were. Now that the world knew that he was Superman, things were definitely going to be different. He knew they would probably never have the quiet, undisturbed life that they had previously had. Clark sighed. They'd just have to get used to it. With renewed determination, Clark finished his shower. Then he stepped out of the shower and got dressed, wishing that he'd had a fresh set of clothes to change into. Oh well, he thought. I'll just have to make do with these until I can get home. After running a comb through his towel-dried hair, he left the dressing room. He made his way back to Lois' room to check on her before heading down to the press conference. When he arrived, Dr. Simons was there checking on Lois. He smiled at Clark as he walked into the room. "Feeling human again?" Clark smiled. "Well, almost." Dr. Simons laughed, then stepped away from Lois' bed. "She's improving steadily," he told Clark. "I'm happy to say that in a day or two she'll be able to go home." Clark breathed a happy sigh. "You don't know how wonderful that sounds." He paused, looking lovingly over at Lois. Then he turned to Dr. Simons. "I guess I should head down to the press conference. Do you have any suggestions for me?" Dr. Simons nodded. "First of all, the other doctors and I have agreed that it's in your best interest not to mention the Kryptonite treatment. I know I don't have to tell you about the consequences if that information got out to the criminal population. We've all decided to keep silent about that part of this whole ordeal, and it will never be talked about to anyone." Clark nodded. "Thanks. I appreciate that." "Oh, I forgot to mention that I'll be coming with you," Dr. Simons continued. "I suggest that you let me answer any questions about Lois' medical condition and treatment. Just send all those questions my way. Okay?" Clark nodded. "Okay." "So, are you ready?" "As ready as I'll ever be," Clark said. Five minutes later, Clark and Dr. Simons were approaching the hospital's conference room, and just from the noise, Clark could tell that the room was jammed. Dr. Simons could tell that Clark was tensing up, and he touched his shoulder supportively. "Do you want some advice from somebody who's done a lot of these press conferences?" Clark nodded, so Dr. Simons continued. "Just relax and be yourself. Don't let any of the reporters intimidate you, because they like to try to do just that." Then Dr. Simons smiled when he realized what he had just said. "What am I saying? Of course you know that. You're one of those blood-sucking journalists!" Clark laughed, relaxing a little. "But, most of all," Dr. Simons continued. "Don't get suckered into answering any questions you don't want to answer. I know that you're a nice guy, and that you want to make everyone happy. But that doesn't mean you have to talk about something that you'd prefer not to talk about. Just say something like, 'I'd prefer not to answer that one' or something like that. Got it?" Clark nodded. "Got it." Then Clark straightened up and squared his shoulders, striding purposefully toward the conference room's doors. *************** CONTINUED IN PART 2 ******************* Erin :) _______________ erink@ida.net Visit my updated LNC website! http://www.ida.net/users/davek/ ***** "No one knows how long they've got. "There he is!" somebody called out excitedly. Then the flashes started going off like crazy, and the bright lights of the television cameras instantly flooded him and the doctor with light. "Clark, over here!" he heard several people call out. Clark tried his best to look casual as he walked to the raised platform at the front of the room. There he sat in a chair at the table in front of the microphone and waited until the crowd quieted down. But they didn't. Dr. Simons took over from there. He raised his arms and yelled out at the crowd, "Let's have some quiet!" The room quieted down in a hurry. Clark looked over at Dr. Simons with a whole new respect. Obviously, this man was used to dealing with the press. Dr. Simons spoke again when he saw that he had the crowd's attention. "We want to get this press conference over with as quickly as possible so that Clark can return to his wife's side." A reporter quickly took advantage of the quiet and shouted out, "Superman, how is Lois doing?" Clark shuddered at being called 'Superman'. But he held onto his composure and cleared his throat purposefully. "Before I answer any questions, I'd like to make a statement." Clark took the opportunity to look around the jammed room, for the first time able to see how many people were actually there. There must've been close to two hundred people jammed into that room, standing room only. Clark recognized many of them as journalists he knew and had worked with in the past. It made him a little uneasy as he wondered how they felt about him now. Putting those thoughts out of his mind, he went on. "First of all, I'm sure all of you are shocked to hear this news, and I can't say that I blame you. And you're probably all wondering what made me decide to come out with this now, after I've kept it a secret all my life. "Well, I plan to answer all of those questions for you in the next half hour or so, but please let me start off by saying this. Yes, I am Superman, but that's not my name. It's Clark Kent. Please call me that." Then for the next few minutes, Clark explained to the roomful of people why he had kept his other identity a secret for so many years. He also explained that he would've continued to keep it a secret forever if he could. But when Lois' situation required him to bring everything out in the open, he had to do so. The reporters immediately wanted to know about Lois' condition, and what had caused it. Clark immediately directed those questions to Dr. Simons, who readily answered all the questions on her medical condition. After about fifteen minutes had passed, Clark opened the floor for other questions. A reporter to the left of the room, who Clark recognized was from a rival paper of the Daily Planet, spoke up. "How's your baby, Clark? I understand that you delivered him by yourself at your apartment." Clark smiled at that. "He's doing fine, and yes, I did have to deliver him myself at our apartment. Lois went into labor yesterday morning and there wasn't time to get her to the hospital. It was a very....interesting experience." The room tittered with laughter. Clark gestured to another reporter whose hand was raised. "Will your son have your super powers?" Clark had expected that question to surface sooner or later. He shrugged. "I really don't know. The doctors haven't discovered that he's shone any symptoms of having them, but I didn't start to get my powers until I was almost thirteen. So he may still develop them as I did. I just don't know." "What do you and Lois intend to do when she's well enough to leave the hospital?" was the next question asked. "I don't know the answer to that one, either. I guess we'll just have to talk about that and decide what to do when the time comes. But one thing is definite. I fully intend to continue helping those in need, and doing my very best to continue doing all the things that 'Superman' has done in the past. That won't change. My parents raised me with the belief that all human life is sacred, and that the peace we all enjoy is as important to keep alive as people are." A couple more questions were asked, and after Clark had answered them, he held up a hand to silence the crowd. "Okay. One more question, and then I'd like to get back to my wife." Clark heard a familiar voice call his name, and he strained to see the face attached to the waving arm along the side wall. He smiled when he saw that it was Jimmy. "Yeah, Jimmy." "Clark, we all know that you're an award winning journalist at the Daily Planet. I personally know how much you love your job there. What are your plans involving work?" Clark smiled right at him, knowing that Jimmy was setting him up by putting him on the spot. "Well, Jimmy, you're right. I do love my job reporting for the Planet, and so does Lois. I haven't talked to her about it, but I suspect that she'll want to return to work as much as I do. If Perry will still want us there," he finished with a broad smile, causing the room to laugh at the thought of Perry not wanting Clark, a superhero and award-winning journalist, to keep working at the Planet. Clark addressed the crowd again. "I would like to make one more comment before we wrap this thing up. Before I made my true identity public this morning, I've lived a fairly normal life. I have good friends, a job I enjoy, a wife who I love more than life itself, and now a beautiful son. I've always enjoyed doing the everyday things that everybody enjoys. I enjoy going to baseball games, hanging out with friends, being a journalist for the Planet... And I don't want things to change. "But I have the feeling that things are going to change whether I want them to or not. So I have no choice but to go along with that change. But I'd like to go on the record as saying, Please. Please let me continue to lead the life that I have grown to love. I understand that this is extremely newsworthy, but please don't follow me and my family and friends around constantly so that they can't lead the lives that they are accustomed to. "I realize that being who I am will always make people curious and interested in pretty much everything I do. But I would just like to say... please go easy on me, and especially on Lois. She's the love of my life, and I don't want to see her relentlessly pursued. I'm sure all of you would feel the same way I do if you were in my shoes.....or 'cape', as the case may be," Clark finished with a smile, causing the room to rock with laughter. "Now if you'll all excuse me, I need to go be with Lois. Thank you all for coming." He stood up, and was touched when the room erupted with thunderous applause. He looked over at Jimmy along the side wall, and smiled as Jimmy gave him a thumbs-up sign. Apparently Jimmy thought the press conference had gone well. Clark, too, couldn't help thinking that it had gone better than he thought it would. He left the room and went out into the hall. The first thing he saw was his parents smiling proudly at him. "Mom, Dad....what are you guys doing here?" he asked with a start. They hurried over to him, and his mom gave him a great big hug while his dad patted him proudly on his shoulder. "You did just great," his mom told him. "We're so proud of you." "Thanks," Clark said, hugging them back. "Have you been upstairs to see Lois yet?" They shook their heads. "We wanted to wait for you." Then Clark realized that Dr. Simons was standing beside him. "Oh, Mom, Dad...this is Dr. Simons." Martha and Jonathan both shook his hand happily. "We can't thank you enough for what you've done for Lois...and for Clark." He shook their hands back firmly. "It was my pleasure. Should we go up to check on Lois' condition?" When they arrived in Lois' room, Clark was thrilled to see that she definitely looked better than even a half hour ago. Her color was returning, and Dr. Simons was pleased with the information on her charts and monitors. Dr. Simons announced that he was going to go to the doctor's lounge to get some sleep, and asked Dr. Peterson, who had been sleeping and was now showing up to relieve him, to wake him as soon as Lois was conscious. As Clark and his parents settled down in the chairs in Lois' room, Martha and Jonathan brought out a bag of bagels and fruit that they had picked up >from the grocery store on their way to the hospital. Clark enjoyed the next little while, sitting in Lois' room talking with his parents in such a relaxed fashion, knowing that Lois was out of danger and would soon be back to normal. As Clark laughed at something his father said, he suddenly noticed a slight movement out of the corner of his eye. He immediately glanced over at Lois, and his heart leapt when he saw her hand move slightly. In a flash Clark was at Lois' side. He took her hand and held it tightly, watching her face anxiously. A few moments later, her eyes opened slowly. She stared straight ahead for a moment, but then turned her head and looked at Clark. "Clark," she said, her voice little more than a whisper. She weakly squeezed his hand that was still tightly grasping hers. Clark couldn't stop the broad smile from lighting up his face. "Hi," he answered quietly. He lifted his free hand to gently stroke her cheek, his eyes not leaving hers for a second. "How are you feeling?" "I feel a little strange," she admitted softly. "Kind of light headed." Clark nodded. "You may feel that way for a little while. You needed a blood transfusion of sorts, and it's likely to make you feel a little out of it for a while." Martha and Jonathan appeared beside her, and Jonathan picked up her other hand and patted it gently. "You gave us all quite a scare," he told her. "For a while there, we didn't think you were going to make it." "What's wrong with me?" Clark squeezed her hand, and she turned to him. "Nothing anymore. You've been unconscious since yesterday," he explained. He looked up at his mom and dad, not quite sure how to explain everything that had happened in the last twenty four hours. Finally Clark said, "You had a form of blood poisoning that the doctors didn't know how to treat until this morning. They were finally able to develop a antidote to treat it. What happened is a little complicated to explain. But the important part is, you're going to be better, and that's all that matters. When you're feeling a little bit stronger, I'll explain it all to you." And he left it at that. ********** "Here he is," Clark exclaimed a short while later as he rolled their baby into the room. "Do you feel up to holding him?" he asked Lois. "I think so," Lois answered. "Just let me sit up a little bit." She pushed the button on her bed rail and waited as the mechanism raised the back of her bed so she was soon sitting up. Clark scooped the baby delicately out of the cart and carried him carefully over to Lois, putting the tiny infant into her arms. She smiled down at him as he wiggled until he found a comfortable position in the crook of her arm before snuggling back down and instantly falling back to sleep. "Man," Clark laughed. "He sure sleeps a lot. I somehow thought having a baby would be a bit more exciting than this." Lois scowled playfully at him. "Just because he's not flying around the room yet doesn't mean he's not exciting," she joked. "What did you expect him to do?" Clark shrugged. "I don't know. I've always looked forward to having kids because you could rough house with them and take them camping and fishing and stuff like that." Martha, who was leaning over Lois, ogling the baby, laughed. "Of course you'll be able to do all those things with him, Clark, but I think he's still a little young for that." "In the mean time," Jonathan interjected. "You'll just have to get used to changing diapers and waking up at 2 and 3 in the morning to take care of him." Just then the afternoon nurse came into the room and smiled at them all. "How's everybody enjoying that new little baby?" They all made some comments about how cute he was. Then the nurse directed her attention to Lois. "Lois, we need to get you up and walking around. We should've done this yesterday, so the sooner we get you up, the better." Lois nodded, then let Martha take the tiny infant from her. "We'll watch the baby for a while, Lois. You just do what they need you to do and everything will be fine. Besides, it'll give us a chance to hold our grandson." Clark and Lois laughed. The nurse lowered the bed rail so Lois could swing her feet over the edge and put them on the floor. Even that little bit of movement made her tired, however, and she had to sit there for a minute. Then the nurse helped her stand up slowly. "Oh, man, do I feel sore," Lois complained, putting her right hand across her stomach. "That's normal after giving birth," the nurse explained kindly. "But the more you get up and move around, the faster your soreness will go away. How does a walk down the hall and back sound?" "Long," Lois answered, only half joking. Everybody laughed. The nurse supported Lois carefully as they walked toward the door. Clark reached for Lois' robe that was draped over the back of a chair and helped Lois into it. As she tied the strap around her waist, she laughed. "I'd forgotten what it was like to have a waist." Clark and his parents laughed. As the nurse started guiding her toward the door again, Lois turned to Clark. "Are you coming, Clark?" "Do you want me to?" he asked. When Lois nodded, he looked at the nurse. "How about if I take Lois down the hall and back? Then you can do whatever else you need to do?" The nurse smiled kindly. "That would be fine. I'll be back at the nurse's station if you need anything." Then she walked out of the door. Lois took the arm that Clark offered her and started to walk out the door, turning back to Martha and Jonathan before leaving. "Are you sure you two just want to stay here?" Clark's parents nodded as they continued to talk to the baby in a funny, high voice. Martha laughed happily. "This little boy will just stay right here and keep us company, won't you?" she asked the baby in baby talk. Lois and Clark smiled at them. "Great. We'll see you in a few minutes," Clark said before closing the door behind them. Lois and Clark laughed together as they took the first couple of steps away >from the room. "They're sure enjoying being grandparents, aren't they?" Lois said. Clark shook his head as he smiled. "They're loving every minute of it." Lois and Clark began walking very slowly down the hall, and Clark kept checking on her protectively. "Are you doing okay? Am I going too fast for you?" Lois laughed. "A snail would be going too fast for me today." Clark laughed, too. "So what exactly happened to me?" Lois asked seriously. "You said I had a rare case of blood poisoning. How did I get it?" Clark raised his eyebrows as if to say, 'oh, great. Here we go', but he managed to keep his tone normal when he answered her. "It's such a long story, that I'd prefer to tell you about it when you're feeling stronger. I don't want you getting all worked up, and then setting yourself back in your recovery. Besides, can't you just accept that it's over now, and that you're getting better?" "Clark, I'm a reporter," Lois reminded him. "I never just *accept* things. That's what makes me a good one. I always need to know what's going on and why." "Well, just this one time, can't you leave it alone and just trust me? I promise I'll tell you all about it tomorrow or the next day when you're feeling stronger." "Okay. If that's what you think would be best." "I do." ********** After Clark left Lois that night to go back to his apartment with his parents to get some sleep, Lois started feeling a little lonely. She flipped restlessly through the channels on the television, but nothing that was on interested her. She longed for something to do. After another fifteen minutes of feeling bored to death, she decided to take a slow walk down the hall to the nursery to peek in on Brendan. Even though she had just fed him a half hour before, and the nurse had just barely taken him back to the nursery, Lois couldn't help but want to see him again. He was so beautiful and precious, and she still could hardly believe that he was really theirs. She swung her feet over the edge of the bed, please to discover that she wasn't nearly as sore as she had been earlier in the day. The nurse had been right. Getting up and moving around had helped to ease her soreness. She slipped on her robe and then walked very slowly down the hall. A couple of people eyed her openly as she walked down the hall using the rails along the wall for support. Lois thought they were a little obvious with their stares, and she felt self-conscious under their scrutiny. When she noticed that two people had stopped to stare openly at her, Lois gave them a indignant look. "What? Haven't you ever seen somebody who's just had a baby? Geez!" Then she shook her head in irritation and kept on walking. Finally she reached the nursery window and stared in, enjoying the quiet of the empty hall. She briefly wondered why a busy hospital such as this one was so deathly quiet, but then pushed the thought from her mind. She picked out Brendan immediately, and smiled when she saw that he was sleeping peacefully among several other babies were crying and carrying on. Just then Lois heard her name mentioned in whispering tones, and she turned her head to see two people, a lady and a man, pulling notepads out of the bags and looking at her eagerly. Confused, Lois watched as they came over to her eagerly. "You're Lois Lane, aren't you?" The guy asked excitedly. "I can't believe our luck! It was hard enough sneaking into this hospital with all the security downstairs, but to actually get to talk to you...that's even more than we had hoped for! Let me introduce ourselves. I'm Jon, and this is Melissa. We're reporters from the Metropolis Herald." Lois looked from one to the other in confusion. "Are you saying that you're trying to interview me? Why?" She laughed to herself, figuring that these two reporters were out looking for any story they could get. "So, what's your angle?" Lois teased. "Ooh...lady has a baby at the hospital? That'll really sell papers." The one named Melissa seemed a little confused, but she forged on and asked, "Could you tell us what it's like being married to a superhero?" The smile faded from Lois' face, and she felt her stomach knot up tightly. After a long paused, she said slowly, "I don't know what you're talking about." "You know," Jon prompted. "Being married to Superman. How does it feel?" Lois felt the color drain from her face, and she knew she had to get out of there. Fast. She had no idea if these two young reporters actually knew something about Clark's secret, or if they were just trying to bait her. Finally, she forced a small, tight-lipped smile and shook her head. "Look, I have no idea what you're talking about. I'm married to Clark Kent. You know...my journalist partner from the Daily Planet. I don't know how you've come up with this ridiculous idea that I'm married to Superman. I mean...Superman's probably off in Japan stopping some earthquake, for all I know." She forced a laugh, making it seem as though she thought they were ridiculously stupid. "Here, I'll give you a piece of advice. Reporting is based on facts. Facts. I suggest that you guys get your facts straight before you go making any ridiculous suggestions." And with that, Lois turned and walked away in as dignified a manner as possible. As soon as she turned the corner, Lois stopped walking and leaned up against the wall to compose herself. How in the world could they have found out about Clark's secret identity? She asked herself nervously. Maybe they really hadn't. Maybe it was all just some shot in the dark that the two of them had come up with. Lois took a couple of deep breaths to calm herself and looked around her. She was in a patient's lounge that had a couple of couches, an end table with several magazines and newspapers scattered about on it, and a candy machine over in the corner. She decided a rest on the couch sounded nice, so she pushed off from the wall and made her way to the couch. Once there, she lowered herself gingerly onto the cushions and glanced at the newspapers on the table in front of her. Just then one of the headlines caught her eye. She picked up the newspaper and saw immediately that it was that morning's edition of the Daily Planet. And on its front page was a huge, nearly full page picture of Superman. And inset on that picture was a picture of Clark. There was a huge, bold headline above the two pictures that read, "Superman comes out of the closet". Then below that, a smaller print read, "He's actually Clark Kent, this paper's own award-winning journalist!" Lois felt the room start to spin crazily and she was glad she was sitting down. Hastily, she grabbed the newspaper and devoured the words at lightening speed. She felt the blood drain from her face as she read, "Clark Kent decided to come out of the dark and tell the world that he is, indeed, Superman. His wife, Lois Lane, the other part of the Lane-Kent reporting team for the Planet, gave birth yesterday at their home, but was nearly overcome by a blood poisoning related illness that has left the hospital scrambling for a cure for her." The story went on to give the details as to how she had gotten the blood poisoning via Clark's alien DNA, and how he had realized that his only chance at saving her life was to tell everyone who he really was. Then the many doctors and specialists could work together to save her life. It talked about how they took samples of Clark's blood and mixed it with Lois' in a controlled environment, making a special antidote to purify her blood and make her well. Lois was shaking by the time she'd finished reading the article. How could he do this to me! Lois screamed silently. How could he possible make this kind of a decision without me, and then not even bother to tell me about it! Did he not think this would affect me? Or that I wouldn't find out? Lois stood up abruptly, ignoring her screaming muscles, and headed for the office down the hall where Dr. Simons had been a short time ago. Maybe he could answer a few questions for her. She reached the office, but when she stormed in, she discovered that Dr. Simons wasn't there. She continued down the hall, looking for him. She had almost reached her room when she saw Dr. Simons come out of an office down the hall. "Oh, Lois!" He called out kindly. "There you are. You must be feeling better if you're up and about. I was just coming by to check on you." Lois stormed up to him and flashed the newspaper in his face. "You knew all about this didn't you?" she yelled accusingly. "And no one even bothered to tell me?!" Dr. Simons took one look at the newspaper she was holding and knew that everything was about to turn ugly. He took Lois by her shoulders and forced her into her own room so that her yelling wouldn't be heard by the other sleeping patients. "Don't think you can just force me into this room and expect me to not get angry!" Lois yelled. "Because I'm definitely angry, and I have every right to be!" The doctor held a finger to his lips. "Lois, quiet down. It's after midnight, and there are patients sleeping in this wing." "I don't care if the president of the United States is down the hall sleeping!" she hollered at the top of her lungs. "How could you know about this and pretend like nothing had changed!" Lois continued on, ranting and raving like a lunatic. Dr. Simons began to feel that things were skyrocketing out of control. No amount of persuasion on his part would calm Lois, and he knew something needed to be done. A nurse stuck her head in. "What's going on?" Dr. Simons thought quickly. "Watch her a minute. Do not let her leave her room and disturb the other patients." He started to walk past the nurse, and as he did, he said quietly to her, "I'm going to go call Clark. Maybe he can come calm her down." He left the room, shutting the door behind him and hurrying to his office. There he picked up the phone and quickly dialed Clark's number. On the third ring, a very sleepy sounding Clark answered the phone. "Clark? This is Dr. Simons," Dr. Simons said hastily. Instantly, Clark seemed more awake and alert. "Dr. Simons, is everything okay? Is something wrong with Lois?" Dr. Simons rushed on. "Clark, Lois just found this morning's edition of the Daily Planet, and she's furious. She hollering and screaming, and she's bound to wake up the entire wing. None of us can calm her down, and we were hoping that you..." He was interrupted by Clark saying, "I'll be right down." And then the phone hung up. Dr. Simons breathed a sigh of relief. He hoped Clark would hurry. ********** Clark arrived at the hospital not two minutes later (obviously, he had thrown his clothes on and flown there). As soon as he stepped off the elevator, he could hear Lois yelling all the way down the hall. He hurried to her room and quickly went in. Dr. Simons was there, as were two nurses, all trying unsuccessfully to quiet her. "Lois, what's going on?" he asked loudly enough to get her attention. Lois turned when she heard his voice, and then went over to him, shoving the tightly clenched newspaper in front of his face. "What do you mean, 'What's going on?'" she hollered. "This... is going on!" "Okay, Lois, look," Clark began, trying to keep his voice calm and rational. "I know you're angry, and you have every right to be..." The doctor and nurses slipped quietly out of the room as he continued to talk to her. "But you don't have to yell and wake up everybody on this floor. Let's just sit down and talk about this." "I don't want to sit down!" she yelled at Clark. "And I'll yell if I want to!" She turned and stalked to the window, then turned and stalked back. "You made me look like an idiot!" Lois yelled, throwing the newspaper at him. "How could you possibly make a decision like this without talking to me, your wife, before acting on it!!" Lois was furious, and she could feel her face growing red with anger. "Lois, calm down," Clark pleaded. "You're getting yourself all worked up over nothing." "Over nothing?!!" Lois screamed at him, finally losing whatever self-control she had left. "You call this nothing?! I can't believe you! And I can't believe I actually stuck up for you when those two reporters corned me a while ago and asked me how it felt to be married to Superman! Do you realize that I almost had a heart attack right there on the very spot? I kept sputtering on about how I didn't know what they were talking about, and that I was married to Clark Kent and that they'd better check their facts before doing any reporting. Good grief, Clark! You made me look like a total and complete idiot!" "Lois, I wasn't trying to make you look like an idiot." "Well, you sure did a hell of a job!" Lois yelled loudly, her face turning redder by the minute. "Lois, just calm down," Clark said again, more urgently this time. "You're going to make yourself sick....." "Calm down?" Lois interrupted. "Calm down? You want me to calm down? Well, I don't want to calm down, Clark! I'm furious! How could you possibly do this to me?" "Lois, if you'd just let me explain..." Clark began desperately. But Lois was too angry to listen. "You know what, Clark? I don't care what you have to say right now! I am just too mad about this whole thing!" By now, tears were beginning to stream down her cheeks, and she wiped angrily at them. "I thought that you loved me, Clark," Lois told Clark. "I mean, really loved me." Clark looked at her in shock. "Of course I love you, Lois. I love you more than anything in this world. ...." "Oh, really?" Lois sputtered. "Well, you sure have a horrible way of showing it! You know what, Clark? I always thought that loving somebody meant that you didn't hurt them like this. But I guess I was wrong." Then she pushed past Clark and stormed out of the room. Lois noticed when she stepped out into the hallway that Dr. Simons was standing outside of her door, trying his best to pretend that he hadn't heard their fight. She made it a point to completely ignore him and stormed off down the hall. A second later, Clark came rushing out of the door, looking up and down the hall to see which way Lois had gone. He saw her a few doors away, and started to go after her, but Dr. Simons put a hand on his shoulder to stop him. "Best to let her be for now," he told Clark sympathetically. "She's understandably upset, and no doubt needs to blow off some steam." "I didn't mean for her to find out this way," Clark said, feeling very close to tears himself. "I was going to tell her as soon as I thought she was well enough to take the news...." he voice trailed off. Dr. Simons patted his shoulder. "Don't worry about it, Clark. She'll blow off some steam, and then she'll come to her senses. Then she'll be willing to listen to you tell her why you had to do it. Trust me on this one. My wife and I have been married for almost thirty years, and I've learned to just leave her alone when she gets like this. I promise it'll all blow over soon." Clark sighed heavily. "I sure hope so." ********** In the meantime, Lois stormed to the end of the hallway, then turned a corner and stopped to catch her breath. Even though the corridor had only been twenty yards long at most, she felt like she had just run six miles. Wearily, she leaned against the wall and slid slowly to the ground. Once sitting, she pulled her knees up to her chest and wrapped her arms around them. Then she buried her face in her knees and just cried. When there were finally no more tears left to cry, she felt completely worn out and exhausted. Even then, she continued to sit and just stare at the window across the hall, where she could see the sky outside starting to turn pink with the first signs of daylight. Then she heard a quiet voice call her name. "Lois." She turned her head slightly to see Clark standing a few feet away, his hands shoved deeply into the front pockets of his jeans. She also noticed that his eyes were red, and knew that he, too, had been crying. Lois wiped at her tear-streaked cheeks with the cuff of her long-sleeved robe and then looked back away from Clark, focusing on a dark spot on the tiled floor in front of her. "What?" she said irritably. "Can we talk?" Clark asked quietly. Lois just shrugged, acting as if she couldn't care less one way or another. Clark took her not dismissing him immediately to be a good sign and slid down the wall until he was sitting on the floor next to her. "Look, Lois. I'm sorry. I was planning to tell you everything, but it just didn't seem to be the time, with you sick and all. Not that I'm trying to make excuses for myself or anything. I understand why you're angry, and you have every right to be. But I was so close to losing you, and I couldn't bear the thought of that happening. So I did what I had to do to keep you alive." Lois continued to stare at the floor even after he had finished speaking. She wrapped her arms around her knees and rested her chin on them, not sure how to respond to Clark's explanation. When she continued to be silent, he put his left hand on her back and rubbed her back gently with his thumb. "Lois, can't we talk about this? It's killing me to know that I've hurt you this badly. I'll do anything I can to make things right." When Lois heard those words, she started to cry softly again. "Clark, I understand why you did what you did. I really do. It's just that I wish you had told me about it yourself, instead of letting me find out from some stupid newspaper. How do you think that makes me feel? To have my own husband keep something like this from me? It makes me feel like you don't even care about me...." She choked back a sob, and Clark put his arm around her shoulders, pulling her close. Then he wiped gently at the tears streaming down her cheek with his other hand. "Lois, you know that I love you. I love you more than anything in this world. I'm sorry for hurting you. You have no idea how sorry I am." He continued to hold her for several more minutes before she stopped crying. When she did, Clark handed her a tissue from his pocket and wiped at her tears. Finally she looked up into Clark's eyes. "So what do we do now that everyone knows you're Superman?" she asked. Clark sighed. "We'll just have to try to live our lives like we always have, I guess, and accept what comes." Lois was silent for a long moment as she thought about that. Then Clark bumped his shoulder softly against hers. "Come on, Lois. It won't be so bad. It may be a little rough at first, but we'll get through it. We've gotten through everything else. But we've gotten through everything else together," he emphasized. "And we'll need to get through this together." Lois looked up at him and smiled slightly for the first time since their fight had begun. She nodded. "Together." Then Lois scooted closer to him and allowed herself to be pulled into his arms as he hugged her tightly. They sat that way for several minutes before Clark kissed the top of her head and leaned back a little so that he could look down into her face. "What do you say we go back to your room so you can get some sleep? You look exhausted." "Okay." Clark stood up and then put his hands out to help her up. She took them, but grimaced in pain as she stood up. Sitting on the floor for so long had stiffened up her muscles, and she didn't think she was going to be able to walk all the way back to her room. As if reading her thoughts, Clark scooped her off of her feet started carrying her back to her room. She was about to protest, but decided she was too tired to do even that. So she rested her head on Clark's shoulder wearily and allowed him to carry her down the hall. They hadn't gone ten steps when Lois felt her eyelids weighing down heavily. She was pretty drowsy and nearly asleep by the time Clark opened her door and carried her into her room. Very carefully, he set her in her bed and reached for the covers to cover her up. The motion brought her part way out of her sleepy state. "Clark?" she whispered. He finished covering her up, then sat down on the bed beside her. "Yeah?" he answered softly. "I'm sorry I yelled at you before. I didn't mean any of the things that I said." Clark smiled. "I know you didn't. I've gotten pretty used to your ranting and raving. Your fiery temper is one of the things I love about you the most." Lois could only mumble a sleepy, incoherent response, and Clark took that as his cue to leave. But Lois tiredly held onto his shirtsleeve. "Clark, don't leave me," she said softly. "Lois, you need your sleep," Clark told her patiently. "Would you just stay with me for a while longer?" Clark smiled his soft Clark smile. "Sure. I'll be right here." The next morning when Lois woke up, the sun was streaming in through the window, casting bright lines of sunlight through the blinds and onto the ceiling. She sat up stiffly and glanced around, finding her room empty. She sat still for a moment and listened to her body and finally decided she was feeling pretty good. Dr. Simons came into her room a short while later, asking how she was feeling. After Lois got through apologizing profusely to him about her behavior the previous night, they talked in detail about what Clark had done for her and how serious her condition had been. Lois began to realize that she owed her life to Clark, and in turn had treated him horribly by accusing him of not caring about her. After Dr. Simons left nearly an hour later, Lois deciding that she needed to have a long talk with Clark when he arrived later that morning, and apologize profusely to him, too. Having made up her mind, she deciding that she felt well enough to get up and take a shower on her own. Very slowly and stiffly, she walked into the tiny bathroom and turned on the water to the tub. Fifteen minutes later, she came out of the bathroom feeling like a new person. Rummaging through her suitcase, she pulled out a large comfortable sweatshirt and a pair of gray sweats and slowly and carefully dressed herself. Then, tired from the task, she climbed into her bed and rested for a while as she channel surfed. When she tired of that, she decided to go down the hall to visit Brendan. She climbed out of bed again and walked slowly out into the hallway. There were a few more people there this time. There were quite a few visitors, and several nurses and doctors went in and out of rooms checking up on their patients. A few people that Lois didn't know smiled at her, and some even said, "Hi, Lois." To each of them, Lois smiled back politely and said a simple hello, even though she hadn't the slightest idea who they were. She guessed she'd just have to get used to being recognized. She'd always dreamed of being famous, but for her journalism success, not for being married to 'Superman'. She finally reached the nursery and searched for Brendan. One of the nurses saw her looking around and smiled at her, then pointed to a cart towards the back where Brendan was sleeping peacefully. She continued to stare at him for several more minutes, overwhelmed by the fact that he was actually hers... theirs. "He's just perfect, isn't he?" a familiar voice from behind her said. Startled, she turned quickly to see Clark standing behind her, smiling down at her. "Hi," she smiled up at him. He smiled gently back. Then from behind his back he pulled out a beautiful bouquet of wildflowers. "Oh, Clark, they're beautiful," Lois said softly. "You shouldn't have." "Of course I should. I was a real jerk yesterday, and I wanted to apologize. And just saying 'I'm sorry' didn't seem like quite enough." He gestured to the couch in the small lounge a short distance away. "Do you want to sit for a minute?" Lois nodded. Clark intertwined his fingers with hers and held her hand as they walked over and sat down on the couch. She was the first to speak. "Clark, I talked for a long time with Dr. Simons this morning. He stopped by to check on me and see how I was feeling. He told me about the Kryptonite and everything else that you went through for me." "He did?" Lois nodded. "He did." Lois looked down at the flowers in her lap, then when she looked back up, Clark could see that her eyes were brimming with tears. "I wanted to say thank you. I know how hard all this must have been, and I only wish you didn't have to go through all of it But I love you for it." "I love you, too," Clark said, lifting his hand to touch her cheek gently. "And if I had to do it all over again, I would in an instant." "Oh, Clark," Lois melted. She leaned over to Clark and pressed her lips to his in a passionate kiss that left her breathless. It made her feel light-headed and giddy all over, just as she had when they'd first kissed so long ago. When the kiss ended, they touched foreheads and looked into each others eyes, feeling hopelessly in love again. "Well, it seems as if the 'super couple' is 'super' again," a familiar voice interrupted them. They both looked up to see Dr. Simons standing over them, watching them with an amused expression on his face. They also noticed that they had attracted quite a crowd. Several nurses and a handful of bypassers had stopped to witness their passionate kiss. One person, probably a reporter from another local newspaper, was snapping a picture of them. "Hey, come on," Dr. Simons said, turning to the cameraman, ready to defend Lois and Clark's privacy. But Clark interrupted him. "No, it's okay Dr. Simons," Clark reassured him. "It won't bother me if he takes our picture. What do you think, Lois?" She shook her head, smiling at Clark's light-heartedness. "It doesn't bother me, either. If fact," she smiled slyly at Clark. "Why don't we really give him something to take a picture of?" Then, to Clark's delight and amusement, Lois wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him even more passionately than their first kiss. She heard their audience whoop and whistle at them, and she pulled away from Clark a few moments later, laughing happily along with Clark. It was in that instant that Lois and Clark both knew that everything was going to be okay. They still loved each other more passionately than anything else in the world, and they knew that love would get them through anything that the future would hold for them. Was watching Star Trek last night. It was one of my favorite eps, "A Piece of the Action". It was the one where Kirk has to find out what contaminated a planet's society and it turns out to have been a book about Chicago gangsters left by a previous starship 100 years before. When Kirk, Spock, and McCoy beam down, they notice that the populace are carrying weapons, mostly machine guns. McCoy has a line like "I've seen pictures of the old days. It's like coming home." to which Kirk replies "Home was never like this!" I could not help but think of Lois and H.G. Wells in alt-Metropolis in Tempus Anyone? The populace carry guns in an obvious way and alt-Clark is engaged to Lana Lang. There's no place like home! (Oops, sorry, wrong production) 2. My brother recently raised an interesting point about Clark. My brother thought that Clark has an inner clock, like Spock's, where he can tell how long has elapsed from any given point. Clark acts like this is the case in a S4 ep, can't recall which one (Shadow of a Doubt?), where he knows how many days, hours, minutes and seconds it's been since he and Lois have made love. Yet, in S1 and probably later, Clark does use an alarm clock to wake up and frequently destroys them by forgetting how much force to use to grab them and stop the alarm. As both these elements appealed to me enough to use in my stories, I was concerned over a possible contradiction. If he has an inner clock, why would he need an alarm clock? I thought I would ask the list because I might have to revise my fanfic and my nfic and the sequels...oh my:( Help? But Jack *did not* say, as you remarked in the context of Nigel, "CK=S or vague words to that effect." Therefore Nigel is not the only person who (if he did know) did not acknowledge his knowledge. Even in BatP, Jack was still very cagey: his request to Clark was whether Clark could ask Superman to bust him out of jail; not whether Clark (or 'you') could do so. When I go to sleep at night, if I tell myself to sleep for 8 hours and then tell myself what time it will be when that 8 hours is up, I always wake up at that time, give or take a few minutes. I have an alarm clock that is set for that time also. You see, waking up and getting up are two different things. If my alarm clock doesn't go off, I usually lay in my bed and stare at the ceiling for a few hours. I never had a problem waking up, the alarm clock simply helped me get up. Does that help? Just speaking from experience here. I also have an internal clock: 20 minutes for naps. In college when I had four hour breaks and three hour breaks, etc, I napped in the library a lot but I was NEVER late for class because my internal clock worked so well, adjusting up to 45 minutes, when the breaks were longer. I would otherwise never have made it thru my first year. I also wake up around the same time most days, but let the alarm remind me to get out of bed. If he hadn't thought that Clark was Superman, I think he would have been more upset each time Clark disappeared for long periods of time during crises, i.e. "Don't Tug on Superman's Cape," "Home is Where the Hurt Is" and when Clark has gone off to New Krypton. As Perry once said to Jimmy, he didn't get to be where he was because he "could yodel." ========================================================================= Date: Fri, 6 Nov 1998 07:02:03 +0000 Reply-To: wbarbara@execpc.com Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" Comments: Authenticated sender is From: Barbara Knutson Subject: Re: The People Who Knew Clark was Superman MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT On 6 Nov 98 at 1:20, Gary wrote: > >This isn't about either Jack, its about Perry. Maybe Perry was happy that Superman just saved them? When Lane Smith was doing his Q&A at the Metropolis Superman festival this June, I asked him about his take on Perry "knowing" - said that sometimes he gave just a *hint* that Perry had figured it out, but being the "newsman knows how to keep a secret", he wasn't ever gonna let on that he knew. There was just this look in his eyes.... Lane smiled and said "well.......", then smiled wider, and said "that's 'acting'........ And part of what I tried to give Perry." (or something like that; it's been 5 months, and I'm getting old and Alzheimers is setting in :}....) But the gist of it was that in his portrayal, the audience was supposed to get these little hints that Perry *might* know, but he loved L&C too much to say anything until they told him. Other's may disagree but I think a secret shared by too many people is not a secret at all. Clark's parents have to know and in the comics Lana Lang knows too (UGH!!!) and Lois knows (Wonderful - especially since she married him) but anyone else No!!! Having said that I have to admit I love Three capes to the Wind where Dr. Klein admits he knows. A wonderful piece of fan fiction in and of itself. I had to comment on the Internal Clock question. In Carolyn's post: >>I also wake up around the same time most days, but let the alarm remind me to get out of bed. It's just that Clark being able to say how long it had been since he and Lois had made love seemed like a really neat Kryptonian ability to have<< The reason Clark knew exactly how long it had been since they had made love is because it is a "male thing" LOL not just Kryptonian males. Men seem to keep track of this kind of thing. My husband always knows exactly how long it's been not down to the minutes and seconds though. Clark may have just guessed on the minutes and seconds just for emphasis in the dialog. Also, I just wanted to say keep up the writing everyone. I really enjoy reading your L&C fanfic. The jail idea sounds really good. Anyhow, that's my 2 cents worth. 'I don't think so' - which was entirely ambiguous, in that it could mean that he would not ask Superman; equally, it could mean that as Superman he had no intention of breaking Jack out of jail. In any case, there could have been a double bluff in operation here, in that while Clark may have suspected from Jack's comment at the end of Fly Hard that Jack knew, he had no intention of acknowledging the suspicion just in case Jack did not in fact know. As she pointed out, Lana Lang knows in the current version of the comics, and I can't figure out one good reason for her knowing. She loved Clark, but it was totally unrequited by him, and so her knowing long before Lois did, set up the same awkward situation that would have happened if Jack knew and the series continued with his character. I've never read the comics, I've never been interested in Superman except through LnC, until now, I'm trying to find some place in this dinky town I live in that sells the comics, but my search has been fruitless. I've never wanted everyone to know, then it wouldn't be a secret anymore, but I've always thought that maybe Perry should know at least, he loves LnC both like their his own kids, and I think he'd be like a proud Papa knowing that CK=S. The only part I regarded as a miracle was how fast they returned to normal. I have talked to several people over the years who finally told me they had been raped and all about it. One was in her 30's when she told me, it had happened when she was 12 and it badly affected the rest of her life. No one got the poor girl any kind of help. For the record most women who suffer rape need 5 years of healing in order to become full sexual participants in their marriages again. Instead, not knowing this, they give up and get divorced in 3. Getting professional help might have saved a lot of marriages and shortened that time. Another interesting item. When you get rape victims together, they will start talking. As you showed, there are different ways of rapinng someone. The victims are each convinced that the different methods used on other people are much worse than the one used on them. Rapist are on power trips to ruin other peoples lives. Why should they be unhappy by themselves? And all too often they do ruin lives and sometimes souls. That is why I believe in the death penalty, it is such a commonly repeated crime and death is the only sure way to stop it. Another matter is that people who have been under trmendous stress as in prisoner of war camps, held hostage, etc., quickly have their bodies stressed out. This results in a need for mega doese of B vitamins that will last for the rest of their lives (or as long as the study has gone on they have needed it for many years). B vitamins help the body cope with stress both before and after - long after. They assist the nerves. When you have lived with stress as I did and 10 years after the stress is gone, hear a man's voice hit the same notes that used to shake you up (when you were not ever the one treatened) and you feel trembly for the rest of the day, you understand the basics of stress. I still take megadoses of vitamins. I think that Clark and Lois will continue to have mild problems occassionally when they will have to be very patient with each other, but they will work it out ok. That type of event is not just cut off even after it comes out. It must come out as Lois knew in order for there to be healing - that part was really good. Too many people, especially boys and men try to hide it and pretend it didn't happen, so it just festers up. Please forgive my spelling and punctuation because I can't do either one when I write, but only when I proof and then I have to let it set a couple of hours first. Some people train themselves to be able to wake up at certain times. Some people wake up at the same time out of habit. I notice that most of these people unlike myself don't have insomnia. (Though I don't know if it was a book, magazine, or what). Anyways...the theory is that all humans are born with an internal clock, and if you don't know what time it is, just guess--supposedly you'll be within half an hour of the actual time. And then there are the people who have trained their internal clocks, to act like alarm clocks...interesting, though I haven't managed that trick :) I have tried guessing the time and it's surprising how often that 'half hour' thing is right. Anyways, I thought it was pretty cool :) dana ========================================================================= Date: Sat, 7 Nov 1998 09:17:17 -0500 Reply-To: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: Erin J Vance Subject: Re: [Fwd: [DeanCainFans] Vote for Dean!] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Type: text/plain; boundary="------------FAF3F1C72C03B1D2198657A2"; charset="iso-8859-1" Hi everyone.
