What prompts a >fanfic writer to cover a certain story premise? And when they do, why a >certain direction, and not another? That's the part that fascinates me. Okay, I had some time today and decided to tackle this one, too, just for the fun of it. If you don't want the entire load dumped on you, stop here. Remember now, you were warned. Just recently, I read a quote from a very popular published romance author who said, when asked where her stories came from, that her very first book grew directly out of her love of history and being intrigued with the heavy equipment and weapons medieval knights worked with. She said she was reading about battle shields and how heavy they were and began imagining what kind of man would actually be able to handle them and right before her eyes a knight was born. The very first scene in her first published romance is two servants having to struggle to hand his shield and other weapons up to this enormous knight in full battle armour on a war horse. Until she actually tried to publish it, she didn't even know she'd written a romance. She'd simply written her knight's story. Several years ago, the idea of a full story coming from one image like that would've sounded so strange to me. Not now. In a way, that's how all the L&C stories I've tackled have started. LOIS' REVENGE grew out of seeing the picture of Superman that Lois kept around in season one and wondering what would happen if she ever did the unthinkable sacrilege of doodling on it. Gracious, now I can't remember, but was that picture on her desk at work or in her apartment? Of course, for the unthinkable to happen, I had to make her mad. Somehow, I just couldn't imagine Lois that mad without wanting to get some revenge for her trouble and I knew exactly what revenge she'd want. IF she was at all fair about it. Okay, so fairness had nothing to do with Clark's punishment. I was chatting on-line with a friend one day and we were wondering what rule said Lois had to fall for Superman instead of Clark. I think I casually quipped that for it to happen Lois would have to see Clark first. Then I began thinking about my own words because I knew they didn't make any sense. Which was my first mistake, because once I figured out what I meant - really see him, him as in the man, not either disguise -- IN THE BEGINNING resulted from not being able to get that little concept out of my head once it took root. What would happen if she saw him, no blinders, before he had a chance to become either one - hack from Smallville or alien - in her head and heart? That story almost wrote itself once I started putting it into words. It's the only one I've written so far where I truly had no idea where it was going or where I wanted it to go, but just went along for the ride. Then there's SANCTUARY and my current NEBS project. Yes, the original story was nfic, but discussing what motivated me to begin playing with the concept in the first place brings up something I've also wanted to comment on with regards to the nfic vs. regular fanfic discussion -- which is that sometimes the reasons a story is nfic has more to do with openly discussing issue than graphic physical descriptions. In fact, I honestly believe that a great deal of the demand for nfic concerning L&C from the writer's perspective comes from the fact that so many of the possibilities in their stories COULDN'T be covered in a family hour television series on a broadcast network and Not all these possibilities involve sex. [Oh, sure, a lot of them do, just go with me here . . . ] Believe me, I know I certainly didn't set out to write SANCTUARY as nfic simply because I don't write all that graphically to begin with. Nor do I want to. I did, however, want to deal with certain issues related to Clark's alienness and those placed some of the scenes and discussion well within the range of nfic. The result of this is that I found I couldn't simply edit out parts of the story to create a PG version for the regular list because there wouldn't be much story left. The overall premise is the same, but some touchy issues simply can't be dealt with. Once I realized that, I decided it would be more appropriate to tell more story all the way around, because there were lots of little things I had originally wanted to include in the first story and didn't. Then things really started snowballing . . . just ask my editors. But, enough, back to motivations. First, there isn't any one image that resulted in the original SANCTUARY premise. There are actually two and both are from the first season -- the globe glowing quietly alone in the child's treehouse labeled 'Fortress of Solitude' and Lex Luthor's hidden underground fortress he called an arc. Fascinating how similar those two completely unrelated images are when compared. Both are islands of seclusion and protection, yet total opposites of the other. Coming from Lex, the offer of 'sanctuary' was one of the most worrisome concepts imaginable but I couldn't get out of my head the eerie, um, premonition of Clark making a similar offer to Lois. There's just one main question to answer -- under what conditions could that possibly happen, past, present, or future? The possibilities are unlimited and yet strangely very limited, all depending on how one defines Superman. In exactly the same way, I know exactly where *I* want this story to go and yet have no idea where it will end up because the characters don't always cooperate and the series most certainly didn't either. Which is not always a bad thing. I may be the only person who likes the revelation on the show better than any of the ones done in fanfic<<<<<< I agree. I prefer reading stories written within the show's continuity and writing them within the show's continuity. Not that I always do There's also two types of continuity for me; 1) plot line and 2) character continuity. A lot of the vignette fanfic is of the second type. A writer wanting to test/explore the character dynamic. I think there's stories out there that rewrite the show's history because one function fanfic serves is wish-fulfillment. "I wish Lex hadn't..." "I wish that Clark had..." "I wish the show's direction went like..." and so on. I don't generally like doing a rewrite but rather find a reason/motive that can still work with established continuity. There's some great speculative story lines that are in the category of "what if this happened instead of this.." or "what if this first season thing happened third season" These stories nicely use the character continuity angle. The motive for writing some stories is to find the motive Why didn't Clark tell Lois the truth sooner? Why did Lois almost marry a man she didn't love? Why did Mayson hate Superman? This also brings up how fans see characters differently too. I disagree with another poster who felt Mayson didn't hate Superman. It seemed obvious to me that she did in the series, even Clark acknowledged that, "Mayon likes me..Clark, but she hates Superman, which is kind of confusing, because Lois loves Superman, but only likes Clark. Mayson likes Clark, but in a different way than Lois, but she hates Superman in a way that's different from anybody." If I were to put it milder than hate, I guess I'd say contempt I'm afraid if holding a suspect until the police arrive, or handing a suspect over to police is being a vigilante, then anyone who has made a citizen's arrest is a vigilante. Let's face it, that about sums up Superman's crimefighting style. One big problem with Mayson is that she was written so unevely in her few appearances. In Church of Metropolis she accused Superman of being a vigilante, but turned around in Top Copy and launched him after Diana Stride, and then did an about-face again in Lucky Leon saying she felt he was a criminal all along, and now he'd proved it. Make up your mind!! I think they had to blow her up to keep from finally finding some stability for her character >>For instance, Zoomway's "Counter Clark-Wise" (*my* first fanfic - lucky for me) is set in the first season's continuity, and doesn't require that you ignore anything else that happened then, or subsequently.<<<< That's true. If I'd written the story in 4th season, likely I'd have the married Clark's point of view, and likely it wouldn't be the Linear Men in the story I had to use them, because Counter Clark-Wise was written way before Tempus Fugitive and thus way before the introduction of Wells and Tempus. That's another thing too, some stories (a *lot*) were written before the show was over, and therefore might seem out of sync with the series' plot line simply because they were speculation stories way-back-when. Though if viewed today by people who have no idea how old the stories are, some might think they were rewrites, when of course they were not. >> In-between stories that expand on stuff that happened on-screen are a popular genre, but to me, the best ones don't introduce any events or knowledge that can't be tied into what happened in later episodes.<<< In-betweenies are fun to write ;) Though I agree that they should stay within the continuity of point A (where the episode cuts off and where the 'in- betweenie' begins) and point Z (where the in-betweenie ends, and the episode picks up again) That is, suppose you want to do an in-between scene from The Prankster. We know Lois falls asleep against Clark, and at some point he covers her with a blanket. Maybe an in-between scene could have Lois waking up and finding Clark's arm around her, maybe they talk, but it's very unlikely anything overtly romantic would happen, because it sure doesn't pick up that way in the next scene, though a lot of character 'thoughts' chould be flying fast and furious >>>>I really admire the writers who produce so many stories, and especially the ones who can think on their feet and write extemporaneously on-line. I experience brain freeze under those circumstances.;)<<<< That's probably another good thread < Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: Nancy Subject: Re: What Do We Do When We're Not in CyberSpace? Probably because I love fanfic, but for the life of me I can't seem to come up with ideas for story lines. At least by editing, I feel I am contributing. I've sat in on several of the round robin fanfic sessions and after awhile I just feel intimidated because they are so good and I can only think of one liners, at best. I get a kick out of watching the stock market and participating in an occassional buy or sell. I leave the Wall Street Journal mostly to my hubby who has become the real intellectual in this family as I happily sink into the gutter and splash around in cyberspace with my L&C pals. I have become the family computer expert, however, and I was one of the first 5 faculty members in our system to be on the internet and the only one on IRC. I've been able to help many colleagues get started, although I still have a great deal to learn myself. Over the years I've been into health foods and recently herbs. I bake my own bread and grow my own sprouts (when I have time which is scarce these days...the computer HAS taken over much of my leisure time. I don't even sleep that much anymore). So, I guess that's it or rather "me." Also, my husband's a bit of a tease about my L&C/online obsession - so only my online friends have read anything I've written. But apart from fanfic, which I usually printout and read at lunchtime at work, I enjoy murder mysteries ( like Sue Grafton), and sci-fi. I don't have a job where I get a paycheck but I do think what I do is important....for the time being I am a stay at home mom of a four year old son and a seven year old daughter..... In this age of the two income family I feel really blessed that I have the opportunity to stay at home for my kids. I am able to car pool to school and to the endless afterschool activities, I volunteer in their classrooms and of course I am in charge of most of what would be called the "domestic" duties. My husband works really long hours and travels a lot so it's much easier for me to do these tasks and that gives us more family time when he is home. I am a tradtional mom in a time when what was once considered "the norm" is not! I guess my favorite non-cyberspace passtimes would be reading L&C fanfic and working out, oh and I watch L&C on TNT! I spent four years running a home daycare, and it was the schoolage boys that got me hooked on L&C. They just loved Superman! Now, I am substitute teaching in a local school district until my Illinois teaching credentials can be converted to a California equivalent. I have plenty of time for reading fanfic when kids are working independantly, and my husband recently bought me a laptop word processor so I can take my writing along as well. As for what else I may do, I have a husband and two boys (aged 3 and 9), so my time is limited. I appear to have developed an addiction to IRC, but I accomplish this primarily when I *should* be sleeping, so as not to irritate my husband too much. L&C is my primary form of recreation, whether reading, watching, or writing. It has also offered me an opportunity to make some friends, while my current profession makes friendships really difficult (I'm never in one job long enough to meet people). It has been interesting seeing all the teachers that are L&C fans...I wonder if it is a trend, or if it's just that kids-at-heart tend to be teachers. This has been fun. I'm yet another of those Maths teachers (we add the 's' from our early school years ), working 3 days a week in a secondary school. I teach Years 9 and 10, although this year I have ventured into a year 11 Science class as well. I have three girls aged from 6 to 12 and am required to spend 18 hours a term helping at their school but I'm sure I probably do more like 40 hours!. I spend a lot of time playing taxi service running the girls to ballet and swimming and music and birthday parties and play a very ordinary game of beach volleyball for my own "relaxation". I seem to spend a lot of time online but during the *noisy* times in the US I'm either asleep or at work or cooking dinner, so that while I'm there I'm not very often *there*. I love collecting logs and reading them later and I've been known to add a line or two to fics and then disappear into the never never . I have a list of online "to do's" and as a world class procrastinator (hi John ), I should never promise anything.....I'm still working on two or three projects which I hope will see the light of day this side of ....Easter??. In my spare time I avoid housework and gardening and correcting .... All of us are watchers - of television, of time, of clocks, of traffic on the freeway - but few are observers. I'm really enjoying reading about what ppl on this list do when not on the net! Great thread. I thought I'd answer this, too. For the past six years, I've owned and managed a tennis specialty store...you know, tennis racquets, shoes, clothes, etc. And when I could,. I'd take time off to travel in-state and around the Intermountain states to play in tennis tournaments. Any other avid tennis fans out there on the list?? I also have three children (ages 5, 3, and a 3 month old) and I am currently working on getting a couple of YA books published. Gosh, with all I have to do lately, I'm shocked I have as much time as I do to spend in CyberSpace. I think I owe it all to one heckuva husband. (He pays me to say that about him ) >>And further, how does that affect our writing/reading habits?<< Well, the nice thing about being your own boss (I'm saying this in past tense because I just closed down my business in Dec. so that I could spend more time at home with my kids), was that no one could tell me what to do at work! So I brought tons of printed fanfic with me daily, and even used the computer at my shop to write fanfic, etc. whenever I could. Now that I'm home full-time, I write and read when kids are napping, or late at night when they're in bed. I'm sure you other busy moms out there do the same! :) Erin :) (aka ELK on IRC) erink@ida.net "The truth is, no one knows how long they've got. I guess I'll jump on the bandwagon too. I don't consider myself a Lurker- because I do speak out when I want to say a little something. Oh, well, here is what I do when not in CyberSpace. Let me add to the list of teachers. =) I am a 6th grade teacher in the Memphis City Schools System. I started my 20th year Jan. 6th. I am also the Technology Coordinator at the school. As soon as we get all of the classrooms wired, I'll come out of the classroom and into my own lab. It's really sad- because all I could think of was more time to check out the list and my e-mail. =) Anyway, I love to read the mail and I really love the fanfic. I'm not a writer myself but I really do enjoy the wonderful stories you all create. Keep up the Super work and I can continue to have something to look forward to after grading ALL of those papers. I have my MA in Elementary Reading. I've been teaching elementary school for 18 years. My current grade level is fourth. I enjoy working with kids. In education, I see the computer as a very important part of communication and research these days. Three years ago, my husband got a PC for our house to do work related stuff. We started AOL in the beginning when they were mailing out the introductory disks...and the rest is history. I haven't gotten involved with any other online group other than the L&C bunch. I enjoy this group's message boards, chats, and especially the fanfic. I just don't have the time to mess around on the internet any more than I do now. My husband thinks I spend too much time online as it is.......Oh well. Because of the positive experience I have had interacting with the L&C bunch and the potential of the internet, I applied for an educational grant and won 9 Pentium PCs for my classroom last year. It has been a thrill to see how well the students do with the PCs. Four students sit at a table with one computer. Each child has his/her turn on a computer for the day and does all of his/her work on the PC. They have mastered the "hunt and peck" keyboarding skill. I've got to figure out a better way to teach keyboarding! Now we are wired into the internet at school so we can do research projects, surf around the kid websites, and give presentations of what we've learned using Powerpoint. The major problem is that I am not a computer expert. I am learning just minutes before I teach the students. It makes life pretty hectic.....but, the rewards are worth the hassle. The majority of my home time is spent with my two young children, a menagerie of pets, playing on a USTA tennis team, and an occasional trip to the mountains to fish and ski. I love reading L&C fanfic. I am not a writer. I am so impressed by the caliber of writers we have posting online. Wow. Maybe one day I'll try my hand at writing. It would interesting since in the past several years I haven’t written anything longer than an example for the students' Young Authors Fair and a bunch of grant applications. Hummmm........ This is an interesting topic. Anne (ACdrift@aol.com)
