Sorry - been away for a few days... Peace, potato wedges are different yet again, and we do get those occasionally, in restaurants or sold as frozen food. Real chips: if you imagine taking a potato, peeling it, slicing it thickly, and cutting the slices into thick fingers, then deep-frying them until crispy on the outside and soft inside... *they* are chips! Curly fries - occasionally in restaurants and in frozen-food sections. Are waffle-cut fries potato waffles? If so, yes, similarly. Kathy - just seen your comment on my use of the word 'annoying' in relation to 'regular'. Please be assured that I would *never* want to offend you! What I meant (and obviously didn't make clear) is that the use of 'regular' to mean 'normal' *over here in Britain or Ireland*, where it does not mean the same thing, annoys me. Clearly its usage in the US, or by Americans in posts or fanfic, is normal for you (no pun intended!) and I wouldn't object to that... just to the McDonald's of this world refusing to adapt to different customs. Best wishes, Wendy (and if you think the chips sound good, try them in the North of England, with a serving of battered cod or haddock, wrapped in paper...) ---------------------- Wendy Richards w.m.richards@hrm.keele.ac.uk ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 29 Sep 1998 10:24:37 -0500 Reply-To: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: Kathy Brown Subject: TAN - Chips (was Re: editing & adverbs (TAN)) In-Reply-To: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" At 1:49 PM +0100 9/29/98, Wendy Richards wrote: >Real chips: if you imagine taking a potato, >peeling it, slicing it thickly, and cutting the slices into thick >fingers, then deep-frying them until crispy on the outside and soft >inside... *they* are chips! Ah, I get it ... the ones that are maybe 1 inch by 3 inches (/me does quick math ... 2.5 cm by 7.5 cm), then 1/2 inch (1 cm) thick ... we call those "steak fries" and they are often served in the restaurants here, too. I think "steak fries" might be the closest to the chips I've had in London. Actually, those McDonalds type fries aren't even the most common kind we have here. In fact, I'd venture to say that most people when making them in their homes do not make the little skinny ones. We have several brands of frozen fries that you heat in the oven -- most of those are thicker than the McD ones, maybe the size of 4-6 McD skinny fries together. >Kathy - just seen your comment on my use of the word 'annoying' in >relation to 'regular'. Well, I know this one is for fanfic, but which one is this >(what is it called?) and where is the other one? I am so confused. OK, two listservs for FoLCdom ... The *main* list is LOISCLA. That list has been around for several years. It started up, I believe, in late Season 1 (on ABC), so 93/94 sometime. It was quite small then, and you didn't even get mail every day. That main list grew to over 1500 people in Season 3 (Zoom might have a better memory on that than I do, as to the highest count we had), but is now holding fairly steady at about 550 people. The main list (LOISCLA) is for any discussion about the show (the episodes, questions, theories), the stars (what they are doing now, sightings), and sometimes even Superman in general (comparing comic storylines to L&C storylines, seeing Superman merchadise in stores). Fanfic is generally not discussed there, though people sometimes will advertise if they have a story up on a website, etc. S5 used to post our promos there as well as here, for example. This list, the fanfic list, or LOISCLA-GENERAL-L, is the secondary list created a little over a year ago (summer 1997). Farah originally started it because the main list was down for several weeks and we wanted to have a new place for discussion. When LOISCLA went back up finally, Farah decided that instead of trashing this listserv, she would convert it to a Fanfic Discussion list (an idea that many of us had been tossing around since Rhen stopped distributing fanfic via email a couple years ago). There are probably two to three times the number of posts on LOISCLA as there are on this fanfic list, though when we get going over here, we rival them. It is available in Digest form for those of you who would like to keep up on the discussion but want to manage your mail volume. To join the main LOISCLA discussion list, send an email to: LISTSERV@VM.EGE.EDU.TR with the message: SUBSCRIBE LOISCLA Your Name It's all automated so you won't have to wait to be approved, etc. Zoomway is the list mom. Hope that clears things up. When a listserv gets into subscriber numbers that high, then sighoffs are a revolving door I'd say the most steady 'high' number we had was around 800, but even at that, the list volume (number of daily posts) was very high and hard to keep up with. Even if only 10% of the subscribers post, it's a *lot* of posts. It's funny, I figured when the show was canceled, the list would plummet down to 100 or less as happens with many lists when a show leaves, but for some reason the show keeps some of us old- timers interested, and TNT seems to interest new-timers. This song is a great L&C song!! I've always been fond of "Sent From Up Above" by Mariah Carey, "#1 Crush" by Garbage, "I'm Still Remembering" by the Cranberries, "Souvenir" by Paul McCartney, "Feelin' Love" by Paula Cole (although that one's way more appropriate for nfic!!) and a lot of others that I can't quite remember right now. Actually, though, what I meant was songs that specifically fit "Disquiet Nights." This is not your average L&C story, and a lot of great L&C songs would not fit to it. The ones I chose, especially Paula Cole's, were probably some of the last songs you'd ever expect to be related to L&C. Those two ("Neitzsche's Eyes" and "Throwing Stones") were meant to be Lois and Lex's themes. I'm not going to post all the lyrics here, because that would be too much in one email. :) But you really have to finish the story before picking songs. Most love songs wouldn't really be appropriate. Well, they would, but they wouldn't fit a lot of the story. I guess what I'm really trying to do here is to make this fanfic very distinct. Almost any story can incorporate love songs. Here, I'm attempting to use some different songs. The song closest to the series' canon I have is probably Meredith Brooks' "What Would Happen?" (I've often set certain parts of "The Phoenix" to it in my head), the chorus of which goes like this: What would happen if we kissed? Would your tongue slip past my lips? Would you run away? Would you stay? Or would I melt into you? Mouth to mouth, lust to lust spontaneously combust? and the most Disquiet Nights-like verse is like this: Forbidden fruit ring on my finger You're such a moral, moral man would you throw it away, no question? Will I pretend I'm innocent? So you see, I'm not trying to compile a list of favorite Lois and Clark songs for my story, although that might be an interesting side project. Would anybody be interested if I decided to make a webpage with the favorite L&C songs on it? I've often wanted to do something like that. Wow, I like that idea. I really do. I think I'd like to do that. So, send me song ideas for my story, or song ideas for the page. If anyone else would be interested in co-creating the page, I'd be happy for help. I'd imagine it's a large job, if I wanted to put up all the lyrics, and I would have to juggle it with school and my part-time job. I'm sorry this was such a long post, but you know how it is once you get going!!
