I went to the welcome page, and read the general information about the communities, and I get the impression that people have to be invited one by one -- the number given in the invitation (C31865S7485) apparently can only be used once. Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" I'm half-listening to a CSpan broadcast of the "Creative Non-Fiction Writers Conference". They've listen to Barry Lopez and Joyce Carol Oates worry about things like computer manipulation of pictures creeping into photojournalism (the pictures in the editorial portion of National Geographic are probably true but those in the ads have been manipulated to make animals do things they don't do in places they don't exist), the way things work at newspapers (reporters confirming each other's reality and what gets reported as a result), the integrity of writers, and more. Senior people (reporters) don't want to know a reality (From a lower-ranking reporter) which disrupts their own reality. I wish I had gotten this from the beginning and were taping it or had a transcript. Anyhow, what does this have to do with Lois and Clark? It tells me new things about newspaper reporting, that's for sure :) Also, it occurs to me that there are FoLCs who would like to write stories for L&C but feel they can't write fiction. However, they might be able to write "creative nonfiction." How about writing some stories as they might appear in the Daily Planet (or even one of the rival newspapers)? Stories (in fanfic and in the series) often refer to L&C working on stories, rushing to meet deadline, proud of the headline--but we don't get to see the story itself. This is understandable as far as the show went, they had no time to flash the print on the screen. However, we have time in fanfic. A "creative fanfiction writer" might try to show us Lois's writing style compared to Clark's, compared to them both together... then Perry's final edit :) Debby Debby@swcp.com "research is very wonderful, it's like a vacation... surely one of the joys in life would be to be an investigative reporter" - Joyce Carol Oates (overheard just now, close to verbatim :) oh! Barry Lopez doesn't know how to type ;) He found out that by letting someone else type a manuscript, a whole step in the creative process had been left out for him, so he took it back... ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 14 Sep 1998 07:52:05 -0500 Reply-To: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: Jeff Brogden Subject: Story idea MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I have another mind-blowing story idea for someone how has more time than I. This one could be one of those really deep stories, with lots of moral dilema's and all. First, I read the following article: http://www.nando.net/newsroom/ntn/health/090698/healtht_12144.html Take a second to check it out. I'll wait... :-) So this gets me to thinking. Now that cloning of animals is technically feasible, and this guy is intent on cloning humans, the whole clone story lines take on a new light. Lex actually tried this, and failed. Someone(s) decides that Superman is too important of a natural resource to run the risk of loosing him. The difference is these people think they are doing this to help society. Maybe they try the old fashion approach first - mutual coupling. They screen a bunch of women to select the "best" specimens and then try to entice Supes into, er, propegating his species in a natural way. This will obviously fail, so they get desperate and try to figure out someway to get a cell sample from the Man-of-Steel. Maybe they heard of Supes fertility testing at Star Labs, and try to get him to come back for more. Maybe they try to use Kryptonite to weaken him enough to get a cell sample. Maybe they devise some other devious method of taking what they want. All they need is the nucleaus of one cell. Combine that with the donor egg and some electricity and *poof!* a super clone. Maybe they succeed in getting a cell, but the cloning process fails so they have to try again. And again. Those super cell nucleaus are tough! Of course, LnC will be wondering why women are throwing themselves at Supes more than usual. Why someone seems intent on harming Supes, but always stops just short of completing the job. There could be internal conflicts on how best to raise this super child. Or does it need raising at all? Is the clone going to come out grown-up (as Lex's did)? Current technology produces a baby, born normally. What if someone internal turned bad and offered to sell super- clones to the highest bidder? Some third-world country could get their hands on a super-clone, raise it with whatever belief system they wanted and have a nearly indestructible force on their hands. Our own government might want to produce a super soldier, super astronaught, super spy, super killer, etc... People could start competing to be the first successfull super-cloner. Let your imagination run wild. This whole cloning of humans is a bit scary in itself. The potential of super-clones opens it wide open. ================================================================= Jeff Brogden jwbrogden@bigfoot.com http://www.bigfoot.com/~jwbrogden/ ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 14 Sep 1998 18:31:24 EDT Reply-To: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: Lansbury 1 Subject: Writer's Showcase Comments: To: LOISCLA@VM.EGE.EDU.TR Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit Hello, I am happy to inform you there is a new featured Writer of the Week at the Lois and Clark: The New Adventure of Superman Writer's Showcase. [snip all the rest since I'm way too late to comment on Lone Rider and the soul mate stories haven't turned me on very much, sorry...] Anyhow, the comment hit home with me. Sometimes I'll disagree with an editor's note of something not reading right or making sense--hey, it makes sense to *me*... ;) I may also not agree with the suggested change to make it "read better." However, I always try to shove my pride out of the way and think: even if I disagree, even if it seems *perfect and wonderful* to me... this editor may well represent readers who will be confused. That whatever it was that was wrong (even if it wasn't) might well be written better, if not the way that was suggested, then a third way. While I write mostly for myself (not 100% for myself or I wouldn't feel so bad about taking so long to get the next installment out...), I also write for my readers and I have to take them into consideration. Subsequently, it's easier to make changes after a story has passed through the proof readers. :) Now, if I could just make my final stories typo free (I just found two in a paragraph in D16 upon checking for some obscure statement) Debby :) Debby@swcp.com working away at remembering how fun it can be to write :)
