Oh, and I can't sympathize with this guy at all... I want on this show!!! Patricia :) ----------------------------------------------- The Times-Picayune, December 28, 1997 December 28, 1997 Sunday, THIRD SECTION: METRO; Pg. B1 LENGTH: 647 words HEADLINE: NEW ORLEANS MAN LANDS ROLE IN ANNE RICE TV PILOT; HE'S THE LOCATION MANAGER, TOO BYLINE: By LESLIE WILLIAMS Staff writer BODY: Elston J. Howard, a behind-the-scenes player in the New Orleans movie industry, and director Robert Lieberman were driving around the city a few months ago looking for interesting locations to film Anne Rice's "Rag and Bone" television pilot. Lieberman was grousing about his inability to find the right actor to play Keshawn, a public housing resident as comfortable among society's upper class as he is among his peers. As he spoke, Lieberman kept his eyes on the tall, dark and handsome Howard, the show's location manager. It was then that the 32-year-old Howard, who grew up in the Lower 9th Ward, was asked to do what many in the industry long for: act in a speaking role. Rather than jumping at the chance, Howard hedged a bit, keeping his duties in mind. "I told him I'd do it if it didn't interfere with my job as location manager," Howard said. He was reluctant, he said later, because he wanted to preserve a behind-the-scenes career that has advanced quietly over the past six years. Howard, in the end, joined the cast, taking a small but substantial role. One demanding scene called on him to make a passionate speech accusing the City Council and others of moving people from slum to slum. In another, he had to play dead - which isn't as easy as it sounds. "It was in the cemetery across from Commander's Palace. I'm in a body bag. It's November. It's about 30 degrees and I'm freezing and I'm trying to look dead, not to blink, while the rain is pouring down on me." Howard recalled. "Thank God, I didn't catch pneumonia." It was more unnerving than the only other time he's been on the big screen, a non-speaking role filmed in 1992 for Oliver Stone's "JFK" in which he played one of several assistant district attorneys. That role grew out of his job as a newly minted production assistant for the movie, which was shot locally. The Dillard University graduate continued to build his resume, working as a production assistant in "The Bodyguard," before moving on to become assistant location manager for "Hard Target," "The Pelican Brief," "Blue Chips," "Cobb," "Interview with the Vampire," and "Dead Man Walking." A self-imposed, almost-yearlong hiatus followed while Howard recovered from the murder of his father, James Howard Jr., who was gunned down in March 1993 in the Desire public housing complex when he spotted a car that had been stolen from a family member and tried to retrieve it. "In my business you have to be 100 percent focused, or you can't do it," Howard said. He later rose to the long-sought position of location manger when "The Big Easy," television series started filming in New Orleans. "Rag and Bone," a CBS pilot filmed here in October and November, does not have an air date, though Howard said work will resume on the show next month. The show stars Dean Cain, formerly the Man of Steel in "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman," as a priest-cum-police detective. In addition to finding the best spots to film, Howard's 16-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week job makes him the chief troubleshooter. He's in charge of getting streets closed and arranging for the use of apartments, homes and public buildings. He's the one who hires police for security. He's the guy who visits store owners to settle problems caused by filming. And he's the one who wades into governmental bureaucracy to get necessary permits. "It's a stressful job," said Howard, who gets beeped at least 30 times a day and almost always carries a cellular phone. It was Howard who arranged for some filming at the Iberville public housing complex, bringing $1,500 to the resident council and creating jobs for some residents as extras. Howard said he enjoyed the limelight in the "Rag and Bone" pilot, but prefers the other side of the camera. "I'd rather cut grass in the summertime than hear: "Standby . . . aannd . . . Action!" Just a few things: 1) No one is to send copies to others who are not on this list without the proper permission of the author(s), 2) Make sure you receive the author's permission before posting. 3) If #2 is totally impossible, *please* make sure you correctly identify the author's name in your post *and* make sure the author's email address is *NOT* on the post. (I would assume if you couldn't find them them address may bounce.) The reason I suggest this is there are some authors who do not want their works passed around or posted without their knowledge.
