Some of these elements were actually pretty good ideas, and when handled well make for a pretty entertaining story, but have become hackneyed from overuse by the unimaginative. Others came into being through the deliberate effort to avoid another clich=E9. Still other ideas were lame from day one, and should have been dismissed from the author's thinking. It should be noted that in some cases, the clich=E9 is excusable if it is supported by a well-reasoned means. F'rinstance, if an alien species is subjected to frequent and thorough racial purges, a large degree of racial homogeneity will not challenge the reader's credulity. The sophisticated reader (one who reads more than just SF) will note that these clich=E9s are not found solely in SF, but in other genres as= well. A conspiracy involving lots of people that remains secret for an= extended period of time 12. The author attempts to wittily euphemize the phrase go screw yourself by referring to it as "a physiologically impossible act" 13. The availability of firearms notwithstanding, swordfighting returns as a significant method of combat 14. The Big Surprise at the end of the tale: a. Barbaric society turns out to be post-apocalyptic Western= civilization b. Alien children, slaves, or pets revealed to actually be the parents, masters, or owners d. Head of Terran government revealed to be disguised Bad Guy or under direct control of Bad Guys e. Major figure in conflict turns out to have been another major figure in disguise f. Kindly Benevolent Aliens turn out to have Nefarious Ulterior Motives g. I just hate the thought that we've lost the show. Heavy sigh. OK, what more do you want us to do? Maybe you guys weren't on the list this spring during our full court press. If not, I'll remind you. The FoLCs: 1) Collected $3500 which, when matched by ABC money, bought a $7,000 Ad in USA Today. The was the **only** print ad advertising the move of the show to Saturday nights, which shows how badly ABC wanted the show off the air. 2) Spammed the offices of a) Jamie Tarses, President of ABC b) ABC Audience Relations c) Warner Brothers d) Disney with *thousands upon thousands* of letters, post cards, faxes and emails. The emails got so numerous that ABC ended up temporarily shutting down it's email box so we wouldn't spam it anymore. The faxes completely clogged up ABC's fax machines (which really pissed them off, but good or bad, they couldn't ignore us.) The letters to ABC started back when the show was first in danger, when we wrote to ABC *thanking* them for renewing the show for a 5th season (the point being, we have noticed that you renewed and will notice if you renig). The letters really started pouring into ABC's offices when we found out that ABC had been negotiating with WB all year to get out of the deal. Many FoLCs added letters to Disney, since it was widely believed that they were the ones who wanted to get rid of the show, so that they could put their own programming on ABC. On top of all of this, both a letter writing campaign and a postcard writing campaign was directed at Warner Brothers, urging them to "Hold ABC to the Deal". 3) Sent letters to the producers of the show, thanking them for the show and urging them to do whatever they could to prevent cancellation. (In response, the exec producers posted online that they were already on board, wanting renewel as much as we did.) 4) Started a letter writing campaign to the *sponsors* of L&C, urging them to pressure ABC to renew the show. 5) Got an interview on Access Hollywood about the campaign to save the show. The coordinator of the USA Ad campaign (Beth) was interviewed on Access Hollywood, a nationally sydicated television program. The coverage was by far the most positive press that L&C had received in some time. Access Hollywood then followed up on this piece with more stories about L&C over the next couple of weeks. This sort of exposure is difficult to quantify, but I think it's safe to say the FoLC were responsible for *tens of thousands of dollars* worth of advertising for L&C in the period right before cancellation. 6) Wrote letters to CBS, WB and TNT, begging them to pick up L&C's fifth season, like TNT did for B5. (To no avail, though TNT was sympathetic to our plight.) 7) Collected still more money to place a "thank you" ad in Variety, a Hollywood trade magazine, thanking Dean, Teri and the whole cast and crew of L&C for giving us 4 wonderful years of their time and talent. So, I'll ask again, what more could we have done? If you have better ideas, please share them. It won't help with L&C, but maybe it will help others save future shows that are important to them. Carole, the letter you received from ABC several months ago saying that L&C would be a mid-season replacement was written back when ABC didn't think they would be able to get out of the deal with WB for a fifth season. ABC was under contract to produce a fifth season of L&C. Many people thought that ABC, if they couldn't get out of the season all together, would try to bargin WB down to doing 12 of the 22 episodes (which would get WB up to the magic number of 100 eps, an important number in the syndication game) and stop there. If that had happened, it's possible L&C could have been a mid-season replacement. ABC also had some explaining to do when, while they were still under contract with WB to buy a full 22 ep fifth season, they didn't put L&C anywhere on their fall schedule (released in May). WB screamed; the FoLC screamed. ABC tried to calm us down, saying that L&C *might* be a mid-season replacement. That is probably where your letter came from. That was the party line at the time. But, at the same time ABC was writing you your letter, they were still working desperately to cancel the show all together. Ultimately, in a confusing game of backroom politics, negotiations and the almighty dollar, WB agreed to take a large amount of cash and a contract to air one of its new shows, in exchage for tearing up the L&C contract. The FoLCs at this point started writing letters to CBS (whose President said, when asked about the campaign, (paraphrasing) "Lois and Clark? We have our own failures; why would we want one of ABCs?"), WB and TNT (both, I believe, claimed they didn't have the money). Unfortunately, no one picked up the show, and the contract options expired on June 15, 1997. So, what now? If you did start another letter writing campaign, who would you write to? ABC/Disney *definitely* doesn't want the show, having worked overtime to kill it. The rest of the large and small networks have already passed, including WB and TNT, who each had a sizeable interest in the show going into a fifth season. Dean and Teri have moved on, and even declined to do some promotional pieces for TNT to help advertise the syndication of the show. On what do you base your theory that Dean (and/or Teri) would want to come back and do the show? Besides declining to do commercials for TNT, some unconfirmed reports say that TNT, immediately after cancellation, made an offer to Dean and Teri to do a 2 hour wrap up movie. But Dean and Teri said "thanks, but no thanks". Dean and Teri made it clear that they would finish out their contracts, doing a fifth year without complaint, if that was required of them. But neither of them has *ever* said they would fight for that fifth year, nor were there any reports of them going to ABC or WB demanding that their contracts be fulfilled. (And I, for one, hold no ill will towards Dean or Teri for this decision. As much as I wanted the show renewed, I sympathize greatly with their desire to have a life again.) The FoLC campaign to save L&C was well-organized, timely, aggressive, costly, time consuming, and emotionally draining. I have nothing but the utmost respect for the people who contributed in some way, whether by writing a letter, sending in a check for the ad, or contributing to the organization of the campaign. (And yes, there was a "committee" who coordinated much of the activities, including several members who somehow managed to put in an inordinate number of hours on the campaign in addition to their career and family obligations.) If anyone has suggestions on what else could have been done, please share. But I highly doubt you can convince me that we didn't do enough to save this show. All of the S5 episodes (9 so far) have been posted to this fanfic listserv, in addition to being available on our S5 website. The S5 eps so far are: 01 Back To The Future 02 Time After Time 03 Reconstruction 04 Faster Than A Speeding Bullet 05 In Vitro Veritas 06 From The Ashes 08 The Cat In The Hat Comes Back 09 Whisky Galore Maybe you read them or saved them to your hard drive, not realizing they were S5 fanfic? Not only has his website for FFFFS been pulled down, but I've been told his e-mail address is no longer active either. Before/after baby? Considering that Teri had the baby less than a month ago, and by C-section if you believe the news reports, it's safe to say that any commercials that are on TV now were filmed before she had the baby, most likely before she even got pregnant (didn't she film those Bally ads like two years ago?). Most doctors say that a woman is not supposed to do any heavy exercise for at least a few weeks, if not more, after she has a baby. I think I started taking short walks outside within a week, but I couldn't go back to aerobics classes, etc. until 4-6 weeks later. C-sections usually add at least 2 weeks to any guidelines - remember, you are recovering from major surgery! C-sections aren't like getting your tonsils out. Like I posted to LOISCLA, I saw one of these commercials the other day, and I would place them circa-2nd season, judging from Teri's hair--it was definitely pre-3rd season cut. So, yes, they were filmed quite some time before she even got pregnant ;) Sarah scmurra1@students.wisc.edu CatG on IRC ========================================================================= Date: Sun, 7 Dec 1997 14:47:36 -0500 Reply-To: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: Margaret Brignell Subject: Fanfic related question Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Hi:) I'm in the middle of writing a fanfic and need to know what Lana Lang did for a living. I've rewatched Tempus, Anyone? and she's at the Planet with what appears to be a file folder, but it's unclear if she's there only to see Clark, or if she actually works there. The copy of the script I have just has her coming out of the elevator (which differs from the aired version), there's no background information. So my question is: In the alt-world, did Lana Lang work at the Planet? or In the comics, what was Lana Lang's career option? I could make something up, I suppose, but I'd like my version to at least relate in some way to "reality";) Any help would be appreciated. I don't >recall much of her history, but I think she moved back to Smallville... She worked in a dress shop or something in Smallville, after the Manhunter this was [finally!] over. After Superman told her he was seeing Lois Lane romantically, she slapped him, and sold her house in Smallville. Then she followed Pete Ross to Washington DC. I seem to recall that Pete got her some kind of office job in DC. Then after she and Pete got engaged, she was kidnapped and used to blackmail him. Pete had to resign from the Senate, and the two of them moved back to Smallville. Pete is working in Smallville as a lawyer, but I don't think they've said what Lana is doing. They don't have any kids yet. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Genevieve (NightSky@erols.com) ; To find out anything you want to know about Superman (in comics, cartoons, television, or movies, from Bud Collyer to Dean Cain) -- check out THE SUPERMAN HOMEPAGE ========================================================================= Date: Sun, 7 Dec 1997 15:36:45 -0500 Reply-To: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" Sender: "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Fanfic" From: Michelle Glenn Subject: Re: What If I Said In-Reply-To: <01IQVE9XYLWI002DYP@DHVX20.CSUDH.EDU> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII What If I said that I loved you What would you say what would you feel what would we do Do we dare to cross that line between your heart and mine Oh, would i lose a friend or find a love that will never end What if i said No, it's not on hte soundtrack.
